I just purchased a new '05 Exl w/Res from a dealer in Renton, Wa. I have not received the vehicle yet (2weeks) but I did process all the paperwork. I bought their extended warrenty with a $50 deductible for 6yrs or 75k. They charged me around $1300 for this. Having not bought an extended warrenty before I am not sure if this is a good value or not.
Anyone have a suggestion as to whether or not I should keep this? Thanks,
I use http://www.vtec.net/dealers/
to locate Honda dealers, is there a better tool?

I purchased the warranty from my dealership (Stevens Creek Honda)for $1900. This is the HondaCare for 7yr/100k miles with $0 deductible. The price increase is due to the fact that this warranty has a dealer buy-back clause. If I don't have any warranty work claims between the original warranty and when the extended warranty expires, the purchase price is fully refundable.
I called them this past friday. They told me the same info as what psuwife and icecream posted: $950 over invoice, $50 doc fee, will take care (for free) of NYS registration before we come to pick up the car, and even give a full tank of gas free. However, they will not have any available until 4-6 weeks later.
Last Saturday we visited a local dealer to have another test drive. This time, we took both Ody EX (we are looking for a EXL but the dealer had only EX) and Sienna XLE out and two of us switched cars during the test drive - just to remove any last doubt on whether we are 100% sure to go with Ody. The result: we are sure we will go with Ody. The dealer seemed willing to give a little off the MSRP, but not a lot (they would give more if we take any off their lot on this last business day of October - they had 8 EX available but I want a sunroof and leather).
So I am now inclined to give Bedard Bros. a try.
Any insight and/or recent experience with them are appreciated.
Thanks to all who contributed to a good purchase.
Speaking of Fletcher Honda, I know several people bought at $500 over invoice plus $99 there, but I had a horrible experience with them and would not waste a single phone call dealing with them. The sales person I heard several others mention on odyclub.com NEVER returned my calls one single time. Of the eight or so times we spoke, I called him. He initially agreed unequivocally to sell me a van at $500 over invoice and then the fun started. Apparently their GM got fired and the new guy refused to allow him to honor deals he had made. One of the owners then told him it was OK to honor committments to me and to others and then to "tone it down". Then, I spoke to the sales guy again trying to get him to take a deposit and he told me that when a van he had ordered for someone came in, it was "taken away from him" by management and sold to someone else for more money. I sent a letter to the owners asking for written confirmation as to whether I would be sold a van at the agreed upon price and got NO response. I quit wasting my time with those morons and bought from someone who said what he meant and did what he said.
Lastly, if anyone is looking for a Touring with NO RES or NAVI, Ed Voyles Honda told me last week that they were "heavy" in tourings and would sell at $500 over invoice - not sure about add ons, etc., but a heck of a price on a Touring. Last Wed., Ed Voyles had 15 or so vans. The dealer I bought from gave me a good price on the EX-L RES but said he could not have discounted a touring that much - guess it all depends on what is selling locally and what the dealer has in stock.
BTW, we love the van. I am still learning the features, but so far it is everything we were looking for.

I have inked a deal with Bedard for an 05 exl with dvd & nav. $950 over invoice, $50 doc fee. Everything seems to be on the up and up so far. Won't be ready until mid November, but that's not a problem for me. The Sales manager seems to be a straight shooter. Of course, this is all theoretical right now because I have not actually picked up the car. So, all I can say is so far so good. What I can say for sure is that I could'nt sniff this price in NY/NJ. I have no problem driving 3 hours to save the money. I'll post again after my next contact with them.
Thanks for the message!
Buyers beware one of the guys in Internet Sales at Hardin Honda. The guy just wants to get you in the door even though he does not have the car nor is it allocated to them! I basically called most, if not all, local dealers in SoCal to find out who has or who is getting the Ody in the color I want, so I knew this much. He calls and leaves me a message saying "I have great news about the Ody you're looking for". So, I call up. First of all, he doesn't know me from Joe. He says, what are you looking for? I said an Ody, trim this, color that. Punches a few keys and says we don't have it, but I can get it. All I need you to do is come in and put in a $500. deposit. I said, so, "you guys are getting it in?" His response, "yea, we'll get it in a couple of days". So, I probe deeper. "So, you have an allocation due to you in a couple of days?" His response, "no, but i can pull from our general bank".
