    G'day

I think that there were a few coachbuilders doing conversions. I agree that they are not graceful with the top up, but top down, absolutely exquisite. A rather notorious British politicians, Alan Clark owned one.

Yes - The DS Chapron Coupe 'Le Dandy' - they made a few of these, but maybe not more than ten or so - it looked good but not as spectacular as the decapotable - which is great when the roof is off....

I had (probably still have, in the attic) a model of one of these coupes by Corgi - it was a metallic plum colour I think - but I had never seen one until Essen this year...

Funny, that's exactly how I knew the name, because of the Corgi toy.

Handsome Fiat 2300 (Italian fintail) in front, I'll let someone else pick off the car at right (hint, it's a German).

    magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,156
Yes Fintail its a Fiat but according to the caption it is an 1800 rather than the 2300 (there as also a 1900 and in some parts of Europe they had a 1500 engine too).

I'll leave the other car for now - someone will get it.

From the front fender flares I am going to guess that it's a Cobra. i don't have any clue who she is either.

good catch tmart! My bad, calling him a her. Funny thing how I got his gender wrong---Tara Browne was a London socialite and his mom was a Guinness heiress---so pretty well off to say the least. But I remembered that he was an inspiration for a famous Beatles song, and I thought it was Lucy in the Sky, etc, but alas, it was not--it was "A Day in the Life".

    Yep, it's a Cobra!

He hit a truck while driving his Lotus Elan and that was it for him, in 1966.

    Yep, it's a Cobra!

IIRC Cobras sold in the UK all wore that AC badge, instead of the "snake" badge seen on this sideof the pond. I have a US sales brochure which labels them as Shelby AC Cobrapowered by Ford..

Well that's quite possible...this could be what was called in the UK the "AC 289" because it was built there.

Cobra history is quite convoluted and peppered with law suits and all kinds of Shelby shenanigans.

    G'day

This has been bugging me as I realised after suggesting Borgward that it was not fancy enough. Have ultimately placed it as a DKW Junior. Never seen one in the flesh but do know they came from Dusseldorf with some assembled in Holland. Also there is something about assembly in Ireland.

bizarrely, I recalled my schoolboy German incredulity to discover that the initials were a typical shortening for Dampfkraftwagen (literally Steam Driven Vehicle). I think that idea died rapidly. DKW were one of the constituent companies of Auto Union.

Was the Junior the last German 2 stroke?

    Cheers

Yes - DKW Junior. I saw a couple of these at the Essen car show, and also saw one in Birmingham NEC last winter.

I think this may have been the last West German 2-stroke but the DDR had a few more years of these - Wartburg will still making 2-strokes until the late 70s or early 80s although they stopped them selling in the West for environmental reasons earlier than that - we stopped getting Wartburgs in UK from 1973, I recall.
Trabant went on well into the 80s before changing to the 4-stroke.

You're both right. The shape of the Pontiac appears to be distorted by the camera angle or something.

1967 Ford Galaxie 500 two-door hardtop...nearly identical to the one my friend is currently doing some engine work to in order to resell...his is a 390 though, unlike this car, and has full wheelcovers.

I grew up on GM, but looking inside his Galaxie and a very nice '67 Fairlane 500 at a recent cruise really drove home to me that, IMHO, the General had it all over Ford in interiors...just the seat trim of comparable models, things like armrests, window cranks, handles, etc.

Yup, it's a '67 Ford Galaxie 500 much like the one owned by F1 Champion Jim Clark. Clark, whose Lotus F1 car used Ford Cosworth power, had the "7Litre" version of the 1967 Galaxie 500XL.

Unlike that one, however, this one has a small engine; a 289 cid V-8 or even possibly a 240 cid six.

Yup, the lack of an engine badge on the flank indicates it's not packing much heat under that big hood. IIRC anything from the 390 up got a badge.

My sister had a first year model Firebird (not a convertible). I don't remember the wheel wells being all swoopy like that. Pretty sure her's was the base with the six cylinder in it. Bright yellow.

She was out of the house and off to college by then and I had just gotten my learner's permit so I only got to drive it once. Took a couple of visiting cousins to the drive-in.

No side marker lights, so it's '67 Firebird, right?

Beats me - mostly what I remember about that car was her parking it in the front yard so everyone driving by would be sure to see it. And then there was the time she was running me somewhere on the highway and didn't notice that the Greyhound bus in front of us was slowing to pull off at a stop, and wasn't actively braking to trigger the brake lights. I thought we were going to drive right under it. :shades:

Right, '68 was the first year with side marker lights. Also, '67 had vent windows which were gone the next year.
For fun, when (if) you watch Diners, Drive-ins, & Dives check out which red convertible Camaro Guy Fieri is driving - he seems to switch between the original '67 (with vent windows) to a '68 or '69 (without vent windows).

Yup that is a first year 1967 Pontiac Firebird Sprint. Sprint versions of the Firebird and Tempest used a SOHC six, an option that didn't prove popular in that era of cheap gas.

"OHC 6 Sprint" lettering (barely visible) on the lower flank indicates this option.

Yes indeed, the 2 liter, 4 cyl. precursor to the wonderful 6 cylinder E9 Bimmers
    (2800CS, 3.0CS/CSL).

I've always thought the resemblance to the '65 Corvair coupe was remarkable considering that the 2000C/CS reached showrooms in 1965, the same year as the 'Vair. Who was stealing from whom?

Looks like a pair of '58 Cadillacs! A white Eldorado convertible and a black 'regular' Fleetwood or 62 or deVille. Whatever show or movie it is, it must be set in Miami as indicated by the license plate.

Yup, it's a pair of '58 Caddies, the white convertible being a rare Eldorado Biarritz. The black is a limousine (Series 75?).

The still is from Magic City which is set in Miami Beach in 1959 so it is chock full of 50s vintage iron especially of the upscale sort. It's also a pretty well-made acted and written series. (Starz, Fri 9P edt)

Oh there were plenty of differences but they also had similar styling and both featured IRS, a real rarity in the mid 1960s. I have a hard time believing there wasn't some "industrial espionage" going on.
