Anyone have some advice to my question(s) above? Some of you have to own SUVs now in the 1998-2001 range and have some experience/advice relating to them.

Please read my post above and offer some assistance.

    Thanks! :)

Sounds like you need good reliable transport. Try finding a used 4Runner. New base Explorers and Jimmy/Blazer can be had for a steal and the interest rate for 2001 Explorers is 0% in some areas. Go to Comsumers Report and check the ratings if you are a member or you can buy their guide at a local bookstore. Good Luck.

I'm looking at a Bravada and was wondering if the "7 wire harness" for the trailer/hitch meant that the vehicle was only pre-wired and needs to be fitted with an adapter, or if was already fitted with the "plug" ready for use. Thanks.
  • alanialani Member Posts: 39
It is ready to go, I have one too, all I did was to get a 7 to 4 adapter for the trailer and that was it. By the way, I don't even know that my Bass boat is behind, just make sure to not to tow till you 1st break it in for 500 mile, then another 500 in 3ed gear.

I think these are very interesting and great vehicles but haven't had the chance to drive one yet. I'm looking at every aspect including colors, and the following question came up. What color is the interior of the following picture? The exterior is pewter metallic but what color is the inside?

Minor detail but one of the things that bugs me on the SLT's Steering Wheel Controls is the addition of Driver Information and Climate Control buttons but the absence of Cruise Control buttons.

Steering Wheel Driver Info is overkill. So is Steering Wheel Climate Control for an Auto Climate Control System!

I've always hated that GM multi function stick where Cruise Control is hidden and confused with wiper/washer controls and signals.

My Bravada has the single CD player - on it, the wheel button does cycle tracks. There may be a setting you can change in the DIC or on the stereo itself to let it cycle tracks with the wheel button instead of discs.

I traded in a '99 Jeep Grand Cherokee for my '02 GMC Envoy on an early lease termination offer from a dealership an hour away from me in Denver. The Jeep was a nice vehicle, rugged and well-built, had a nice body style, good interior, etc. But it'd didn't have the power, room, or towing capacity of the Envoy. I leased a similarly equippled Envoy SLE (minus a power moonroof that my Jeep had, along w/ the brushguard, lighting I had installed)... and when all was said and done, my payments came out to be roughly .75 cents more than what I was paying on my 2.5yr old leased Grand Cherokee... I have friends who have Durangos, Blazers and Exploders... all of which are popular, capable vehicles -- and all have had their share of minor problems. So it really just depends on what vehicle you like personally, and which fits into your insurance budget. (be sure to do your homework insurance wise too) I'd go out on some of the other forums here and ask the owners what they think of their cars and go from there...

Just wondering if the multi function stick is supposed to illumunate when the headlights are on. Mine doesn't and I find it difficult to see at night. Not sure if this is a problem or that was the way it was designed. Other Envoy owners please let me know.

    Greetings all:

I've had my '02 Envoy SLT for a few months (3,300 miles), and it's performed perfectly so far. Yesterday, though, on a left-hand U-turn, with the wheel turned all the way left and brakes lightly applied, I heard an intermittent grinding noise coming from the right front tire area.

I called my GMC service guy and they said this is normal on Envoys when the wheel's turned that hard, and that the parts needed to be greased. I am not alarmed at the moment, based on feedback from the service department and the fact that the car handles fine otherwise. Anyone had a similar experience?
  • vfontvfont Member Posts: 13
The same thing happened to me and the dealer said there were dry grease fittings. Once they greased the joints, the noise went away and everything's been fine since.

I have my share of posts in the topic listed above this one so I need some GM fan input. it's time for my 96 explorer to go. all in all an adequet performer. seating and leg room the best for a larger guy. I have not been much of a GM fan in many years but these new vehicles intrigue me. this in line six loaded with torque and up looks very appealing but what's the thought on investing this much money in a vehicle with an unproven motor. anybody a little scared about this? when ford switched from the push rod v-6 to the SOHC six it turned into a nightmare for people.

Thank you for your post, vfont. I feel better knowing this isn't a big deal. Happy Envoying!

I can't find any info from the brochure on the Bravada that implies that it has a transmission cooler for towing. Does anyone know?
  • lyndellwlyndellw Member Posts: 31
bjp5, your Bravada has a transmission cooler. Look at the bottom of the radiator area. It is the full width of the radiator and about 4" high.

vfont, wonder about the grease fittings. As far as I know from observation, and checking the service section of the manual all joints ,etc are sealed. No grease Zerks.?????

