and I had a lot of them---I even remember a 45rpm record player I saw under a friends cousin's dash even before the 8 track----thought it was ultra cool--I believe that was before they had FM stereo!

Kudos for another great photo essay! You should work for Chilton's! This really helps all the rest of us...But man, doesn't this seem like an awful lot of work just to swap out the rear speakers??? Why couldn't they just be accessible from the trunk like most cars??

Chrysler was running a promotion this Spring: Come in to your dealer for an oil change and send in your receipt to get the gauge....
  • ajpiiiajpiii Member Posts: 260
The whole setup (tires, wheels, lug nuts, wheel locks, chrome valve stems, mounting, balancing, and an alignment) ran just a little over $3k

Not too bad considering they are 20's... They look 10 times better in person, and when they start spinning... wow... Im in love

Finally got the shipment of Applied Rotor Technology rotors and brake pads. Took about a month. If everything fits they go on tomorrow. Got them in a gold color plating so they should set off nice against the silver Razorstars. The rotors are cryogenically treated and channeled. Hoping that they improve braking performance. Will keep y'all posted once they are on. Cost including shipping [$60] for all four and pads was $570. Jeez..the 2 boxes they came in are heavy. I plan on opening them up tonight when I will have some time to dote on them. "Yes, honey, they make the car safer to drive. Honest."

mdmark - you can get a different head unit that will support the changer- either through chrysler (expensive) or another place like ebay. Then you can attach the 4 disc changer. If having a perfect fit is your main concern, go that route. If not, you can easily get another head-unit and changer for less money and get a better system.

Tire guage - that looks like the one they were giving away for free with a brake job. I happened to need one and filled out the rebate form for it. I should have one soon ;)

Zaino - well, just finished 3 coats of Z5 and one of Z2. So far, I like it. It was a hell of a lot of work over the last few days - but that's because I washed then clayed, then Z1 then Z5 the car in one morning. That was the tough part. Then I've been doing a coat or 2 per day (depending on temperature). I'll prolly do another Z2 later today or tomorrow, and leave it like that for now. If it holds up as well as everyone says, I'll be hooked ;) But the shine is great on my 01 steel blue M...

I have a virtually new factory head unit that supports the 4-disc in-dash changer. I don't have the changer itself as I sold it. I will be happy to discuss transferring this head unit to you if you wish. Just email me. My email address is listed on my profile.
  • scotianscotian Member Posts: 1,064
will wear away from the braking surface immediately, so you won't see much of it. But it will inhibit rusting everywhere else.

What made you decide to do all four wheels, besides keeping the color change consistent? I didn't even bother replacing my rear pads/shoes, because it didn't seem worth the bother (and my new rotors were silver plated).
  • fuzzywuzzyfuzzywuzzy Member Posts: 958
Those rotors are GREAT! I wish I knew of them before I went with the KRV ones. I have the ART ones at all 4 corners of my Explorer. MAN!! What a difference. They still look brand new too after a year in service. You will be happy with them.
  • easyrider300measyrider300m Member Posts: 1,116
I just had an oil change at the dealer and they didnt mention it---do I need a form to send in--or else where do I send the receipt
  • sdmike2sdmike2 Member Posts: 2,909
Make sure you're doing a treatment of Z6 between your Z2 and Z5 coats. It really brings out the shine even more.
  • sdmike2sdmike2 Member Posts: 2,909
Hey glenn...if you hang around long enough someone will want your box of intake parts too! lol.
  • splattsplatt Member Posts: 328
easyrider - I think its ended now, was till about june 6 and I think only on the qualifying service - brake pads or shoes. I had the pads done since they were at 2/32.

sdmike - hadn't gotten any z6 - was checking it out for starters w/o trying to spend too much ;) But I'll keep that in mind for the future. Thanks.

Fuzzy--Great to hear a glowing endorsement, I feel better already. Hope Dean's catalogs at ART got me the right sizes. I know he shipped two different sizes for front and back cause the part numbers are different.

