What I MAY do is just go ahead and get the Trans Am, and then wait and see what Chrysler does with their 300Ms in 2002. I would just wait, but not having a car is a royal pain! I'm going to test drive a 300M tomorrow anyway.
The 300C Hemi looks pretty cool, but the back seat looks kinda cramped. Why are all the back seats in convertibles so small? What happened to the big and roomy muscle cars of yestyear?
  • dustinnewtondustinnewton Member Posts: 242
Scotian-I saw that panel on their homepage and it did look VERY familiar. Maybe that made an EL cluster for DC, but converted it to "EL lookalike" due to cost. It has to be expensive to have that much EL material in a cluster, as opposed to a few measley light bulbs.

Duals-SD-Haven't ordered the tips yet, but the ones you have are definitely what I'm going to get. I think they'll look fantastic against that deep slate. Should be a nice contrast, and the chrome will match my wheels! I haven't seen Ave's system, but I'll probably stick with a single pipe to the back for simplicity and to make it cheaper. Still have to have money left for the wood, tint, tuner kit, new tires, 18 inch wheels, etc.!! ;-)
Rog/Fuzzy-I'm not thinking so much about the performance gain/loss with the collector, I'm just looking for a bit more aggressive growl from the 6. I figure if it's too much, or if the drone is bad, it would be easy to have the shop put the front collector in. The only thing about sound files is that it's hard to judge the volume from them. The sound itself is obvious, but trying to figure out if it's a low or high volume growl is what's tough. I guess I'll just have to try it and see if I like it. Maybe I'll leave the rear muffler off too and just have a straight pipe to a dual tip!!!

I think my whole picture is tilted slightly to the left. It all looks pretty straight in person, a tribute to scotian's ability to cut straight. :)

Let me know if you need the contact information for Ed Hanson (of course the post-it note I had on my desk as disappeared) for those tips. As a reminder, he quoted the tips themselves for only $15 plus shipping each, and the custom staggered Y-pipe/tip assembly for $100 per side. Make sure to let him know what diameter pipe you'll be running from the rear muffler to the tips so he can use the right size.

sdmike -- I agree Scotian did a great job...but I'm not sure Chrysler did!

scotian -- I apologize for even THINKING that the template might have been slightly crooked...I'm sure now it's the Chrysler wings!! Anyway it's very slight and I would never have noticed it except for scotian's STRAIGHT transparency. Compared to the ripples in the C pillars, it's a drop in the ocean!!

Maybe you can get scotian to make you a crooked one? lol

    sdmike2-

Tell me about it! I rinse off my car in the morning before work and dry it. By the time I get out of work at 3, it's covered with pollen. Going to wash it again now and put on some Z5 or Z2 because I bought a bra for this car. It has a sloping hood similar to Christine and I don't want hood chips so soon like I endured with Christine. I'm only going to put it on for highway trips. It's 2 pieces, so maybe I'll leave the hood one on more often then the bumper one. I don't think it's going to be any fun putting it on and off, but if I want protection, it's the price I have to pay. Good thing it came with directions and a diagram! LOL... Looks complicated!

After several months of looking/reading/test driving I've finally taken the plunge and will be picking up my new 01 300M on Sat afternoon.

    Can hardly wait!

The passion and participation on this board helped me decide that this was the next car for me. Have always owned cars with enthusiastic, informative owner's groups (most recently a SHO: SHO Registry/NESHOC) and am happy to continue that.

    Will be joining 300MClub.org soon.
  • sdmike2sdmike2 Member Posts: 2,909
    Congrats! What did you get?
  • funroadsfunroads Member Posts: 49
Here's what I'm picking up Saturday...

