Terry and Bill, can you give me a Southern NJ trade-in value on this one:
1996 Dodge Intrepid ES, leather, premium sound, autostick, moonroof, traction control. Car has 70,000 miles, tires good, black paint so-so, no dings, some minor scratches, exterior plastic losing its color.
This car will probably be traded at a Japanese new car dealership.
Whew, thanks. Feel free to let me know if I'm about to make a mistake though. :-)
Funny you should mention NADA. That's what the salesman pulled out to convince me of the value of the '98 LS400. I asked him if that was what he used to appraise trade-ins, or if he used the Black Book. To his credit, he answered honestly and said they used the Black Book.
Didn't you sell Lexus at one time? What's your take on the auto leveling suspension? From what I've read here, they seem to go out about every 100k miles, and cost $2-3k to fix. I realize this is off topic, so let me know if I should email you instead.
thel, my ex-wife owned an '85 CRX when it was new. Fun car, but it did later appear on a list of "The 10 Most Un-safe cars (in a crash)" (don't know how important safety is to you).
And personally, I'd never buy a used car w/o getting the title at the same time (& check it for Salvage, or Mileage Unknown status).
It is red with 93,000 miles. 5-spd, cassette, appears to be in good shape. Ran a carfax as per advice of gurus and the only report was a police report indicating a collision with a parked vehicle (doesn't say which has the hitter/hitee). No salvaged titles, etc. The car was bought by a dealer in Jefferson City MO at auction in St. Louis. Dealer has it advertised as a 1993 for $3,995 (carfax report said it was a 1994).
My 78yr old mom wants to sell her 94 V6LX Mazda 626...cloth, auto, gold (color), very clean, never wrecked but a few door and bumper dings, 21k miles, and 18 month old Goodyear Eagles (the original tires were kinda falling apart). I took it to the orginal dealer last year where she bought it new, told them to check it over and do whatever they thought it needed. They changed the oil and gave her a free car wash....no kidding....and said the car didn't need a thing. It's never been in the shop for anything but oil changes (twice a year) and still runs great (does Mazda still make cars this good?). She wants to get rid of it before she starts having trouble....lol! I've not got a clue what it's worth...private sale, naturally. She would never trade as long as there's a 100 bucks on the table.
We are trying to trade in our car for a 2002 Subaru Outback. Here's the rundown: 2000 Saturn SL2, AT, Dark Green, 26,200 miles. Power windows/doors/locks. Cruise. Alloy Wheels. Radio/CD/Cass. Security. NADA values trade in for car at 10,000 even, which is what we are hoping to get in trade. Are we way off base? The salesman keeps giving us this "Well, the wholesale value is only X" line. Is 10k too much to hope for on a trade-in? It seems in line with Blue Book and NADA but I am not familiar with the Black Book listing.
This is in Central MA, btw (up near NH). Any help would be appreciated.
Okay, my Volvo's going on the block. I'm finally breaking down and shopping A6 quattros...
So, we've got a "clean," not pristine (two small dings, a really small rub on the left front bumper cover), '96 854 (850 sedan) turbo, 72k, factory sport suspension, every option available (literally), brand new Yoko AVSs, some IPD goodies (that prolly don't help the value?), clean CarFax report, and every single receipt since new.
The Audi dealer quoted me... $5k... please tell me he's smoking something and tell me what so that I can have as much fun. I'm tempted to actually sell the car myself.
I guess they're kinda cool, but they're basically (no, TOTALLY), an OLD Civic with...two fewer seats. I don't understand how or why anyone is getting $2-3k out of an 13-year-old rusty Honda with two doors, crank windows and a stick. This is a classic example of Honda deification in the used market, it's insane.
Then again, I'm addicted to old Saab 900s, so there's no accounting for taste.
terry and bill: Thanks for the '96 Intrepid info. I appreciate it. Painful as it is. Now at least my brother will not think he is being low-balled, even though he is upside-down.
Thanks for the honest info Bill. If I was looking for a sugar-coated response, I could have gone back to the dealer, right? I think we're going to try and sell it privately, but having little luck so far since it is snowing outside and Saturn's w/out Anti-lock brakes are not in much demand up here.
Oh, it's the color then. Muave ext. with an orange and pink leather interior and a brown shag headliner. I thought that was *the* combo for trade-in values... And here I thought the 21" gansta rims, hydraulics and 3ft high rear spoiler were the finishing touches! Actually, it *is* green/blue metallic w/tan leather...which I didn't think was the death-toll for trade-in value.
Bret, I've been wanting an A6 (S6, drool) for a long, long, time and the itch is getting to me. Besides, I'm more of a Saab loyalist than a Brick loyalist anyways, but Saab doesn't make anything w/ awd right now. So...I'd still be staying on the "continent," and I'm looking at a really super '01 A6 2.7T, black-on-black, and you know me and my turbos.
Sold my 01 Sienna rather effortlessly today. Actual sales price was $26,950. 700 over NADA trade. Shame it depreciated so much but Toyota had 0% or 1,000 rebate in my area on 02's. Paid 32k new (36 sticker). Good deal for all. INKY
I hear ya :-) I looked long and hard at an A6 before my 9-5. At 6'4", I didn't fit behind the wheels as comfy as I would like so the 9-5 is in my garage. I've really grown to like the car but if someone dangles a nice T5R in front of me, I'd be hard pressed not to bite.
Your car sounds very nice and I'm sure you'll get what you want out if it. I was just looking in last week's Auto Trader from Orange County, CA and prices for 854's are from low 7's to mid 10's depending on mileage.
