Trade in 2000 Saab 9-5 Base Wagon, Silver/Black(cloth), auto, premium sound, newer brakes, new tires, 66,000 miles. Condition is 'clean' there is one dent on the rear quarter wheel well and estimate to fix is $300. All maint is up to date, no accidents, etc.
Buy Used 2007 Mercedes R320CDI (silver/gray), as new, P1 package (parktronic, panorama roof, harmon-kardon sound, power lift gate, lighting package), full leather, lighting package. 5000 miles on it and super clean, as new. Asking $41,700.

What are you talking about? Auction prices are given here all the time. Auction price is a good place to start in determining price is it not? One can always add any dealer profit, CPO costs or reconditioning, if any, to the auction price.
The problem is, how much to add? I sure don't know what to add in dollars on a CPO car, and neither do you. All you will end up doing is frustrating yourself.

I've read from others a buyer shouldn't concern themselves with what a dealer has in a car. But, if I'm buying I'd want to know 2 things: 1) how much the dealership paid for "just" the car and 2) market price for the car. I can probably guesstimate the other trivial add ons with very little frustration.
Is it? Didn't know that. All I remember is a very annoying vibration on clutch engagement. They never did get it fixed for him. My guess was bad flywheel.
most volvo sticks are pretty rare, I think. maybe a bit less so with the more recent Rs (not to be confused with the old Rs, which were quite lame in comparison).
i just went through a vibrating clutch issue with my Honda. They didn't find the problem either, but now it has "resolved itself." Still doesn't feel like it did before the problem, but it almost feels a bit better. I just hope it isn't permanently damaged ... at least not in a way that will manifest before my lease is up.

A friend was wondering what kind of price he could get trading in his Nissan. It's a Sentra SE-R Spec V 6 speed manual. He lives in the northwest suburbs by Chicago. I am about to purchase a mazda 3 but the dealer i am working with claims that dealers don't use kbb for trade in value but that they use galves.com, never heard of galves and they were a good %50 lower in trade in value. ANy body know how i can get him to use kbb or get around this galves value which seems only to benefit the dealer not me. I am very concerned...
KBB is too high for a dealer to use it. KBB is good when they want to SELL you a car, not buy one from you. KBB is pretty up front about their pricing, stating that it is based on dealer asking prices, not realized prices like at an auction. Given that they use mathematical formulas, it makes sense that if the retail price KBB shows is an asking price, then the formula used to calculate trade-in (percentage of retail) will be too high.
A dealer will not use KBB to offer you a trade-in. You can just forget it, it's not going to happen.
Of course, you can refuse it, you can shop around, you can ask for more.
No price guide is gospel. They are all "ballpark".
If you want "gospel", go to auction prices--this is REAL money spent on REAL cars.
If a dealer checks auction prices and sees say 25 results for your car in the $8K-9.5K range, he certainly isn't going to offer you a KBB price of $11K.
There are RARE cases where trade-in might match KBB I think (back me up you car guys)...when the car is really "hot" in the market and when yours is a perfect or desirable example of same AND the weather is right and the geography is right. The stars would have to all align perfectly.

2006 Scion XA 17,300 miles Auto PW, PD Floor Mats, Cargo Mat Pioneer/Toyota MP3 CD stereo, 6 speaker. Clean but not outstanding. Black, not to many visible marks like dark colors normally show. No mechanical issues or wrecks. New tires. Recent full safety inspection, part of 15,000 mile service.
She has another kid on the way and needs something larger. Wants to trade but I am sure she is upside down a bit, owes $15,825. Has 100K Toyota transferrable warranty if she does private party sale, will get around $500 back if she cancels it.

