Check engine code shows Oxygen Sensor. Dealer cost is around $125. Can a generic, aftermarket sensor be used? How many wires? http://www.carpartswholesale.com/ has them listed for $20 to $ 34 depending on how many wires, from 1 to 4. Any help appreciated Thanks in advance!! --Jim

My daughter has a 2001 Accent. She bought it used in 2002 from original owner with approx. 8000 miles. Has been a pretty good little car until now. She got a check engine light a few days ago. Took it to local Hyundai dealer and they say it is the catalytic converter. They quoted a $1400 repair price. Car now has 88000 miles on it. Does it really cost that much to replace a cat. converter or is she gettin ripped off? Thanks for any replies.

a new cat converter costs about 130, depending where u purchase it from etc...prices will vary loads. you'll be paying for the cost of the labour mianly. i wouldn't have thought the time it takes to weld a converter on is worth $1400, could probably get a whole new exhaust system cheaper than that. try two or three garages and ask for a price up, if the prices are similar, then i guess that's the cost of the job.

That seems expensive. The local dealership for my Honda only wanted about $800 for that and the heat shield replacement.

Check some other places, but also check to see if it might still be under warranty. I know it sounds odd, but exhaust systems are starting to get special warranties, outside of everything, that are only dependent on the car, and not the owner.

Or it may just be a California thing.

Agreed, but don't go to a mechanic for a catalytic converter, go to a muffler shop, aftermarket converters (and O2 sensors) have become a cheap commodity. I'd personally wouldn't go to Midas, though, the bill could be more than $1500.

It could be the Hyundai dealer was including a major tuneup along with the converter, but still that should be $800 max.

Thanks for the responses and the good info. I thought that was a pretty steep price to replace converter. Unfortunately my daughter was impatient and gave permission for the repair. I had asked her to wait for your replies. The dealer that charges $1400 to replace a cat. converter on an Accent is Rountree Hyundai, Shreveport, La. Thanks again.

    Hello,
I am going to change the oil today (before the heat sets in!) and I also want to change the spark plugs. I have an 04 GT with about 62K miles on it, original plugs!! I thought they were a 60K interval, but I've come to find they're a 30K item :-( Anyhow, I'm pretty certain I know where they are on the engine (just to the right of the valve cover? They appear to be alligned length-wise with the car) Is this correct? Also,I'm pretty sure Hyundai didn't take the liberty to put anything too special in a car the retailed for $10,000, so I'm going to upgrade to some Bosch Platinums, +2's maybe. Anything I should know? And yes, I know I'm going to need a gapping tool. Any help is appreciated!

Ok nevermind! I found the plugs just fine (right in front of my face) However, these are traditional plugs w/ a plug wire set up which leads me to believe there's a distributor somewhere. If so, where is it? And is a new cap and rotor in order?

This reply might be late for the original poster but perhaps it will help someone else in the future.

Some of the biggest gas mileage killers are low radiator fluid or a failed thermostat. Check coolant reservoir to be sure the fluid is at the correct level. Low coolant can result in wrong temperature sensor readings which causes too much gas to be sent to the engine. A failed open thermostat will have the same effect.

Other possible fuel economy vampires low tire pressure, worn bearings, and worn out sensors.

Purchased a Borg Warner 4 wire from Ebay for $ 22.95 shipped! Had to remove old OS Sensor and wire new one on the four wires: two white, one gray, one black. Does not matter which way the white wires go. But, of course, black and gray must to to their mates of the same color. Drove care for a couple of miles and it runs perfect. This is the upstream OS Sensor. Will do the downstream one next. They are identical Sensors: both four wire.

Anyone have an idea of where the trans speed sensor is on the 1.6L? Also the cost of same w/o labor and or the cost to replace from dealer?

    Thank You.

Hi, you should have two speed sensors on your transmission, and input speed and an output speed. Ie a speed of revolutions from the engine, and a speed of revolutions after gone through the gear box, if that makes sense...

You're looking for bolts, these sensors are held in place by bolts. I've not taken them out on my car, however i would assume their will be one either end of the gear box. Have a drip tray ready for oil spilling out, up to 2-3 litres may pour out upon removal of these bolts holding the sensors in.