Scotian--I hope that stuff does not wear off, but color was secondary to performance. I went with all four wheels because...uh...I'm an old person and it just seemed like the right thing to do. I plan on having the old rotors turned [$15 ea] and keeping them in case the new ones don't work out for some reason. I just hope it all comes out ok. Next up if this goes well are the duals. "Uh, honey, can you smell that strange exhaust like odor? Looks like I may need to change my exhaust system to make sure we don't get carbon monoxide poisoning...and... might as well go stainless so it will all last." How's it sound? Will it sell?
  • splattsplatt Member Posts: 328
Bigmike - well, I kinda doubt it, but if it works, let me know. I'll try it here :D
  • muskateer3muskateer3 Member Posts: 103
Any noise from the slots as you apply the brakes?
  • scotianscotian Member Posts: 1,064
My plated and frozen "tri-slotted" rotors w/ KVR pads haven't made any noise, and are still looking great!

of input/output sensor failures. As I was leaving for lunch today I felt a hiccup....then another and my engine light went on and it's stuck in 2nd. :-( I have almost 46K on my 99.

Because I knew so much about this it wasn't a suprise at all. I just finished my errand at lunch (around town driving) then figured I might as well drive to the nearest Chrysler dealer (Poway). Now that made me cranky!

I have never been to this dealer before. I drove up and told the service manager I thought I had the "infamous" sensor failure. He just looks at me and says "my tranny guy is really backed up today". So does this mean tomorrow? I ask. Yes. Okay so I asked if they could give me a loaner (or rental as seems to be the trend at least in So CA)so I could leave it with him. He tells me that the warranties usually don't provide one until the 2nd day of repair.....IF it's a warrantable repair. I told him it better be as it's a known problem. I told him I had the Max care extended. He acted like he was clueless
as to what this warranty covered said he'd have to "look into it." At that point I was a little pissed as he was offering me no help at all. I told him I worked nearby but lived about 28 miles on the freeway from there and I really didn't want to have to drive it home in 2nd. I get a blank stare. So I politely informed him I would drive it home tonight and take it to the dealer near my house tomorrow. (this is the one I have used in the past...not perfect but at least they are nice). Then he starts to backtrack as he realized he just lost my business (cuz even though it's warranty I have a $100 deductable). He tells me not to let the RPMs go too high for too long as it will get too hot (duh!) and trying to give me his card...starts talking about shuttle rides, etc. as I was backing away....he can kiss my M's sweet rear end!

It was realy a drag driving back to work in 2nd. I'm going to have to take side roads to avoid the freeway as much as I can on the way home. I need to drive it another 35 miles between today and tomorrow to get it to the other dealer. Hope it will be okay.
  • blondablonda Member Posts: 542
As I was driving, in 2nd, back to work through Poway, I saw a 01 or 02 (couldn't see the front end)Inferno red M parked with duals. Looked exactly like the tips that are on the special. Large single round ones. looked nice. Wonder if he/she is a member?
  • muskateer3muskateer3 Member Posts: 103
I am glad they are working out for you, I just havn't been as lucky.

My KVR cross-drilled rotors made a racket, and it was even worse when I used their pads. It quieted down some when I changed pads. Worst of all KVR wouldn't stand behind them. I was out $400 and was supposed to be happy about it.

The holes on my KVR's were drilled in a straight line radiating from the center of the rotor. I then saw someone else's KVR rotors (maybe they were yours) and the holes were drilled in a spiral pattern from the center of the rotor. It would seem to me that the latter would be better as the pad isn't coming to the edge of either three of four holes at exactly the same time.

Regardless, I am back to stock and still looking for something better. Maybe the ART's will do the trick.

Don't you just love the sympathy and help from these dealers? I despise them. Rarely have I encountered anyone at a dealer service dept that is really willing to help and do the right thing. Oh when you're buying a car, they won't leave you alone. They'll do anything, even invite your mother-in-law to dinner if it will help make the sale, but service??? IT SUCKS!!! That's why I never take my car to a dealer for anything except warranty work and then only if I have to. Someone somewhere really needs to address this issue as, IMO, it has gotten totally out of control and is completely unacceptable!
  • scotianscotian Member Posts: 1,064
To get the non-KVR rotors I now have, talk to Jerry at: http://www.MyRoadster.Net/

KVR didn't stand behind the rotors they made for me, either:

    http://public.fotki.com/Scotian/300m/exterior/razorstar_wheels/cross-drilled_rotors/

Granted I asked for something a little unusual, but they, being rotor professionals, should have drilled a better pattern. Even if they had used a good pattern, the rotor they uses was inside-vented, not outside-vented as the OEM rotors are.

Jerry actually replaced them for me out of his own pocket, so that's why I highly recommend him to people seeking rotors.

I had my troubles with the no-star in my area the first year I owned the car. Swore I would never return unless it was warranty. Then they changed management.