FWIW, SAAB has AWD on their radar for the next iteration of the 9-5; '03-'04 timeframe. I had a long conversation with a mktg mgr from SAAB N.A. and he admitted they missed the boat on AWD demand. The current 9-5 won't support AWD but the next one will. New 9-3 first, new 9-5 later is the product plan.
Keep all your ABBA-listening buds in the loop as to what you decide.
Remember that 2000 Topaz XJ8 with 13k miles, which they wanted $47.5k for? They called over the weekend. Said business was slow, and they'd take $39.9 for it. Wow! That's quite a discount eh?
I have a 2000 Grand Caravan SE company vehicle. It is a corporate lease deal and the lease is up in January. It will have 75,000 miles by then, and I am told I can buy it for $7700. I am thinking of buying it, then reselling it. It is in great shape and has been babied. It has a few options...data center, rear heat and air, 5 doors. WHat do you think?
I expect the van would be perfect for someone wanting a recent model in good shape, with only highway miles on it. I was going to buy it for my wife, but opted to get a 2002 company van. I really like the looks of the new caravans over the 2000 models.
It has been a great vehicle. Sticker was over $26,000. I plan to sell it in the local paper.
.... If a vehicle is xtra clean and xtra nice and of course, you own it for a figure that is "way back" of market value .... You can drop it in a paper, like this Caravan for let's say $9,900 ... and probably get a lot of calls. There is a market of folks that would love to spend $29,000 on a Van, but only have X amount.
But, it better look like new, be knee deep in rubber, have all the service records and look like it has 27,000 miles...
Not an exciting one. My Dad wants to sell this vehicle to a friend's son and just wants a fair number on it. He knows it's not worth a whole lot:
92 Dodge Caravan Base Model Short Body 6 cyl - 3 sp Auto A/C, Cruise, crank windows 92,000 Dark Blue Hood and Roof resprayed due to high quality ChryCo paint process Well Maintained - good tires.
Thanks in advance.
Also, he is interested in getting either a used ML320 or new CRV. He's not the MB type but is thinking of treating himself. He deserves it but thinks it might be obstentatious (and he's cheap). He's hoping to never have to buy another car again. What do you guys think?
.... If it's clean, everything works, tires are good, wiper blades are ok, brakes are fine, air works ...etc, etc.. it's probably worth $1,500.
If Dad is on the hunt for a SUV, that's a huge market ... the MB's are ok, ugly but ok, for the money the ..CRV's are super, he may want to look at a pre-owned Escape or a Sante Fe, Toyota Highlanders are nice, and you can find them used now, I just bought one at auction.
That's an item, that your Dad should spend some "real time" to go out and drive -- they are all different in looks, and the way they drive .... SUV's are really personnel taste.
The best thing he could do for himself is , make a short list of 5/6 whatever, and spend a day or two and go to the different dealers --- and get the Feel, touch and smell of em' ..and make sure he drives each one for at least an Hr. or so, with no salesperson ....
...for the info on the Caravan. I'll pass that along.
Dad is recently retired and has always wanted an MB but loves his Honda Accord (and a prior Civic) so the CRV really is enticing him. He and Mom really don't need a sport ute but want something higher/taller than the Accord (easier to get into). We just want them in something safe, reliable, and cost reasonable to own. The CRV seems to fit the bill and is a great value IMHO.
On another board where I post, someone made the claim that an identically equipped Mazda Tribute will be worth more than a Ford Escape. What do you gentlemen think?
For the sake of this discussion, let us pretend that the two vehicles are equipped as identically as they can be. The mileage is the same; the condition of the vehicles is the same; and, the color of the vehicles is the same.
I say male buffalo chips! Is there anyone out there that still doesn't understand the ford/mazda suv relationship?
On another note, there is a seems to be a "behind the times" crowd which always assumes that a foreign brand is superior to an American name. They seem to associate foreign with refined. These people will gladly pay more for the Mazda.
...... JP makes a great point..! Hey, look at the Passport, Honda pulled that of quite well ..no matter what you put on the front our back --- It's still a Isuzu, but don't tell that to a Honda buyer, you will get slapped..l.o.l.
There is some minor changes, have him take a look, and if he like's the Mazda better ... then he likes the Mazda. And he could be right, maybe in 2/3 years the Tribune could be worth 3/4/$500 more.. I don't know.
This guy is not in the market for either the Escape or the Tribute. It was just a discussion that we got into.
He also states that the Tributes are of higher quality than the Escapes and claims that there is a place in the assembly line where the Tribute splits off and undergoes more quality control.
FWIW, yes, I know that the Mazda is basically the Ford and they are both built at the same plant. In fact, I live in the area where they are built.
....... They are as close as the Toyota Corolla and , the Chevy Prizm... a little popcorn here and there, Toyota stereo vs the Delco, battery's are different, interior cloth quality is "about" the same ... stuff like that.
I sat in my boss's 1993 S320 today(101,000 miles). It quite possibly had the most comfortable seats and air tight cabin I have ever experienced. I found a local 1986 SEL 560 with 38,000 one owner miles(all books and documentation). What are your individual experiences with the 560 versus the 420 V-8? I want a big MB for a 2nd car, for safety and a few other reasons.

