The sales manager at Dublin was definatly rude, did not get to the SM with Livermore Honda just sales people. However my friend just bought an Odyessy at Livermore and they did have a good experience. In my opinion it depends on who you get, what kind of mood their in and what day of the month you are buying... Just my opionion!!

    Dealer: Wilde Honda, Waukesha, WI
Auto: 2006 Honda Odyssey EX-L, DVD.
Price quote: 28,325.00 (Best Internet quote) $500 below other dealers in region. (let the games begin!)

Trade in: 2003 Honda Accord-very good condx. 34,980 miles
    Trade in value:
    KBB: 15,620
    NADA: 18,750
    EDMUNDS: 16,240
    Average: 17,102

I called dealership in response to email about the internet sales price. I made an appointment to have the car appraised. So I had the day off and drove 24 miles to the dealership. After the appraisal...which took about an hour they indicated the car was worth 14,500.00
I said I needed closer to 17,000 to work with my budget.
They said they might be able to stretch to meet my needs.
Ok, so far. The manager then said he could give me 15,500 max. This was after sitting in the dealership for 2 hours going back and forth, and them actually taking the car for a drive. Finally after more haggling, the manager came out from behind his "hiding place" and 15,500 was all they could give me, because of the resale value. I said no thanks, and that I would just try to sell the car on ebay, or via the local newspaper because it will go for between 19,800 and 18,400. Before I walked out, the salespersons said, maybe he could come up a bit, and maybe if I could input some extra cash, then he could do the deal. So we shook hands and I left the dealership.
So I drove home, another 24 miles. After conversing with my wife, several hours later, I called the salesman back and said.. If you give me 16,200 for the trade -in I can get you a cashiers check for my difference of 800.00 so that I can be where I want to be (17,000 trade in). He now said "I will give you 16,000 for your trade in max, and we have to do the deal tonight. I found the color that your wife wants and I will hold it for you...only if you come in tonight before 9pm. So the wife and I and our tired 2 year old, left the house in a hurry, and drove out to the dealership another 24 miles with the idea that everything was on the up and up. (my life has taught me that if things are going as planned "its probably an ambush) I digress.

    28,325 2006 Odyssey
655 tax (difference between trade in and new car)
    89 Service charge
    69 Tags, etc
    --------
    29,137

I owe 6800 to the lien holder which the dealership offered to pay. So If the dealership gave me the 16000 minus the 6800.00 that is 9200.00

then my $1000 cash-which they indicated I could put on my Mastercard...(because my bank was closed as it was 7pm at night)..

So now with a car price of 29,138... and my downpayment of
10,200, with the lien on the trade taken care of... and with dealer financing of 4.9% on 18937 would be a payment of $356.50....not bad.

So we arrive at the dealership and we are met by the saleswoman, and she says she is prepping the car, but the unthinkable has happened. After the dealership said that without a doubt she would hold the car for us. That was a promise! she said that she forgot to have me put down a $200 hold on the car, someone else put down $200 on the exact car we wanted, while we were enroute to the dealership! But that she had another car on the lot that should meet our specifications, but that it was my wifes third choice of color, and there would be an additional $500 dollar charge, because there was no dealer incentive on it to sell. Of course that news was given by the manager with his best acting skills. So I said, fine....You told me you were going to "hold" a car for me, and I drove out here intending to buy a car. So for your screwup...you 'eat' the 500 or give me 500 on my trade in (16000 +500=16500), and we will look at the car on the lot and if it meets our inspection and test drive, I will do the deal. He would do what he could with his boss...(yea right)...like his boss is actually there at 7pm at night...anyway.
So.....we come in from looking at the car, and they are doctoring up the numbers...and present a piece of paper telling me this will work...

28825 they increased the price of the car 500 to cover
    the dealership incentive..NOT!

and they showed how they were now going to now give me 16000 in trade Which is what the manager agreed to..But with the new price of 28835 They actually showed on the piece of paper that they wanted to give me 15,500 trade in. While increasing the price of the car, they slipped in the old $15500 offer from 6 hours before and pressured me to buy, because now my wife was pissed, and my 2 year old son was starting to wail...very loudly!

