Without giving it any thought, I just kinda assumed everybody in the country has one within a 30 minute drive. We have a Carmax here in Birmingham as well as a competitor called Driver's Way that is basically a Carmax clone.

nearest one to Phila. is by baltimore, so a good 2 hour drive. Carsense seems to do th esame thing, but I don't think they have the rep for paying over book for a nice unit, but they are only 50 miles from me.

About to offer the following car as a trade for a new Honda Pilot EX AWD:

    2000 ML320
    Silver, one-owner, no accidents
    Avg. miles (79k)
Sunroof, heated seats, CD changer, but no leather or nav
Good to excellent, cosmetically and mechanically

The car looks and drives nice and has good Michelin tires, although they may note that the brake pads are getting marginal.

The book trade values are between $12K and $14.5K.

My plan is to press for a "around invoice" deal on the Pilot (which seems to be the market right now) and take $12K for the Benz, to pay around $16K difference cash. Feasible?

Why do these only show up when the snow's flying and I'm happy to have my garage back???

    2004 Ford Taurus SE Duratec
Off-lease fleet car with, ahem, 101,000 miles

Usual equipment plus some sort of trip computer.
No runs no hits no errors, driver seat is a little worn.
Birthday of 9/03, and been run hard ever since.
From the shape of the cyl head I'd say regular oil changes, but not exactly at 3k intervals... a little honey-colored but no "floaters".

    Alloys with decent tires.
    CD changer.

Runs like a champ, no noises, smells somewhat like air freshener but at least a non-smoker's car.

Here's the problem, the price is $5,500 take-it-or-leave it on account of the seller is a friend and just bought it at auction locally for a little under that. That's one heck of a deal, but I don't need the darned thing for the next 4 months...

    I don't even know what I'm asking....???

A young lady at work is looking for wheels and knows nothing, so I picked up this at a tame lot for her to check out:

    '02 Civic LX auto, black
    87k miles
Usual LX stuff, no ABS or side air bags.

Engine looks meticulously maintained, tranny could use a flush&fill.
Runs good, tires are HORRIBLE and make all kinds of noises.

Never hit, no repaints that I can tell, certainly no frame work.
    Aftermarket CD stereo.

    Clean, non-smoker car.
Price is $8,200 and is not really negotiable.

I'm thinking for a Civic, that's pretty good.
I'm also thinking she should buy a new Corolla...

Hi, I am in the process of trying to buy a 1999 lexus es300 with 94,500 miles, and the guy was asking 10,900. I got him down to 9,000. All the car needs is new tires, and a timing belt/water pump change. I figure 500 for tires and 400 for timing belt. Should I take the car at this price/ is this a good price?

    Thanks, any help appreciated.

In the land of the Redskins .....

We have a 00 Nissan Frontier 4x4 King cab V6 XE with 53k ... the miles are low, the color is good, it's a big cab V6 4x4, we got the bedliner, topper cap, tunes, new round things and you say the service is right .....

Well ---- everything was going your way until that darn handshaker thing popped up ... the miles are low and it's an Ecab 4x4 V6 .. so if it looks and drives like a 04, and the topper doesn't look like Willy Wonka installed it and you haven't bounced it off the local K-Mart and the bedliner doesn't look like a dangerous waste management center ..... then trade side, in and around the low/mid $8's, might "maybe" see a dealer wander towards the $9,0 figure if it's really a nice one and it needs -0- ..... if it needs stuff, start deducting ...

Down Retail Rd .? .. super detail, superb Ad, all the history dangling from the mirror and: $11,495 *asking* and $10,5/$10,9 should get a new owner ... these are kinda loved like the Tacoma's and Tundra's, you just need a little patience cuz' of that darn meat clever .. so don't get greedy .. if ya do, you'll be seeing that dude when the Easter Bunny comes hopping by ...

Don't forget to let me know what happens ....

    Sorry:

Lexus es300 with 94,500 miles needs timing belt change and new tires (I figure 500 for water pump and belt, 500 for tires), so about 1,000 i will have to put in car

Has all options (i.e. sunroof, 6 disc c.d. changer, leather, gold exterior, beige interior)
Exterior is in very good condition (no scratches, a rubber weatherstripping piece is a little worn),

interior is in very good condition- leather seats low worn, no evidence of sun damage.

