Yeah a little fuzzy math on my part, but hey at least that's be 1.5 tanks of regular unleaded for the Ody ;)
  • heywood1heywood1 Member Posts: 851
I was just thinking the opposite, and noticing that Ody street prices (by-and-large) have already fallen below MSRP--and within just one month of its introduction. I'm sure Honda salespeople were hoping for a return of those heady times back in 2000. Even the '04 Sienna held MSRP for about six months (or longer) after intro.

    nag,

I'd be interested in joining you, but I'm looking for a 2005 Touring with NAV in Redrock Pearl. Since it's a different model than yours I don't know if we would be able to join together. I live in Scripps Ranch.

I quit looking and took possession of the Slate Green EX-L. I ordered in August when the color charts came out. Once again for the seventh year in a row I paid MSRP I wish I had known about the Edmunds forumns a few years ago. Boy when I go in to the dealer for my 2006 and he offers me MSRP again will he be shocked when I suggest a price much lower than what I have been paying. I always thought MSRP was a fair price. Boy what an education this forumn has given me.I will go to Tennessee or even Mass. to try and get a deal like psuwife (Post #6527) got for her 05.I will visit the grandchildren while up there also so I will try to kill two birds with one stone.Dex what dealer in Tenn. do you know who has a good price on their Odys?

After the initial rush of "must have" buyers...inventory is beginning to build. Dealer's are beginning to break MSRP(offer discounts). The best deals are on the Touring without NAVI/DVD. Socal dealers seem to have plenty of non-NAVI models. Tourings w/NAVI&DVD are available. EXL's with N/D are least common as we all figured. Inventory is building fast so there will be no 1999-2000 pricing. Prices will drop with each new shipment as more and more units remain unsold at MSRP and above.
Interestingly Sienna seems to sell to "toyota faithful" as Ody seems to sell to "honda faithful" in the main. Sienna is also keeping the pressure on for Ody prices to drop!

I picked up my Ody today with a touring - I had previously written about the prices in Seattle over MSRP, which you concur with. However, it is good to know that the dealer in Moses Lake is offering Ody for MSRP less $500. Do you know if they are dealing the same on the Touring.
The best deal I got was from Tony Robertson in Seattle and that was for over MSRP. However, the sales experience was great and quick. I love the car.

Fredf3, I am still negotiating with this Northern California dealer. I'd prefer to buy closer to home, so I haven't closed the deal yet. As soon as the deal is done I will post information.
  • pen101pen101 Member Posts: 238
dulnev, as of yesterday, my post regarding auto club, costco and cars direct pricing is correct in my zip code. I wish it were not.

Closest dealer to me is at $1500 over and would not budge. Next closest (5 miles away) is at MSRP and won't budge.

We will be leasing, and I notice that each dealer is also playing with the money factor and residual amount. The Northern California dealer I mentioned earlier wants to give me a higher money factor and a lower residual than the local dealer, so the monthly payment gap is not as extreme.

The price had me worried for some time. But somebody down in Arkansas was offering the same price. Like I said, I will write out a full report as soon as I get the van. It is to be built tomorrow... I had told them that I read/write to edmunds.com and odyclub.com.

Now I am in a position to just sit down, twiddle my thumbs and hope that the deal works out exactly the way it was written on the fax they had sent me! He said they could send it on a trailer. He even offered to meet us half way from his dealership. We want to make sure that all goes well and preferred that we meet him in Cheshire and pay him the full amount for the exact van that we had ordered. The price on the purchase order is $35,558.

I stopped looking a month ago since I was so frustrated at the high prices of the Ody. At the time, I read in this forum that there was a dealer in Knoxville offering the Ody at around $1k+ below MSRP. The same dealer apparently had a Touring on e-Bay as well. I cannot remember the dealer name. I did not contact the dealer as I did not want to go to TN and thus cannot say for sure whether it was real. My instincts tell me it was real because the person/poster seemed very credible.

Purchased 05 LX last Tuesday (10/19/04) in Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex area. Price was $500 under MSRP and included mud flaps, cargo tray, wheel locks and extra front window tinting. Rubbed on three dealers over a week to get price down. Missed chance to negoiate out dealer inventory tax: $51.84,and "Road and Bridge/Deputy Fee": $15. Note that two options are available for Honda-Care 7year/100,000 mile coverage: 0% or $50 deductible. Negoiate 0% for the lower-priced $50 deductible. Good luck.

