**Looking for an approximate TIV - possibly for a new Acura TL: Location: St. Louis, MO 2003 Mercedes CL600 Turbo Coupe 32,000 miles Black w/black interior Options: Parking sensors, keyless ignition, sport package, adaptive cruise control. No damage, new rubber, service records taped to the dash, seats hovered in. ============================
Hey Kirstie .....
The color is right, the miles are almost low, Sport pack, we got some back-up beep beep, no-hands cruise, we got some new rubber, serviced and the seats are still waiting to be sat on ...... IF if if if if if, it's super clean, glows in the dark, no paint by numbers, no curb burners, it "stands tall" and needs -0- ...... then trade side (depending on the dealer) in and around the low/mid $58ish figure, might get a dealer to wander into the $59ish range, I would be doin' handstands if it hit the big six-oh figure .... these are nice drivers, but I don't think you're goin' to get the "big money" cuz' of the area and the time of the year ...
Maybe consider a little Retail Rd action ... you'll probably will need to enter into the Dallas/Chicago/Nashville market via computer, Ebay or you next door neighbors big mouth ..l.o.l... you know the deal, finish any service, get with the Picasso of the city to do the detail, some great pics and a super spread Ad and: $71,900 *asking* and whine and cry at $68,5/$69,5 -- but take it ..... I have stupid feeling that $69,0 will be the target selling price because of the big (crazy, silly, nutty) numbers in all the books .....
You got my interest so let me know what happens ... whats the pay-off ...??
Right as usual, Terry. I got $9500 less the cost of the window regulator-call it around $9150. Carmax offered $5000, but I had decided that I was going to keep it unless I could get at least $9000 for it. I'm fortunate in that I have the reputation of being obsessive-compulsive about the mechanical and cosmetic condition of my cars. As a result, all I've had to do to move one is put the word out and/or place a free ad in the local BMW Club newsletter. In every case the car has been gone within a week.
Terry, if you could dust off your crystal ball and let me get some numbers from you, I would appreciate it. I'm going this week to work out a deal, probably, for a 2006 Land Rover LR3 HSE.
Color: Desert Silver (beige) with Java leather (tan)
Major Options: Sunroof, heated front seats with memory for 3 people, rain sensor wipers, parktronic (front and rear), AM/FM with cassette and 6 CD player, Navigation system with 9 CD's, 3rd seat option, airbags all around, front air deflector, Mercedes mud flaps
Also, bi-xenon headlamps with washers, power fold mirrors, power third row pop-out windows, rear net in cargo area.
Condition: "good", a few rock chips on the front and hood (typical Mercedes), no curb burns, no accidents, no re-paints, shiny paint, clean interior, never smoked in, no french fry invasions. Drivers seats has a little wear from sliding in and out.
The bad... a cracked windshield... price as if it was replaced.
Tires - 75% remaining Brakes- new brakes and rotors 1,000 miles ago Maintenance- all maintenance kept up to date

No payoff... purchased with cash. A swap for the Acura TL would free up some $ for other ventures. At this point it's just a "thinking about," but I'm kinda pushing the "go" button hard on this one. I'll let you know if he decides to let go of it.

Hi Terry, Want to trade in my wife's '99 Windstar SE on a new Sienna. Please let me know what to expect for a trade.
Milwaukee, WI 89,500 miles, 3.8 liter, Silver The usual minor cosmetic dings, no collision damage ever, a little on the "well-used" side on the interior, non smoker Everything works (at least at this moment), tires OK Power side doors, side airbags, rear heat/ac
I hope the buyer doesn't read this board, & see that both Terry, & Carmax valued the car at $5000. (And too bad for him he didn't ask about it here himself before buying). That's some amazing reputation, that you can get $9000 for a $5000 car--I was thinking $6500 tops, selling it privately.....I gotta go buy some more Zymol for my bmw.....
I'm reposting this as I haven't seen an answer to mine yet. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
I live in the Los Angeles, & have got a 2001 VW Beetle GL, techno blue, am/fm/cassette, cloth interior, power windows, auto, cruise control, 54k miles, front & side air bags, abs. No major work done other than normal maintenance. Clean interior, runs great, paint still shines. One quarter size ding on passenger door & one scratch (about 3 in. long - not deep) on driver side door. Other than these two issues, it's been very well taken care of. Kelly says about $8500 as a trade in & edmunds says about $7k as a trade in... your thoughts? Any help would be great. Thanks in advance!