    '01
    Shale green/slate gray
    Lux group
    4CD changer
    Moonroof
    Side air bags
    $25800 (MSRP: $32615)

It was a tough decision because I really didn't want to give up PHG but in the end the deal seemed to good to pass over.

from now till saturday is gonna be the longest day and a half of your life lol! sat will be like xmas in may :)

i have a 2001 stone white fully loaded, minus phg. since i havent driven one with phg i guess i dont know what im missing, i think this car handles beautifully, and besides, i like the smoother ride..
  • sdmike2sdmike2 Member Posts: 2,909
Sounds nice. Make sure to order your Zaino and get ready to post pictures for us. I don't think we have a green one here on the board yet. :)
  • intrepidspiritintrepidspirit Member Posts: 662
Congratulations! Sounds like you got a fantastic deal... you got over $1,000 more off MRSP than I did on my last purchase and I got a great deal!

IMHO, you won't miss the PHP, unless you intend to drive 120 mph plus! Whereas the standard suspension gives a firm ride (firmer than many are used to), the PHP can be a little uncomfortable...at least that's how it felt to me when I test drove it.

One of the reasons I bought my 2000 300M was the passion I could sense from those posting on this forum -- it far exceeded any other forum! Even those that became unhappy with their M, did so with a passion -- fastdriver is a perfect example!

Anyway, I liked my M so much, I got another one for my wife last month. We now have M & M's (2000 & 2001)!

Good luck! I'm sure you'll love your car!

Check out the WINDOW TINTING message board in the AFTERMARKET & ACCESSORIES group. The message board show that 3M constantly is stated as the "best" tint, although it appears that it can be difficult to find, I suspect that just like alot of items it is being resold under other brand names.

If you are a long term car owner like I am (10 yrs/200k miles)I would reconsider the metalized films, and be sure they install the rear window tint on the outside of the backglass - regardless if you choose metalized or dyed tint.

I myself have Madico Granite series metalized film, 35% all around and extremely pleased. IMHO if you choose a nationally known brand, then the installer is what will make or brake the looks and longevity of your tint.
  • sdmike2sdmike2 Member Posts: 2,909
Thanks for the info. I found a local place here that uses 3M for all it's tinting jobs, and they remove the door panels to get a better coverage. Costs about $180 for 5 windows. I think I'll head up there next week. I think I'll do 35% (medium) all around even though it's darker than CA allows for the driver and passenger side windows. I just think different levels of tint for the front and back windows looks crummy.

  • sdmike2sdmike2 Member Posts: 2,909
Outside? As in on the outside of the window? I thought it goes inside. Also, will metalized tint interfere with the radio or defrosters?
  • sibesibe Member Posts: 102
I realize that discounts etc vary from region/State to State however it would be intersting to have a thread on prices people got. I believed that I got a good deal in Oregon (I wouldn't even bother checking with a dealer in Hawaii as prices here are ludicrous) but am not so sure now that I see what others got for their 2001 M.

Any interest in posting prices members got for their M and where they got it at as well as satisfaction or not with their dealer? I mean if I got my "M" 3000 miles from home, perhaps some prospective buyer also wouldn't mind a little drive to get a better deal...

Yes on the outside of the car but only on the rear window, door windows should be inside. Here are the pro's and con's and you will have to decide for yourself. Also find out if they do the rear window in one piece of film.

I personally have not lost any FM stations, and am not familiar enough w/AM radio but you may loose the week AM stations w/metallized film - this is what is typically said about AM.

I am in Texas and dyed tint will turn purple in about 3 to 4 years due to UV sun damage, if you use a cleaner w/ammonia like windex that accelerates the fading. If you wish to have it retinted and it is installed on the inside of the rear window many shops have trashed peoples rear window defroster and anntena which is attached to the inside surface of the rear window. If you do not plan on being in this car for more than 3 to 4 years do not worry about it, it will be somebody elses problem.

Inside installs will be typically installed in strips, that will cause a seem that will become more apparent w/age. Also there will be a slight air space adjacent to each line of the defroster and anntena.

Sure the same tint will probably last longer on the inside vs outside, but a tint shop can easily replace film that is installed on the outside surface of the back window without trashing you anntena or defroster. I would hate to have to buy a new rear glass, $600?

Metalized film will definetly live longer if installed on the outside surface of the glass and it gives the same UV and heat rejection values regardless of % value. The color of metalized film is more stable since the color of the film is from the metal particles in it.