Well I have had to go back twice this year for warranty work and both times they were absolutely OUTSTANDING. They fell all over themselves to address the problem quickly and correctly, and washed my car to boot.

Riverside Chysler Jeep in Riverside, CA.. Still no stars, but OK in my book.
  • muskateer3muskateer3 Member Posts: 103
Can I ask what the price was?
  • blondablonda Member Posts: 542
Thanks for the sympathy. :-) It is kinda sad. The service manager I have dealt with at Jack Powell isn't the most personable guy in the world, but they at least treat you with courtesy and respect. I'm sure my car will be covered with grease and fingerprints when I get it back (and maybe a scratch), but I guess it's the tradeoff I'm going to go with.

I too won't go to a dealer for anything but warranty. I wonder how easy a fix it the sensor is. I heard the part was only about $16. Since I have a $100 deductable they'll probably charge me $30 for the part and $70 for labor.

Muskateer -- I wonder how long it would take me to drive from San Marcos to Riverside in 2nd!
  • muskateer3muskateer3 Member Posts: 103
You wouldn't be able to stand going that slow for that long in a car that looks that fast, you would lose your sanity somewhere in between.

Not a lot of good sanitariums in Temecula!

    Nice!
I just put a set of Proxes T1S tires on my summer ride...a 1990 Mazda Miata.I think you will be well pleased with the tires.
P.S. That blue print on your web site is VERY difficult to read.
  • blondablonda Member Posts: 542
You're telling me. It was hard enough keeping it to 45 in a 45mph zone on the way home from lunch!
  • muskateer3muskateer3 Member Posts: 103
Blonda - Which one did you get?

I am about to buy one and so far it looks like warrantywizard has got the best deal. $981 7/100 enhanced coverage with no deductible.

    Thoughts or comments anyone?
  • blondablonda Member Posts: 542
I bought the Chrysler Max Care when my M was just past the 2 year "in service" mark. I didn't realize at the time that if it was before 2 years in service I could have saved about $400. I paid $1,300 and the dealer gave me 0% financing on it for a year. I have a $100 deductable and could have purchased a $50 deductable for about $300 more. Coverage is 75/7 -- or something like that. It's supposed to cover everything but rubber/plasctic or glass parts, but once you get the paperwork and read through it it's a little misleading. It doesn't cover anything related to the interior parts or weather stripping, etc. I think I remember even someone having the dealer tell them the cable connected to the shifter wasn't covered. I have heard of issues with non dealer warranties in the past so didn't go that route. This warranty also covers roadside emergency service, hotel (of car breaks down out of town) and car rental. This sensor will be the first time I have used it; however I think the price to fix will be less than the deductable.
  • toms99toms99 Member Posts: 252
I don't think my dealer has any stars, but they should! Sometime during my 2nd year of ownership my passenger-side rear-view mirror was crunched while I was parked at Wally-Mart. I took the car to the dealer to get an estimate on replacement, and to decide on whether to try to go through my insurance (if over detuctable) or pay out of pocket. I explained exactly what happened to the Service Manager, he looks at the mirror and says, "Gee, I think you're mistaken...looks like a manufacturing defect to me...We'll replace it under warranty."

Sympathetic Service Managers ARE out there. I just don't know if that is unusual or common...It seems that the negative stories get the most posts...so here's my "Thumbs Up" for my dealer!
  • muskateer3muskateer3 Member Posts: 103
Blonda - Thanks for the info. Any specifics as to why non-dealer was bad?

    Thanks,
  • blondablonda Member Posts: 542
I have heard stories of dealers or repair places not honoring the warranties. I don't know of any specifics though. I'm sure others can chime in. I do know one person who had an Olds Aurora with an non dealer extended. He had a lot of trouble with the car to begin with, but it made matters worse when he couldn't get repairs. One time he had to tow it from a mechanic to the dealer and back to another mechanic as no one would authorize the repair. It was so frustrating he ended up dumping the car all together.

blonda - so sorry about your problems. If I can help in any way just call me. I had great service experience at Rancho Chrysler/Jeep on Clairmont Mesa Blvd....which is a little bit further than Poway. It's just west of 163. These are the guys that did my plugs without hesitation too. Anyway, let me know if I can help.

As for contracts, the reason I went with a DC service contract is the hassle of using a third party contract. You typically have to pay for the repair up front and then submit the paperwork for reimbursement. It can be a hassle. However, when pricing contracts make sure to compare those offered by www.warrantydirect.com to the DC contracts in terms of coverage and price. They're a good company.