What BS is he trying to pull here??? As far as I know, each dealer gets an allocation. If they have a customer come in and wants a different color and/or trim, they've gotta trade either what they got or what they're expecting to get.
Needless to say, I won't be buying my vehicle from this bozo!
Can't believe their pricing. Very Difficult to get a hold off. Very Busy as you can imagine.
In Virginia Beach, prices are at MSRP to $ 500 Below, except for dealers like Hall, who add on bogus "Window Etching" to their pricing.
They are so behind in catching up to their emails, and since I can be patient I can get a great price.
Honda Odyssey is an excellent Van, but not at MSRP or higher. Too many good vans out there.
Dealer "add ons", are just a way of Dealer making
profit. Pure and simple.
After all, isn't Honda supposed to be reliable?
So, you bet. I made the dealer some good money. Yet I'll bet money that without a bumper-to-bumper extension, I would have otherwise spent $2k (I spent 2K on an extended warranty) or more during the upcoming 7 years and 100k on the vehicle.
I'll sleep tight about my car for at least the next 7 years.
Thanks!!
Good Luck.
Then again, I guess it can be hard to put a price on piece of mind.
I will say this about Honda - although their warranty is not the best around, they did stand behind their product ('99 Ody) when the transmission failed just out of warranty at 40K. And that was before there was a generally (or at least publicly) recognized problem with the Ody transmission.
Any ideas?
Thanks!
Thanks
One factor was that I was preapproved by my bank at 5.05 percent. The dealer got me 3.9 percent for my loan. My absolute break limit was $2k for a warranty - above that no way. But since I'm saving money from a lower interest rate than I expected to pay, I threw in the dealer warranty. I suppose I could have saved $700 with the nondealer warranty, but it was a wash overall. Having owned 2 other new cars over the prior year-and-a-half has convinced me that while a car may be reliable and run for many years - the new electronic gadgets, auto doors, seat heaters (A new car of mine actually burned a hole through the seat from the seat heater), etc. are prone to breaking. I would bet money that I will break even or save money by spending a $2k for the warranty. I see it as setting aside money for repairs. I for one recommend extended warranties on new cars.
Late on Friday night, I decided that I wanted my wife to have her new van which we had been waiting for for 6 weeks and to move beyond the incessant fretting over "best" deals and to round out our new car with a good warranty. We were so satisfied with the color, feel, and accessories of our van.
She has been all smiles ever since.
Where do you plan to buy? I have a deposit with Norm Reeves in Cerritos, expecting my EX-L RES/NAV to come in about 11/15.
I had received a written quote for $500 below MSRP from Charmichael Honda, but they did not have the van I wanted–EXL Navi RES.
At Honda of Vacaville, I was told they only do MSRP on my first visit. On my second visit to look at an EXL Navi RES in Sage Brush Pearl with olive interior, I was promptly told that they would price match for $500 below. After looking over the van for a few hours and calling my 8-month pregnant wife to view the interior color, I went to discuss a deal. The salesman then told me that van was not for sale as it was “pre-contracted for” and another salesman had forgotten to list it on the board. I was then told that I could pre-contract for MSRP because he was mistaken about price matching. He told me they did sell an EX for $500 below, but only because it had been on the lot for 21 days and why would he sell me a Navi model for below MSRP when he could easily sell it for more. I told him because he promised me that price and I just wasted several hours looking over a van that I could not buy. He said it was MSRP only.
I then called Autowest Honda in Roseville and learned that they had a Navi in Slate Green. I told the internet manager that I had been quoted $500 below MSRP and after he talked to his sales manager, he agreed to match it. I drove up there (about 40 miles) and he stated that he could do the deal for $5 below MSRP. I thought he was joking and said $500 below. He said it was $5 below and he thought that was fine because I said I would not pay MSRP. Who buys a $34,000 car and wants $5 off?!? And why would he need to check with a sales manager to do that?!? Needless to say, I immediately left.