Just my two cents and experience

I should clarify the circumstance under which I got the price I did. The car I'm buying is the same one I mentioned in post #2955 (5/5 3:52pm). The car was found to have scratches on the paint before (during?) shipping and was returned to the factory for "refinishing". I have a DC Disclosure Notice which states the existence of the scratches and shows a charge for refinishing. I have looked it over very closely and the only thing I could see out of the ordinary was that the right rear tail light lens was not seated correctly. The dealership has fixed this.

The car has 40 miles on the odo, 28 of which are mine :-} And of course it's got the regular new car warranty. But it does have a little "history" which accounts for the lower than normal price.

    Is it Saturday yet?
  • sdmike2sdmike2 Member Posts: 2,909
killer deal. Glad you checked into the car's "history" before going forward.

lonestar - thanks for the information. There is a local place here in San Diego (Escondido) that uses 3M film and apparently is top notch. I'll ask about the metalized, outside mounting, seams and all that stuff. My buddy with an 01 camaro had his rear window done there all in one piece and it looks awesome. And that is a HUGE curved window.
  • sdmike2sdmike2 Member Posts: 2,909
My loaded 01 M had a MSRP of $34,580, and a dealer invoice of about $32,200. I paid $29,600 after $2,000 rebate at Midway Chrylser/Jeep in San Diego. No other San Diego dealer would touch the price.

Where is the shop? I am looking for a place to have my LS done (maybe we can find a nice twisty and have some fun :}). Also, let all know if you went in or out on the rear window, K?
  • sdmike2sdmike2 Member Posts: 2,909
It's called M&M Window Tinting or something like that, and it's in Escondido near all the auto dealers. They have a vented "clean room" to keep the dust and lint to a minimum, and they remove the door panels to get the best window fit. I'm thinking about using medium (35%) all the way around, even though CA doesn't want you to have anything more than light on the side windows.

Congrats and welcome to our group---besides the benefits of Edmunds, you should consider joining the 300M Enthusiasts club as it has a lot to offer for minimal cost--check it out at http://www.300mclub.org/ --the club offers quality apparel such as embroidered shirts and hats at discount prices and you are kept informed of future member meets and also tsb's and other useful links. I just joined last month and already see the value of the club. It will only get better as the membership expands--right now it has close to 100 members-
.Members can join in a chat session every Wednesday night at 10pm EDT

I paid 28,600 in march of 2000 for a 2000 M equipped with 4 disc cd , sunroof, chrome wheels, full size spare, wheel locks, locking gas cap, a full tank of gas, and an inspection sticker. I didnt take the $1000 rebate that was offered as I took the 5 year .9% financing for the full purchase price---worth several thousand dollars over equivalent regular financing. I think I got a very fair deal and although I have had some warranty probs which for the most part have been resolved, I have been very happy with my M.

This group can provide you with the expertise to put you at ease in installing many worthwhile mods including the dual exhausts, more efficient air intakes, wood trim installation, spoiler installation, side lights, custom clock faces and many other mods. We're just one big happy family here.

What are you going to call your M--most of us have chosen a name for their M's. I call mine "Lolitta"

Enjoy your new M for many hopefully trouble-free miles.

Funroads - You'll have a fun time with your new toy. Not quite as much a screamer as the SHO, but much more classy and comfortable. My opinion - the PHG was definately worth the money. However, I understand you situation - you got a great deal.

I paid 29.4K for a 2K with everything except chrome wheels a little over 1 year ago, but also got the .9 financing for 5 years.

I'd be curious to see how many SHO owners bought a 300M - I imagine quite a few. Now if we could only get Chrysler to put in a 5-speed....

Thanks for the warm welcome! I have made a web page for my car last week after i got it, http://phases78.homestead.com/300m.html but i havent updated it with the few mods i have done yet. So far I've tinted the windows, made a custom clock face (love that thing) and installed a k&n filter. I have a wood kit on the way along with side markers i've purchased from roger. i also plan dual exhaust in a month or so in which case im definitely gonna need some advice. i also like avalanche165's hood scoop, but thats last on the list.

i love this place i check it quite often (when im not at work)you all seem to to be very friendly and trustworthy. i sure hope so just sent roger a check lol!

p.s. havent come up with a name yet though i have been thinking :)

    I can double double that!
    I had a '94 SHO (V-6) and a '96 SHO (V-8) before getting my '99 300M. I now have a '01 300M.
You're right on with your comments; the SHO had the grunt, but not much in the luxury department.
When you factor in the fact that the prices were about the same, inflation adjusted, there is no comparison.