GM will be using 4 and 5 cylinder versions of this inline 6 in other vehicles, so I would have to say that they have invested a huge amount of time and money in this engine. Also, inline motors inherently are more reliable, so I was not afraid to purchase this "new" technology.

Picked up my new 2002 Bravado on the 27th. The Envoy running boards look great on it... in fact, the sales re said they looked better on the Bravado than on the Envoy. Don't know since I haven't seen them on the Envoy. So, for all who've been asking about running boards, my experience turned out well (so far)and I only paid under $200 to have the dealership remove it from one of their Envoys in stock (their idea) and install it.

Now I have a question as well. My Bravado doesn't have a cap covering the hole where a trailer hitch would go. My sales re (in his follow-up call Monday) said the Envoy and Bravado don't come with a cap. Is this true? My neighbor's Toyota 4-Runner has a cap with the Toyota emblem. I'm assuming I can get a cap at Pep Boys or another auto parts store but will it fit? Will it look as nice as the Toyota's?

7 New Sport Utility Vehicles Sustain Big Damage In 5 Mph Bumps

    Quote from article:
"The 2002 Chevrolet TrailBlazer sustained an average of $810 damage in each of the two frontal crash tests. The rear tests did not assess bumper performance because the trailer hitch, sold as standard equipment, absorbed all the crash energy."
"But this result is more an artifact of the institute’s tests than an indication of good bumper design,” said Adrian Lund, the institute’s chief executive. “It’s clear that the TrailBlazer’s rear bumper design isn’t a good one.”

Maybe this is justification for getting one of those bumper guards above...
  • hambone7hambone7 Member Posts: 130
The bumper guards above are actually brush guards and will cause more damage in the event that you hit a pole at 5 MPH. The part of the "brush guard" across the grill will be crumpled into the grill and hood. They are used more for appearance than anything else.

Here is my experience with new TB>

    Chronology of TrailBlazer
    1) Called Dealer 7/18 to find out where was TB since it was reported to be in Cincinnati a couple weeks ago. Leaned the vehicle had been delivered to dealership on 7/15.

    2) Picked up TB on 7/20
    a) Drove around and at one point after vehicle had been turned-off and then restarted there was no audio.
    b) Returned to Dealer, shut off and when re-started everything was okay
    c) Drove home, stopped on way only to again have audio go out.

    3) Returned TB to Dealer 7/23; was provided a rental car. (FIRST ATTEMPT AT FIXING)

    4) Picked up TB 7/24, a part had to ordered and would be in a day or two
    a) While looking over the vehicle at home found the cover for the seat belt mechanism had been broken

    5) Called 7/26 to find out where is the part, part could not be found. Dealer called back later to say part had been found.

    6) Took car back to Dealer 7/26 p.m.

    7) Dealer called 7/27, vehicle ready including fixing the seat belt cover. Picked up vehicle afternoon of 7/27
a ) While driving back made a stop and again the audio went out.
    b) Called Dealer to report problem

    8) 7/28-29, drove to Hilton Head, on trip down no problem but never turned vehicle off. On return trip when vehicle was turn-off and re-started the audio went out. Called OnStar via cell phone while audio was out and they reported they could not communicate with vehicle. When vehicle was turned-off and restarted the audio came back on.

    9) 7/30 called Dealer to say bringing vehicle in and requested rental vehicle; was told we'll get you a nice vehicle
    a) On way to Dealer the engine "Service Light" came on. Reported same to Dealer
    b) Took vehicle in and it took one hour to get the rental vehicle, which was a mini-van as they were out of cars. The van had almost no gas and the ash tray was full of cigarette butts. The Van when you get to around 55 has a shake in the front end.
    c) Dealer called back to say the problem is the radio amplifier. I questioned this since Onstar could not communicate with the vehicle and it doesn't seem like the radio amplifier would stop Onstar from communication GPS and other info. It was also reported that the "service light" coming on was related to the radio amplifier problem. Amplifier has been ordered and Dealer is suppose to be in touch tomorrow to keep us updated.

    10) 7/31, called Dealer , told part not in, still planning on replacing audio amp in radio to fix the audio/Onstar and "service engine" light problem. Expect part to be in tomorrow.