By then, my wife had called Manly Honda in Santa Rosa (70 miles) and they quickly agreed to sell for $500 below MSRP. They put the van through PDI and detailed it while I was on my way. After a thorough inspection and test drives, they cleaned the van up while I did the paperwork in one hour. While they did try to sell me useless items (vehicle etching, leather guard, extended warranty), they were very low pressure.
I have enjoyed this bulletin board and have learned great information from it. Please benefit from my experiences and DO NOT BUY from Vacaville Honda and Autowest Honda in Roseville. They tried to pull their dirty tricks to get me to invest my time and energy at their dealership and then change their prices–the old bait and switch. When I called them on it, they could care less because they take the attitude that there are hundreds of potential customers out there. Please help me to let them know that Odyssey customers are smarter than that.
BTW, the van is awesome!!!
I FINALLY worked out a deal with Family Honda in Rancho Santa Margarita. They gave me more for my trade than anyone else within a 50 mile radius, so I decided to go with them. I paid slightly above MSRP (+ $40.), but the EX-L I purchased came with wheel locks, mud flaps, and cargo tray (worth approx $289. retail). In addition, they threw in lifetime free oil changes. Yea, it'll take me about 30 mins to get to the dealer to get my oil changes, but plan to make a morning of it and grab breakfast when they do my oil changes. So, hopefully, that'll be worth a little bit if I keep the Ody for a long time.
It's suppose to arrive any day now, so I'll post again when I get it!
I was about to deal with Cerritos, but the Internet Salesperson (male) I spoke to kinda ticked me off. He's the one that called me after I left him a message. He told me that the Ody I was looking for was in transit and was expected this past weekend and that if I wanted to put a deposit to make sure I was first on the list. I asked if anyone else was on the list, then he gave me the big brush off saying that for him to even check if there was on the list for this Ody, that I would have to give him a deposit! Therefore, I passed on Norm Reeves.
Because of this whole ordeal of trying to purchase a Ody, I now have a long list of salespeople that I will not purchase from. Don't these idiots think? They are all just looking for the current sale. Not even thinking that you may purchase another vehicle in the near future or that you will refer other people to them!
The token discount on hot cars is always $300 to $500. I mean a deal where they only make about $4000 as opposed to $4300! But most dealers will give the $500 off just to make everyone happy and make customer feel better.
INKY
I gave the F&I guy the $1085 number and he agreed to match it. After everything was signed I asked what his cost was, $895. Don't know if that is true (didn't see it with my own eyes), but I was happy overall getting the best price I had seen and he still made his profit.
Somebody mentioned asking to see the dealer cost and offer $100 over it, sounds like a good plan.
I had not booked the vehicle in advance, but talked to the sales manager over the phone and finalized the deal before I went there.
Nice people, nice location and overall, a nice buying experience. It was a 150 mile hike, but worth it. In fact, they offered to deliver the vehicle to my door step at no extra cost, but I did not feel confortable with that. If I buy from them again, I might take them up on that offer.
This is a great forum. Thanks to everyone who posted their experiences.
Good Luck.
ASM.
Best regards!
This would make it worth a trip from Los Angeles CA.
Thanks
Joe
I would recommed El Cerrito Honda. Great experience. All negotiations done over Email. I talked only once to fix the appointment for delivery. Very pleasing Internet Sales Person. No haggle at all. I requested and he added Wheel Locks, Cargo net & tray for free.
The dealership didn't offerred Honda Care Extended Warranty and I will have to shop for it separately now.
This is my first Honda and I am impressed. I have a direct comparision with my Brother's brand new Sienna XLE and both are edge-to-edge. Its come to just the brand name. I almost bought a Sienna myself, but WIFE rules.
"Used" denotes that the vehicle has been titled before. A "used" car may have very few miles on it.
If it had 250 miles on it, it may have been driven as a demonstrator or it could have been driven in from another dealer.
For a truly "new" car, never test driven, you could easily have as low as 4 - 10 miles.