I dont know how much these sensors are, however im sure you could find out on the net. Could also read up about them a bit more on the net if you're not totally sure of what you're doing.

Hi mib4t, I thought I did a lot of miles on my '99 Accent with 197,000, but yours is 3 years newer and has 20,000 more miles! Not a bad investment at all. I am curious to know how many other 200,000+ mile Accents there are out there. This has been the most reliable vehicle I have owned.

In reply to your message, my flex pipe went about 2 years ago, and Midas replaced the joint for $70. It's much cheaper than to go to the dealer.

Hope the info is useful, and good luck.

apart from tires a new battery at 185000 and a clutch at 130000 everything is all original its using oil now valve guide seals i think as for the exhaust i am in email discussion with a rep from bosal as to the suitability of their system for my accent (I have just emailed the details from the emissions label).i think it is ok for the older versions pre 2000 and am waiting for an email to see if ok for my model its about $60 and is an easy self fit. I know of one other that is two years old and has over 120000 miles on it with no problems. I will let you know as to the reply from bosal when i get it.

djdublm have you figured out what was going wrong with your accent, I have a tiburon with the same problem and I am stumped?? I was thinking its the tps. check yours to see if you have a "dea sung". I was told this might be the culprit because they are known to fail

I had the same problem a few years ago with my 96 Accent. Took it back twice and thought it was fixed.
I was driving down the highway yesterday and it blew out. The entire frame had rusted from the moisture. Fortunately, no one was hurt.

Body shop sent me to sunroof specialist who sent me back to dealer. No luck. They "might" be able to put another in buit also suggested that I take it to a body shop and have a real roof put on. Approximate cost for any of their suggestions...$1000.

Make sure it is fixed properly.

Hi there, I hope somebody can advise me on this. My 05 Accent manual shift has a lot of free play in the drive line. Every time you step off the accelerator and back on again, the free play can be felt resulting in a knock going through the whole body of the car as the slack is taken up. I suspect the clutch plate itself, it sound like the springs in the plate to me. The dealer says the amount of free play is normal and all Accents have it. Any opinions please?

I have a 2002 accent with 218 000 miles, on its second clutch and have not had this problem with the original or replacement, I have a little play in the driveshafts now but suspect that is down to some universal joint wear.

you could try checking the engine mounts if they are loose the whole engine transmission could be jumping how many miles do you have on the car what is the warranty status you may want to email or contact Hyundai directly if the dealer is not being responsive

when you get an answer post it so the other owners can watch out for the same thing

I have 17 000 miles on it. Bought it used at 11 000 miles. When you rock the car when it is in gear with the hood open, you can hear the free play/noise coming from the clutch or transmission. I will check the mountings and try to contact Hyundai directly. I'm glad to hear about 218 000 miles, there is a lot of value left for my money!

    Hello All,

I have had a problem with the transmission cutting out in slow and stop and go traffic, It seems to lose overdrive and 1st gear. If I turn the engine off and back on I get them back for a little while. If I get on the freeway and keep my speed up to about 60 or so I am fine, once I begin to slow down I risk losing the OD gear again. Engine light does not come on when this happens. At slower speeds it seems to kick out of gear and when accelerating the rpms go up but there is no response from the transmission or very little response, I have to take OD off and drive in 3d gear. I have replaced the Speed Sensors (Pulse Generators) and it still seems to have this problem. Do I need to clear any codes in the computer? Maybe I got the wrong sensor from the dealer or it was defective? anyone have any ideas? Thank You.

Well in the Canadian winter I have had some trouble starting the Hyundai accent, which is nothing new given the fact that the car is small and past that isn't built for the cold. So there were a couple days when it wouldn't start and I thought nothing of it and I just got a boost and went on my way. When the weather did turn around the problem still remained so I pulled some fuses and used the voltmeter and was able to determine that there was a short in the ECU which is leading to the battery getting drained overnight, every night. Now short of opening the hood and disconnecting the battery every time that I get out of the car I am completely lost as to what to do.

If it is an actual issue in the ECU I can't help but think that I would be best served by just getting rid of the Accent but past that I am lost.