You can always fly to PIT or EWR for about $200,
buy the car in NJ for MSRP, or in PA for MSRP-500 and drive it home.
  • inky4inky4 Member Posts: 238
Went ahead and bought the van for the standard $500 discount with $49.50 DOC fee from local Honda dealer Mark Roberts Honda, Bartlesville, OK north of Tulsa--they have entire inventory on line and priced with a one price strategy. You all may remember them as the famous $316 over invoice on Odyssey that many of us bought in 1999--a deal Honda Corporate did not like I am told. Nor did local dealers. Negotiation only on 04s is how they are set up. They have tourings in stock and some others coming in. They give the best deal because no ordeal. Anyhow, Slate with Olive RES and NAV built this week and coming in a few weeks. Yes, prices will get better but I sold my ride privately and have no time to wait.

"The Northern California dealer I mentioned earlier wants to give me a higher money factor and a lower residual than the local dealer, so the monthly payment gap is not as extreme."

Higher money factor plus lower residual = higher lease payment. So I don't understand your comment about the monthly payment gap. Am I missing something?

When I leased my '04 EX-L over Labor Day weekend, I got a 2 year lease with a money factor of 0.00099 and a residual of $19,126. I negotiated a selling price of $25,072, so the van is only costing me $219/mo (main reason why I went with an '04 vs. waiting for an '05). If my money factor was higher but my residual was also higher, then my payments might have been the same, but then the value of the car at the end of the lease would have been overinflated. Similarly, if the money factor was lower but the residual was lower, I would have also paid about the same, however then the car would be worth more at trade-in than it would cost me to purchase it, in which case I would buy the car and sell it to someone else and pocket the difference.

I am planning on purchasing 2005 Odyssey EX leather with NAV/RES and am concerned about getting the run-around on the warranty. The last time I purchased a new car was the 1999 Durango and had been told prior to not get suckered into any extended warranties. Do I wish I would have not listened to that advice. Obviously this is not a chrysler, but number 1 should I get extended warranty? Secondly, if yes what package/warranty term and for how much should I pay? I have read in the past on this board that some have bargained for there warranties. Please give me some advice.

Read in earlier msgs. (#6527) re. Bedard Bros. Honda in Mass. offering 05 Odys at $950 above invoice. Checked it out and it's true. However, my local Honda dealer says it's probably a Canadian vehicle and thus will NOT have a U.S. warranty. My dealer is near Detoit and says some folks moved to Det. from Canada with their Canadian warranty and it can't be honored in the U.S. Also, Mass. is a different region and dealers around here are sticking with MSRP. Would appreciate any comments.

Honda USA won't honour Canadian Odysseys imported to the US, absent special circumstances.

Should be easy enough to verify the VIN with the Mass dealer, eh?

We bought a silver EX-L with Nav and DVD over the weekend and are extremely happy with it. We went through the internet department at Honda of El Cerrito (half hour from San Francisco), and negotiated a price before we ever saw the van. Probably could have waited and got a better deal, but I was anxious to get it. We paid $500 under MSRP. Break down was $34,210, plus $45 doc fee, $2483.49 tax, $278 license fee, $5 tire fee, $28 elec fee. Total out the door $37049.49. Funny how on a purchase this expensive it ends up being the sales tax that bugs me:)

To those of you considering Bedard Bros Honda in Mass. I can give you my highest recommendation to do business with them. I picked up a new '05 slate green Odyssey EX from them on friday Oct. 22 and am home here in Ohio enjoying my new flawless ride. I exchanged a couple of e-mails with them, one phone call, a couple of overnight mails to handle the paperwork and I flew in and was met at the airport by the dealerships driver and three hours later was driving home. Very nice people to deal with and everything on the up and up. By far my easiest car buying experience ever! $950.00 over invoice. $50.00 doc fees. Full American warranty. (post 6558) My Cleveland,OH area dealers still think it is 1999 again and are still trying to get full MSRP. I love the way the internet levels the playing field!

I recommend Bianchi Honda, Erie, PA. They are a large Western PA dealer with a large monthly allottment. Just ordered an '05 Ocean Mist EX-L, priced $1000 above invoice. I will have to travel out there to pick it up, but price (savings) made it well worth it (Phila. area dealers all "coindentally" and "independently" locked in at MSRP, with varying amounts of standard dealer add-ons). Contact me for the good sales guy info via email.

Good to see you did so well. However, see post #6552 (which references Jay Honda in Cleveland) - it appears as though you could have avoided the trip to MA.
  • pen101pen101 Member Posts: 238
Bryan, sorry I was not clear. The Northern California dealer is offering the car at $1K below MSRP. However, the money factor (interest rate) is higher and the residual amount remaining (what the car may be worth at lease end) is lower than a local dealer who will sell the car to me for MSRP but give me a lower (better) money factor and a higher residual amount. The bottom line is that the monthly payments are not all that different. That is why I have not jumped at the Northern California deal as yet. But I am still working on it.

