I had a customer today who wanted to trade this car:

    Atlantic City NJ
    04 Cataract SRX V8 AWD
    Black/grey gut
    Nav/Panaramic sunroof
    3rd seat
Clean car, inside and out, could use a round of rubber
    heres the kicker 110,000 miles......

has the books, and all the keys; cover up the odometer, it looks like a 30k mile car.

Whats this thing worth???? :confuse:

Automatic? Stick shift? Flappy paddle gearbox, like the Formula 1 cars?

    55k miles a year??!
I have to know where this person drove this thing!
That's over 1K miles a week! 100 mile commute, I presume? Man, I would think if you drive that much, you'd first get something with better mileage, AND something a bit cheaper to buy.

    55k miles a year??!

Not impossible to do, my 04 (bought new 7/04) has 50k on it, I was driving close to 50k/year with just that car, plus managed to pile another 25k on my truck in one year.
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 33,699
yeah, but you don't live in the civilized world with the rest of us. ;)

This truck is in Jersey. Some of the worst traffic in the world. 100 miles here probably takes the same time to travel as 300 in AK. ;)

We're in South Jersey; traffic isn't as bad as up north. We really should seceed and form our own state ;) The truck is nice, but the miles kill it. What do you guys think its worth? I've spent the better part of my morning shopping this thing around. No one wants to touch it.

I had one driver who would put 72k/yr on his fleet car. I have one driver who is at 18k after three years. I replace the one car every 18 months, the other, every four years.
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 33,699
Well, I'd love to see what Terry says on this one .... total guess on my part? (mind you, i'm not even in the biz) $21k.

How do I come to that number? well, Edmunds says trade-in on a similar vehicle with proper mileage is a bit under $30k. I figure Edmunds is typically 10% over. So that brings us to $27k. On a vehicle like this, I think it should get hit for about $75 per 1k miles over the accepted amount(which would be 24k for a 2-year-old vehicle). 86K miles over = $6450 hit. SOOO... round about $20k-$21k. If its as nice as you say, i lean to my high number.

I just make this stuff up as I go along. ;)

On the other side of the coin ... how many folks would pay $24k retail for a 110k mile SUV?

    '11 GMC Sierra 1500; '98 Alfa 156 2.0TS; '08 Maser QP; '67 Coronet R/T; '13 Fiat 500c; '20 S90 T6; '22 MB Sprinter 2500 4x4 diesel; '97 Suzuki R Wagon; '96 Opel Astra; '11 Mini Cooper S

Ok.. this one's gonna be a bit harder than other cars to figure out trade-in value, being only 5000 limited edition... but i really need to get an idea of real value fast.

    Location: Hackensack, NJ
    Year/Make/Model: 2004 VW Golf R32
    Body Style: 2dr hatchback
    Engine: 3.2L VR6
    Driveline: AWD
    Mileage: 17000
    Color: black/black leather
Major Options: 18 in alloys, sun roof, etc
    Condition:
Few small scratches from normal driving and one small door ding(1/2 in big, will be fixed soon)

Tires - about 50% worn (summer and new snow tires)
    Brakes - great
    Maintenance - scheduled maintenance done
Other: no accidents. i'm the only driver and i never let anyone drive the car.

So.. how much would it go for? trade-in and private selling? being limited, KBB price is.. well didn't make sense to me but would be great to get near its price.

Isn't 2004 the first model year on the SRX? I think I'd pass and get a slightly older MDX with fewer miles. To compare within the GM family, you can buy a brand new Tahoe 4x4 (cloth seats and no sunroof, but still, 0 miles) for $30,000.

In general, company vehicles serve two purposes. Obviously, they represent transportation. However, for salesmen and executives, they also represent compensation. If you have a salesman that is producing 50-100% more than the standard, are you going to deny him a better vehicle to save a few dollars?

I have seen Taurus, Impalas, and Windstar/Astro/Ram caravans and the like with that kind of mileage. Oh, and a Park Avenue.

