What's the difference between a "sunroof" and a "moonroof" and which does my Golf have??? And our Audi A3, which does it have?

Sunroof gets opened dawn to dusk. Moonroof gets opened dusk to dawn.

In general.... sunroofs are metal, and moonroofs are glass...

Although, all are generically known as sunroofs...

To me, a sunroof is something you can't see through. It has to be light to see out of it. A moonroof is transparent, so you can see through it, light or dark.

I never heard that. Checking reviews of my Honda Accord, I see it is variously described as having a moonroof or a sunroof -- it is glass. I think of them as any glass overhead opening that lets in light. I imagine most people do too.

the terms I believe are generally interchangeable. I believe in the definition someone said above. Solid metal panel is a sunroof, glass is a moonroof.

Except solid metal has gone the way of the dodo. And according to one definition, " a moonroof is technically a type of sunroof." There you have it!

Yeah... they coined the term "moonroof", when they started making them out of glass.. Some time in the late '80s, early '90s?

We have a '95 model car with a solid metal sunroof..

so, just a sedan? not a luxury, sport, msport, modern, or some other ridiculous packaging BS? Should be in the $27k-$28k zip code. Will a bimmer store give you the 28k vs the 27k? depends on the store.

I have an 2009 RX 350 AWD Base (no nav) black with tan guts 62000 miles. If I was looking to trade it for a 2009 4Runner SR5 with 4wd and similar miles how much would I have to bring to the table? I realize this isn't a smart play but my wife and I have always liked 4Runners.

I am thinking it is going to be about 4000?

    Is that a V6 4runner?

Problem is, not many have gone through recently. Best guess is that they are worth about the same as trades. So, really, you are simply paying dealer profit and that, of course, is always negotiable. Are you in a state where you get a tax break on the trade? If so, then that effectively negates the taxes and you'll just have fees to contend with. I'd figure $2500-$3k.

    Thanks Q.

We don't have a specific car in mind and where just wondering if it is something doable. It probably isn't a smart move since we "know" the RX and we wouldn't know the 4Runner we don't need the off road capabilities of the 4Runner. It also sounds like it might be tough to find one since we aren't looking at off lease cars.

Here's an update on my car shopping from the last page.

I put in an offer for a 2011 g37 ipl, and received a counter offer from the dealership. Price I was quoted - $24699 OTD, with the vehicle price being $21986.

Apparently the dealer puts lo-jack on all their cars, which is an additional $700.

I am going to ask for a full breakdown of the OTD price before trying to negotiate anything (if its even worth it).

hmmm... well, them selling it well below auction value definitely would make me suspicious, but maybe you hit the lottery. I wouldn't take too long to study the numbers if I were you. I would just make sure they are collecting NJ tax. Fees are a bit on the high side, but, in the end, your OTD is still just about $1k over trade-in value, which is an incredible deal.

This would be for FL. I think its a good price, but in the end...this car is for the SO. So I don't want to push her out of what she feels comfortable paying.

I would like to settle at $23k otd. I think getting rid of the lo-jack and checking what the dealer fee is (on autotrader it says $300, so I want to confirm) will give me a good idea on their rock bottom price.

I know you've mentioned a couple times about being suspicious with this one, but I think the clean carfax with a great maintenance history and it being a range over dealer is enough to give me piece of mind.

I'd rather buy a used car with a detailed carfax history than one without one. Checking paint is easy (especially on this car), and my mechanic can check for frame/mechanical issues. Anyways we'll see if the deal even happens, i'll post an update.

oh yes, I mean, just for resale purposes, you need the carfax. For 99% of people, spotting competent paintwork is far from easy. looking forward to the update.

And while I'm at it, how much do you think CPO should add to the asking price of this car?

miles are super low. A few with 17k averaged $22k. Figure you are getting one of those for $25k. I'm thinking $27k-$28k for CPO with those miles.

GM used to call what we refer to as a moonroof, an Astro-roof. I think Ford called them Moonroofs. I believe american car manufacturers originally introduced the glass sliding roofs while all others were offering steel sliding sunroofs until Honda hit it big with the first Prelude.

You are only going to get $2k-$2500 on the Max. Sell it yourself for $5k.

On the Dodge, you mean 5.7, I'm sure. I don't have a choice of Laramie, so I'll go with SLT. Rust, huh? Oh boy. Tough to pin down without seeing the extent of the damage. Just throwing a number in the wind here, I'll say $6500-$7k, maybe. Clean ones are $9-$9500 at dealer auction, so it really just depends. Again, though, I'd strongly suggest selling this yourself. Some indy contractor would probably love to take it off your hands for $9k or so.

Re: the Maxima. I'm in central Ohio and sold an '01 GLE last year for $3500. And I had people lining up to buy it at that price, so I could probably have got more. I did sell it myself, not trade in, so private sale of $5k is surely doable, maybe more.

    1LT or 2LT? 4-cyl or 6-cyl?

On the Caddy... hmmm... accident history makes it a tough call. (By the way, their description says no accidents. Guess they don't read their own autocheck reports.) A clean one would be $23-24k trade. Really gotta see how good the repair was to make a fair call on it.

equinox - probably $8k-$9k, depending on the repair work.

Santa Fes are all over the place. I'm seeing $17k down to $12k. No idea why. I can't imagine Nav adds $5k. Your miles are on the low side, so you've got that going for you. If it is super nice and damned near perfect, I'd suggest pushing for $13k.

Here's an update on a purchase I was trying to make on a 2011 g37 coupe:

Got to the dealer, car is in excellent condition, interior/exterior...everything.

We agreed to a price. However, the purchaser (my gf) is out of state....this became the problem. Bank of America already told her that she could take care of the purchase/loan remotely, however the dealership (part of penseke automotive) said that she had to be in the dealership to sign, and that it was an institutional policy. We were at an impass, so I left. After I left it dawned on me, check out penseke automotive group and see if they have any dealerships that are part of their network near the house in FL. They did, so I called the dealership back and said what if she went into one of peneseke dealerships in fl and signed the paperwork...I think this could work...

Of course, I haven't heard back from them lol....so I'm guessing the deals dead.

Edit: I forgot to mention, I offered to buy the car cash to get the deal done, but wanted all the documents in my gf's name. They said that wasn't possible either without her being present...
