They might drive well but VW's are too problematic (made in MEXICO for godsakes!). Besides, a Passat V6 equiped comparably to a Camry XLE V6 is well over 30K.... i'd definitely get something else in the market.
  • maxamillion1maxamillion1 Member Posts: 1,467
Actually, if you are a good haggler, you can get a Passat GLX for about 500 over invoice, which is about $27,500 with a manual transmission. The Passat with automatic for about 28,500. The Passat might cost more, but it adds many features not available on the Camry, such as heated seats, memory seats, tilt down rear passenger mirror, refrigerated glove box, but the Camry does come with an AM/FM/CD6/Cassette while the Passat only offers an AM/FM/Cassette for now anyway.

Also, according to Consumer Reports, the Passat's reliablity is Average.
  • har1bushhar1bush Member Posts: 207
well a 28,5 price is still much more than the accord or camry (heck, if a loaded Passat costs that much and has all those things, maybe Accord and Camry buyers shouldnt even be comparing to the Passat). For that price, why not get an Acura TL or the '02 Maxima (both of which will be similarly equiped, but with better engines), maybe even a strip-down Mercedes C240 or BMW 325? To me, 28K is a bit too much for a VW, but hey, its just my opinion... Plus ppl who buy a toyota buy it for its reliability... average reliability is no where NEAR the Camry...

    Hi!

I'm finally getting my new Camry Collector Edition! I'm very excited about it, but I'm trying to figure out what my trade-in is worth... If anyone can give me some advice, I'd be VERY grateful!

I have a 1985.5 Porsche 944 with 72,000 miles on it. Any idea how much my car is worth? (I'd love to keep it, but I now need a larger car, and I know I won't get a chance to use it anymore.)

It's Kalihari Beige, which is basically the metallic champagne color. It has a dark brown leather interior. It is NOT a turbo 944. It's in great condition with only a few minor dings from parking in parking lots. It has a few cracks in the dashboard. It has never been in an accident. It needs a new radio/cassette player, but the original is still in the car.

I'd really appreciate any advice you can give me about this, because the wholesale values I've seen have varied widely. The dealer told me that they usually use Galves wholesale pricing. I tried to look up the Galves price online, but apparently you need to be a subscriber in order to access the prices. (It's not really worth subscribing to look up one car!)

Also, if I were to sell the car on my own, does anyone have an idea about how much I should ask for it? I live in NJ, if that makes any difference.

    Thanks for your help!

    Regards,
    Chloe

That's a tough call. That is really a car you shouldn't trade in. The dealer really can't rely on book of any type and will probably call a few wholesalers to get a value. That value will depend on what those particular qholesalers specialize in and I'll bet they don't handle older sports cars on a regular basis. If you can afford to not have the money in hand from the sale of the Porsche, just be patient and sell it on your own. E-Bay may be a good place to list it.

    Hi!

I typed in the Title and clicked Enter instead of Tab again, so I just posted a title and no message. You'd think I would learn...

Anyway, thanks for the tip about trading the Porsche. I got a quote of $3000.00 for the Porsche plus an old 1989 Toyota Camry LE with 160,000 miles on it. The guy told me most of the money is for the Porsche and about 350 bucks is for the Camry.

    Any opinions???

    Thanks again!

My sarcasm was meant for the other person's misspell...ciao.
  • cliffy1cliffy1 Member Posts: 3,581
That sounds about right, depending on the condition of the Camry. With that many miles, the most it could be worth is $500 to $750 if everything works and there isn't any rust. $350 isn't too shocking on it. Again, I am no expert on Porsche values, but $2650 seems fairly reasonable for a good condition, non-turbo 16 year old 944. If it were a 911 it would be a different story.
  • chloe6chloe6 Member Posts: 38
    Hi!

Thanks for the advice. I only wish it were a 911... but then I'd never sell it and it would sit in the garage FOREVER!

    Thanks again!

The Passat isn't a reliable car... It's nice looking I think, but it's not a reliable car...
    None of VW's are reliable..
Go the the VW section of Edmunds, and click on the passat or whatever you like ,and you'll see for yourself.... Toyota Camry has been reliable for years.. Camry has been the #1 car for four years...Why? Because it's reliable ,and great looking! Chow!!! :)
  • sunshine60105sunshine60105 Member Posts: 129
Have you seen a peak of the new 2002 Camry?

