I see that NADA and KBB wholesale differ quite a bit. I plan on trading a clean 1999 Jeep silver Grand Cherokee with 62k miles and good tires for an Acura MDX.
What can I expect from the Acura dealer relative to KBB wholesale? Also, can I get a better price from a Jeep dealer, Carmax or someplace else. I don't want to go the private party route.
.. **However, was in accident (front end) over 2 years ago (approx $6K damage). Airbags never deployed. I can't tell that it has been repaired, but I'm not a professional. Carfax shows NO accidents, however.
NADA says $14,000 trade, Edmunds says $10,900, KBB says $8500. Both dealers I have been to offer $8500. Is that really all there is? I can't help feeling I should get more. Thanks for your help..** ==============================

Let's look at the positives here .. it's black, it's in Houston and it's a meat clever, should I say more....?

Need some help here. I am trying to get some numbers on my trade-in value for my 2003 Nissan Murano SL 2WD, leather, premium pkg, moonroof, bose 6-disc, new tires, etc. It has 48K miles on it. But here's the kicker - I live in Colorado and don't know how much the 2WD will diminsh value. I have to admit that I've only seen 2 other 2WD Muranos here - the rest are AWD. Looking to trade for an '06 Audi A4 2.0T Quattro. Thanks for your help.
Exc condition, auto, spoiler, silver, 28K miles. Never been hit. Deasler maintained. About to sell private or trade to dealer. How much is it worth? Live in PSL Florida Thanks
Black is a bad exterior color in most of the southern states because it absorbs more heat than lighter colors. I think that Texas tends to be a big market for Chevy/GMC, Dodge, and Ford trucks, and probably less so for imports.
I traded my 05 tC for an 05 Towncar. Details are below. I'm enjoying the soft ride and the large amount of storage space. Toyo builds a real nice car. But, I just couldn't resist the goodfella. The net was tC + 10K.
Location: Land of the Kennedy's Hyannis, MA Year/Make/Model: 05 Scion tC (purchased 9/04) Body Style: 2dr Engine: 2.4 liter auto Driveline: FWD Mileage: 15000 Color: [exterior - Azure Pearl/interior - Black leather] Major Options: Katzkin black leather, all-weather mats, mudgaurds, wheel locks. Condition: Couple of small scratches from who knows where.. Interior is clean. No bumper cars, gummie bears, or Teddy bridge jumps. Tires - rotated at 10K. They seem 20%? worn. But, not sure how long these puppies last. Brakes - good Maintenance - all maintenance on time at dealer. Traded in for $14000.
Purchased: Location: Hyannis, MA Year/Make/Model: 05 Lincoln Towncar Signature Limited Body Style: 4dr Engine: 8 cylinder, auto Driveline: RWD Mileage: 18,500 Color: White Major Options: In addition to Limited options, Moonroof. Orig MSRP 45-47K. Condition: small scratch on the dashboard. Otherwise, very clean. Paid: $23,999
An Elco is an electronic gizmo that measures the thickness of the paint on metal surfaces. When paint is applied at the factory it is a uniform thickness. A panel that's a different thickness or is not uniform has been resprayed.
28k miles Features: all the usual EX features plus rear lip spoiler, extra-cost Honda 17" alloy wheels with 50% tread remaining, tint, and aftermarket integrated iPod connection. Does not have navigation system. Color: Black with tan leather interior (I know--a bad color for the south!) Location: Houston, TX Defects: 1 Door ding; Same door was repainted due to karge scratch (no body work, just paint).
Car could use a good detail (polish paint, shampoo carpets), but I assume that is something the dealer will do regardless.
I am trading it for a new Jetta TDI. How much can I expect to get for my car? Edmunds TMW says $18,465 but I think that is a bit optimistic.
I am about to have two cars and can only keep one. Need some values on what they are worth.
Here's the first: 99 Chevy S10 LS, ext cab 4.3 v6, Rambo knife, 2wd 191,000 miles black outside, tan inside Pioneer cd/mp3 player, speakers, and XM radio (integrated into tuner, not the kind that sticks on the dash/windshield)manual windows, etc. interior....manufactured by GM (do I really need to say more?) Exterior: Scratches: yes Dents: two small ones Repairs: one small but nasty little dent repaired on the bed. I cant tell that it was even damaged even by looking at the backside of the metal, but looks like it was painted by a blind man with Parkinsons disease. (not really that bad but there is one little spot that makes me wonder what the hell happened.) Practically indestructible, the rear bumper has caused quite a bit of mayhem with only a few scratches. And some girl backed into the side of it a couple weeks ago and it caused NO damage to the truck. (honestly) Other: All maintenance/repairs done on time and by me except for tires, alignments, and the above bodywork. Two almost new tires and Yokohama Maypop GT's (I ran over a nail that couldn't be fixed hence the two new tires.) Everything works like it should and the truck runs as good as a truck this old could run.
The second: 95 Honda Accord LX 2 door 2.2 non V-TEC, meat cleaver ~160,000 miles gold outside, tan inside Interior has a bunch of stickers in it but would probably clean up nicely. Has 15" alloys off of an ex model Runs and drives good.
The rest of the story:
The S10 is mine. I've owned it since 2001.
The Accord is currently my sisters and has been in the family since 2001 and, coincidently, we also know the original owner who traded it in to a local dealer. A couple of years ago this car was wrecked. It destroyed the right fender and door (no frame damage) and the insurance company totaled it. And yes it has a salvage title. It was bought back from the insurance and the fender and bumper were replaced and the door repaired (should have been replaced imo). Then a few months after it was finally fixed, my sister did almost the exact same thing to it except it didnt get the door and it got a piece of the hood. The hood and fender were bent more or less to its original shape but it looks like a crinkled sheet of paper. She bought a new car last year and has been trying to sell it for $1200 (by word of mouth) but nobody has ever came up with the money. Anyway, she is moving and has to get rid of it.
I plan on going to get it in a week or two and driving it around to decide which one I want to keep.

