Sliver, Automatic, 26K miles, Sunroof, heated seats, side airbags, premium 6 disc changer/subwoofer/tweeter kit. SF Bay Area.
Basically every option except leather. Condition is great ... I wax it 1X month, no crash damage. The only problems: Tires are original, and will need replacing within 10K, and two small door dings.
Thinking of trading it in on an outback 6 cyl ...
What could I expect for it?
Wait, we're in Mid-Michigan, so that should be "I haven't drove it yet."
Anyway, it's sitting at the local Olds/Nissan dealer looking for a home, they've got an ad in the paper for $9995. Assuming it's clean, non-smoker, no body damage etc., what is it worth at auction/retail?
Couldn't read the odometer, so say 70k? and with 110k? That'll give the range.
BTW, the Subaru Legacy L wagon w/ 101k that Bill hit at $6k+ retail sold in less than a week. Local Subaru dealer had it in the paper for $8k... yow.
Thanks in advance

Then, "the guy" comes over & shows me the price they'll give me for my '98 Range Rover 4.6, 34K miles: $28,000. Hmmmmmm.....
Then, they lower the price of the Bimmer to $34K after a little minor negotiating on my part. By that time it's 4:45 pm on Dec. 29th. AND I only have to pay sales tax on the difference. MAYBE I left a few hundred $$$ on the table?? But they were so laid back about it all; I felt like, just take a really good deal when it's just kind of handed to you, Duh.
It all seemed too easy, somehow! I ran a carfax on the Bimmer & it came up clean. Do you think I should take the BMW to a body shop to have it checked for any body work or paint problems? There are stories of BMW's being damaged in shipping, or with funky paint. But to my eye the black paint & body looked PERFECT.
Thanks to you both! And Happy New Year.
Woody
Are your estimates on trade in based on west coast or east coast? What state are you in? Do you see much deviation between west vs. east trade in values?
Thanks,
JOFO
Well, my list is all over the place... But here's my picks: 99 clean Acura TL, 2000 Honda Accord EX V6 4dr, 2001 Subaru Outback LTD AWD (I like these, they are great in lot's of rain and snow), 2000 Passat GLS V6, 2000 Volvo V70 SE, 2001 Dodge Intrepid R/T (great road cars).
I'm really not the guy to ask for SUV's, even though I'm driving one now. But, for $20 grand I would be driving the 2001 Ford/Mazda Escape or a 2001 Suzuki XL-7 (lot's of bang for the buck..and they look good) ....
So... shoot me later.
Terry.
As a rule, there isn't a whole lot of difference. But, some vehicles like the Boxsters and the Audi TT's get some EEEXXXtreme monies out on the "Left coast" ... but so do SAAB s. (CA is a funny place anyway)
I watch the Auction reports from LA. San Diego, Phoniex, Denver and Dallas -- I have friends that work with "Big Red McCone" and Longo Toyota and the old John Elway stores, and we "car talk" about 5/6 times a month --- So we kinda keep up with whats happening ... right now, I'm in Pa, I just was in FL for 5 days ( still kinda my residence)
Terry.
Good job...! ... I just had a feeling they could "see" things your way .....
Hey, I'm very happy for you ... and if it makes you feel better, drop it by the shop and have them take a look.. all the history is right on the BMW service link.
You are going to be lookin' pretty sporty, on New Years Eve drivin' that ..slick new Car ..!
I'm glad I could help ...
Terry.
Terry.
Ok, let's see .. it's a 4WD, that's a winner..Stick ..no help there.
70k it's worth "around" $8ish, and with the heavy klick program going for it ..it's worth "around" $5/$6ish ...
It doesn't surprise me a bit on the Subaru, if you think it got big money there, you should see what they do in Alaska...(ouch)
Terry.
This one has aalll the stuff ... but the miles are a little on the stiff side, so I'm thinkin' low $17's ....(real money)
I hope this helps ...
Terry.
Happy New Year to you, and thanks again.
Same to Bill, too.
Rather slim pickings today, but here goes.
1998 Subaru Impreza Outback Sport, 4dr, AWD, auto, 40K, $10,995
1993 Subaru Legacy AWD, 4dr, Sedan, auto, no miles listed in the ad, $4995
Also, just down the road from us there is a 1988 Subaru Loyale wagon, 196K on it, 5-speed, in ok shape, some repaired body damage, new paint, 4WD, and they want $3000 for it!!!
Just a sample of the crazy Alaska prices.
I like the looks of the Land Rover much better, but think safety/reliability would be better with the Benz. Thoughts?
Incidentally Bill, I found a 2000 ML 320 at Luxury imports(18K miles, $30K asking) on Roberts BLVD. Anything I need to know?(SMW357mia@aol.com)
Thanks, Sam
2001 e430Sport with all options...10K miles....wht/java
2001 LS430 Ultra w/ 6K miles....blk/blk
2001 LS430 (w/ Nav) with 2500 miles...gold
2000 e430Spt w/ xenons/heated seats...40K miles...blk/parchment