My wife now growing increasing pissed off...asked what happend to the 16,000 we agreed to on the trade in...oops they said and off they went into the managers office.
So she comes back out with the price of 28825 plus a trade in of 16000, but now says...without their knowledge...the car they have in lot has the pro-package on it..and thats another $320.00 The pro-package consisted of:
    Mud flaps
    A black Cargo protection unit
    & Wheel Locks

But that they would give us the package for free if we would just eat their dealers incentive of $500 tacked on the price
(28825) So my wife and I said we needed time to talk about it. Actually we didn't talk about it...we used the time to pack up our Son in our stroller. I walked in the managers office, in which the salespersons were sitting with the finance brainyacks...I came here to buy a car in good faith, at a good price, and I really didn't appreciate being jerked around. They indicated they were the biggest Honda dealer in the state...well no wonder! Its hard to be the biggest by being honest...anyway. My wife and I and our now very upset and screaming 2 year old Son, walked out of the dealership...and got into our Accord and drove off.

If it was such an important deal for them, they could have kept the price at the original 28,325 and upped the price on the car that would be on the lot...but the car would probably go to a wholesaler anyway.

The dealership also indicated they would go look at other dealerships...

    Any ideas or suggestions...like I shouldn't go back !!
    thanks...for this awesome forum ....!

I'm certainly no expert on leasing but the numbers (by themselves) don't seem all that great but it sounds as though you've determined the local market.

What's the price of the vehicle and what would your monthly payment be with the same down and financing the balance for 60 months? At the end of that 60 months you'll have equity of probably 10K.

Your entire experience reeks of the old stereotypical car buying debacle. You played right into their hands, and if you don't see that then there's no hope for you!

#1 - Don't go back to that same dealer. They have you pegged and have ZERO respect for you.

#2 - go back a few pages and start reading all the postings. A car buying experience in this day and age of information should be easy and practically care free!

There are plenty of ways to keep car buying as simple as possible. Have you considered selling your car yourself? Don't get conned into number shifting by the dealer - that's exactly what happened in your instance. They played with the new car numbers and your trade in value. Negotiate a deal on a new Odyssey WITHOUT mentioning a trade in. If you really want to trade in your car then bring it in later when all the numbers on the new car are complete.

Don't waste your money on any "protection" or "pro" packs.

bellyup, your posting will soon be deleted because you posted the sales manager's and internet sales manager's names from Marin Honda!

I did the same thing and now my posting is in thin air!

Anyway, I got the same deal as you and highly recommend Marin Honda to anyone looking in the area!

btw, what color did you get?

Hmmm; sounds like a classic case of "bait and switch" or "bait and steal" or something like that. They are taking the "let's-grind-this-person-down-as-much-as-possible-and-for-as-long-as-it
    -takes-to-get-them-to-agree-to-OUR-price-so-we-can-make-a-good-profit" approach to selling cars.

I have three words for you: BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU

Thank you for the reply to my post. I have considered selling the car myself. As I owe money on the lien, I am not sure how to take care of the transaction of the lien, without just paying what I owe on the car off. I did call the lienholder and they said, if I pay off the lien, it would take them 20-40 days to release the lien and send paperwork (CapitalOne). Isn't this a bit long?

Who would buy my car outright with the promise of me to pay the lien off and then send the paperwork to them..clearing the title? How do I go about this??

    thanks.

I don't understand for the life of me why anyone would want to bring a 2 yr old (children for that matter)to negotiate a deal. Test drives, yes, but just send the better half to go for the negotiation afterwards(and of course do your homework first). The car won't be gone if you come back in a couple of hours or the next day.

And if they really need $$ to hold the car, they could have charge your credit card over the phone and you can take your time to get there.
  • nwngnwng Member Posts: 663
that is a long time, did they offer other options, such as wiring the funds, or overnight a certified check? My experience (one time only) had been 2-3 business days after I overnight the bank check to the lender. I did a very detailed bill of sale with the buyer and have the letter notarized

Here are all the prices I got from local dealers via the internet and over the phone for the "best" prices for both the Odyssey EX-L, NAV,DVD and Odyssey EX-L, DVD. Obviously the higher price includes NAV.