This is part of the reply from the sales mgr from Jay in my last e-mail from him..."The 2005 Odysseys are better than ever before. Many dealers are getting
thousands over the sticker price. Our philosophy is to sell them for the
suggested retail and not add any dealer charges. We are Ohio's volume
leader and check our prices regularly against our competitors.
I'd be happy to discount an Odyssey a few hundred dollars just to show that
I'm not being stubborn."....I guess the good deals must be on the cars they put up for E-bay auction only. By the way according to their website inventory they have 19 '05 Odysseys gathering dust on their lot.

Host: How would I know from the VIN where it was made? Which number or alphabet should I keep my eyes open for? It is a vehicle being bought in the US for the US market. I wasnot sure if Honda still had a factory in Canada making Odys?

I think the van on eBay had about 100 miles on it, so maybe Jay Honda was just looking to move it. I received a quote a couple weeks ago from them for $1,500 off an EXL-R&N, but they did not respond to a follow up email. Based on your email, maybe their pricing policies have changed recently.

I have researched eBay motors from time to time. Folks be sure to READ THE FINE PRINT CAREFULLY. The '05 Odysseys I have looked at lately said that particular car was sold already but the seller had a few more left and they did not list any VINs. As a general rule I would be wary of any listings without a VIN.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
It's really not where it was made so much as what market it was built for - lots of Odysseys are made in Canada for export to the US and that's fine. An Odyssey built for the Canadian market will have different standard features and the odometer will be in kilometers. If a US importer changes the odometer to miles, I understand that a mileage statement has to accompany the title.

Getting the VIN may help initially before you actually see the vehicle. Sorry I wasn't clear about what to do with the VIN - you can run a CARFAX with it or ask a friendly service manager to verify the car's history:

What dealer and salesperson gave you this $750 below MSRP deal? I wanna see if I can get the same deal and if they have the color I'm looking for. I'm in OC, but don't mind the drive to San Diego if it's going to save me some $$$.

If the VIN starts with a 4, its made in the US and if it starts with a 2, its made in Canada

    Foxb11,

Just to help you out Residual values can not be manipulated by a dealership, except for miles. residuals are determined by these factors.

Term: Shorter the term the higher the residual is.

Model/Trim Level: The less options it has the higher the residual. For an example an 05 Odyssey LX will have a higher residual then a Touring R&N. But a Touring and an EX-L R&N will probably be the same.

Regional: Some states have different money factors and residuals, but they are probably the same all throughout California.

Specials: Sometimes the residual will be exagerated from American Honda finance and a dirt cheap money factor. The terms are usually limited to 24 or 36 months max. Don't believe the 05 odyssey enjoys any special finance programs.

Other Banks: Chase, Bank of America, etc also have leasing, but there residuals are usually not as attractive for the dealer or the consumer. The manufactuers credit branch will usually be what values they use.

    Miles:***********Important*************

This is where I think your variation lies between the 2 dealerships. One dealer is giving you a residual value that is based on 12,000 miles which will be 2% higher then the other dealer who is telling you a lease with 15,000 miles. You need to ask that question to the dealer. The one with the lower money factor and a higher residual is probably quoting you the standard 15,000 mile plan from honda. get his lower money factor and tell him to drop the mile restriction to 12,000 miles per year and I bet you will have the same residual and now a lower money factor. Let me know how it goes.

I bought my Odyssey and a Pilot from Ebay/Jay Honda. When I went through the process they explained that their pricing is based on availability, color, and model and changes accordingly. The listed price on Ebay was the price I paid, the following week the price had gone up 500.00 dollars. The next auction it came down. I suspect you just need to watch. I also was interested in the VIN question, they are not Canadian cars, they said it was due to the fact that the vehicles are for sale at the same time on there lot and that they can't ensure that the vehicle will be there by the end of auction. When I contacted the dealer they did provide me with the VIN. Maybe this helps clarify.
  • strawboss1strawboss1 Member Posts: 14
Here in Kingwood, Texas, outside of Houston, I inquired on a 05 Honda Ody Touring and LX, and was quoted, via the interet, sticker price, plus the VIN etching (rip off). However, they are dealing a bit on the 2 04's that they still have on the lot.

Bummer-had my heart set on a 05 with a little discount, but now I guess I'll be among those waiting.