Hey Terry. I actually am working on numbers this week, so if you can, what should I hold out for on a trade in on:
2005 Scion tC Dark Gray (flint mica) 11,000 miles, 5 speed (of course). other than a couple tiny scratches and normal inside wear, looks very sharp No hits/runs/errors (or paintwork). Details up nice. All the normal stuff, but NO side balloons.
Still in NJ, where the crappy cold weather must be giving car dealers a migraine (unless they are selling AWD I suppose).
I'm hoping you can put a trade-in and a private sale value on my rig:
In Southern NJ (near Philly), 2001 RAV4 AWD -w/Quick-order pkg (ac, sound, pw/locks/mirrors, cruise; no sunroof, no leather, no alloys) -auto trans -white -67,500 miles -front brakes were dealer re-done within 1,000 miles -all svc records, oil changes every 5k miles -maybe 5k miles left on the rubber -vgc, semi-annual hand waxings, shiny like a new dime, only blemish in or out is one hard-to-see door ding on passenger side.
Mark: After 3 re-posts and Terry hasn't answered, it cannot be that he missed it... maybe he has given you an answer in the past that may still be pertinent ? I know from experience If I were you I'd get retail values from TMV, KBB, NADA and take an average and use this as a guide. Sometimes we gotta let Terry earn a living too... :P
Good luck with the trade going from an ML to a LR, which imo is a bold move...Hope the gamble pays off...
Hi, I have a blue, 2003 mustang GT 2 door coupe with 5,700 miles that has been stored 6 mos of the year since purchase. It has 6 CD player with the special sound changing menu. Eg: auditorium, church, news, etc. It has air and power window, doors & 6 way seat, leather seats. No sun roof. Automatic transmission. Please give me an idea of the best price to expect for a trade in. Thanks Donna
Repost using the format right above where you type in your information and do not miss anything. Believe it or not, where that car lives right now is going to make a huge difference on value.
Considering a local dealer has the twin to your car with sunroof advertised right now for $12,995, the winter demand for the car cannot be too high. We had 3 to 5 inches of snow already this month and tonights temperature is expected to be zero F.

Terry (and gang): If a dealer acquires a car via a lease return, how does that affect his acquisition cost? Does the lessor turn the car into BMW and then does the dealer actually buy the car back from BMW at a predetermined price? I'm looking into purchasing a lease return 2003 540i from a BMW dealership and I'm trying to see if there's any wiggle room at all-
Description of car: 2003 540i, steptronic auto, sport package, sterling grey on black, premium audio, cold weather package, very good condition, CPO, mild paint chips, 44K miles, new tires, dealer maintained, no accidents, one owner, Chicago suburb- what should I be looking to pay for this car? THANKS in advance-