Depending on the values I may want to buy it for myself as these are almost impossible to find used around here. Car is currently in Cleveland area, but could be traded in as far west a Fort Wayne, IN.
It is a hard one to pick a number on because there are so few on dealer lots around here. All with asking prices of $14,000 to $16,000 for the CPO ones. Kind of like the Toyota Yaris, can't find many of them used.
I don't know the original deal details though. I do know she has the extended warranty to 100K and GAP insurance. GAP usually runs around $4-600. I will have to have he see if there would be any GAP refund also.
I am hoping somone might have recent auction reports for the car to get a better idea on value.
Hmmm...let me check the San Francisco Toyota dealer asking price, which is usually laughably high anyway....stay tuned...

They have a very low miles 2006 xA loaded, asking $15488, which I'm sure you could get for $14.5K no problem.
A local dealer near me has a 2006 xA with 16,000 miles for asking price of $13,288.
As for trade, Toyota of San Francisco offered me $8000 on my 2006 xA a few months ago, and another local Toyota store offered to buy me outright for $8,500.
This exact car, down to the color, was sold by a Japanese colleague here at work. One year old but an '06, 17k, automatic. The dealer had offered him something ugly like $8,500 and he sold it privately, in ten minutes I might add, through the lab's bulletin board. And we only have 200 employees or so, so maybe it was just lucky.
That was about the middle range of auction prices at the time -- say, six weeks ago.
I almost bought it myself, except I hate an auto in a small car.
$15,800 owed is as idiotic as it is hopeless. Only cash will cure this problem.

Well, since the fender was replaced, that means that the VIN sticker is missing from the replacement fender. Sure fire sign that the car has been in an accident.
Unmolested, the car is probably an $11-12,000 car. W/ a replacement fender(what about the Carfax) and obvious bodywork, its probably a $9-10,000 car.
Even if they don't deal on Shifty's $15.4k price, and she paid way too much for the warranty, let's call it $1600 (*), that's a total of $17k. Add taxes and watever else, did she buy the undercoating?
For an 06 that balance still seems high.
2 years in to even a 6 year loan, and that $17k should be down well below $15,800.

At least the maintenance is covered for a couple more years. And she should not have any problems that are not covered by her warranty until it is paid off. 15K per year roughly x 7 years should be no problem for a Toyota, should it?
She just will be responsible for non-covered maintenance after 36K, and the car payment. Plus at an average of 36MPG she does not pay much for gas compared with most any other larger vehicle.

well, while I can't help you with the price, I can tell you that your ad doesn't work for me.
When people do things like paint their calipers, add stickers, CAI, etc, etc.... then say "lady driven. never tracked." I get a queasy feeling. I would at least drop the "lady driven" part because it isn't a selling point when considering the mods. It just tells me that the lady is a bit of a car person and probably drove it like a sportscar should be driven.
Oh, and I'd also probably drop the part about the top being replaced. That tells me it has seen the outdoors more than the 34k miles would dictate. Just a thought.

$13K is a dealer retail price. You could buy boatloads of 2006 xAs for that. No, not a rip-off by any means, but it's like going to a dealer and paying what he asks without bargaining. I'd say $13K with warranty, etc won't hurt you. If you rack up $1,000 in warranty repairs, then you're about even up on the deal.

Retail asking price on that car is about $12,999, fair market value I think is about $10,900--$11,750 IMO.

What are the odds of getting the same numbers in spring assuming I just tack on a few hundred more miles (Well, the reality is, I really don't expect to clock more than 500 miles over the next 5 months, considering the car has barely been run 2k miles so far in 2007).

When people do things like paint their calipers, add stickers, CAI, etc, etc.... then say "lady driven. never tracked." I get a queasy feeling. I would at least drop the "lady driven" part because it isn't a selling point when considering the mods. It just tells me that the lady is a bit of a car person and probably drove it like a sportscar should be driven.
Oh, and I'd also probably drop the part about the top being replaced. That tells me it has seen the outdoors more than the 34k miles would dictate. Just a thought.

Thanks for the input. Yes, I will seriously consider dropping the lady driven part. The reason I mentioned the top was because it is a known issue that the tops can go bad.