Also, I have been to the dealer and have driven the 2 04's and the 2 05's they have on the lot.

That's a pretty high-end neighborhood what with all the strict zoning requirements and bike paths everywhere. Some of the best camouflaged grocery stores and gas stations I've ever seen! Maybe you need to widen your list of dealers.

I guess I could widen my net, but I've heard such great things about their service and I guess I'm a little skittish about buying somewhere else and asking a different place to service it. Plus, I actually like the salesman! Lame logic, but I'm just getting started on my search.

Yeah, they don't call Kingwood "The Liveable Forest" for nothing.....
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
Good salespeople can be hard to find. If it helps, most service departments are run separately from sales so the service writer may not know or care where you purchased your van. Good luck in your search.

I suspect the dealer was not clear with me. I plan to get clarification tomorrow. Interesting, I have pretty much blanketed the entire Southern California area over the last 2 weeks and found dealers just won't go much below MSRP. Some still insist on $1500 OVER or more. However, I am working with one Northern California dealer at $1K under MSRP and I found one Southern Cal dealer at almost that amount. I also have one dealer that insists he can match anyone's price, yet he is at $1500 over MSRP. We will see. I'm still working on the deal. As soon as my deal is done (hopefully this week or next), I will post the names of the dealerships). By the way there are a few hold ups on the potential deal, such as availability of a color and does that dealer have that color in an upcoming allocation.

I have been going back and forth between the Ody Touring and the Sienna LTD for some time now and have changed my mind countless times. I finally bought a 04 Sienna LTD last night. If the Touring did not have PAX or if the EX/L had a power tailgate, I would have bought the Ody. Nonetheless, I want to share my findings for anyone who is looking to buy an Ody or Sienna in GA or north FL. I did most of the leg work via e-mail but found that you have to prod and have a few iterations before you get a solid price Please note that the doc fee at the dealers below is around $400 which is typical for GA. Also all my dealings were with the internet dept at the dealers I mention below and none of them pushed me to buy any accessories.

    Sienna.
In the southeast, most dealers have what is known as Toyoguard which is an utter waste of money and retails at around $699. I bought my 04 Sienna FWD LTD from the internet person at Cherokee County Toyota for a few hundred under invoice (invoice is around $32.2k for the 04)+ doc + tt. It was painless and a pleasure to deal with them. The great thing about them is that none of their vans have this Toyoguard which brings the price down.
If I was willing to drive about 3 /1/2 hours south of Atlanta to Albany, GA, the best deal all round was at Fairway Toyota via their internet dept. They only have 05 Siennas and will sell them very close to invoice (invoice is around $32.6k as per carsdirect). They were very responsive via e-mail and I would have bought from them if I went the 05 route. They do have some of their Siennas without Toyoguard which is great. Definitely the best deal in GA for an 05.

    Ody
Metro Atlanta is not great and you get a few paltry dollars below MSRP. However there is a dealer in GA that smokes the other dealers. If one is prepared to travel south a little over 4 hours from Atlanta to Brunswick (the dealer there is Nalley Honda), they will sell the 05 Ody at around $1800-1900 below MSRP via their internet dept. The internet person was great and I would most definitely have bought my Ody from them if I landed up going for an Ody. He gave the facts as they were as objectively as any dealer I have ever dealt with. He also offered to drive the Ody to me in Atlanta. If you are buying in GA or north FL, definitely check them out. I would have flown there on Delta from Atlanta for a little over $100 and then driven the car back.

    Financing
CostCo rocks. Thru their auto program they hooked me up with Capital One and I got a rate of 2.64%. There were 3 provisions: It needed to be a 3 year or less term, I needed to do direct debit out of my account and there was a one time $65 fee. I took this out about 2 1/2 months ago and they granted me one extension at the same rate. Not sure what the rate is now.

    Auto Ins
Again, for me CostCo Ins program hooked me up with Amex Ins and I did my home and car thru them and the rate was great.

Bottom line after all my research is that if one does not care about the power tailgate, I think the best buy is definitely the Ody EX/L or EX if you do not like leather. However if the power tailgate is a must and you are not crazy about PAX, then, welcome to my world !!

Thanks to everyone on this board for great information regarding Ody prices. In the end I paid MSRP with no doc/dealer fees. Neither of the two local dealers had an exl res/nav so one dealer got our Van from Virginia.

I would have bargained harder but:
    1. Want the van for a trip to Florida next week
    2. Saleswoman goes to our church - which complicates things

I paid $900 for the extended warranty. Is that a good deal?