I'm not quite sure of the question, so let me ramble for a few minutes ......
Right now the car belongs to BMWFS .. and I'm guessing the dealer has a "drop-off" sitting on his lot because the lease is up or it just got traded (or both) -- "or" did he just buy it at the auction ..? ....
Let say it's a drop off (the lease is up) then the dealer probably paid in and around the residual for it ... if it went the auction route, then he probably paid in and around the $32ish range .. add some service, drop the CPO into it, a little this and a little that, and it probably hits the table at in and around the $34ish figure .. figure it's tumbleweed time and the dealer would probably cut it loose for "around" the $36/$37 zipcode ....... what are they asking ...?
I just have a stupid feelin' that it's a drop-off because most Bimmer dealers aren't lookin' at 45k "anythings" this time of the year ........
Well, I am coming back to the answer man, because I have found you to be spot on in the past....................
I am looking to trade the following:
2004 Honda Accord V6-Desert Mist in color (champagne) with tan interior.
28,900 miles, new tires 2000 miles ago, no scratches, dents, repaints, seats REALLY do look hovered over, not sat in. Paint looks like the day I picked it up.
Automatic of course, rear spoiler, honda foglights, leather seats, all the standard EX V6 stuff, 3m clear bra on the front (yes, I know it does not add value, but I wanted to note it), honda wood trim.
I have a stack of records for everything ever done to the car, down to wiper blades..........
So, what is this thing worth in trade (looking at a Pilot), as well as if I tried to sell it private party.
Location is in Greensboro, NC.
Thanks in advance Terry, I always appreciate your input!
Hello. Can you give me a true value to expect at trade-in. I realize that SUV's have tanked in the past 6 months. Not sure if TMV,KBB have caught up. Zip code: 75081
2002 Grand Cherokee Laredo 2WD, 6cyl. Charcoal Gray. Black Cloth interior. Moonroof. Excellent overall condition but needs new front tires. 25K miles.
I posted a few days ago. Posting again, Thanks in advance.
Terry, what can I say... many THANKS !!! You were right on the money. The dealer offered $1800 on the trade(we said no), then $2100(said no), and then said ok final offer is $2500 and will knock off $100 off the new car or go to Carmax and try to sell it. Went to Carmax and sold it for $3700 !!!!! cuz of the low low miles. I just wanna say thanks again for all the help, I feel better than the guy who is trading his ML500 for a LandRover :-)

Sounds like it could be a nice one ... but there's is no such thing as excellent unless you're driving a 05 SC430 with 3,100 miles ...........
We got the right color combo on this dude, auto, leather bun warmers, tunes, stripes, spoiler, CPO and looooow miles ...... if it's as clean as you think it is, no visits to Maaco, seats been hovered in, service is 110%, no K-mart collisions, deep sneaks and it looks and drives like an 05 .... then trade side, "bingo" the low/mid $17's - and Wango Tango you're there at $17,700 .... great price for a nice convert ....
Down retail Rd..? ... gotta a map ..? .. cuz' your shootin' for the Charlotte/Hotlanta/Miami corridor .. it's still warm and plenty of convert buyers goin' on ...
Finish any service, then you need the Dukes of Detail, someone that can shoot 15/20 superb Mona Lisa pics of this beauty, then you can go Ebay - or my personal favorite, drop a big daddy 14 day Donald Trump Ad in the Charlotte/Atlanta/Miami big papers (and their online service) have all the history and service papers stuck to your forehead and: $23,950 *asking* and blow and go at the first $22,9/$23,5 ..... properly done, it won't last long ... the low miles, the right color and the CPO save this one .. don't get greedy, it's a Volvo not a Versace ...
...... You did good ... the wood was $245, the labor to the store was $180++ and the mats cost them $175 ....
So nobody will be sending their kids off to college on this deal .. let alone the cute receptionists down to the Bahama's, especially with their floor plan costing them $110 a month on this King Kong .... a good deal for you and only a fair deal for them ..
I suspect this question would have been asked before, but I gotta ask you again.
How is it that you know about just every car/truck/SUV/coupe/etc...etc... out there ? Do you have like a book sitting on your lap as you type to check out these numbers ? Time and time again, your number always come up ACES... I mean how do you do it ? If I can be half as good as you, my income would be in the upper stratosphere... Really...
Excellent job... keep it up... and don't ever ever retire.

Down Retail Rd.? .. this is for your friend at work, right ..? .. it all depends on how good of a friend he/she really is - $20,900 *asking* and $19,9/$20,5 gets a new owner ..... tiny little miles - can get em' can't find em' ... ... whats he want to pay you .....?
Hi. We want to trade our '01 Acura MDX - Touring (no NAV). It's Deep Mahogany Pearl (almost a burgundy), with running boards, and has 48,000 miles. All the websites give me "fair" trade-in numbers around $19,000. No dealer has offered more than $15,200.
I'll probably sell it myself, but why the big difference? The car is really in "good" condition, but the dealers are telling me they never give more than "fair" on the appraisal. Even then, they're way below KKB, edmunds.com, and NADA numbers, and admit it.
The last post on this forum for the MDX a few months ago seemed to say that the '01's should be in the $21,000 trade-in range.

