RX-8's are going thru between $16-17000 on the West Coast. Does your payoff include tax? If not, you will have to pay that as well. You should be able to sell that car for what you owe, even paying the tax.
2003 MPV LX 45,500 miles DVD system, rear A/C, heat, roof rack. Dark green exterior, tan interior. No body dents or damage, some scratches along doors (parking lot dings, etc). New tires at 30,000 (Yokohama Avid H4S) all other maintenance performed as per owners manual (have all receipts). Loan is paid off. If I was to sell myself, I'd ask $10,000 or so. Trade-in values vary widely according to several sites I've checked.

I'm in line for a new job, for which I'll have to drive quite a bit (no more public trans--don't know whether to be happy or sad, what with gas prices going up again). In any case, my current car (a '95 Saturn SL2 with over 160k) isn't going to cut it any more....I'd really like an Accord four-cylinder, five-speed sedan. I've seen a few around, wondering which sounds best (I actually prefer the pre-06 for the taillights, but could be persuaded otherwise):
03 EX-L, manual, black/tan leather, 88k but has 100k warranty, SUPER clean, one owner asking $127xx but it's been for sale a while (I like this one best aesthetically, but not crazy about 88k miles, Accord or not)
03 EX, silver/charcoal cloth, ~70.5k miles, at a local SAAB dealer, asking $11,5 (just lowered $500), again, growing whiskers
05 LX, charcoal, just under 60k miles, nice enough but boring compared to the EX (duh), $14k.
Also saw a nice-but-with-101k '03 white/tan EX-L for $10,9, an '03 LX with a bit under 90k for $9995, yada yada.
Accord prices are pretty static: more miles and/or less stuff (DX/LX)=lower price, there aren't too many screaming bargains, but prices on earlier 'current' Accords have at least gone down enough to justify possibly buying used. That said, anything over ~$15k, and I feel like I should just buy something new (not necessarily an Accord); I almost feel that way like even at $12k, rather than something four or five years old with 70k+ miles, not that $12k is a lot of money. But I want something I actually like if I'm going to make payments...understand, I'm almost 38, have lived in the city my entire adult life, and have never had a car that cost over $4000, so this is a 'big deal' to me. I'd like something nicer than a tin can, something my mom wouldn't mind riding around in, y'know?

Assuming that the miles are low, the M's are going thru auction @ $39,000 So, you don't have any trade equity. Private sale would be dicy too. You might make a little bit, but I don't know that it is worth it.

I know they're not the best value per se; the problem is, there isn't much else available in a mid-size with a manual transmission (I can't name a domestic with one, and don't want European hassles/expense). If I wanted an automatic, I could live with a Taurus/Impala/Malibu for half the price, which I may end up doing anyway. The only other mid-sized manuals out there are Camry (rare, and priced like Accords: I saw an '02 Camry, probably sans ABS or side airbags, claimed only 50k miles, but $11k) and Mazda6 (which I like, but aren't exactly cheap, either). I could go smaller (Corolla, Civic) but they're not really what I want, and are just as overpriced as their big brothers.
As for leasing, I dunno, if I could write it off, that'd be fine, but if I plan on keeping it over three years, it seems insane to throw probably $9k away and then finance it after that. Maybe I'll just see what this job pays and buy brand-new.
If you want a manual transmission, look at the Mazda6, Nissan Altima, and Subaru Legacy.
You can get manuals even with the upgraded engines on all 3 of those. Accords only came with a V6/manual starting very recently. Camrys haven't offered those for a while, IIRC.
Those are good choices, but good luck finding a Legacy for a decent price.. It seems they are in Accord territory..
Any reason you have to have a mid-size? I like the Mazda Protege.. You can find an '02-'03 completely loaded ES model with stick for $9K-$11K... and, it will have a lot less mileage than your Accord examples..

Well,in unmolested condition trade in is probably going to be in the $7-8,000 range. W/ the accidents, maye $5-6,000. It depends on how bad they were, the quality of the repairs and what the Carfax says.