Trying to sneak in before the midnight nude macrame class...

actually talking numbers now on a new car, so Terry, can you update trade in (and retail road) on:

2005 Scion tC. Flint Mica (dark metallic gray), black guts.

5 speed (of course.) Only 11,000 miles, well maintained, no hits/runs/errors, other than a couple of minor scratches. Pretty much looks new.

    In NJ still.

So, what should I hold out for on this not so bad-boy?

2020 Acura RDX tech SH-AWD, 2023 Maverick hybrid Lariat luxury package.

If I can sneak in between knitting class and dog dancing lessons, I'd like to know if this old girl has any value left.

We are edging closer and closer to F-550 time. Opted not to replace the Titan (a. too much of a loss and b. I like my truck). So, that means we will have to upgrade the Dodge, she's starting to struggle a bit, no warranty and the repairs seem to be coming every week lately (the main reason hubby is starting to get nervous about his truck, otherwise he loves it).

    The Good: :D

1999 Ram 3500 4x4 dually, SLT Laramie, pwr windows/locks/mirrors, infinity gold am/fm/cass, red/grey, 42k miles, newish tires and brakes.

    The Bad: :surprise:

Regular cab, V10, nothing really major wrong except for the heater not putting out much heat lately.

    The UGLY:

Bad dent in the top of the tailgate, scratches and dings, shattered windshield, tweaked front bumper, taliban attack on the inside of the bed, but the Rhinoliner is intact.

I'm figuring if we can squeeze a dealer for $7k we will be doing pretty good. Ah the joys of having a business where you have to haul heavy stuff (just ask the Titan, it knows, lol).

BTW, here's the link to the latest picture of the old beast:

    Hi there...

Would appreciate your advice on my potential trade:

    Location: Philadelphia, PA
Year / Make / Model: 2001 GMC Yukon SLT
    Body: SUV
    Engine 5.3L
    Driveline: 4WD
    Mileage: 79800
Color: Pewter / Gray leather interior
Options: Loaded - Leather, 3rd row, sunroof, tow, OnStar premium rear audio, running boards, premium factory chrome wheels
Interior Condition: Non-smoking interior, good, couple of small stains on the floormats.
Exterior Condition: paint glossy, washed/waxed regularly. 2 small door "dings" on the passenger side (1/4 - 3/8"), 1 small ding in the rear chrome bumper (1/4"), No repaints, no collision damage, no insurance claims.
Tires 60%. Rear brakes just done 5000 miles ago. Did all maintenance myself, so I have some records, but I can't hand them a service history or anything.
Have title in-hand. Am looking at trading towards a Honda Pilot.

    Thanks for your help!

So I finally listed my 2000 Infiniti G20 via the usual avenues: online, newspaper, etc. I think that it needs new front brakes based on the sound. Should I go ahead and take it to a shop and get everything inspected and brakes replaced if needed? Or do I make the buyer do that and just adjust the price as necessary.

What I am afraid of is sinking any money into the car as it has a "handshaker" and having it not sell. Then I would have to take the dealer's trade-in of $5500. BTW I listed it for $8500.

But, if I don't replace the brakes, I don't know if a buyer will bite on the car if he/she thinks it has been neglected in any way.

I feel like I am in an automotive catch 22. Any advice?
  • corvettecorvette Member Posts: 11,194
If they're squealing, you need to have them replaced before selling it. $100/200 will insure there are no incorrect assumptions about the way you treated the car.
  • woodywwwoodyww Member Posts: 1,806
Definitely replace the pads before the rotors get ruined. And try to look at the brakes with the mechanic before the job & get a written, firm, estimate. I've had $600 brake jobs turn into $1000 brake jobs when I went to pick up the car.....pads should be inexpensive if that's all it is.

I want to trade in my car and buy a new 2005 or 2006 Honda Element EX, 4WD, either automatic or 5-speed at a competitive price (hopefully close to invoice).