The guy was asking 10,900, but I got him down to 9,000

Oil changed every 3-5k, but not synthetic (at least the guy was honest)

    60k service performed

In Pittsburgh. I am looking to buy a used 2003 or 2004 4runner. Basically I am looking to buy a v6 4wd SR5 with the basic options and in average condition. What should I be paying at a dealer for one of these with average miles? Also, what are average miles and how much does a v8 add to the value? Should I even be buying a used one or should I buy a new one?

Thanks in advance for your help.

    .... In ol' Virginny .......

    Good description - tanks

We got a 00 ZX2 with 47k ..... the miles are loooow, we got the auto thing, the color is a maybe, we have the power pack, some wheels, service is ok and the rubber and stoppers are asleep at the wheel ..... if the air still blows cold, then trade side, in and round the mid/tall $2's, might "maybe" see a dealer stagger towards the low low low low low low $3's cuz' of the low miles .....

Me personally..? .. I would run this little dude down Retail Rd .. I would get with the bad boys of detail, maybe drop some Sears rubber all the way around it, do a small service and have all the history and service records Duct taped to your forehead and: $5,900 *asking* and kick it loose at the first $5,0/$5,5 .... lots of nice folks lookin' for a nice little driver for the winter ....

"luck" and let me know what happens .....

In the land of the Giants ...... we have an 04 MB E320 4-matic wagon, miles are short, the color is good, we have a few little baby kisses here and there, we got the slider, cold package and some tunes ........ IF ~ we don't have any repaints, no Soccer Mom interior, no curb burners and no 27 Wendy's bags stuck under the seats .... then trade side, in and around the mid/tall $38ish figure, might maybe "could" see the low low low low low low (did someone say low?) low low low $39ish figure ...... Am I missing something.? .. $38 seems to be a little light for a low miler 4-matic E320 wagon, especially this time of the year ....

    Hi, Terry.

I'm hoping you can put a trade-in value on my rig:
In Southern NJ (near Philly), 2001 RAV4 AWD w/Quick-order pkg (ac, sound, pw/d/l, no sunroof, no alloys), auto trans, white, 67,000 miles, maybe 5k miles left on the rubber, vgc (only blemish is one hard-to-see door ding on passenger side).

We bought the CPO '04 X3 for $29595+TTL, which I thought was an outstanding deal. Thanks again for your help!
Now, just for fun, care to guess how much we got from selling our 1997 528iA to a private party? Here are the gory details:
    Louisville, KY
    1997 BMW 528i(build date 6/96)
    4dr
    2.8 six cylinder
    RWD/automatic
    129,600 miles
    Aspen Silver/Black leather
Premium Package, Heated seats/steering wheel, DSP Sound System, six disc CD Changer, four steel wheels with BMW OEM wheel covers for mounting winter tires
Exterior has a couple of door dings, valve cover gasket seeping slightly-otherwise perfect running gear, complete service history, interior very clean.
Car has four accidents reported on Carmax, all due to the car being rear ended by imbeciles while our car was stopped in traffic. All but one only required a new bumper cover, the big one required a new trunk lid, exhaust, and some massaging of the rear quarters(>$9K when all was said and done)
So, what do you think it went for?

I sure hope so; although every accident was due to almost terminal stupidity. A brief summary:

1.Stopped in traffic, guy behind me lets his foot slip off clutch. Bang! Bumper cover gouged and cracked. Perp wants me to take it to his uncle's garage to have the cover "buffed out". I laugh. Bumper cover replaced.
2.Uninsured moron is driving his live-in girlfriend's uninsured Sunbird. Moron throws cigarette butt out window. Butt flies back into car. Moron begins search for butt, neglecting to notice 5er stopped at traffic light. BIG BANG! Moron offers to pay $100/month restitution if I don't file criminal charges for driving uninsured. More laughter. 5er can be driven away. Pontiac sits by road for ten days before it is towed off by police. Total damage over $9K-all but $500 paid by MY insurance
3.Soccer mom arguing with her kid rams her new Accord into a Celica stopped behind my wife who is-you guessed it-stopped at a light. Airbags deploy in both Accord and Celica(no injuries). 528i is driven away. Another bumper cover.
4.528i is-all together now-STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT. A guy adjusting the radio in his Tundra rams the car which is third in line behind my wife, causing a chain reaction. Multiple airbag deployments, only minor injuries. The 5er is-once again-the only car that can be driven away.

