The NAV unit operates the same parked or in motion. Route guidance can be entered by the touch screen or completely by voice commands. You can say the street name when setting a destination instead of spelling it out.
The voice commands controls the NAV unit plus A/C, radio, DVD, XM, etc. One of my favorite feature on it is that you can say "Find nearest ..." (So if you say Find nearest fastfood, then it shows you a list of near by McD, Wendy's, etc). The manual shows about 700 commands (but lots are repeats like Find nearest blah blah though) To me, the voice commands provide very convenient shortcuts while driving but I still perfer entering destinations by the touch screen.
Thanks Mike - very helpful. I'm glad to learn that Honda is putting the needs of consumers ahead of their internal legal counsel. We've decided to take the plunge and will pick up our '06 EX-L Nav/Res in a few days.
The only thing you may find less helpful with the Honda is that the NAV cannot be played on the front screen. Most vehicles with rear DVD and NAV have the ability to play the movie up front if the vehicle is in Park and parking brake set. This is nice for navigating menus for younger kids that can't run the remote. There are workaround though. You can hack the wires and put in a switch to run the DVD up front. Or you can rip/burn DVD's with nothing more than the feature film so when you insert the DVD it automatically plays. That's the biggest downfall of the DVD/NAV in my book.
I also think the POI's are more limited than my old Garmin 2610, but I've not met a factory NAV was better (in terms of POI's). The integration of the Honda NAV is top-notch though. Better than my wifes Lexus IMHO.
Does anyone know if for instance you were taking a road trip and an accident had the interstate closed, is the Nav system able to adapt in "real time" and are you able to instantly view alternate roads without it just programed to give you a standard route to your destination? I hope that made sense. Thanks in advance for your advice. I'm trying to determine if the Nav is worth the extra money and what are it's limitations.
Yes, the NAV can give you multiple options. I can't explain how as I've only used it a few times, but I remember it giving me a map with 3/4 different route highlighted. Quickest, most interstate, least interstate, etc. type selections.
The Nav also has a "Detour" feature which you can activate while driving as you approach a closed/congested road. The detour reroutes you around the road you are approaching. I have only used it locally, and what it does is it takes you to the next big intersection to connect you back to the original route.
So I assume on a closed highway, it will probably reroute you to the next ramp, and if the road is still closed, you will have to just do another detour again and again until you reach the section of the highway that is open...
I have a 2 month old 2006 odyssey with NAV and i noticed that my navigation system lets me input the 4 digit code before i run the system it happened twice now but i did not disconnect the battery or what so ever. Is this normal help.
I am in the market for a new Ody w/nav and was wondering if anyone has traveled with a Thule box or similar item? It looks like a Thule could cover the GPS antenna and effect its accuracy. Is this a problem?
Is it possible to “teach” the system a preferred route?
For example, you embark on a trip to a specific destination address. You begin to follow the systems route but you periodically change the path along the way to match a slightly different and preferred route.
Upon reaching your destination, you add the destination to the address book.
Will the system remember your alterations and take you on your favorite route the next time you target that address or will revert back to mapping a route the system prefers?
Hi, I recently purchased a '06 EX-L w/ DVD/NAV.Unfortunately, the Nav does not show a new highway that has been open for about a year where I live (the sys stops where the old highway was and keeps doing a search-like its lost). Does anybody know how to update the system or are there periodic updates where new construction is added to the Nav map or is there a way to manually enter the new highway to the Nav sys? Just curious.
You should have the most recent NAV disc, released in the fall of last year. The problem is, a year is a long time when it comes to map development. I'm sure it will show up on a later NAV release, maybe the next one.
Yeah, it takes awhile. We purchased a new '05 Pilot with nav in January 2005. The dealer had moved to their new location 13 months earlier in December 2003. You guessed it - the nav still showed their old location.
Is there any way to enter Latitude/Longitude to define a destination with the Ody Nav? Can't find it in the manual. It would make our hobby of geocashing even more fun. Haven't heard of geocashing? Check out www.geocashing.com.
Also, I never heard if anyone has traveled with a storage box on top of the van which might cover/block a portion of the GPS antenna and how it effected the NAV's accuracy.
