Well, interestingly, that unit did not specify transmission. So I'm willing to bet the bidders assumed it was an auto and now trying desperately to get out of it without too much pain.

Seems to me older 3-series are often equally if not more valuable than 5-series.

328i wagon = as shocking as this may be, they bought it in the VA auction for $10,600 in the beginning of Jan.

    Ouch.

In terms of the car features, the main desirable from my end is that it's a non-AWD manual wagon (lower maintenance costs, better ride IMO). You don't see these (manual E91s) too often, though this one is not as rare as models with the sport package. I would have paid up a bit for it, but if they are in for over $10k I don't see it happening.

    Thanks for the pricing @qbrozen

You may actually be right about that, come to think of it, although I've observed that once the clock turns 100K, BMWs in general start to depreciate quite heavily, vis-a-vis Lexus or Benz.

Fred, it is worth what the market says it is. If you are the market, offer the 10K or whatever you will go to, and let them deal with it. I know that supply and demand is theory, and some dealers will sit on a car forever to avoid "losing" money, but at some point, they will want to get out of it.

I am guessing that the stick is a big turn off in NOVA. Not to me or you, but the rest of the car buying world. So it may take them a long time to find that special buyer!

though just noticed it is in Richmond. maybe down there a stick is less of an issue, though likely offset by not being as big of a BMW region.

Looks nice though. I like it, even with silver over black color scheme.

I agree with stick. I mean, what they paid is of no consequence to you. Maybe they'll get desperate or maybe they'll take their chances. Can't hurt to try.

2006 Acura RL with Tech package, 153K on the clock, black/black, pretty clean for its age, on its second set of PAX tires. SoCal 90027. What say you? Thanks.

Something like that would be fun for another fun vehicle to have. Would love a 2nd vehicle for me like a convertible to use some of the time just for the fun aspect and also to keep miles off the d d. Wife thinks I'm nuts here but totally serious about this. Back in late 2013, this was my exact plan so I could keep my low mileage 2006 Honda Civic while having something else fun to split the miles with. That's when I started looking at BMW 325 CCI's and after a few duds, found a possible good one, that black/black over saddle model in West Palm Beach. It was a 2005 with just over 37K on the clock and at that point, listed for just under $16K. But the wife veto'd it without really thinking about it and needed to test drive it again and get it looked at by a mechanic. If all these variables fell into place, would've been pretty cool to have bought it and have both vehicles today. Have done about 32K mileage wise since the end of 2013, 16.3K on the Tucson and now about 16K on the Golf. When sold, the Civic had almost 47K on it so if had bought the 325CCI, each would've just added 16K to their mileage then to get to today.
Definitely could've worked and would've had a nice choice, daily, of two nice vehicles to drive without super miles on them. And I think if the wife got behind the wheel of the drop top, she eventually would've loved it also, as she always loved when I got convertible loaners when my Sentra was having it's frequent spaz attachs. Could've been fun actually for the both of us especially living in South Florida where right now, the weather is like paradise where I've been using my sunroof daily where ever I go.
Just proves to me that many times, we just need to follow our gut in situations we're just not sure about as this coulda been a win/win for us both!!!

Trying to get some real world numbers on my 2013 Acura TSX sport wagon. End of lease is July but I may need to get out sooner. I've never returned an Acura lease so I'm not sure how harsh they are. Wondering if a trip to car max and a few less payments nets out to the out of pocket expense to get it ready for end of lease.
A couple dings on the rims and the rear bumper could use some retouching. 25K miles base model. Auto. Grey paint black interior.  SoCal 90245
    thanks.

    I have a 2001 Lexus LS430 with 128k on it.

It has an exhaust leak (CEL), but is otherwise mechanically sound.

The driver and passenger seats are a little worn.

The exterior is in rough shape. There is a dent on the passenger door jamb on the hinge side that goes across the door panel and the front passenger quarter panel. The car was also keyed so there is a scratch from the hood that goes down the driver's side to the rear door. Previous owner also had rusted license plate bolts so the area was sanded and blasted with black rustolium on the factory gold paint. I would say maybe a 3/10 to 5/10 max.

    Clean title otherwise.

Location is in eastern MI. 48124.

Dealer trade? Maybe $1000-1,500 if they'd even take it in; Private party sale, try $2995. Retail for a clean one would have been around $5K-$6K.

    Q? What do you think?
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 33,735
There is no book on such a car. With what you describe, anything on a trade would be a gift and probably just make the price of the new car go up.

That said, it is still a Lexus, so selling it yourself would be the far wiser decision. I think Shifty has the right idea. Although $2500 asking and $2k taking sounds more realistic, you could shoot for $2995 and see what happens. Maybe a blind man will take it as is.

    Good evening.

I have a silver 2014 Acura MDX AWD w/ Tech Package with 26k miles. Some minor dings here and there but otherwise good condition. It is a lease set to expire in July, 2016 with a monthly payment of $617.

The residual value on the lease contract is $32,600.

I'm wondering if I should (1) return it, or (2) buy it out (if it is worth it and considered a good deal).

    Thanks in advance!

Right now, its worth about $36k trade and $40k retail. So you have about $2500 in payments plus $32.6k residual. $35k is a good deal for you if you like it. Or, if moving on, sounds like you could trade now and have about $1k equity to use towards something else.

i don't know what the numbers will look like in July.

Never underestimate the Lexus name. Same with Toyota Pickups. I've seen old ones sell for prices I didn't think possible. Of course I might be thinking California, not Michigan.

That Lexus is the type of car someone buys off craigslist, puts a plate on it, but doesn't register or insure it.