Bill - I know. That's why I said there was no substitute for your experience. :-)

And it's got all the bells and whistle's ... I think I'm lookin' at a $3,500 vehicle ...
Terry.
lol.. Yeah, those can be dangerous in the hands of the unknowing.
My favorite is when people are lookng at NADA books at a sale.. LOLOLOLOL
Bill
But needs paint, and its got some miles.. and its a Dodge.
$3,000-3,500.

Just my 2 cents; Good luck!
I'm already getting calls from his wife and family ...

Yeah, avoi the S/L suspension. It can be troublesome as the car ages. And is godawful expensive to fix.
Bill
I'd start em at $2,800 and go from there.
Bill
Put it in the paper for $6,950 and see what happens says Bill.
I mean, shoot..21K? That's Oogotz.
I think its a $5K wholesale piece of its super nice (Have it de-dinged and detailed first). Heck, consider $100 or so to re-shoot the bumper.
Bill
You not gonna like me. See where it says "Avg Trade-In" on the NADA website?
OK. Take a big magic marker and markthe part of your monitor where it says that so you cant see it. This way you wont be confused again
Why they put those numbers there is beyond me. They are beyond wacko. Them and VMR are the dummies In my experience.
OK. On to the Saturn.
$7,500-8,000 is what they are doing like yours all day long with cloth.
I actually looked this one up carefully. I saw exactly two that have broken $10K.
A 9,000 mile gold one in CA and a 12,000 mile White one in Denver. Both were around $10K even. Me assumes they musta had leather.
Sorry man
Where they hitting you at now? Also, where ya at on the new car?
Bill

Too bad yer not in FLorida.. I'd give ya $5,500..
Seriously, he's quite probably smoking some very potent weed, perhaps.. Nah. Something stronger. At $5,000 he's on Angel Dust.
Wait, was it Pink with Purple leather?
Brown with Green Leather?
Assuming its a weakish color..Like Emerald Green over Oak..
At least $7,500. I think its an $8,000 car wholesale, $10,500/best offer in the paper. I get $10-11K for those retail all day long.
Bill
Then again, I'm addicted to old Saab 900s, so there's no accounting for taste.

Thanks Gentlemen!
I could easily see $5,500 across the block if this thing is like new.
Plus.. sheesh.. it has NO miles at all on it.
If that's what your friend wants (Instead of finding a 50K mile Altima GXE or a nice 93 XJ6 like I would do) then they oughta write the check IMO.