My wife isn't normally superstitious, but she swears that she will NEVER own another silver car. :surprise:

    $8500?

Close, but a bit low. It also turned out that the car had one last bit of Bad Karma to bestow:
The day before I sold it the LR window regulator died. I KNOW we haven't used that window for at least six months. Luckily, I was able to pull the door panel and get the window to remain in the "up" position. And, since the buyer uses the same BMW indie shop as I do, I simply set it up so that the shop will do the repair and bill me for the fix(@$350) :(

    Hi Terry
I have been a long-time lurker on the Edmunds forums and have always enjoyed your colorful and informative trade-in advice.

Please fill me in on your best trade/retail price I could probably get on the following:

    Johnstown, PA
    2003 Chevy Malibu LS 4-door
    3.1 V6 FWD automatic
    30,300 miles
    Redfire Metallic/Tan Leather
    Alloy Wheels/spoiler/moonroof/CD+Cassette stereo/pwr seat/keyless entry/gold emblems & grill trim
    Interior is flawless-no leather cracks/rips, rugs/mats clean, non-smoker.
Exterior has some very small stone chips on outside mirrors, front bumper and front edge of hood. You can't see them from more than 3 ft. About 1 year ago, the driver's front door was sideswiped in a parking lot. The outer door skin was replaced, all repair and paint work done at the dealership. You can't tell the difference. Two approx. 2" hairline scratches in passenger side door, can be airbrushed out according to body shop. One 1 1/2" square paint scuff on corner of rear bumper that was touched up professionally. The texture is not perfectly smooth, but the color matches and you can't tell from more than 3 ft.
Brand new all season tires less than two months old.
Brake pads replaced at last servicing.
All scheduled maintenance done at dealer/oil changed every 3k.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Sounds like you are getting a good deal on the car. I used Edmunds website to configure the car. I used my own zip code. Prices vary slightly from region to region. If you really like the car go ahead and buy it. Lexuses are nice car and should last pretty much forever with proper maintenance. Good luck.

    Hello,

I am trying to determine a fair price for my 1998 Audi A6 Quattro (sedan) with 107,000 miles. The car is fully loaded (leather seats, power seats/windows, Bose sound system, etc.) and in good condition (clean title). What is the fair trade-in value for it?

    Many thanks,

Witold, it works best if you follow the format just above where you type your message.... you will surely be missed if you don't have all the pertinent information... just thought you should know.

Your location, the color, tire condition, nicks, ever been in a wreck?..... all of these things are important for Terry to give an accurate evaluation. Just read the last 20 posts and you will see how it's done. :D

I appreciate any information that you can give regarding reasonable expectations for trade value for the following car:
    2005 Mercedes SL 55 AMG
Located in the Baltimore Washington area
    2Door
    V8 turbocharged
    RWD
    14,500 miles
    silver w/ gray interior
options: tire pressure monitor, ventilated seats, keyless ignitiom, navigation, built in phone w/ voice command, satellite radio
The car is in like new condition, no dings or scratches; it has not been driven hard. Tires and brakes are original equipment. All maintainance has been performed. It has never been in an accident and has never been smoked in. The car has been fun and great to drive. Unfortunately, personal circumstances require that it be replaced soon. Any help you can give will be appreciated. The first dealer that I went to offered to trade the car for $80,000 and, maybe I am wrong, but based on what I have seen on the internet, that seemed extremely low. Thanks for your help.

Here's an '02 of the same ilk:
    http://pennsylvania-auto-sales.ebizautos.com/detail.aspx?iid=788458&anchor=/2002/Mercedes-- - Benz/S55-AMG/Sedan/

The seller is a friend of mine; from what I know about him, he's got betwee 47 and 50 bucks in this car... I know it's older and has more than double the miles, but it might help you gauge the market. Not many of these around, to be sure...

The big question is, who needs/wants an $80k used car?
It isn't so much what "should" it be worth, it's who's gonna buy it. As opposed to a 2005 Accord, say.