    Mike

    Thanks for the info.

A recent quote for Chrysler 7/100 enhanced was $2500 on chryslerwarranty.com and up to $3900 at a dealer. I almost passed out.

I will make sure that my local dealer will accept warranty wizard before I proceed.

Good luck on your sensor issue.
  • muskateer3muskateer3 Member Posts: 103
Just checked www.warrantydirect.com. When you try to get a quote, their website informs you that they are temporarily suspending California policies as they try to comply with a new state law.
  • blondablonda Member Posts: 542
Thanks for the offer--I'll ket you know. I actually thought of your dealer today when I was leaving Poway, but it's even farther from my home so didn't want to venture there. I'm dropping the M off at Jack Powell on my way home tonight and my husband is going to pick me up.

Looks like I'll be driving the manual SUV to work tomorrow. Hope the traffic isn't too bad -- it's got a long clutch and a real pain in stop and go. I think I'm gonna ask my coworker with the TLS if he wants to race....straight up the rocky hill behind my work. :-)

By the way...our "ding dude" was here today fixing one of my coworkers BMW's. He was equally impressed with his work. Said he'd called a few places and he had the best price.
  • easyrider300measyrider300m Member Posts: 1,116
at a minimum price of $2500, I'll take my chances--and you have to pay a deductible too---jeesh----I'll just keep changing my oil every 3k and the tranny fluid about every 20k---I just changed the differential fluid at 35k. I'll do the plugs at about 50k. Maybe I'll take that $2500 I save by not buying the warranty and buy some Chrysler stock with it. In five years I would hope it would double to $5000 and be more than enough to cover an engine or tranny failure! And if I dont need any major work, I'm ahead of the game!

Anyone know where exactly is the pcv valve. I think Im due to change that and dont want the monkies touching my car.

PS: still trying to get them to cover the slight movemeent in the drivers seat. The TSB specifically states it applies to my car and they are still delaying covering it. I have had several issues I have had to argue to get covered but I usually win. I'll keep yas posted on this one. I know what you were talkin about , fastdriver, but I like the M enough to put up with the negative 2* dealers!
  • splattsplatt Member Posts: 328
I'd also recommend being careful of 3rd party warranties. Places won't deal with them and you have to go through reimbursement. A $150 repair is no big deal, but a several thousand dollar one... Also, warrantydirect had almost the same price for a $0 deduct as the Chrysler max care on a 5/75 ($30 dif)

I've got 32K on my 01 and will be getting something before 36k. Prolly a 6/100 or 6/75, but haven't decided. However, also ask your local dealer - the one near me (Knopf in Ambler, PA) said they'd match chryslerwarranty.coms prices. I'll go there since I'm supporting the local biz (well, technically Lansdale-Chrysler is closest, but they suck the big one - fyi. Don't go there, just bad service)

easyrider - you can also get them a bit cheaper for fewer miles/years. Miles is the big price hit - if you can get a6/75 it's only $1000 - $1500 depending on the deductible...

Just curious...how is everyone with the 99's doing on their batteries? Anyone had to replace theirs yet? Mines 3-1/2 years and still going. It's a 3-year life battery.

That's one bonus of having the K&N Charger installed -- easier to get to when you need to change it out (at least it looks that way any way)

When I got Big Red the 5/100 quote from warrantydirect was around $1,000. A nice deal. I think it was their Silver policy (but my memory generally sucks)... Anyway, my DC dealer tried to sell me DC's warranty for $1,800 but I told them unless they got close to the warrantydirect price "no thanks". She did the warranty for $1,100, and I figure the extra $100 is worth it being a DC contract so I don't have to deal with reimbursements (plus I could finance it). I have the "Added Care" 5 year, 100,000 mile DC warranty with a $100 deductible.
  • muskateer3muskateer3 Member Posts: 103
FYI... Both warrantydirect and warrantywizard claim they pay immediately by Credit Card, no paperwork. warrantydirect is planning on writing in California soon, but they could not give me a specific date.

I will just have to go to local dealer, and find out if they would accept these policies.
  • valhsvalhs Member Posts: 63
I bought one for my 2000 LHS through 1SourceAutoWarranty. They are a member of the BBB and have been around long enough to trust. I paid $1,100 for a 10yr/100k warranty with virtually B to B coverage and no deductible. I know that their prices have gone up recently but they still are much lower than the $1,800 to $2,000 my dealer wants. I'm currently at 50,000 miles and I haven't needed it yet, knock on wood.