Why on earth would someone assault the beautiful looks of a 2002 Envoy with those horrible tubes!?! They are for either serious brush infested off roading or, in our neck of the woods, for moving cattle. Most of these SUV's will likley go nowhere near either situation. It cracks me up to go to the city where I see these suburbanites with their SUV's loaded with these tacky tack-ons. I have a good friend in Kansas City with a $68,000 Range Rover HSE that is fully equipped with front and rear bumper, grille & light guards. I asked if he used them to push the poor people out of his way when he leaves his gate guarded community! At any rate, every owner who adds these should be criminally charged with vandalism. The Envoy is one of the best looking vehicles on the road at any price. Why ruin it?
  • xmf314xmf314 Member Posts: 154
I think brush guards are a hazard to pedestrians. Many years ago, while walking, I was hit by a car that jumped the curb, Thankfully, my injuries were confined to sever bruising. However, the front of the car was visibly damaged. I think the "give" in the sheet metal saved me from more serious injury. Now, I shudder when I see an SUV with those "bone crusher" bars on the front. It appears that they could inflict unnecessary injury on a pedestrian. Any comments?

You stated in msg 1714 that you ordered running boards (12497885) from a local GM parts shop back in mid July. I'm very interested in an update from you. Did you get them? Did they fit your Envoy? I ordered them from GMPartsDirect.com by the same number. They arrived and I made a late night attempt to mount them, but could not due to a mismatch in the contour at each end of the board. Please post whether yours worked or not so I can determine if I received the wrong boards or it may be that I need to make another installation attempt.

Why is it that the only way to get the locking rear miff on a TB is to order the 3.42 miff. It seems to me one of the biggest reasons to get a locking miff is when towing. . The 3.42 miff has the lowest towing weight of the three axle ratios. There is a thousand pound difference between the 3.42 and the 4.10. The locking miff with the 4.10 is available on the Envoy line, why not the TB?
  • hambone7hambone7 Member Posts: 130
You can get the locking differential with a 3.73 rear end...that's what I have.

I don't know from grease fittings. I'm not a mechanic. I'm only repeating what the service manager told me. If it's of any help, the repair ticket says: Lube Wheel Stops. I don't know exactly what that means, but the noise stopped.
  • vfontvfont Member Posts: 13
Does anyone else have this problem? If I try to fuel up my Envoy if the gas guage is above 1/4 tank, the gas won't go in unless the attendant turns the gas nozzle upside down. I know this sounds weird, but in NJ the majority of the gas nozzles have a rubber collar for vapor recovery. If the nozzle is put in the correct way, the gas pump shuts off after about fifty cents worth of gas goes in. No matter what you do, it will keep shutting off after a few cents worth of gas goes in unless the nozzle is turned upside down, then the gas goes in normally. The dealer says they can't find anything wrong with the Envoy. Go figure!
  • mmateyakmmateyak Member Posts: 15
I noticed the same thing on my mother's Chrysler LHS (car). You go to put gas in...pumps about 1/4 gallon and kicks off. Sometimes it happens, sometimes is doesnt. I'd say its something more so with the hose at the gas station...perhaps the sensor is too sensitive? This problem doesnt happen at all gas stations for me...just a few...so I think it has to do with the pump itself.

You visit the same gas station all the time? Same "brand" of gas? (i.e. Exxon, Mobil, etc) They will have the same equipment/nozzle/sensor from station to station...so that might be the problem.

Good Luck...its nothing MAJOR at least! :) Hopefully your Envoy isnt too thirsty, requiring frequent fillups! :P

I have had on order for about 6 weeks a set of GM rubber floor mats for my new Envoy. They are still not here and the dealer today said there was a "quality issue" notification from GM saying that the mats would not be delivered until the issue was resolved. Does anyone else know anything about this? Should I drop back and go to plan B?
  • rktcyntstrktcyntst Member Posts: 9
I've also had this happen on different vehicles and have been able to get around it simply by not mating the fuel pump completely to the vehicle's recepticle (see below). I'm not sure how pumps differ from place to place, but all the ones I've encountered here in CO have on the end of the pump what looks like a pipe surrounded by what looks like a spring that you put into the car. Whenever I've run into the trouble pumping, I simply pull the pump from the completely "in" position to the next spring stop (the pump is still in full connection with the vehicle's recepticle, just not in as far as it'll go) and that usually takes care of the problem. Don't know what the pumps you're using are like, but this might help.... or not. It's worked for me though and use it at your own risk... Just use your head and if you think it might leak, don't do it.