Schlossmans Honda City, Milwaukee, WI 30,748/ 28,837

    Boyland Honda Greenfield, WI 30,336/?

Wilde Honda, Waukesha, WI 30,236/ 28325

    Pauly Honda, Libertyville,IL. 31,274/?

MotorWerks, Barrington, IL-Never returned my calls or email.

    Rosen Honda, Gurnee, IL 30,550/?

Gentile Honda, Racine, WI.. Called and asked for internet and or best price and they refused to say... He said whatever price we can agree to would be the price. They also have the highest service fee of $149. The other dealers are between 89 and 99 bucks. I actually called this dealership 2 times and it took the secretary 10 minutes to find someone to talk to. She went thru like 6 people, so either everyone was out making deals, or everybody was out to lunch.
  • icanoeicanoe Member Posts: 5
We were not bringing a 2 yr old child to go negotiate! We were going to go pick up the car. The deal was supposedly done. I asked about a downpayment and they promised they would hold the car until we arrived (45 minutes). The car was being held to be signed. both of us needed to sign for the car. No babysitters. Then the games began. We left, end of story.

I had a buying experience (Odyssey EXL)that seems to be different from most forums noted. The first dealer i went to, they refused to give me the price they offer. After getting my offered price, they asked me repeatedly if I'll certainly buy it if they give me that price and then had me initial signed.. Apparently they had found out that I was still shopping around and just to get a price and use it to get lower price at other dealers. After he talked to his boss, he got me a really low number (3000+ lower than invoice. it was higher than my offer but I wasn't sure if it was good enough since this was the first dealer I went to) and basically no one could beat it. One day later when i found it was indeed a good price and called him again, he simply refused to give me that price.. And again all other dealers were so reluctant to get me their qoutes and simply said go for the first dealer with good price.

My question is how to adjust the buying strategy? If I accepted his offer that other day, would they really offer me that price?

My apologies but I will repost to give Marin Honda in northern CA a little more run. :)

We got Sage Brush w/ Olive.

We completed our purchase of an EX-L RESNAV. Price of 30,688.00 (about
$1000 below invoice) plus tax, title/license, doc fee and CA tire fee.
Our OTD cost was 33,544.22 with a tax rate of 8.25 percent based on
    living in santa clara county.

The Sales People at Marin Honda made it a really nice buying experience.

I bought a Odyssey LX 2006 model (no bells/whistles) silver color, last week. I am in South Bay, CA. I paid 23500 out of the door (Car+Dest+Doc+All DMV charges, 8.25% Sales Tax). I paid 3500 cash and got a loan of 20000 for 36 months at 3.9% APR with a monthly payment of 589.59.
Later on I went back to the dealer and got 7 year 80K miles extended warranty for 955 from "Honda Care". I don't know whether it is good to invest 1K in this or not but felt a sense of comfort as I know that I will be driving this beyond 3yrs/36K miles.

That offer (3000+) under invoice does not sound realistic. One sales guy got offended and told me to stop wasting his time when I offered $1500 under invoice last month, then on the last day of June he called me back to see if I was still interested. My wife and I finally purchased an EXL today in Houston and the best offer we got after several weeks of shopping was just below $27,000. I'm sure we could have at least gone as far as $1000 under invoice but we'd have to settle on a color we didn't really want. Plus we we're satisfied with that price with 4.9% financing.

$955 for the 7year/80K warranty sounds good. is that with a $0 deductible? The dealer we went to wanted $1655 for 6yr/80K warranty and we said no thanks because we knew we could buy the warranty from Honda for cheaper elsewhere. This dealer even quoted me a 8yr/120K extended warranty for over $2500.

Hey guys, I live in New York and am looking far and wide for the best deal on a Honda Odyssey EX. Does anyone have any recommendations and deals that they have received please feel free to point me in the general direction. Did anyone get theirs below invoice, and if so for how much? :confuse:
  • davidd3davidd3 Member Posts: 582
Invoice minus 500 is fairly easy in Westchester County and Greenwich, CT. Breaking that barrier seems difficult, but doable given all the competition in the area.
  • hfzeushfzeus Member Posts: 39
Most Westchester dealers I contacted for an EXL were $700 under invoice (including destination) with one about $1200 under.