Don't forget the Maxima. Pick any year from 95 or later depending on budget. The SE's came with leather, roof etc and quite a few 5-speeds would be available as well.
...forgot about the Altima. Those are pretty nice, though the interiors, IMO, don't compare to Accord's; I'll check prices. I'm not too keen on Maximas, don't really want or need six cylinders, and I want stellar gas mileage (other family car is a Jeep Wrangler, which uses $20 in gas about every half hour); though, just for the record, how are Maxima's repair records?
I may end up with another Protege, I LOVE them (I had a '90, first year built, that was my favorite car ever). My ex-neighbor had a recent version ('02 DX 2.0), that thing is so fun to drive. They are a lot more fun than a Civic or Corolla, for sure.
Yeah, I don't really need a mid-size; I'm basically single (well, no kids), not a 'huge' guy, live in the city (have a garage, though). This car, for all intents, will be a grocery-getter/commuter. I may check out some Proteges, or even Protege5s.
The Protege ES has basically all the options of the P5.. including 16" alloys... I like the P5 also, but they are a little more pricy, and much more likely to be automatic..
I always thought that the last generation Protege was exceptionally roomy for that size class..
I had an 02 Maxima with the 6-speed stick. It was an awesome car... surprised a few "posers" (including a sissy in a Boxter), and the gas mileage was great... I regularly pulled 30+ mpg on highway-only trips, on regular gas.
A little used car lot near my recently had a stick Camry. NOt sure of th emodel, but it was an '05, 5 speed, 4 cyl (almost positive), with a moonroof and cloth. Other than the leather, a competitor for my accord EX-L!

Check the Edmunds vehicle comparison function--I think the Altima is comparable in size to the Accord and Camry. I'm not fond of the facelift they did in 2004 or 05.
You are on the right track here. I have an 03 Accord LX with a 5 Speed and 45,000 miles that I'm trading in on a 530i this week. I would look for something like that, and try to stay away from the 80,000 mile ones. My car is in great shape, and I expect it will go to 150,000 with little problem, like my other Accords did. My circumstances changed and I can get a 530i, but I would take the 4cyl, 5speed Accord over any of those other cars in the thread. The ride, durability, economy (32 mpg hiway, 28 mixed), reliability are all great. Of course, this is my own opinion, but you will have to live with that car for a while, and the Accord ages much better than the Maxima, and is more comfortable than the smaller ones while being almost as efficient.
I think a manual is great for a sporty car. However, for stop and go big city commuting, I would think a manual would be the last thing I would want. I had a manual 89 Accord LXi many moons ago that was a fun to drive and super reliable. The manual was "fun" if I was in the mood to deal with it. But, I never leave the house without a glass of iced tea and, in the days before cupholders, often presented a major problem trying to shift gears and not spill anything. I think manuals are nice for Sunday afternoon cars but are way too impractical for daily drivers, especially in city traffic.

I don't mind manual transmissions, even in the city, honestly (the Jeep has one, I like that it 'forces' me to pay attention, among other things). I find (and this may be 'my' problem, more than anything else) that I tend to space out when driving automatics, or that I'm just bored and/or not involved (blame Adult ADD, I guess), even in urban traffic. I just prefer the involvement, and that most people can't borrow it because they aren't able to drive. Silly, I know.
Still, I may go for another Protege instead, IF I can find one reasonably priced (prices are all over the map) and equipped the way I want (not tan, green or white, with manual and at least in LX, preferably ES, trim).
Really? I assume you relied on board computer which most Max owners know is at least 3-4 mpg too generous. I've had a 2002 Max for over 5 yrs and have never gotten anywhere near 30 mpg - on board "maxed out" at 29 so figure 25-26 mpg at the most. Still, not bad for a 265 HP car but not anywhere near 30.
The on-board trip computer seemed accurate to me... I double-checked it a number of times. You don't say if you have the manual or automatic... I noticed when I put it in 6th it was practically idling.

I really like this car, the only reason I am getting rid of it is becuase I have a baby on the way in July, and a two door car will not cut it. I would like to know real world values, hint posting on this forum. I think KBB is kind of high, but I also think edmunds is kind of low. I know this car can be retailed at the dealership (I plan on getting a Toyota) so that should work in my favor. I would be suprised if it ended up at auction.
I was thinking more along the lines of a Crewmax Tundra, I miss having a truck. We are looking at the xB for the wife along with the Camry, Rav4, and Highlander (All use the 2.4, great little motor). She really doesn't need a new car, she has a 2003 4 door vehicle that is paid off, and will only be working 20 hours a week when the baby is born, but if we get a good deal, we will get her a car.

Accords typically aren't worth buying used until you get into the 7-8 year old models. You are much better off buying or leasing new.

Well, I saw a '98 Toyota Camry on Sunday for $6,995 ... and 248k miles.
Had to wonder if they were trying to sell it or if it was a marketing prop.

I ahve seen several ads in the NW Suburbs for 06 Altimas for $13k. I have NOT checked any of them out as that is larger than I am looking for.
I almost bought an 02 626 but the engine required premium AND teh check engine light went on.