I would presume that all you'd have to do is get the map disk for the area you will be moving to and make sure you are hitting the correct satellite. But don't quote me on that.
I have got Honda Ody 2002 with no disk - bought at the dealer's auction. I don't want to spend too much on the current version but figured that somebody who upgraded from 2.11c up might want to sell his old one. Also, does anybody know how to change time? Time on my NAV is 4 hours off. Is it even possible without a NAV disk? Thanks!
After reading all 582 messages in this forum I had a couple of questions.
1. I read that the Map data only covers some major cites and highways/routes in small towns. It also sounds like it depends on the small town to how much data is available. I am moving to TX and saw that South Paudra island is on the list. Is Corpus Christi included in that map data? That is where I will be using it along with driving to San Antonio TX. Anyone use it in those areas?
2. After market Nav systems. I understand that the Nav system costs about 2K. I was looking at the AVIC-N3 In-Dash DVD Multimedia AV Navigation Receiver
It has a couple other items that I was interested in, like XM radio, Teles Map data that is update able, and it has an Ipod direct access hook-up. Question is if it is installed by a professional does it void any of the Honda warranties? As understand it has a better us a speed because the unit needs to be hooked up to the speedometer.
Thanks for all the insight to the Honda ODy w/ Nav and I can't wait to purchase one.
I'm hardly an expert on this (typically I don't use the nav for going anywhere except the first time) but haven't seen any such indication with my '05 Odyssey.
The system does allow you to pick a preferred type of route (e.g., maximize freeways).
We have the NAV and it covers all of north american quite well. Small towns/rural areas are covered, some very rural roads are not 100% accurate with the address markings, but I've been past cow paths and oil well roads that were marked on the NAV map. We us it a lot of find secluded properties. I also have a Garmin 2610 and mapping is just as complete. I feel the POI's are a bit better on the Garmin, but the Ody Nav is the best OEM I've owned (lexus, audi were others).
Don't forget the factory NAV adds quite a few extra features in addition to just the NAV. You also get: Backup camera, voice activated audio/nav/climate controls, fully functioning XM, and touch-screen audio. The antenna is also color painted to match the exterior and includes the XM antenna all inone.
At the end of March I was in San Antonio. We had full coverage of the area--although the entire city seems to be under construction and we got re-routed several times because the exits were closed for detours. We took a day trip to Corpus Christi and also had no problems what so ever. In fact, I can't think of a single hotel, diner, or park that we failed to find in the NAV. If you get the NAV Honda, it already has the XM--after the trial period, you can pick up on the service without a hitch.
I just bought the Odyssey over the weekend. I could not find my street on the NAV. When I drive on my street, it shows on the bottom of the screen. When I look closer, it mispell the street name.
The map data is compiled by outside companies. From what I've gathered, there are only a couple companies that supply this data to ALL the NAV manufacturers. What you have is very common for the most part, misspellings, roads named different than what they're marked (or known by everyone as). Both my Honda NAV, Lexus NAV, and Garmin (as well as mapquest) have my house about 1/2 mile down the road on the other side. It's very rural here, but that's pretty much par for the course. It's not going to be accurate within a few feet. But it should get you in the ballpark. Sometimes you have to search for street names by listing them, so you can pickup on a misspelling. The good news is, you know where you live so that issue shouldn't amount to much :P
I believe 4.31 is the latest NAV version on the Ody. Check your CD to see what you have.
Thanks alot for the post. I am moving there in Dec and hopefully get an Ody soon there after. I did not like the modifications that needed to be made to a car for the AVIC-N3 after market navigation system by pioneer. So if it is as good as you say then I will not have an problem in southern Texas.
I bought an '06 RES/NAV last week and was excited at first about the purchase. After using the NAV on several trips, I am a little deflated.
There are so many restaurants, gas stations, etc. that are not listed in my area. There is a gas station near my house that was built 6 years ago and the NAV cannot find it. I live in suburban Philadelphia so the coverage should be complete.
Also, I having about 10% success rate with the NAV voice commands. "Find nearest gas station" usually turns the radio off or AC on.