In NJ, even with the extra fees they charge, I was quoted about $300 under that.
  • smithsincsmithsinc Member Posts: 15
Does anyone know if there is a better rate of finance out their than the 2.9% APR that Honda is offering right now? Also, does anyone know where I can find a list of all the fees that I should be expecting to see on the sale contract? This will actually be my first automobile and experience buying an automobile, so every bit of information helps gang. Thanks. :)

    >"Most Westchester dealers I contacted for an EXL were $700 under invoice (including destination) with one about $1200 under".

I would appreciate your providing the name of the Westchester dealer quoting $1200 below invoice on a EXL. If it's New Rochelle, I checked and found that their quote did not include destination ($550).

"In NJ, even with the extra fees they charge, I was quoted about $300 under that."

NJ is a bit far and unfamiliar to me. Not worth the venture unless the savings is huge. I'd be financing. A purchase of price of $300 less would barely change the monthly payment on such a large transaction - about $5 on a payment that will be in the $500s.

I got the HondaCare from Mike Pruitt Honda 8yr/120k/0$Ded for $1250. I cancelled my 3rd party warranty from my local dealer and went with this deal which was cheaper and better! E-mail me if you want the guy's e-mail address. He will DHL you the paperwork.

Approached the dealer over internet (email) and followed up by phone. Quote for EX was 24800 and EXL was 26600 (rounded up). On day of purchase it was 24500 and 26500.

Would like to know if buying extended warranty is really worth it and approx price.
  • smithsincsmithsinc Member Posts: 15
Could you say if this dealer is in the New York/New Jersey area, and how to get in touch with him/her? If I can get the EX for 24800 or 24500 I would pull the trigger on this deal. I need to do this by the weekend so your assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    Let's see...

I got a quote for EX cloth 26,400 from Tenafly Honda
Husband's quote from Tenafly for EX cloth 26,250!

Paramus Honda quoted me 25,062 - I believe this is $1,050 below invoice

    Good or Bad?
  • cccompsoncccompson Member Posts: 2,382
There's a separate thread on Honda Extended Warranties here - it should answer your question about prices.

My two cents is that they are only truly worthwhile if you buy an R&N. This is especially true with the longer standard warranty that comes with the '06s.
  • anon2006anon2006 Member Posts: 4
Sure. The dealer is South Bay Honda in Los Gatos, CA. I sent them an internet request for EXL through CarsDirect. I got a prompt response with a quote of $26,588 which was lower than CarsDirect low price! Quote was valid for 3 days but I don't think it mattered. I talked to internet rep on the third day in the morning and showed interest in EXL-DVD but he talked me out of it saying that screen placement was odd and strenuous on the neck for kids (I tried it out, it was strenuous for me). Saved me 1600 on that option!)

I asked for best price over the phone and he quoted 26,488!

I reached the dealership around 7:45PM, he was busy wrapping up with another customer so had to wait a bit. Got talking around 8:15PM and a little back and forth and he lowered the price by another $200 (should mention car had about 100 miles on it, but I didn't mind).

Salesperson was very smart, straight talking. So was the manager. No pressure by Finance guy either.

I would definitely recommend the dealership.

It is New Rochelle. I have it is writing that the quote is inclusive of destination.

Regarding the Jersey side, I assumed there would be more fees. I just learned yesterday that fees not in NY that they charge are less than $200 (extra 50 or so if financing for credit check). That brings the quote to almost 2G's under invoice.

Even with a difference of $300, do not delude yourself into thinking in terms of a low monthly payment. Even in a cash deal, it is $300. For financing, it is considerable more over the life of the loan and it not tax deductable.

"It is New Rochelle. I have it is writing that the quote is inclusive of destination."

New Rochelle was also my lowest quote from Westchester dealers. On July 20 they quoted 26,710 for EXL, about 1,000 less than my next best quote. After quizzing them about what their quote did not include, I found that it did not include 550 for destination. I therefore adjusted their quote to 27,260. I gather that you got a much better quote from them? Please advise.