It could just be your battery, they tend to wear out after 5-7 years or so, losing their ability to fully charge and hold their charge. So you could try puttin a new battery in and see if that helps.

I had the exact same problem that the first person had with their emc, replaced it, battery is charged, but the car still won't start. Any suggestions? It turns over, but won't catch.

Hi, I just bought an '07 Accent after getting over 200,000 miles out of my '99 Accent, and I used Crutchfield.com to get detailed instructions on how to remove the old deck and speakers on the '99. Hope that helps you.

i'm planning of buying a brand new hyundai accent 2 door hatchback.. don't know anything about cars so i need ur honest opinion on this please. i've heard mixed reviews about this car and hyundai in general and i'm really confused. personally, i like it becasue it's cheap and it looks cute. i do not know how to judge the car beyond that. some people say that hyundai's engines don't perform that well so i've been cautioned about that.. do you think this is a good buy? the warranty looks really good, but my dad don't trust hyundai cars so i don't know what to think right now... thanks :)

My advice is, don't just buy a car because it's cheap and looks cute. First, since you are the driver of the car, you should enjoy driving it. So take an Accent for a test-drive and figure out if it is a car that you can live with every day, in both driving and in comfort and convenience. Is the engine powerful enough for you? How does it handle? Is it quiet enough? How is the braking? Is the rear seat roomy enough for the passengers who may sit back there? Is there enough cargo room, seats up and down? And so on.

Next, make sure it has other features you want/need. Do you want anti-lock brakes, for safety? (I highly recommend them.) If so, you are limited to the Accent SE hatchback, which is higher priced than the GS. Do you need A/C? It's optional on the GS. Is reliability really important to you? If so, the Accent is a pretty reliable car, and it has that long warranty, but there are small cars with better reliability histories. Engine reliability shouldn't be a concern--the Accent's engine design has been around many years, and engines rarely fail these days with proper maintenance.

Also think about crash protection. The Accent has OK frontal crash test scores but a Poor side crash test score from the IIHS. There are other small cars, like the Yaris, Versa, Rabbit, and Fit, with much better crash test scores.

Be sure to check out the Accent's competitors before plopping down your money. For example, the Yaris and Versa are both pretty inexpensive in base form. The Fit and Rabbit (3-door) cost a bit more but are fine little cars. Some people think the Yaris 3-door is really cute--have you seen it?

Your dad probably doesn't trust Hyundais because he remembers the low-quality Excels that Hyundai brought to the U.S. starting in the mid-'80s. That was a long time ago, and Hyundai makes solid cars now. But good luck trying to convince your dad of that.

I have a 2001 Accent with very wierd tranny behaviour. The tranny is an automatic. The tranny fluid is clear and it shifts OK most of the time. Sometimes the tranny jerks when the car starts to move from a stand still.

Sometimes the car rpm's increase at low speed and the car does not accelerate. After the hesitation the car then oeprates properly. The engine seems to run well.

    Any thoughts??

I have my '07 hatch for about two weeks now. I filled up last Wednesday. I drove it Thursday and Friday with no problem. It didnt move Saturday and Sunday. Today I started it to come to work and the "check engine" light is on. Service said it might be from the gas cap.
Can anyone give me some real world stories with this?
    Thanks.

In most hatches, including the Accent, it's under a lift-up cover in the cargo area.

Hi, I have an '07 hatch as well, but I think I recall reading in the manual that if the gas cap was loose, it has a separate light just for that. I don't believe that it would set off the check engine light. I am not 100 percent sure, but I hope that helps.

A loose gas cap can set off the check engine light in many, if not most modern cars. If the Accent has a separate light for a loose gas cap, that is exceptional.

    vinnygvinnyg Member Posts: 77
Yes, I confirmed it in my manual. The Accent has a separate, designated "check fuel cap warning light" that is aside from the "check engine" light. It says if the check engine light goes on and stays on, bring it in to the dealership to get it checked.
    Take care and good luck.

Go immediately to your dealership and insist that they run a computer diagnostic on your Accent. Then pray very hard that the following codes do NOT come up - P0300,P0303,P304,P0302 - these codes mean that there is a misfire in cylinders 3,4&2. If this is the case return your vehicle if you are able, if not immediately call Consumer Protection because you have been screwed.