Thanks. My dvd version is 4.31. When I pick out the street (misspelling) from the list and then enter the house number, the NAV shows my house about 10 houses up the street.
The wife will be very angry about this b/c she does not want the NAV in the first place.
Whoever have Odyssey or other Honda cars, they better check the house number first before ring the door bell.
I've been running some form of NAV for about 5 years, mainly with my Garmin 2610. You've got to be a bit realistic with what can be expected. I do find the points-of-interest (POI's) to be a bit lacking on the OEM system, but have found that to be true with Lexus and Audi systems as well. Not sure where Garmin gets there data, but it is better. Plus the Garmin has a sexy Brit chick guiding me which is far hotter than the bland sounding Honda girl.
It is frustrating when you're looking for something that's been there for many years. I use mine a lot for phone numbers and get frustrated as well at times. It's pretty much par for the course though with any NAV system.
As for voice commands....I've found if the radio is on or the HVAC blowing very hard, it doesn't respond well. You also have to be careful if you have an accent. I personally don't use voice commands...I just don't like talking to inanimate objects. I don't use the voice commands on my cell either.
I found a way to backup the DVD. The bad thing is the original DVD is dual layer format. I had to spend 8 bucks for one DVD to try it out. The backup DVD works OK so far.
I'm thinking of backing up mine too. I saw some scratches on it while pulling it out to check the version. I don't want to spend $185 just to get a replacement.
I've been considering buying a newer version (mine is 4.13). My dealer says $250, but most of the references in the forum refer to $185 Can you tell me where the updated version is for sale at $185?
Just had the trans replaced in our 2000 Ody and the NAV stopped working. Maps are there and track ok, but when you plan a trip, it starts the route from the same incorrect location no matter where you are, and it just keeps saying "Proceed to..." and doesn't track the vehicle location to the planned route. When it is showing the map, the vehicle is not positioned correctly, and after about an hour, the whole unit reboots to the startup screen. My mechanic checked all the wires, replaced the one sensor from the nav to the trans twice, and took it to Honda directly when he couldn't figure it out. They checked all the wiring, etc. too, and then said we had to buy the DVD upgrade before they could look any further. I disconnected the unit, removed the DVD, etc. trying to get the unit to reset, but nothing corrected the problem. Problem is it's a 2000, and after the cost of the trans, I'd rather not pay for the upgrade if I don't have to. The unit worked fine all this time, until the trans repair. Anybody have any ideas?
I just purchased an '06 Touring with NAV and RES, I have had the Odyssey for less than a week! The first two days I had the van the Nav worked perfectly. Then yesterday it started doing everything in reverse, i.e. it plots me going North when I am going South and East when going West. The compass on the dash is doing the same thing. As you can imagine, this gets me further and further from the correct position of my vehicle every time I drive. I shudder at the thought of having to bring the van to the Honda dealer as I have one year old twins, and car seats, etc. This is very frustrating. Is there any way to fix this myself, or do I have to bring it in??
Maybe it is usefull to look at www.nav4all.com. I read some good reviews about it and if you nav system is failing maybe this would be a good alternative
i bought 2002 honda odyssey with nevigation system from USA. but i am living in canda. the navigation CD is only work for USA. when i come to canada the navigation shows only N-S-EW. but no map. i called the honda company but they said no upgrade CD is avialable for this van for canada.
please help me what can i do. if i will buy canadian CD , how does it will work with my US odyssey.

That's a file that will give you detail/diagrams I believe. That's where I worked from.

Tell her to pretend it's not there. No reason she HAS to use it. Problem solved :P
Last week I took the dvd out to check the version for the first time, I saw it has alot scratches already.
Did you use +R or -R dual layer disc?
Thanks for any leads.

Stop by a dealer in Canada and ask nicely if they would pop it in the ensure it works before you buy it. If they agree, buy it from them
Good Luck.

One section of CA-58 was new (built several years ago) and with my old Garmin V map, it'd show that route as off route and not on the map.
The Ody NAV on the other hand mapped it out clearly.
I've read somewhere that some people with older versions would see this section as off route.
So I guess version 4.31 has a newer database despite the date??
Can someone drove this road before comment?
