Trade in value is probably closer to $15.
However, you are suffering from bad timing.
Personally, I'd put the car away until Spring, and then look to sell it privately.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
According to Manheim, you are probably trading @ $20,000
  • traindrivertraindriver Member Posts: 328
Thanks for the info. I am much worse off than I could have ever imagined. Looks like we are stuck with the POS for another 22 mos.

  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
    The miles kill you.
    Its prob a $5000 car.
  • justwatchingjustwatching Member Posts: 11
Yup...that's what I thought. One more question. I keep it another 4 months and put another 4,000 miles on it do you think i'll get much less than that?

    Thanks again for your help!
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
    Hard to say.
People don't like buying a car,esp a domestic one, with over 100k on it.
    Could drop $1000 or more.
  • graylinergrayliner Member Posts: 39
I posted for $11,900 and got $11,500 from the first guy to come see it after 3 days of no-shows. It had 78,630 miles and he felt it was in great shape, well cared for.
Tires were 90% and looked strong. I think the professional detail job helped a lot, fwiw.

    KBB value, good = $10,870 / excellent = $11,615
It was at the high end of good. The pacific northwest may be a stronger market for trucks, especialy 4WD trucks (but mine was not).

Saw the new owner twice an he's realy happy with the Tundra. Win-win.

    Thanks yet again folks!
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
Good work, you got a strong price. And you're right, detailing helps a lot--that' probably where the extra $500 --$1,000 came from.

Can anyone tell me what a real world trade in value would be for a
2006 Pilot EX-L AWD with DVD
    Light blue with 25k miles
    Excellent condition.

This car is in Pittsburgh, PA

Looking to trade on a Volvo XC90 (probably 2004).

    Thanks!

I'm with vmax. Dump it now! 100k is a magic threshold that hurts the value. So if you are on the verge, just do it and get it over with.

Ok, hit me one more time on this one (very likely the last time, because its probably going to get shipped out).

    2004 Chevrolet Malibu Maxx LS
    1SB package (side airbags)
    5 Door/Hatch
    3.5L
    29400 miles
New brakes, tires are still decent
    Some scratches, nothing major

Got a CarMax appraisal in early Sept for $9500, when it had about 27.9k mileage.

How much less am I looking at now? Any tips/strategies for getting CarMax to go close to that?

Should I even bother letting a Honda dealer look at it on a trade?

I'm ready to unload it in favor of a new '07 Odyssey, which is an absolute steal right now. (mid $25's for an EX-L with a $32 sticker).

    Thanks so much.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Trade in should be @ $23-24,000
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
Today, the car is worth somewhere between $8-8500.
Carmax will do whatever is in their best interest.
Sometimes they pay more than market value, sometimes they don't.

hmmmm... that makes the unsold brand new '06 sitting at my local dealer even more tempting. Its an RT AWD loaded with a whopping 20 miles on the odometer. They are advertising it for $21,995. I've been keeping an eye on it for about 8 or 9 months now and watching it drop every couple of weeks.

    I love CarMax.

They offered $9000 even for the Malibu.

Its all theirs, this week. I don't think I'm even going to bother with the Honda dealer on trade---there is no tax advantage in VA.

But my God...I'd never guy a car there...they've got an 07 Ody EXL with 11k miles, no RES, no NAV, sitting on their lot for 28998...I'm close to buying a new one for under 26k.

BTW--the Camry Hybrid's a great car. (That's my daily driver). I disagree on the passing acceleration...its actually quite good. Runs a 7.7 to 60. Once you've driven it for a few days, you're totally used to it. Its faster than a 4 cyl Camry and whisper quiet. And, interestingly, the most reliable of the three '07 Camry models (4 cyl, 6, hybrid). Dealers never see them for service.

Well, thats why Carmax pays so much for trades.
Personally, I don't know how they stay in business.
this kind of nonsense did in the Auto Nation used car superstores.
  • kyfdxkyfdx Moderator Posts: 265,574
The Autonation used car superstore went out of business pretty quick here... after dropping millions on real estate/development.. A local car dealer bought the property and had a used car lot for a little while..

Now.. he just sold it to CarMax.. We should have one here by next fall... Closest one was 2 hours in any direction before this.

Is that going to be good or bad for the existing used car market?

I could actually see it being good from a dealer standpoint, because prices may get driven up. On the other hand, it might force consumers away from the traditional 'haggling' dealerships.

I may try to get a Honda dealer to beat that price, though I doubt I'll have any success---only reason why is if they use it as a way to sweeten the pot for my overall deal.
  • jprocjproc Member Posts: 135
Thx.I'll try and sell it privately for 6,500 or so
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Agreed on the Ody. Prices are $2300 lower than they were in May when I was actively shopping.