    Later! :)

The new camry's aren't as realiable as your 94. So good luck with your 2002 purchase. Hope it turns out as realiable as your past Camry. Just make sure to change your oil every 3k miles at the toyota dealer so you won't develop sludge like I did in my 97 camry. And I love my new VW Jetta. C I A O.....

what is the web address to view the new car. Can you post a link. thanks in advance

I think you're making a generalization, based on your experience with a Camry. I'm 20, and I purchased my first car 3 years ago, a used 94 Civic coupe with 89K (obviously all highway) on the odo. Being a Honda, I thought it was going to run forever, I had everything checked out by mechs and had the service record, and anyone I've ever know who has owned Hondas for extended periods of time have gotten over 150K.... Head Gasket failed at 95K, strading me on a highway and never ran right again, so I sold it at a substantial loss. My car was a piece of trash, even though everything (service)was done almost exactly at 3000 mile intervals. That doesnt mean I think Civics suck and are of low quality.
    Just my two cents.

For problems, my 2000 Camry has had:

    Fuel injectors replaced.
    Strut mounts replaced.
    Tie rods end replaced.
It is now due for both front struts to be replaced.

I have lost the use of the car for 3 days, and due to lose one more.

Overall, more rattles and trouble than the famoulsy unreliable Dodge minivans.

How many miles on your car?

22,800 miles, Driven gently, serviced meticulously.

My 2001 V6 LE has 1,000 miles on it now. Should I change the oil and filter or wait untill 3,000 miles? Does Toyota use a special break-in oil that should be left in it till 3,000 miles?
  • vnguyen16vnguyen16 Member Posts: 10
Pics of 2002 Camry is everywhere. I found a lot of them in www.freshalloy.com forum but so far, all pics are photoshopped or air-brushed. Some persons posted that they saw the new spy pics in Motor Trend magazine, Aug. issue. Check out for 2002 Camry TRD. They said something special about it.
  • vchengvcheng Member Posts: 1,284
you could do it now, or even 2500 miles. I dont think it wil matter much in the long run. AFAIK, there is no special break in oil used by Toyota.

The info should be in your owners manual. They have the maintenance schedule inside.

I am in LOVE with the drawings of the 2002 Camry TRD, I am buying the magazine tonight, and I will scan the pictures if you would like. I also am in LOVE with the 2002 Nissan Altima.

I will warn all of you. DO NOT follow the manual for your toyota oil changes. If you do you will develop sludge in your engins. I repeat. Please change your oil every 3K miles. Toyota says 5K-7500 miles. This is wrong. Especially for 4 cylinder camrys. I followed the manual's advise and my 97 camry developed sludge at 46k miles. My intervals were between 5k and 7k. Just MHO from someone who has been there. AND GO TO THE TOYOTA DEALER AND KEEP ALL YOUR RECEIPTS FOR PROOF.
  • s852s852 Member Posts: 1,051
Plenty of people follow the manual without developing sludge. If you got sludge changing the oil every 5-7.5K miles, then something else was wrong. Either the oil or filter was defective or they were not really changing the oil or something else was physically wrong with the car.

Don't you think you're coming down just a teentsy bit too hard on Camrys?
C'mon now, even you have to admit that your blanket condemnation is going way too far!
On the other hand, if you do manage to convince someone to be that cautious, their Toyota will probably outlive them!
  • s852s852 Member Posts: 1,051
Assuming the info posted above is not bogus (and is referring to US spec models and not vehicles sold in Japan only), maybe I won't get a 2001 ES300 or 2002 Altima after all!
  • s852s852 Member Posts: 1,051
It sounds like it could overstep into the Avalon pricing area.
Driver and passenger power seats, vehicle skid control, navigation and some other things sound like they would normally only be on a Lexus.
One glaring missing item seems to be heated seats. If your going to have the rest of all that stuff, you might as well throw in heated seats also.
Does it have power key-fob controlled trunk opener?
  • sbell4sbell4 Member Posts: 446
I appreciate your concern but I assure you that the information above is not "bogus". Depending on which region of the United States you live in, different packages will be combined with other factory equipment and possible port installed equipment to customize your new Camry. I am only posting factory packages because anyone in the U.S. can get these packages. A buddy of mine drove the new Camry at the Georgetown plant today and he said the car is bigger, smoother and more refined and with luck the release date will be moved up to June 9th but nothing is official. I agree with you that nothing is official until the car is here but I would be willing to wager a dollar or two that the above info is accurate.
  • flacaflaca Member Posts: 168
I drove 2 camrys for the past nine years. My 97 did not meet my high expectations I had for Toyota. So if I want to come hard on this particular car I will. You want to hear my Volvo stories? How about Jeep's? How about a 73 240z? All had horrible engines. My best cars were a 80 280zx and my 93 Camry.
  • mackabeemackabee Member Posts: 4,709
sbell is correct. The packages he listed will be available on the new Camry. Heated seats is an option with the leather packages. The car (at least) will be at dealerships August 15th. Trim levels will be LE, XLE, and SE.