Hi - looking to trade or sell my 2006 Nissan Murano SL AWD, one owner, 75k miles, fully loaded. I'm on Long Island, NY. It was in an accident years ago, about 3k worth of damage that was repaired, no frame or front end damage.
I was looking at the new Murano and Subaru Outback. At Nissan they offered $7000, at Subaru $6000. I ended up ordering the Subaru (more cargo space, better gas mileage, heated rear seats, all other options were the same). Now I have 12 weeks to decide whether to take the $6000 or try to sell privately.
I do see 2006 Muranos on craigslist for 7-10,000. Will the accident I had hurt my re-sale value to a private buyer? Otherwise, car is in excellent condition.
    Thanks!
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
Well I think you are leaving money on the table if you take $6K for it. I think the low miles offsets any concern about an old fender-bender. Unless the CARFAX says "airbag deployed" or "frame damage", it's my opinion that after a certain age, 10 years or so, an accident record reflecting some sheet metal damage just doesn't matter very much anymore.

I don't see why you couldn't make yourself another 2 or 3 thousand dollars selling privately, if the car is as nice as you say. I bet most of the ones you've seen at $7-10K are higher miles cars, sometimes double the miles you have.

    @xwesx,
You absolutely correct, the transmission does not give a good driving experience.
It was a good car for my Mom at the time.
The Malibu she had before it was just too big for her.
The Fiesta was easy for her to drive and park and she never complained about it using gas, although she thought the seat was too firm and she didn't like the way it shifted, so she only drove it if she really needed to.

murano - the trade offers are definitely solid. They don't seem to be dinging you for the bad carfax. Thing is, I could buy one without the bad history for $10k retail, so I'd personally be looking to pay $8k for yours if I was a shopper. Most people aren't like me, though. I'd say shoot for $9495 and take the first $8500 that comes along.

Fiesta - the miles are crazy low, of course. Even with the touching up it needs, I'd think this should be a solid $7k-$7500 trade, low $8s auction value, and $11k retail.

Not an expert here... but Edmunds TMV (FWIW) shows $21,800 for a new 2016 LX automatic in your area. Additional 3,500 seems like a very fair price to pay for a new car that is 3 model years younger, but that's my opinion.
  • henrynhenryn Member Posts: 4,289
Why wouldn't you just buy a new one? Truecar is showing a new 2016 Accord LX for $20,214 (after $250 for being an Amex member). You're talking about a car that is 3 years old, and you're only saving 15%? Those numbers just don't add up for me.

Going to agree with other comments on making a lower counter offer on the 2013 Accord . Otherwise buy a 2016 model. There are deep discounts right now.

In Houston you will be able to buy a 2016 lx model Invoiced at $21,893 for 20k plus taxes and dealer doc fee. If you wait til the last 2days, last day in March then start negotiating with dealers you may be able to get one cheaper than 20k. . March is the End of the 1st sales quarter and will pay dividends if you wait .

It currently has 185k miles. If I could get around 2-2.3k I think I would be happy. What do you guys think?

The car is blue with black leatherette interior. On the inside it is actually clean for the miles. The outside has small rust on one fender( less than a dollar bill) and the small chips on the hood. It certainly does not look like a car approaching 200k. The tires have good meat on them but could use an alignment. It is located in Boston.

I'm with Q on this---whatever the dealer says, say "Fine". The car owes you nothing. You could probably get a bit more on Craigslist but for cars in this price range, it's kinda dicey exposing yourself to the unique features of this particular market.
  • steine13steine13 Member Posts: 2,825
It's tax season, the car has leather (close enough), someone will pay $2900 for it, guaranteed.

What shifty says about the pain & suffering of dealing with the buyers is also correct.
Careful vetting over the phone helps, in my experience.

We never talked about the transmission that I could see -- if a stick and it good shape, I would consider it myself and certainly pay $2. The old rule of $0.10/mile -- will this car last another 20k miles without major expense?? -- applies here. There's no guarantee but if it's taken care of, there's a decent chance.

This kind of car, a factor of three between trade-in and retail sounds about right.
    Cheers -Mathias

It depends on what the dealer offers. I wouldn't endure the agony of Craigslist for $500, but I might for an additional $1500.

I'm sure he's going to sell it to one of these types of dealer:

"No credit? BAD credit? Are you legally dead? WE DON'T CARE! Buy here, Pay here, at Down-the-Road Motors!"

So if you trade it for $1K you're probably leaving a grand on the table--not a gold mine here.

. A new Cruze under 10k in your future, perchance, if you are still ok with a base vehicle?

Just to close the loop here... as the resident cheapskate, i *am* still OK with a base vehicle.
I'd'a loved to get a car with cruise control, but there weren't any in a 100-mile radius with a stick.

Even with the LS, they had to go 115 miles to Cadillac, MI to find me a manual car... in bright red, no less. It's growing on me; I've never noticed how EVERYTHING is now black, gray, silver, dark blue... so it's different.

In the interest of monthly-payment-golf -- or is that limbo? -- the final numbers worked out to sign & drive, $190/month, first payment made by GM, and then subtract the GM Card discount. It comes to $44/month. If I don't lease again or buy another GM product at turn-in, there's a turn-in fee that raises the total to $60/month. Merci, mon general!

I will report if/when the Subaru has sold.

That's cool.. I guess to get the true imputed value, you'd have to know how much you sacrificed over using a credit card with 1% cash back, over the time you accumulated your GM points.

    Either way... really cheap

You are really tempting me to get one of these GM credit cards.