It's a balmy 3 (yes, that's one digit) degrees here in Chicago. Mom may FINALLY have found some new wheels, please tell me what you think this strange bird is worth retail, wholesale, whatever:
02 MB E320 4Matic wagon silver/ash interior all the usual stuff, plus: third seat BOSE system with changer winter package tele-aid I think it has xenons (has the side mirror signals), but they aren't mentioned Supposedly excellent condition (aren't they all?) Indianapolis area CarFax clean, one owner from KY, corporate lease 82k (!) miles (there's the rub--haven't seen the tires, service records, etc. Maybe it needs service?)
The price, even with those miles, seems really low (these were $60k new, right?). I'm not thrilled with an 82k Mercedes, but her old one has 4xxk and it doesn't seem to bother her, so? Please give me some numbers and maybe I'll be right. I'll keep you posted. Thanks!!
UPDATE: Sold the Bonneville. Got $2,200 for it, but did not replace the cracked windshield, and only ran free crappy ads in Craigslist (don't you love people who ask for advice then don't take it?)
A little less then Terry predicted but then again I did not follow his recommendation for detailing it, nice ad, fixed windshield, etc.
Okay. Going to be trading or selling this car very soon. Trade-in value? Probably send it down retail road. Value?
Dealer offered $7,000 trade, but the price on the new Subaru was too high.
Portland, Oregon 2000 Subaru Outback limited wagon 2.5 4cyl automatic AWD 129,000 BIG MILES Color: Winestone (dark red) Usual limited options: leather, sunroofs, cd player and subwoofer.
Good condition. One owner. Interior has some wear. A small tear in the rear seat and a few scratches on the inside (big dogs). Outside has the usual parking lot scratches/dings. Nothing major. New tires, brakes good, complete maintenance.
Two minor accidents. Rear hatch and bumper cover replaced after being rear-ended, and a small ding in a rear quarter panel from a mail box repaired.
These cars depreciate badly (of course, it does have 82k); they're asking $19900. I told her to have it checked out (the place that fixes her current car will do so for $95), make sure they did the 60k service (I imagine prolly ~$2 grand) and that the tires are decent (prolly another thou). This one could be a gamble either way.
The guy keeps asking when we plan to upgrade so he can latch on to the present one. We have not talked price since we have not made any firm plans for the next car.
Will let you know how it all shakes out. And yes, the miles and condition are as I posted.
P.S. Suburb of Circle City? Yes, if 110 miles qualifies as suburban distance.
Dealer is giving me $3500 trade in.....i think it's a little low. What you think?

Hi; picking up my new RR on friday. Paid 5600 under sticker with 2,000 coupon plus dealer discount. Better price than I paid on my old 03 RR that I then traded last year for the LR3. Had the lr3 for a year but I missed the luxury of the RR,so I am back! Hope there are no gremlins lurking! For those considering a new range rover, there is nothing else like it on the road. I've owned and driven every luxury vehicle out there and there is nothing like a Range Rover. They are truly fit for a king!
From the dealers perspective: It is winter and either one of two things, the car is a sports car with little winter appeal or it is just going to be another hard to move 5 speed on the lot.
All the non-factory stuff that is on the car, exhaust, etc also hurts trade in value.
You need to get that thing advertised for private party sale at any of the Contour SVT fan clubs for the best dollar outcome.
I agree with dkuhajda.. The Contour SVT has a pretty good following among certain mis-guided enthusiast types.. ... This is a car that you should sell privately...

**Looking for an approximate TIV - possibly for a new Acura TL:
Location: St. Louis, MO
2003 Mercedes CL600 Turbo Coupe

Black w/black interior
Options: Parking sensors, keyless ignition, sport package, adaptive cruise control.
No damage, new rubber, service records taped to the dash, seats hovered in.