Most of the answers to this mystery will be reflected by the color, location and the condition ----- (which you forgot to put down) ------ anyway, no matter what, Kbb will be a heck of a lot closer than Nada by leaps and bounds ......

It's spring on Long Island - about 30 miles east of NYC - & my wife has her eye on a new Lexus. What can we get for her current ride?
1999 Lexus ES 300 Mileage: 86.5K Exterior color: light green-grey (I forget what Lexus called this color. Sage, maybe?) Interior color: taupe leather Options: in-dash CD changer vehicle stability control heated leather seats w/driver side memory sunroof Exterior condition: no hits, no accidents, no repaints. Car has 8-10 of the usual suburban parking lot nicks. Paint shows no signs of fading & shines up nicely. Overall, somewhat better than average for a car of this age & mileage. Interior condition: Outside driver's seat bolster shows signs of wear: scratches in leather. Otherwise, interior is clean. No French fry attacks or fruit fly infestations. Smokers can't ride in our cars. Tires: all 4 were replaced in early 2004 - about 25K miles ago. Recently, our mechanic found that the front 2 were badly worn. He realigned the front & replaced those tires. As you'd expect with a front-driver, the rear tires, which don't do much work, have most of their tread life in front of them. Mechanical issues: none. All major systems (A/C, etc.) are performing to spec. Everything works. We're looking for private sale & trade values. A relative has expressed interest in buying the car.
While not an expert, I think common sense dictates that trading in an SUV right now won't exactly extract dealers falling all over themselves to stick it on their used lot.
That said, I just saw a PR from GM stating that demand for their new big SUVs (Escalades and Yukon XLs) is higher than they expected. But, they're also already offering rebates on the all new Tahoe. Go figure.
I've got a year old, '05 4Runner. Very nice SUV. But, I'm not even thinking it will bring top dollar if I was in the market for anything else right now.
I think the trade numbers are down. I have an 04 4Runner and was given a 22-23 number in February and then a 19-20 number last month. wamted to get something with better MPG, but I think I'll just keep it now. hopefully the trade number will stabilze soon.

Can I get an approx trade value and retail (sell it myself) for the following?
In Memphis TN 1991 Mazda 626 GT auto/fwd TURBO charged 2.2L, 4 cyl VG mechanical condition (everything works fine) 130,000 miles pl/pw/power sunroof/cruise/alloy wheels black exterior - paint in great condition (car was garaged most of it's life) gray cloth seats/beige dash/door panels in good condition, no rips or tears no body damage except for a little paint peeling off of passenger rear window frame (not body) tires are only 3 mo old i am second owner and have all of the service history (both from previous owner all done by dealer and mine) Thanks in advance! I'm buying a new car,and need to sell one of my current ones...Could you give me an estimate for trade-in value and a retail price if I sold one of them myself?