I purchased my 2007 Hyundai Accent on July 3,2006 and on my way home the check engine light came on. First I was told it was the gas cap even though there is a seperate light for cap. Then I had to wait until December for dealership to receive software from Hyundai to do diagnostic. During this time my car really began to experience problems - decreasing fuel milage (currently down to 19mpg - hmmm why did I trade in my Dodge Caravan?), rough riding, trouble starting. In January Hyundai sent over Engineers from KOREA to study problem. I waited 3 months (and in the meantime filed with Consumer Protection which refered me to Better Business Bureau which handles Hyundai in my area) and the last day that they could reply to my Lemon Law complaint they sent in something called a Reflash for my car's computer. This was their Final Repair Attempt on my car - which was performed on April 19, 2007. Guess what - the engine light came back on this week and yesterday the same codes came out when dealership ran diagnostic.

The mechanics at my dealership then told me that they have five other Accents with same problem and showed me one Hyundai with 4,000miles - it's spark plugs were burnt up!!! They also told me that Hyundai cannot fix this problem.

Needless to say I have reopened my complaint and am now waiting for a buy back offer.

I really hope you do not have the same experience I have had but protect yourself and get that diagnostic run.

So I am in the market for a timing belt and I called a few auto parts store and cheapest I got was around 52+tax for 2002 Hyundai Accent 1.6L Hatchback. And the warranty on all of them was same only 1 year. Then I searched froogle.com and found alot of timing belts around 30 bucks+6 shipping. I called the online store's 800 number and they said the one I am interested has a life time warranty.

Did you guys realize this too, I mean it is no brainer, it has a much cheaper price and a life time warranty. The online store is www.rockauto.com. Any idea how this is possible? Why the huge price difference, am I missing something?

Check the warranty carefully, to make sure "lifetime warranty" means what you think it means. Sometimes (believe it or not) a "lifetime warranty" means exactly that--it's warranted for the lifetime of the part, i.e. until it breaks.

F.Y.I. Had my engine suddenly die at 84,000 miles (2002 Hyundai Accent 1.6L). 1-800 Hyundai towed me to Riverside Hyundai (good tow service about 45min wait 3 call backs to check progress) Very nice service advisor (David) kept mentioning "it will probably be covered under warranty". I thought he was just saying that to make me feel better. After ok for $82 to look at it (fuel pressure and electrical check) called for a $300 dollar ok to crack open the engine for further investigation. Every phone call ended with a reminder that "it will probably be covered under warranty". I called kinda' irate after 5 days about the delay (including a weekend) and David mentioned he was working to get Hyundai warranty to cover what was a failed tensioner and resulting valve damage and he had to get the proper documentation and get parts delivered from Hyundai he finished with the rejoinder "I'm trying to get it covered under warranty". Well I was waiting for a $2400 bill or a big fight with "show me receipts" or "it's related to the timing belt" etc. When I went to pick up my car the bill came to $15.22 for a fan belt. Everything else was covered. Towing, tear down, head assembly, 12 valves, gaskets, tensioner, timing belt etc. at 84,000 miles! Unusual or par for hyundai warranty? I'm a very satisfied customer!

Just proves that, while the Hyundai powertrain warranty doesn't cover everything on the car, it's a lot better to have a 10 year/100k mile warranty than not have it. :)

I go tomorrow morning to get that 'diagnostic' run.. I only have 1200 miles on my 2007 hatchback and that damned 'check engine light' came on.. They told me the same 'gas cap' story and said it takes about a day to turn off..
How did you make out with the buy back?? I'm anticipating that I'm going to have the same problem because my gas milage dropped from 28 mpg to 20 mpg (I check every tankfull).. Hopefully I caught it early enough.. Any help would be greatly appreciated.. (I really love this little car)

I know your pain! I love my little car and it is right now in Hyundai Service. I had the check engine light come on. Last Thursday I went in and sat there and waited for it, they said they fixed it. Then Saturday the light came back on. The trouble codes were for a cylinder misfire. I brought it back in on Monday and said FIX IT! They now are telling me it is a sticky valve and they are having it tested. So I am stuck for the next few days with a loaner.