I have a slight vibration when driving at 70 mph on a "good" road, as if there is such a thing in NM. I took it to the dealer and they also felt it, rebalanced and checked the tires and it was still there. They ran a vibration test and said that it was below the 6hz max that GM allows and could not do anything about it. They tested three other TBs and they also had the same issue. Has anyone encountered this in any of the other models?
  • steph7steph7 Member Posts: 2
My Envoy is having the same problem and it happens at different gas stations but not at all of them. We just took it on a 3000 mile road trip and it probably happened about 40% of the time. I was planning on taking it in next week and seeing what the dealer had to say.
  • debbin67debbin67 Member Posts: 35
Ok, this is the second time I will try to write this, the first one got deleted before I could post.
    3300 miles on my Envoy
No oil problems as previously mentioned
Gas mileage way better than at first
    Second recall-console-fixed-no problems
Luggage rack latch-wouldn't stay latched, they replaced the whole bar.-Very good, as this was causing major rattling on top and was driving me bananas!
I know that the rubber molding issue was addressed in earlier posts, however, I think everyone should really check around your windows!! I blew this off and went to take my kids to camp, and low and behold, the rubber molding on top of the windshield was never secured! We drove 150 miles @ 70 miles an hour with this strip flapping in the wind. Didn't know it until someone got our attention when we exited the highway! I don't know if anything serious could have happened, but it freaked me out! Had to drive all the way home like this. Took it to the dealer and they had to have a glass company come out and secure it. That too is now fixed and I must say I still love this truck!! Drives excellent and the dealer has been very good about everything!! Just thought I would update everyone!! Thanks!

There's been several posts about owners attempting to purchase running board for their 2002 Envoy. I just came from my dealer's parts counter. He gave me the number 12497681 ($429 retail) for the Envoy boards. I have no assurances that they are factory original nor if mounting hardware is included in the kit, and having been burned by the 12497885 misfit, I hesitate to order blindly again. It occurs to me that there must be several Envoy owners that read this forum that have new Envoys with factory installed running boards. Please, someone take a flashlight and read the number stamped on the bottom of the board (GM almost always stamps their parts), and post the number for those of us in need. Thanks.

At 2500 miles, my Envoy is great. Ride is excellant and comfort is supreme. Gas milage has been 17 city and 20 on highway, but there were some mixture on those numbers. Only one tiny grip and that is the roof rack makes a little whistling noise at 60+ speeds. In town SUV is quite as a mouse. Lots of lookers as I go down the road, but best of all, no rattles, no breakdowns, nothing gone wrong yet. Nice job GM

Swithing subject - Read MotorTrends Sept 2001 issue - compared 8 SUV's, Trucks, and HyBrids. While all had + & -, GM had equal or better scores than Exployer in every category and in fact here is the break down of how the Grades (A,B,C,D,F) of all the vehicles break down into 4 and 12 point scales.

    1 Escalade 43.9 121
    2 Envoy 43.0 117
    3 Avalanche 42.5 114
    4 Sequia 41.4 112
    5 Frontier 39.9 108
    6 Exployer 38.5 104
    7 Liberty 38.3 103
    8 Silverado HD 31.2 84

Again, I realize every vehicle has + & -'s, but overall Envoy #2 just behind the Cadillac Escalade and ahead of Toyata's Sequia #4 and way ahead of the Ford Exployer, which just beat out the Jeep Liberty for 6th place. Obviously I am happy with my Envoy. Nice comparison by MotorTrend.

Sounds like vapor lock. Common in warmer temperatures, turning the feed nozzle upside down probably just breaks the seal of the vapor recover system enough to allow the gas to flow (and circumvent it's purpose).

I just crawled around on my garage floor, flashlight in hand, for 15 minutes. I could not find any set of numbers stamped or on a label anywhere on the running boards or the three metal brackets on each side. I will keep looking and post if I find any sort of part number.

Has anyone had problems with their air conditioner blowing warm air after the Trailblazer is stopped? After the TB is moving again sometimes it will begin to blow cool air. I have tried everything to make it work properly with the Mode/Auto control. No luck. Any suggestions? Its going to the dealer next week for repairs. I have had many problems with my TB LTZ, wouldn't recommend anyone buying one. Looks like the Lemon law is in my future.

    Pewter SLE 4WD Envoy...

I've had it since May 23rd, I'm now at 7500 miles.

The only thing I've brought it back for is the door scratch guard trim on the driver's side. The rear door trim was mounted too far forward, and was gouged by the driver's door when I opened them both simultaneously. Replaced under warranty, without a question. Even if GM can't put trim on worth a damn, the vehicle itself is well worth minor quabbles.