Had the same problem. Took it to Goodyear dealer to check it out. Badly dented rim (not visable; had to remove wheel) was causing shimmy. I seem to remember hitting a small pothole at 50+ mph! A new wheel and $375 later, no shimmy!
  • fuzzywuzzyfuzzywuzzy Member Posts: 958
For comparsion, I might have paid the most for my 300M. $31200. It has everything but the smokers, & cold weather group. That was in Nov.99(00 model) The dealers in my state(FL)had no rebates, no special finacing no nothing. I went to 15 different dealers & could not get a better deal. I tried the walkout method to no avail. I walked out of 6 dealers with no luck. Todays deals are just great. It also shows how in the hole DC must be.
  • dustinnewtondustinnewton Member Posts: 242
It will kill your radar detector reception from the back and sides of the car. There was a big write-up about it on my detector's site ( http://www.valentine1.com ) and it also mentioned autos that come from the factory with metal heat control layers built into the windows, like my Y2K Warner Brothers Chevy Venture. It doesn't get hot on the inside in summer, but it COMPLETELY blinds my detector! Luckily, the M doesn't have this type of winshield. Just an extra something to consider if your windows aren't tinted yet.

    Hey all..
I'm leaving work early today to go take one for a test drive. I plan to put it through it's paces on the highway, and also test out the PHG (if the dealer has one) on some twisty roads, as well as do some boring day-to-day stuff, like parking, backing, playing with all the gadgets, etc... just to be sure I get the best feel. I think I'll test out the TA again as soon as I'm done with that, so I can do a back-to-back comparison.

I was wondering, could everyone post a picture of their car?

I'd like to see a picture of one in each color. If (by chance) the M floats my boat, I may decide to get one TODAY... but then I'd be left with the problem of color choice! (I'm an artist and have a tendancy to like ALL colors equally) and, since the brochures aren't quite accurate with true color representation, it would help me a LOT if I could see all your pictures.
(Besides, this is a good chance to show off your girls)

    THANKS MUCH!!

I'd be surprised if the shop will tint any windows darker than the law allows. My guess is the only way to go darker is to do the work yourself.

Are you sure 35 is as dark as you can go? Granted, the sun is slightly harsher here in AZ, but we can go down to 5 in the back. I have two different tints but I don't find it that noticable. Even with the same on all windows, the front will look lighter because the windshield isn't tinted.

about half the shops here will do the tint as dark as you want, they just wont give you the sticker, or papers, saying its legal, if its not. in fact, i think most the places i know of do illegal tints..

get my oil changed, ill be back. hey funroads, if you wake up and its still not saturday, go back to sleep ;)

p.s. 35 is deepest tint you can legally get here, in tn.

I had my 2000 300M in a few weeks ago for a few things -- one of them the infamous 300M left drift. They diagnosed a radial pull and rotated the tires...problem solved until yesterday, when I noticed the drift began again. It's particularly noticeable on the freeway, where I have to hold the steering wheel to the right to offset the drift.

This has been a frustrating thing for many of us...is it the alignment, the goodyears, balancing...where do you start? The professionally trained 5* has the answer -- the crown in the road. However, they have been unable to explain to me why my car always drifts left, whether I'm on the left or right side of the crown...

Does moving the tires around help or do I just need to replace the goodyears? And if it is the goodyears, why are they a problem only on the 300M?

    Just venting my frustration...
  • oneblackhorseoneblackhorse Member Posts: 18
All Nice colors! I especially like the deep cranberry one. If I get one, I will probably get the silver color...it just has a sleeker look to me. Definately with the sandstone interior. Thanks for helping me solve that one!