    My car:

2003 Honda Element EX AWD Automatic transmission
    54,500 miles
    Silver with grey trim
    Good condition, no mechanical problems
Original tires, sunroof, keyless entry with remote ignition, aftermarket Kenwood stereo/CD/mp3 player.
Tires show typical wear for 54,500 miles
    Brakes good
Maintained well- oil changed every 3000 miles
    Single owner
No major damage (insurance paid for minor body work to rear when somebody rear-ended me at a toll booth; no mechanical damage done and body damage fixed.)

Please assess a fair trade-in for my car and a fair private-party sale price. Thank you.
  • jjtjjjtj Member Posts: 80
If you don't mind getting your hands dirty, replacing front pads and/or rotors is a very easy job. New pads & rotors will probably not cost more than $100. And I'll bet you could find step by step instructions on an Infiniti forum and the whole deal shouldn't take more than a couple of hours. Taking a Japanese car to have brakes done will result in a $300-$500 bill, in my experience.
  • selmselm Member Posts: 122
Actually, I would really like to learn how to do my own brakes, but I don't even own a single tool.

I'm interested in purchasing a 2004 Acura TSX and wondered what my 1991 Acura Legend was worth on a trade, or should I sell myself.

    Atlanta, Georgia
    1991 Acura Legend
    Sedan
    Automatic
    245,000 Miles
    Cloth interior - grey
    Exterior - grey (great condition)
    Alloy Wheels, Sunroof
New tires and brakes, non-smoker, oil changed every 3,000 miles, maintenance records available, 2nd owner, garage kept, no dents or dings, slight paint chip on drivers mirror.

Please assess a fair trade-in and private-party sales prices for my car.

    Thank you!

Oh wise one. Trade-in value? Probably send it down retail road. Value?

    Portland, Oregon
    2000 Subaru Outback limited wagon
    2.5 4cyl automatic
    AWD
    :( 128,000 big miles
    Color: Winestone (dark red)
Usual limited options: leather, sunroofs, cd player and subwoofer.
Good condition. One owner. Interior has some wear. A small tear in the rear seat and a few scratches on the inside (big dogs). Outside has the usual parking lot scratches/dings. Nothing major. New tires, brakes good, complete maintenance.
One minor accident. Rear ended and rear hatch and bumper cover replaced.

    Thanks.

It is a 15 year old car with 1/4 million miles on it, the general rule would be to not even try and trade it in, BUT. Yes it is an Acura, and most any dealer will likely take it to auction. There is a slim possibility if it looks near perfect and drives near perfect that the Acura dealer will want it as a show car. A show car to show how well a 15 year old Acura with 1/4 million miles still looks and runs. Even if they want it for that purpose, I am not sure they will give much for it, maybe $500-$1000.

Depending on your specific market, there is a cult following for that car and you might still be able to get an easy $2500 cash money for it. Super detail, maintenance records on the seat, ready to drive, big advertisement and an asking of $2900 with the car carefully placed where the tuners will see it.

It was about $150 for front pads on a 2002 Altima at the Nissan dealer here in Lexington. Flat rate for any Nissan except the new Maximas (don't remember the figure, but it was only a little more). Not bad for a dealer!

You suggested 14k and maaaybe 15 on an 04 Honda LX sedan trade(6k miles) for my 80yr old mother-in-law's car. When I asked you, I thought it was perfect. (Traded for an 06 Lexus ES.) Turned out she had run over a big rock (where the heck do you find, let alone run over a big rock when you put 3k miles a year on a car?) that dented the panel under the passenger side door. Not that noticable until I knew it (after which it looked to me like a cannonball had hit the car). Lexus first offered $13.5k and finally agreed to $14k. Decided to take the money and run. For the record she had kinda/sorta scratched a fair sized piece on the front bumper, and stained the carpet with a black coffee spill, lol.
Anyway, I knew where I needed to be if the LX was perfect ($15k) and thought $14k was a take-the-money-and-run offer. Bought the 06 ES330 ($35500) for $31400. Not bad I thought as we are 150 miles from the nearest Lexus dealer to cross shop. Grandma is delighted and I feel we made a decent trade. Thanks again.