No oil problems. I run synthetic, the engine is smooth as silk, and the transmission has no problems with gear searching, as some reported here. I don't like the way the gearshift feels when you shift it into the 3/2/1 ranges (too much play, and too much pressure required; it's easy to hit 1 while trying to shift to 2), but this is a minor complaint. Still, a more crisp-feeling shifter would be nice.

I don't like the location of the rear window wiper control, but on a vehicle of this size, the rear window shouldn't matter much; the side mirrors are fine 99.5% of the time.

The steering feels too loose for me, I like more feedback. Still, understeer is preferable.

I'm a small guy (5'6"), and the seat feels too large for me unless I slump. The lumbar support is a compromise for me, I can never find the exact right setting for me. Still, I feel this is more of an issue regarding my size than anything else; the seats are quite comfortable for the duration of my 6/7 hour drives. The pivoting headrest is a very nice feature. The cloth on the seats is very nice, grabby without being rough.

The boot covering the parking brake lever came loose from the floor with a slight tug. Somewhat annoying, and I'm currently arguing with my dealer about how it should be attached.

The air conditioning/climate controls are wonderful; the AC cools down within a minute of starting the vehicle, and the air pressure on the center vents is wonderful (I like a brisk, cold breeze in my face while driving). The outside vents are weaker than I'd like, but that's probably from the vents on the side of the console to defrost the window (which leech from the main vents). My family loves the rear controls and dual zone system.

the extravagant number of power points is a nice touch.

The vehicle is quiet enough at highway speeds to sleep in. I've had nary an odd noise (beyond the wheel weights being bumped at full turns, as mentioned previously), and the ride is as smooth as one could wish for in a ladder frame truck.

The window tinting on the front side windows could be darker.

The storage compartment under the main rear area is very nice; perfect for storing cleaning supplies.

The rear center seat is hellishly uncomfortable for a reasonably-sized adult to ride in for ANY length of time. Alot of that problem could be solved by moving the seatbelt anchor to the right, but with the split seat arrangement, that's not possible.

The stereo system is a major peeve of mine. It's too goddamned bassy; I have to turn the bass almost all the way down to get any appreciable sound quality. It's obviously marketed to the, um, 'hip hop' crowd that values a back massage over decent reproduction of sound. The speakers are coming out ASAP. Are there any other speakers in this vehicle besides the door speakers? (I have the base sound system, btw)

Beyond the exterior trim, the fit and finish is the best I've seen for any GM vehicle I've ever owned. The interior is fantastically done, IMHO. The carpetting feels good on bare feet (a first for any vehicle I've owned).

Are dual trip odometers too much to ask for? Even the Nissan XTerra I test drove had them.

On the whole, I would go through the pain-in-the-[non-permissible content removed] buying process all over again in an instant. GM has scored a knockout blow in this vehicle, IMHO. I hope to drive this vehicle until the wheels fall off, and I'll enjoy every mile of it.

All car 4 and 5 cylinder engines are inline designs. There's nothing new about this technology. Inline designs are not necessarily more reliable either.

I have experienced the same problem with my 2002 Envoy. Just make sure you press the button to turn on the Air Circulation within the vehicle. It is the button to the left of the AC OFF button. You will get cooler air and a constant air flow. The button is not on by default, you have to press it each time you start your vehicle. By default, you get air from outside, which the flow increases as your speed increases.

"The window tinting on the front side windows could be darker."

This is easily remedied by going to a local tint shop and asking them to tint the front driver and passenger windows to match... A local shop charged me $60, which seemed a bit much when the whole car would have been $150.. but the end result looks very nice. I've also noticed that the factory tinting is not as dark as it was on my Jeep Grand Cherokee and also there's very little heat rejection afforded by the factory stuff-- therefore I plan to return to the tint shop to have them install a lighter shade of tint over the rear factory glass to make it a little darker and add the UV/Heat rejection that the tinted films provide.

Like many I bought my Envoy in late March and it sat the entire month of April locked in a dealer's lot waiting for parts. When I bought the car perhaps I missed something, so someone might be able to enlighten me. I was led to believe that I had one full year of OnStar free of charge. I've tried to use it several times and a message always comes back saying "Invalid tag." I've also tried to "dial" the number with the same results. I called OnStar and was told that if I didn't use it the first month it was gone. Since my vehicle had been recalled and I couldn't even touch it for the first month let alone use it I find this a bit confusing. To me, free for a year means free for a year. Any suggestions?