and chiming in on some actual transactions (thru friends of mine) in the last month - 2000 S5 w/ 11K miles for $57K, 2000 e55 with 17K miles for $51K, '98 ML320 for $23K and 2001 RR 4.6HSE with 0 miles for $50,500.
Any ideas on a reasonable real-world trade value.
Thanks.
Ed
Although Bill, I really can't (in good conscience) suggest to my girlfriend that she buy a late-90s Jaguar XJ6/XJ8... :-)
(I have to do the repair work on our cars, and have 0 experience with Jags. And there's no Jag dealer in Reno, where we live.)
Terry, some of your choices are quite interesting, and things I wouldn't have thought of:
*99 clean Acura TL -- I'm driving an '02 TL-S, so I don't think she wants another one.
*2000 Honda Accord EX V6 4dr -- she likes these, but prefers the looks of the 2-dr coupe.
*2001 Subaru Outback LTD AWD (I like these, they are great in lot's of rain and snow) -- I suggested Subaru to her too, but she had an old 198x Subie GL wagon, and hated it, so this is out.
*2000 Passat GLS V6 -- yep, one to consider.
*2000 Volvo V70 SE -- really ? I didn't think these would be so inexpensive. We'll have to look.
*2001 Dodge Intrepid R/T (great road cars -- yes, but probably too big for her liking.
Thanks again guys !

Have one for you from a friend of mine. He has a 2001 Trans Am, Ram Air (WS6 package), auto, 22k miles, auto, t-tops, white with dark charcoal leather. He is near Knoxville. He is needing to unload it due to a new job (needs a 4 door business sedan now). What do you think on trade and on retail for this?
Thanks guys.
Rick
Planning to trade in the following:

New Tires/Brakes
A/C, Cruise, Tilt, Auto Transmission
Clean/No major accident
No rust/ only small dings left rear door.
Power windows/door locks/mirrors

Thanks in advance for your help.

Ed
Sounds like you did quite well.
Did you read my website on how to spot paintwork??
Hmm??
http://www.vauxhallpa.50megs.com/paintwork.html
Bill
2000 S70SE... Can be found for $20K. Plan on 30-35K miles.. but you can buy them for that retail all day long IMO.
Bill
But.. the Rovers arent that bad these days.. I'd drive both and get what ya like.
I dunno the guys you mentioned. Just do the usual due diligence.
Bill
Bill
If its PERFECT (Wouldnt recognize the inside of a Body Shop, never been dinged, etc.. and wouldnt recognize the smell of a smoldering Marlboro Light...)
$20K. But that may be a touch ofa push, but it could do it. $19,500 is where I hit it.
Bill
Figure $19-20K. Nice car but I think the miles smack it pretty good and proper.
That assumes that its' like the Theoretical Xterra above.
Bill
Its a $1,500 piece wholesale. However.. slap it in the paper for $2,950/bo..
And she'll sell.
Bill
1998 740iL w/ 60K miles...all options except nav...navarro/dk grey....good condition..semi-decent chrome wheels...