...I know there's something wrong when an 80 year-old who drives 3k a year and has a nack for running over huge rocks trades a three year-old Accord for a $35k and I'm taking the bus to work :) . But I digress....

My first message got lost, so here is a repost:

I would appreciate a price for both trade-in (at a Subaru dealer, FWIW) and private party price.

    2004 Honda Accord EX V6
    non-navigation
    Black exterior/tan leather
    Options are:
17-inch wheels from 6-speed coupe (stock are 16s)
    tint
    rear lip spoiler
    almost new tires
    Miles: 21k
    Location: Houston

Car is in very good condition with the exception of a mark on the rear bumper where my bike tire rubbed against it (I have a hitch-mounted bike Thule rack). Car is always garage kept.

    Thanks, Chris

My apologies if the subject of CarFax inaccuracies has been discussed ad nauseam, but my mom is looking for a new (used) car, so she decided to buy a CarFax unlimited package (or whatever). Just for kicks, she ran her current cars. This one is especially funny, or disturbing, depending on your perspective (mom's comments in *'s):

The story of this 1988 MERCEDES-BENZ 300E (WDBEA30D0JA763119) according to our interpretation of the information reported to CARFAX:
This sedan has had 1 owner in Missouri. The first title for this sedan was reported to CARFAX by a Missouri DMV in 1988. *Hey, what happened to me?*
It has had no minor or moderate accidents reported to CARFAX. *I guess $8500 in cow damage doesn't count.*
It has had no DMV-reported total loss events, like a major accident, fire or flood.
It has not been reported by a DMV as having an Exceeds Mechanical Limits or Not Actual Mileage title. *Are you kidding me?*
It has a consistent mileage history with no indication of an odometer rollback. The last odometer reading, reported on 12/17/1991, was 19,589 miles. *ROFLMBO*
It was not reported by a DMV as a Manufacturer Buyback or LEMON.
It has no recalls that still require repair.
Go to the Detailed Vehicle History for the complete history and a glossary of terms.

This car has had TWO owners (the original and my mom), strike one.
The car was registered in Missouri until mom moved to Indiana (IN 1995!!), strike two.
Stepdad and said car had a major run-in with a cow, to the tune of $8500 at least five years ago, IIRC. Strike three (I'll give a little leway on that one).
Last, it has an odometer that has been broken for about five years but showing slightly over 300k (car has more like 400-450k).

What good is CarFax if it's totally inaccurate?

It is a car that will retail around $4,900. Trade side should be in and around the $2,500-$3,000 mark depending on whether the dealer plans on wholesale auction or is willing to take a chance on selling it on the lot.
  • dkuhajdadkuhajda Member Posts: 487
It is a Kia, forget about excellent condition. Try average condition or below average as most dealers won't want it used on the lot.

Yikes .......! .. no breeze ..?? ... with it being "Fall" you can probably move it - if it was July or August in NJ you could be suckin' the exhaust pipe for the next 3 months ..

Well .... it's a base, it's a 2dr, no breeze, handshaker, it's green, at least we have baby miles -- aaahh, what can I say ...?

I think your right on the $$ as far as the trade is concerned .. depending on the dealer you might find the mid/high $4's and the guy 5 blocks away might drop the low low low low $5's in it - maybe .... only because of the season would I try *asking* $7,900 and see what kind of response I would get and grab $6,5/$7,5 ... no calls at $7,900 and I would drop it to $7,495 .. down south, I would have to pay someone to take if off my hands for $5,900 ..l.o.l... the only thing that saves this caboose is the looooooooooow miles ..

    ===============================

Well, I put the ad in the paper last Tuesday to start to run on Thursday at $7900. In between on Wednesday, somebody starts an ad for an identical Accent with 9000 miles for $6900.