Body a little beat up (side moldings loose, etc.), but no signs of rust. Overall, shows pretty nice for the age. Runs well enough. So, overall an average older car.
I was thinking $2,999 or $2,500 asking, take the first offer much over 2K?

any info is helpful - she's looking to sell soonish...
I'd love to find out the "real" trade-in value for my '00 Jeep Cherokee Classic. I'm looking to buy a new car and am wondering if I'm better off trying to sell it on my own. Here's the stats:
Location: Central Jersey Year/Make/Model: '00 Jeep Cherokee Classic Body Style: 4dr Engine: 6 cylinder, auto Driveline: 4wd Mileage: 87000 Color: Burgundy w/tan cloth interior major options: all power, overhead console, power driver seat Brakes and tires were replaced 1 year ago. Maintenance: done regularly Clear history, only a few minor scratches (normal wear/tear)
Hey Terry... Very likely to follow the Subaru lust, so can I get an idea on the value of my current ride?
In Wilmington, NC... 2002 Honda Accord EX V6 Coupe 64000 miles gold with tan hides all the EX goodies Tires 40% worn Front brakes 20% worn... rears maybe 50? Maintenance performed to "severe" schedule in the Honda manual Interior is clean, leather maybe aging a little quick.
Exterior has no real dings or scratches, BUT... minor paint/body work to the RR quarter panel (struck by a large rock), driver's door (to fix a crease at the back lip of it when the wind flung it open against another car), and the rear bumper cover was replaced (got hit by a parking lot hit-and-run artist). All 3 of those repairs in the $500-700 range, but the kicker... I reported the hit-and-run to the police and it shows up on the Carsmack as an accident causing minor damage.
Big spread in the book values... how do you think I'll do trading it on a new Subie? Thanx in advance
Location: Orlando Florida Year/Make/Model: 2005 Honda Civic LX Special Edition Body Style: 2 dr coupe Engine: 4 cyl. auto. Driveline: FWD Mileage: 13000 Color: white exterior / tan interior Major Options: tinted windows, no other options, but the SE comes with rear spoiler, upgraded wheels and sound system Condition: a few kisses, a few "small" stains, about what is expected from a teen-age slob. Otherwise it's in "excellent" condition...LOL Original tires, brakes, maintenance up to date done by the dealer Other: a curb jumped in front of the car, had to get two new wheels & tires, some steering components replaced and the side mirror, about $2k in repairs.
The Service Engine Light came back on within 2 days on my '03 Sentra GXE this afternoon. 3 year warranty runs out next Monday. Car is an '03 GXE model with the power pack & the bozo sound option package. Slushbox tranny with just shy of 29k. 4 meaty sneakers and the normal dings on the outside & really clean inside. You gave me a figure of between $8250. and $8900. private sale last week. A guy at work wants to buy it, but am afraid that pesky light will be back after they attempt the 6th fix. If I do sell to a stranger and the car has been fixed, would I be obligated to inform him or her about the previous warranty service visits? I feel it would be the right thing to do actually. But that might scare away all potential buyers? Might also pusue the Lemom Law thing here in Florida but have a feeling I'd loose there to. HELP!!!!
Most states do not require a private seller to disclose things like repair issues. That is why it is ALWAYS a good idea to have any car you buy froma private party inspected by a competent mechanic. However, it would be the right thing to do to inform a potential buyer of the car's idiosyncracies.
As for Lemon law, your car may be too old to have a case. Also, why is the light coming on? Is it for the same thing, or different things? If the light has been coming on consistently for the same problem, and the dealer has been unable to repair the car, then you may have the beginnings of a case.
SLC Utah 2002 Mazda B2300 SE Ext Cab 2.3L 4 cyl 5-speed Manual RWD 37k miles Red with grey guts All the base SE options and nothing else - Air, CD, alloy wheels sliding rear window, rear jump seats. NO Cruise, PW, PL, Keyless, etc. Pretty nice shape. Original tires are getting pretty thin, inside of the bed is a bit scratched up from hauling around bikes. Interior is clean as a pin, shows that whole "pride of ownership" thing.
What should I be looking to get this for? The owner thinks it's in "excellent" condition, of course.
Update: he was asking $9800, I was thinking $8500 and he got insulted. Now his asking has dropped to $9300, so he may be getting a bit more practical.
Just comparing your car to what I see on autotrader and cars.com, I would list it for approx. $4K. But because of the gas issues right now, your numbers sound more reasonable. Let us know what he lists and sells the SUV for... interested in seeing how the market is.

Location: Augusta, Georgia Year/Make/Model: 2000 Kia Sephia Engine: 1.X liter, 4 cylinder, automatic Mileage: 65,000 Color: Cobalt Blue exterior/Grey interior (quite pretty when it is waxed)
Options: automatic, cassette, A/C. A/C is frosty.
Condition: Interior - The back seat needs to be replaced. Otherwise all it needs is some TLC and a good detailing.
Exterior - K-Mart parking lot special!!! Bumper dings galore. The paint is a Swirl-O-Matic carwash special. Handwashed/waxed (which covers up the swirl marks somewhat) now that my wife doesn't control it.