    : )

  • mackabeemackabee Member Posts: 4,709
correction: the car (at least one) will be at dealerships August 15th. We have 2 on our allocation with the gv package but no prices have been announced yet. Discontinued colors: Antique Sage, Cashmere beige, Graphite grey, Sailfin Blue, and a couple others I can't remember as I don't have the spec sheet in front of me. New colors: Black walnut pearl, Stratosphere Blue Mica, Dark pearl green, Desert sand mica (same as on Avalon) and a new grey, Lunar mist is still available for 2002.

    : )

    Mackabee

p.s 3 new interior color choices will also be available. Interior is very similar to the Japanese Mark II Enjoy.

Glad to know that the '02 Camry has the Navi option. I don't think the '02 Altima will have it. That will give Honda some motivation to put Navi in the '03 Accord.
  • maxamillion1maxamillion1 Member Posts: 1,467
Okay, I have a few questions.

First, which packages go with which models.

Second, what's the deal with the TRD model, I really need to know, because I am considering it.

Third, Why is Toyota thinking of moving the release date up, are they worried that the Altima might be giving the new Camry to much competition.

And Lastly, when do we get offical pics of the darn car, come on, Nissan released pictures of the Altima back in April (May for some of us).
    Thanks in advance
    Max
  • har1bushhar1bush Member Posts: 207
the Altima will not have this option, but imagine how much the new Camry with a navigation system will cost... the current XLE loaded is already carrying an MSRP of about 26K -- will that mean that a navigation system equiped Camry will be hovering around 28K? OUCH! Let's hope that the magic of mass production and cost efficiency will lower those prices for the new Camry~
  • maxamillion1maxamillion1 Member Posts: 1,467
The Maxima offers it right for 2002, maybe when the Maxima is redesigned in 2003, the Altima will get it. I don't really see what the deal is with the navigation system, in Europe and Japan, you can get the navigation system on the Corolla and other entry-level cars.

Also, the Camry probably want be seen with the Navigation system that much anyway, although it will be offered on the Maxima, I think only about 7% of SE models, and 8% of GLE models will have the navigation system, not many cars in my opinion. What % of Camrys will have the Navi anyway?

Also, nice to see that the sunshade option is offered.

Does the 2002 Camry look like pictures from www.MAG-X-.com? The tail lights don't look good to me. Hope they make the tail different from the pics.

    Hey Max! :)
I love the pics of the 2002 Camry also!
    I think it's great... It's sleek,sporty,and elegant...
Which car do you think that your gonna end up purchasing? :) I hear that Nissan and Infiniti is expensive to ensure... Or maybe it depends on the person's age.... :)
I'm 26 ,and it was very expensive for me to insure a Infinti G20,and I've never had a ticket
    ever... Knock on wood... :)
    Courtney :)
P.S. If you would like to talk further about the Camrys then please feel free to email me at sunshine60105@hotmail.com ,and I'll help you if I can.... :)

My sister's inlaw's have a 2000 Camry, and they love it, they haven't had a bit of trouble with it.. They love it!!!! Chow!!! Happy TGIF!!!
  • sunshine60105sunshine60105 Member Posts: 129
I agree with you, plenty of people follow the instructed oil changes that are suggested in the owners manual ,and nothing happens... There must be something else wrong with the car..If you dont follow the instructed oil changes ;then, you run the risk of something going wrong with the car because the oil wasn't changed when the manual said to change it...

I heard somewhere that you can request for a Camry that was strictly built in Japan because
in Japan they take more pride in their work, and it's better quality. Me, I dont know if I want to wait that long for a car... Japan is the other side of the world... Camrys are good cars, it's just that some people have gotten a car that was
put together in poor quality, but how common is that really? Not that common..If you test drive the car with the radio off the second time or the second half of the test drive ;then, you should be able to tell if anything is wrong with the car..
Hope I didn't offend anybody, and if I did ;then, I appologize... With any line of car that is good there's gonna be a lemon now and then
and hopefully the person will detect the lemon before they purchase it,but chances are great that the next car of the same name(camry) will be better with no problems quiet engine and so forth.
    Sorry for the long post.
    Goodluck!!!! :)