Still, I got a call or two a day. First guy hung right up on me when he heard no air. Next two were actually sort of polite even when hearing about the 5 speed and no air, saying they were shopping for a car for their kids. Somewhere in between was the lady asking if I was negotiable, and would I take "four tousandt" . Then over the weekend got a call from an older man that wanted to see it right away. Met him and his wife 15 minutes later, both liked it, agreed it was basicaly a new car, and did the deal for $6750. I would have liked to have gotten a few hundred more, but I have enough landscaping in my yard, and didn't really want a green Hyundai topiary at the side of my driveway. So 4 days in paper for $50, a replacement wheelcover and bottle of touch-up paint for a couple of paint chips for another $50, a good detail done by yours truly, and off it goes to a new home. Mother says she is pleased with the price, though knowing her I'm sure she won't be in a few months.

Thx Terry, and here's proof that with some minor effort, you can get all the money pretty quick retailing yourself.

In the land of golf ..... we have an 04 Cheby S-10 4x4 crew cab (LS I would presume) .. the miles are tall - tall - tall, the color is good, we have a little 4x4 action, it's the auto thing and we have few baby meteorite hits probably from the back country roads ..... if the rubber is deep and the stoppers are better, the service is complete, the interior doesn't have all those "Bojangles" bags stuck under the seats, no click click in the 4x4 and it drives, feels and looks like 15k .... then trade side, in and around the mid/tall $12's, might maybe get reeeeal lucky and see the low low low low low low $13's with the proper alignment of Venus and Mars ..... if it needs stuff, start deducting.

    Don't forget the update ................. ;)

    3.8L V6 FWD
    Mileage: 104k
    Color: Green/Charcoal interior
Options: Power drivers seat, p/w, p/l, not much else
    Condition:
    - Bought the car in Texas three years ago with only 40k miles on it. No rust anywhere
    - All fluids maintained per manuf. maintenance schedule
    - Tires at 50%
    - In the last few months: New shocks, new intake plenum, new engine computer, alignment, rad flush.
    - Has cracked windshield, I have not fixed it because it's on the passenger side only
    - Paint in good condition, very few door dings/scratches, definitely above average for a 1995.
    - Interior is also nice, no french fries, sucker sticks, or bubble gum

I'm thinking asking $3k and cut her loose at $2,5. Is this a fair asking price or should I aim higher/lower?

    Thanks!

..... Here's the deal ...... if ya got a deal going on, then repost .... if it can wait, then I'm going to try to "back track" the rest --IF-- my elbow doesn't give out from hitting 10,000 "great golf shots" last weak week ......

    Terry.

PS: Who's the one that recommended Tobacco Rd..?

Best analogy I heard all week -- ""Tobacco Rd is like Pinehurst #2 on Steroids"" ....l.o.l.... and it's true.! .. :P

    The story of this 1988 MERCEDES-BENZ 300E

Well, maybe you can give CarFax a break on getting info on an 18 year-old car. I don't think CarFax really hit their stride until the mid 90's, so getting older data would be problematic. For something after '96 or so, they're probably much more accurate.

Sorry, got a potential deal going for a Pruis for Jan delivery and need to know whether I should sell the Accord myself or just trade.

I would appreciate a price for both trade-in and private party price.

    2004 Honda Accord EX V6
    non-navigation
    Black exterior/tan leather
    Options are:
17-inch wheels from 6-speed coupe (stock are 16s)
    tint
    rear lip spoiler
    almost new tires
    Miles: 21k
    Location: Houston

Car is in very good condition with the exception of a mark on the rear bumper where my bike tire rubbed against it (I have a hitch-mounted bike Thule rack). Car is always garage kept.

    Thanks, Chris

The car is certified to 100k or 2008. I have tried to sell outright prior to my new MINI Cooper arriving, but have had no luck. Car is located in Atlanta.