2000 e430Spt w/ xenons/heated seats...40K miles...blk/parchment

I have a dilemma on my hands. I have a convertible and as you might know it is winter here in Atlanta!
I am still faring pretty well on trade in amounts offered.
I have a 1997 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder (conv.) GS-Turbo, 5spd., 47.8K, no wreck, clean title, burgundy ext/with tan top (top is perfect since it has been garaged since new), tan leather int., every option including ABS.
So here are some questions in random order:
1. Would it hold true that a convertible would bring more money in South Florida or Florida at this time rather than in Atlanta or does that matter? If so what is black book clean on my car in FL? It is 11,200 here in GA beginning on Jan 1, I happened to get offered 11.5 for it by a honda dealer but after driving the Accord Coupe I decided I no longer wanted their car. Carmax has offered 10K.
2. I am looking to buy a 02 RSX coupe (non type S) manual, no leather, no dealer adds at this time is it feasible to try to get invoice? What do you suggest, I think Edmunds TMV may be off here a little since this car is seeing slugish sales.
3. So what do you think? ( I had an offer of 10,500 sight unseen from an Autobytel Acura Dealer but they were stuck on 19,400 for the RSX which I feel is too high, I would give up to about $400 over invoice on the RSX if I have to)
Thanks for taking the time to read this...
The real money on your vehicle is around $10ish (maybe), that's if, it's "jam up", it's a handshaker and you get no help there. ..and if Carmax has offered that, thats also a place you may want to buy at.. $11,200 may be clean book, but your vehicle would have to have about 25k, auto, puuurrrffect shape, new tires and be pearl white to pull that strong dollar...
Not to hurt anyones feelings, but before you drive to Miami ... I think you have been offered "all" the money at $10 -- the $11,500 is an -- over allowance, there is plenty of Mitsu's around and they are doing between $9,000 and $10 at all the auctions..... Sorry.
Good Luck ....
Terry.
Well the 740il is worth "around" $27/$28ish, that's if it's clean to the bone .. all the service records, knee deep in rubber and it needs -0- ..
The Benz is definitely the right color, toy's and miles .. probably around that $48/$49ish figure... depending on the options
The Lex is worth "around" that $44/$45 figure.. give or take a Gee whiz on the miles difference.
You don't get any help on the 40K on the Benz, only if you are buying it... it's about a $33/$34,000 vehicle.. and that's if it's like new and needs -0- ..
Just keep in mind, these are what they are doing at the auctions ... also keep in mind, that your in the "left coast" and things are a little different there ...
Good hunting ...
Terry.
Everyone likes em' til they go to trade em' ..
Terry.
Happy New Year..!
Right color, right miles ... and that's a great price..!
Terry.
I did not care for the Honda Accord and to put it bluntly even though they have offered the most on my car, they got down right dirty, with threats and things like that via email and I don't work that way!
Thanks again! I think I might be able to pull $11K out of someone, just gotta not be afraid to walk out!
The trade-in value has nothing to do with what kind of payment plan you intend on using to pay for the car. They are worked out separately, Anyone who has ever bought a car should know that.
I paid $20,500 out the door for the same car(bought it new with 4.9%APR) with dealer (Honda)cd player installed! Now I have 16000 miles on the car. In my opinion my Accord is as good as it was new except for these 16,000 miles on the odometer. The car doesn't show age at all & no visible sign of wear anywhere. (Not even tyres, I rotate every 7000 miles)
Thanks for the advice. Rick Case bumped up their trader offer to $25K(works out to $26.5K with tax savings) which is in the range you projected it.
I have a potential private buyer at $27.5K which would net me $1K over the trade.
Thanks again for you help.
Rob
Additionally, there are payment plans that are more beneficial to the dealer than others. Balloon payments especially help them stuff people in to cars that would normally be too expensive if one went with traditional financing. I don't care how you like to sugarcoat it ... you didn't get a blazing bargain on that Jetta. You didn't get the worst deal ever, but certainly not the best. You are going to end up paying over $20,000 over the length of the contract, and then you still owe several thousand more on the car.
You can turn the car into the dealer but you have to be within the mileage constraints and since you already have high miles for the amount of time you've had the car .. I don't think you are going to be within the mileage constraints the dealer will set on you.
You may think that buying 3 new cars in a 2 year period is an accomplishment and makes you an expert on the ins and outs of car buying but between me and my fiance we have bought 22 cars in the last 5 years and I have 3 years experience working at a car dealer which also means I have 3 years experience seeing people get stuffed into cars. And I can tell you most customers that come in to our dealer that are in a balloon payment are waaaay upside down and some of them don't even know that they are in a balloon contract.
Make sure it's nice and clean before you go car shopping, clean it up and throw a coat a wax on it ... (black ..? .. you live up north..?)
As fair as trade in money, you are lookin' around that $13,400/500/600 area ...
Relax and have fun...
Terry.
I am interested in 2001/2002 Maxima ... What is the going rate for the 2001 GLE (i.e fully loaded) with say 15k?
Thank you in advance