Terry :shades:
Nothin' like a $5grand "obsessive-compulsive" habit to make Christmas a little nicer ..l.o.l..... you did good, reeeeal good.!

No payoff... purchased with cash. A swap for the Acura TL would free up some $ for other ventures. At this point it's just a "thinking about," but I'm kinda pushing the "go" button hard on this one. I'll let you know if he decides to let go of it.

Good luck with the trade going from an ML to a LR, which imo is a bold move...Hope the gamble pays off...
I have a blue, 2003 mustang GT 2 door coupe with 5,700 miles that has been stored 6 mos of the year since purchase. It has 6 CD player with the special sound changing menu. Eg: auditorium, church, news, etc. It has air and power window, doors & 6 way seat, leather seats. No sun roof. Automatic transmission.
Please give me an idea of the best price to expect for a trade in. Thanks
Donna
Considering a local dealer has the twin to your car with sunroof advertised right now for $12,995, the winter demand for the car cannot be too high. We had 3 to 5 inches of snow already this month and tonights temperature is expected to be zero F.
When you repost, do not forget the location.
I, too, hope the move from the ML to the LR will be a good one, if not, I'll find something else.
Thanks for your imput. Mark :surprise:

Didn't I see Elvis at the golf course yesterday ..?
Soooo .. we got a 02 ML500 with 49 klicks .... we got a broken windshield (must be from your Ex-wife), bun warmers, slider, tunes, Nav, back-up beep beep (twice), blinders, 3rd seat, newer round things and fresh stopaholics ........ no paint, no french fry invasions and no drive by's .? .. trade side, in and around the mid/tall $19's low low low $20ish figure, so the dealer is on-line .....
>>> 2006 Land Rover LR3 HSE, list $55,525. They will come off a thousand, with tax, title, and $259 doc fee, we are at a difference of $37,524.80 ...
I don't do taxes and flea's, so your difference is $35,525 (MSRP is $55,525 and your's is worth $20,0 hard money) ....... $1,000 off..?? .. I dunno, it's 19 days before the fat guy hits the chimney, and that means tumbleweed times for most dealers til' the middle of January ... I would think you could trade for "around" the $32/$33ish figure and your Benz .... plus the tax, the wax and the roof racks .......

These little dudes have been getting some stiff money .... the color is right, the miles are ho-hum, we have a few baby kisses here and there, and no side balloons .. side balloons are one of the best inventions since milk and cookies, but most folks would rather have a Sirius radio instead .... trade side, in and around the mid/tall $14's low low low $15's depending on the dealer .....
Happy hunting .........

THANKS in advance-
===========================
Terry :shades:

I hope this helps ............
Terry
So nobody will be sending their kids off to college on this deal .. let alone the cute receptionists down to the Bahama's, especially with their floor plan costing them $110 a month on this King Kong .... a good deal for you and only a fair deal for them ..
Nice vehicles --- enjoy..!

How is it that you know about just every car/truck/SUV/coupe/etc...etc... out there ? Do you have like a book sitting on your lap as you type to check out these numbers ? Excellent job... keep it up... and don't ever ever retire.

Sounds like another nice one ... where's my check book when I need it.?
Dayton .. that's almost a a suburb of Indianapolis ..l.o.l...
What can I say..? .. IF ~ it's truly a nice GS .. that means no paint, no KFC stuck to the ceiling, no Starbucks floating in the console and you haven't bounced the wheels off every curb between you and Cincinnati .... then trade side, in and around the super tall $15's low/mid $16's ....
Terry.
Thanks.

For those considering a new range rover, there is nothing else like it on the road. I've owned and driven every luxury vehicle out there and there is nothing like a Range Rover. They are truly fit for a king!
It is winter and either one of two things, the car is a sports car with little winter appeal or it is just going to be another hard to move 5 speed on the lot.
All the non-factory stuff that is on the car, exhaust, etc also hurts trade in value.
You need to get that thing advertised for private party sale at any of the Contour SVT fan clubs for the best dollar outcome.