I bought a Sienna because Odys were not as good a value at the time.

Hard to say... Doubtful that one used car store in a market the size of Cincinnati can make much of a difference..

But, if they pay top dollar for trades, that is a good thing... I buy/lease mostly new cars... so, if I can sell my car to them at a high price, then make a good deal on a new one, elsewhere.... then, I'm happy. :)

I doubt that Carmax is going to have a real impact on U/C prices.

Car buyers by and large prefer traditional "haggling" dealers, believing that they will get their best deals in those dealerships.

Carmax works best for those consumers who dislike or fear traditional dealerships and don't mind paying more for the peace of mind of dealing with a 1 price dealer.

I don't know how it is elsewhere but when Carmax opened in Columbus they put their 2 stores in the high growth - high end areas of town where, seemingly, customers would be the most educated.

Don't know how they're doing but high prices/knowledgeable consumers strikes me as a strange strategy.
  • jlawrence01jlawrence01 Member Posts: 1,757
Carmax paying top dollar for used cars ... that has NOT been my experience in Chicago. I have gotten more by sending them to Manheim.
  • kyfdxkyfdx Moderator Posts: 265,574
Yeah.. it seems to be a real mixed bag, depending on location...

It seems that the N.E. CarMaxes give better offers, relative to regular dealerships... Maybe because NE dealers use Galves?

We'll just have to wait and see!

My brother in Cincinnati and I always operate under one theory. In general, we'll look at the Carmax price for a USED CAR and figure that we can find a car for $1500-2000 LESS by negotiating at a new car dealership.

Don't get me wrong. I think their business model is great but WOW, if I had to pay those prices.

NE carmaxes give silly numbers I don't see how they stay in business.

We put a number of 39,000 dollars on a 10,000 mile BMW 335CI hard top convertible. Only option was automatic trans.

Carmax said they would pay 47,000 dollars for it. :surprise:

Please advise trade in value on this vehicle. I have a DV claim that I'm nearing settlement. How much did I lose when driving new off the lot? How much did I lose once car was in accident. Clean carfax but sure dealers will recognize damage. ... sigh again

    Location: Maryland
    Year/Make/Model: 2007 Acura TL-Sport
    Body Style: 4 Door
    Engine: 3.5L V6/AUTO 5SPD
    Driveline: FWD
    Mileage: Approx 2500
    Color: Black/Black Interior
Condition: 1 small scratch on interior of leather door
    Tires - 90 % worn
    Brakes - Excellent
    Maintenance
Other: Front end collision on driver's side causing approx $12K in damage. Car was fixed and in "like new condition" (structural damage of course) ... sigh

    Thanks for the help
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
IF this is a Type S, unmolested it would be worth somwhere around $30,000

    W/ 12k worth of damage, prob @ $20,000, maybe a little more.

If I were you, I would have your local Acura dealer give you an appraisal of the car.

Just curious--if it was repaired well, at a really good body shop, clean carfax, what might it be worth private sale?

Just curious--if it was repaired well, at a really good body shop, clean carfax, what might it be worth private sale?

IMO, if the work is done by the Acura dealer (perfect work) and clean carfax, I think the gap between no accident and w/ accident should be closer...but this is just my opinion...plus I never had this much damages on my car, the most I had was around 7K damages.

I think it's better just trade it in. The problem is (s)he just needs to find a dealer that is willing to take it in.

kenyuana, Regard to DV? Is Maryland one of the state required insurance to pay DV? If not, did you sue them in order to make them pay you DV?

    FYI,
The dealer offered me $9400....vs. KBB's trade value of $13,400, Edmund's $13K, and your $12-13K....needless to say, we walked away. Maybe we'll try CarMax and see if they can do any better.

I wonder what good the KBB, Edmunds, etc. sites are in giving trade-in values....when it's clear that the dealers are low-balling so badly. All of the research I did indicated this car was worth $12-13K, so we were really surprised to get such a dramatically different offer (even after having been through the trade-in process many times before). I feel like none of the information online is of any use to me. The salesman's explanation was, it has to be priced to go to auction in case they can't sell it, so that's why it's so low. The condition of the car was immaterial to them, as were the extras like the chrome wheels.

Anyway, not your fault, I always appreciate the assistance I get here, but I thought I'd share my experience.

We are ready to purchase a new minivan (3rd child on the way), but we have an 03 MDX that we are trying to trade-in or sell perhaps to Carmax.

03 MDX Touring, 62.6K miles, white, side steps, it does not have NAVI or RES
IT's very clean, inside and out, with just the normal wear associated with a 4 year old vehicle.

The dealer yesterday offered $13.5K even using the black book value, this seemed to be on the low end.

    Any advice????????

    Help!

    Thanks in advance