Maintenance: All regular maintenance since the car was purchased at 28k miles.

Thanks for your info, it was very helpful. We just closed on a new 07 Camry SE V6 for $100 over invoice. We recieved $17,900 on the trade of the 01 RX300.
We were quoted $17,900 about a month ago, but as we waited to take delivery of the Camry, about 5 weeks, I expected the dealer to reduce the trade amount on the RX300. But they stuck to their word.
*I believe the point was only that you would trade a vehicle with one of the best resale values on the planet for a vehicle with on of the worst resale values on the planet.*
It seems to be some sort of Automotive Law: The people who drive, or want to buy, the cars with the worst reputations, like Hyundais, are invariably the most stubborn about their decision. Must be something akin to the "Stockholm Syndrome".
There was a guy here a few months ago wanting to trade a mint condition newish Accord for a Hyundai--everybody told him he was Nuts......(same guy?).....

I know Terry is cutting out for the weekend, but maybe one of the others with a look at some auction reports can give me an idea... Mathias, or volvomax, maybe?
In Wilmington, NC 2002 Honda Accord EX Coupe V6 (auto of course) 64500 miles gold with tan leather interior All the EX goodies Tires not quite 50% worn (Yokohamas put on at 45K) Brakes 20-25% worn (fronts done at 53K) Maintenance performed per "severe" schedule in the Honda manual.
Interior is clean, no Swiss army knife action, no kids to start french fry wars... little bit of wear at the bottom of the outside bolster of the driver's seat tho. Exterior has no scratches or kisses but has had the rear bumper cover replaced, and minor dent and paint work to the drivers door and right rear quarter, all in separate instances (about $600 per event).
Without a close look other than seeing it when I test drove last week, the Subie dealer in FayetteNam wanted to put $10,0 on it... hinted that $10,5 might be allll the money while trying to sell me a new WRX wagon for sticker.
Am I smoking something to be looking for a bigger chunk of change trading this in on a WRX or a Legacy GT?
Well, The Subie dealer is probably a little light. If the car looks right, meaning the paint work isn't noticeable, the tires aren't unduly worn and its a clean car than its probably @ $11,000 maybe a wee bit more. On the other hand, if its 2 different colors and the tires are too worn and the bumper cover looks like it was repainted with a roller than your dealer is all over it.
I got a 2002 745Li (nicely optioned) with 50K miles a few dings and scratches for $34K in December. The car comes with full 6yr/100L bumper to bumper to warranty (the tranny is getting replaced right now since it was jerky). I know I did well but how well was it?

Hi I'm looking to trade my 2001 Subaru Outback and was wondering what to expect. They sure are a popular car where I live.
Green Bay, WI, 2001 outback, auto, AWD, 60k, Dark Blue in and out, alloy wheels, heated mirrors and seats, CD player, fake wood dash trim, there are a couple of door dings but the finish is otherwise good. interior is excellent, tires are near the end of their life, new brakes, oil changed every 3-5k,
99 LS400 - 1-owner, just turned 48k mi - black/tan mint condition, no scratches ext or int, all options except nav (incl factory nakamichi upgrade) - all records, services a real cherry
Wellllll actually had it appraised by my local Subie dealer...
He noticed the paint work... but that's a trained eye! He said that they did a good job with it, but it was evident by the tape lines on the seals around the rear quarter windows (can't pop those out on a Honda. The real bad news is that the incident with the bumper involved a police report, which shows up on the Carsmack as an accident resulting in minor damage.
So the verdict? He says $10,5 is all the money in trade... I was interested in a new Legacy GT that he's $500 over invoice.
I'm not pleased enough with that to do business, but how good or bad of a deal am I getting here? Any experts think I should reconsider?

Can't advise you on the price of the scooby do. But, I think that the dealer is on if the repair work is that noticeable AND its on Carfax. A bad carfax makes prospective used car buyers nervous. It does limit what you can ask and get for a used car.
Remember, its the difference figure that matters, not just what you get for your trade. Soemone can show you alot more for your car and just take it out of the discount that available.

Black is a bad exterior color in most of the southern states because it absorbs more heat than lighter colors. I think that Texas tends to be a big market for Chevy/GMC, Dodge, and Ford trucks, and probably less so for imports.