"Regarding the Jersey side, I assumed there would be more fees. I just learned yesterday that fees not in NY that they charge are less than $200 (extra 50 or so if financing for credit check). That brings the quote to almost 2G's under invoice."

2,000 below invoice! Now I'm interested in possibly buying in NJ. Please provide names/locations of NJ dealers quoting this price level.

"Even with a difference of $300, do not delude yourself into thinking in terms of a low monthly payment. Even in a cash deal, it is $300. For financing, it is considerable more over the life of the loan and it not tax deductable."

Agreed. But as a practical matter, I approach a finance with a different mentality than I would approach a cash deal. On a cash deal, I would look at the total purchase price and see the $300 price difference as substantial. But on a 100% finance, I am focused on the resulting difference in the monthly payment on a 5-year loan, which amounts to peanuts. Although in the fullness of time, I would pay an extra $300 + interest, it's hard to motivate myself to venture into NJ to get a lower price that will reduce my monthly $500+ payment by only $6.

I purchased my 2006 EX Cloth Odyssey at the Pompton Plains, NJ Honda dealer (rt 23 honda) for 25,300. It wasn't until I was about to walk out the door that they made the deal though. It's the Midnight Blue Pearl and it's beautiful. Stay away from Sussex Honda - unprofessional and wouldn't move much on the price.

I just purchased a '06 from Albert Honda. I had a wonderful buying experience. No pressure at all. We looked at many different models. The salesman took his time and explained all the details. We looked at other central Missouri dealers and none were as professional to deal with and competative on price. I saw on this board where someone else had bought an EX-L there for $27,300 OTD. I just told them I wanted that price on the one on the lot. It came from another dealer and had several added options. Mud Guards, Pinstripe and Cargo Tray. He wrote up the deal and I was in and out in 30 minutes. No hassle at all. Would recommend them to any shopper and they are my local dealer so I get 10% off all service. I am very happy with my deal. Thanks to those that post on this board.

Had a very good experience with Honda Riverside. My friend had referred me to them as having the best Honda prices in SoCal and I think it's true. Their internet quote on an EXL w/ RES and NAV was $30,183 - about $1500 below invoice and about $2k below any offer in San Diego. Everyone was professional and courteous, from the internet department to finance. This was by far most straightforward car transaction we've ever had. Paperwork went smoothly - we took advantage of the 2.9% and were out in about an hour.

I think it is a great deal, very similar to what i got here.

I leased an odyssey EX in chicago yesterday(07/29/2006). I got it for $24834 standard no options. I qualified for Tier 2 lease and paid $1000 down which included first month payment + security deposit + lic + admin fee etc. The taxes were rolled into the lease. The payments come out to $421 for 48 month lease. Can anyone please tell me how i did?

  • darla250darla250 Member Posts: 3
Yes, that price included the destination fee. I know when I was shopping I saw a lot more EX Leather than cloth but I specifically wanted the cloth. Good luck!
  • acklarryacklarry Member Posts: 11
After some serious shopping in both Maryland, PA, NJ and finally locally in NY, I got a local dealer to match a price I got in MD.

The price included the $550 destination:

    $30,550 + tax and tags

My numbers aren't exact, but invoice if I recall was $31993 and MSRP was over $35000.

Deal was finalized at Huntington Honda. All of the negotiation was completed over the phone.

Most of my quotes were between $30,700 and $31,000.

Thanks for all the great posts on this forum - I was able to leverage your experiences to this wek match the best deal I saw posted. Here's how it breaks down:

    Price $26,500.00
    Document Fee $45.00
    CA Tax (8.25%) $2,189.96
    License/Reg $239.00
    Tire Recycle Fee $8.75
    Total $28,982.71

I bought it from San Francisco Honda. San Leandro and Oakland were willing to do $26,700. Menlo would match a written quote. Mike Harvey in Burlingame would do 27,700.

Also took the 2.9% financing and put the cash into a 5.1% CD for 36 months. This will result in an additional $1,960 in my jeans as follows:

    CD Interest $4,683.00
    30% Tax -$1,404.90
    After Tax Earnings $3,278.10
    Financing Interest -$1,315.00
    Transaction Profit $1,963.10