It has not been driven hard
It hasn't??? Then what's the point of having it???

    Good luck,
    -Mathias

A '97 5 series with 130K miles, 4 accidents on carfax, a dead window regulator, a leaking something, & you got over $8500? I'd be doing cartwheels around my front yard right now if I were you. I'm more concerned about the buyer at this point.....btw has his check cleared?

Terry, we are hoping to trade this one in around Feb. or March. Edmunds TMV says $15,281 for trade and KBB says $15,125. If I can get $15K considering the following I would be thrilled. We are looking at an '06 Infiniti FX35 and I am not sure how lenient they will be with the trade in value. This model is still an "Editors Pick" and consumer reports still rates it a "Best Family Sedan". What does your crystal ball say?

Berks County, PA (between Philly & Reading PA)
2003 VW Passat GLX, 4dr Sedan
    2.8L V6, FWD
    5 Sp. Auto ("AutoStick")
    46,000 mi
Medium Green Metallic Ext / Black Leather Int
Vehicle Stability Control (only avail. option - GLX is fully loaded)

    Condition:
Overall good condition, just needs an int & ext detail
All Weather Mats installed since day 1
Back seats pristine - only used a handful of times
Front seats good condition, needs some leather conditioner
Front passenger seat has a small scratch in the leather (I am told this can be repaired by a specialist through through a dealer, just never scheduled it)
Will replace tires for st. inspection this month
    Rear Brakes replaced @ 32,400mi
All maintenance performed by VW dealers,
and all recipts retained except 1 - Cannot find recipt for rear brake replacement,
will try to get copy from dealer.
90K 3rd Party Ext. Warranty (Transferrable)

    Other: Clean CarFax
1 SMALL Kiss on the drivers door
1 Accident @ 22,000mi (Hit on drivers rear bumper while car parked)
Bumper, Drivers Rear quarter panel, & light assemblies replaced.
Reputable body shop used and paint match is exact.

    Warranty Work:
    -5,500 Instrument Cluster Replaced
-9,500 Pinched Vacuum Fuel Line Replaced
    -26,500 Ignition Coil Pack Replaced
    -32,400 Trunk Struts Replaced
    -39,000 Fuel Pump Replaced
    -40,000 Brake Fluid Resovior Replaced

(Still Needs & Will Take Care Of)
-46,000 Rear Drivers window off track
    -46,000 Heated Seats Recall

ADDL QUESTION: How much are we required to disclose during the trade regarding the warranty work and the accident dammage? CarFax is 100% clean and the average bear would never be able to tell it had body work. I do not mind disclosing, but why would I if I am not obligated to?

    Thanks so much! AudreyM

If you are not planning on trading it in within the next couple of weeks, repost when you are ready as market conditions can change dramatically between now and then.

As to disclosing the prior body damage. Any good used car manager will be able to spot the work. The warranty repairs do not need disclosed but anyone can get that from a VW dealer with the VIN.

If you are selling or trading in the car, and they ask if it has had any prior body work or been in an accident then you legally have to disclose it.

    .... **Hi Terry

Two approx. 2" hairline scratches in passenger side door, can be air brushed out according to body shop.
    Paul
    ================================

Your a lurker ....? .. I used to do that until I had to wear one of those ankle bracelets for 3 months .. I think my probation is up in January ...

    In the Wilkes Barre/Altoona area ....? ... greeeat description - thanks ...

Sounds like it could be a nice one ... we have a 03 Malibu LS with 30,000 short miles, V6, hydes, good color combo, we got the hole in the roof, spoiler, tunes, power seat and you say it's in pretty good shape except for a K-Mart collision and a few little scratches, we have some new round things, stoppers and the service is 100% .... if it's as clean as you think it is, then trade side in and around the low/mid $7's, might get a dealer to stagger towards the $8,0 figure because of the low miles and all of the nice extra's ....

Down Retail Rd ....? .. ya know the drill by now .. a super detail from the Dukes, a Big Ad in some Big area's, finish any service and have the history and all the paperwork super glued to your forehead and: $10,495 *asking* and cut and snip at $9,5/$9,9 ....

    Don't forget the update .....

    Terry. ;)