Features: all the usual EX features plus rear lip spoiler, extra-cost Honda 17" alloy wheels with 50% tread remaining, tint, and aftermarket integrated iPod connection. Does not have navigation system.
Color: Black with tan leather interior (I know--a bad color for the south!)
Location: Houston, TX
Defects: 1 Door ding; Same door was repainted due to karge scratch (no body work, just paint).
Car could use a good detail (polish paint, shampoo carpets), but I assume that is something the dealer will do regardless.
I am trading it for a new Jetta TDI. How much can I expect to get for my car? Edmunds TMW says $18,465 but I think that is a bit optimistic.
Here's the first:
99 Chevy S10 LS, ext cab
4.3 v6, Rambo knife, 2wd
191,000 miles
black outside, tan inside
Pioneer cd/mp3 player, speakers, and XM radio (integrated into tuner, not the kind that sticks on the dash/windshield)manual windows, etc.
interior....manufactured by GM (do I really need to say more?)
Exterior:
Scratches: yes
Dents: two small ones
Repairs: one small but nasty little dent repaired on the
bed. I cant tell that it was even damaged even
by looking at the backside of the metal, but
looks like it was painted by a blind man with
Parkinsons disease. (not really that bad but
there is one little spot that makes me wonder
what the hell happened.)
Practically indestructible, the rear bumper has
caused quite a bit of mayhem with only a few
scratches. And some girl backed into the side
of it a couple weeks ago and it caused NO
damage to the truck. (honestly)
Other:
All maintenance/repairs done on time and by me except for tires, alignments, and the above bodywork.
Two almost new tires and Yokohama Maypop GT's (I ran over a nail that couldn't be fixed hence the two new tires.)
Everything works like it should and the truck runs as good as a truck this old could run.
The second:
95 Honda Accord LX 2 door
2.2 non V-TEC, meat cleaver
~160,000 miles
gold outside, tan inside
Interior has a bunch of stickers in it but would probably clean up nicely.
Has 15" alloys off of an ex model
Runs and drives good.
And welcome back Terry. This thread is exponentially more interesting to read with you around.
What can I expect from the Acura dealer relative to KBB wholesale? Also, can I get a better price from a Jeep dealer, Carmax or someplace else. I don't want to go the private party route.
Thanks in advance for any helpful replies.
===============================
Most of the answers to this mystery will be reflected by the color, location and the condition ----- (which you forgot to put down) ------ anyway, no matter what, Kbb will be a heck of a lot closer than Nada by leaps and bounds ......
Acura (like most Honda dealers) aren't really known for their generous trade values ..... but if I had more information (which I don't) I could tell ya more .........

1999 Lexus ES 300
Mileage: 86.5K
Exterior color: light green-grey (I forget what Lexus called this color. Sage, maybe?)
Interior color: taupe leather
Options: in-dash CD changer
vehicle stability control
heated leather seats w/driver side memory
sunroof
Exterior condition: no hits, no accidents, no repaints.
Thanks for your help.

Both garage-kept cars that look absolutely great-paint is still quite glossy.
2001 Cadillac Catera w/$1,000 optional convience package. sage/shale leather..33,000 miles-not a mark on it.
2001 VW Passat GLS 1.8T/manual shift....no options whatsoever...44,000 miles
anthracite/tan cloth....Again,very pristine exterior..
Assuming it runs/drives well, for sub-1K, the salvage title shouldn't really matter, since it does have the magic H badge on it.
Still sounds like a better option than the S10, unless you need a truck for some reason.

So, overall an average older car.
I was thinking $2,999 or $2,500 asking, take the first offer much over 2K?

Tires 40% worn
Front brakes 20% worn... rears maybe 50?
Maintenance performed to "severe" schedule in the Honda manual
Interior is clean, leather maybe aging a little quick.

HELP!!!!
The Sandman :confuse:
However, it would be the right thing to do to inform a potential buyer of the car's idiosyncracies.
As for Lemon law, your car may be too old to have a case.
Also, why is the light coming on? Is it for the same thing, or different things?
If the light has been coming on consistently for the same problem, and the dealer has been unable to repair the car, then you may have the beginnings of a case.

We were quoted $17,900 about a month ago, but as we waited to take delivery of the Camry, about 5 weeks, I expected the dealer to reduce the trade amount on the RX300. But they stuck to their word.

No, actually he said it to customer after spending a day or two around the showroom ....

It seems to be some sort of Automotive Law: The people who drive, or want to buy, the cars with the worst reputations, like Hyundais, are invariably the most stubborn about their decision. Must be something akin to the "Stockholm Syndrome".

Thanx in advance...
--Ron
The Subie dealer is probably a little light.

I'd appreciate any opinions on how well I did on this deal.
