Here's what I have done with my setup. I knew that the 6x9s (and the door subs too for that matter) wouldn't be able to handle the low frequencies at high volume levels without bottoming out. I actually have the output frequency on the amp set very low, and the bass boost high for one specific reason. My bass gets to a level that is approaching the limits of the sub's capabilities with my factory head unit's bass slider set just above midway. I use this to fine tune the level of bass coming from my subwoofer. With this control relative low, the door and deck subs don't have to fret trying to produce that really low bass (hence they sound cleaner), but my sub still has all the low frequencies it needs to thump like everything. It works out perfectly in the end. No distortion even at high levels from the factory speakers, and a nice (and variable) amount of low end to supplement the factory system. It sounds really good. I will most likely have a custom box made for a pair of Cerwin-Vega 10 or 12" subs and put it in the trunk (I have been using Cerwin-Vega speakers for car and home use for 16 years and I believe that they are one of the finest, most efficient, hardest rockin' subs around!). Don't be afraid of too much power. You'll need it to drive the sound through those rear seats. I even briefly pondered a trick sub box that would port all the sound through an opening that would sit flush against the back seat. I would put the rear arm rest down after I cut out the hard seat back material behind it and replaced it with a frame covered in speaker cloth. That would have been a creative way to get bass into the cabin without driving it through with brute force like I am doing now. Six of one, half-dozen of the other I guess. DC should have mounted an amped 10" sub into the deck between the 6x9 speakers, then added a midrange and tweeter to the deck speakers. That would have been a really killer factory setup! Hey DC...are you listening? I'm available (for a fee) for consultation on the 300N! ;-)

Torque is either foot-lbs or inch-lbs. 25 ft-lbs seems too high and 25 in-lbs seems too low for a drain plug in aluminum threads. I guess someone needs to check the service manual. If I remember correctly, the transmission pan bolts are 80 in-lbs.

    Very funny sibe.... : )
By the way how much are Dylithium Crystals going for in your part of the world?
  • dustinnewtondustinnewton Member Posts: 242
Service manual says to torque the oil pan drain plug to 250 in/lbs or 28Nm.

She most likely would have told you the same thing if she had seen the chips in person. I hope they do something for you, but I wouldn't get my hopes up too high UNLESS you called the corporate offices in Auburn Hills! That was where I got the MOST satisfaction. It wasn't from the "5-STARS" or the factory reps. I had chips on my hood the very first week I had the car. That was in June of 98 driving on regular paved roads and on I-95. I still say it's the sloping hood more then the paint job.

    sleepymw-

Couldn't remember exactly what the problem was. I guess with 5(?) kids things can get a little hectic. ;-)) Sorry it didn't work out. Hold on to that number for future use. I still have it in case you misplaced it. The Acura is great! I have over 4,700 miles on it since 3/28/01! I NEVER drive that much in such a short period of time. I just love to get in it and drive! I'm like the guy in their TV commercial who gets in his Acura in NY and ends up in MAINE in a restaurant. The counter guy asks him if he's there on vacation. The Acura guy says NO- just lunch! LOL... That's me! Only one visit to the dealer so far for an oil change that was only $9.99! NEVER expected that. Thought for sure it would be more like $29.99.

Still seeing anywhere from 2-4 300's a day now. When I had Christine, I never saw that many in a week. They still make my head turn, but...........

There is an easy way to avoid this problem...HAVE THE DEALER DO IT!
I have a lifetime wheel balance & rotate at my 5* so I have him change the oil and rotate the tires (he didn't know I have 5 wheels...heh heh) every 5,000 miles. It takes about an hour, and I go down the block for breakfast while I wait.
If there is a problem, like a stripped plug, it's HIS problem, not mine!

I have been participating in this discussion since ~5/99. I purchased a '99 Platinum 300M w/roof hole, shiny wheels and boombox stereo 6/99. This morning the Platinum Bullet turned 24,000 miles! The only work I've needed done is the replacement of 2 window motors under warranty, of course. If the other two are going to go, I hope it's within the next 12,000 miles. I also had to replace the windshield this spring, not the car's fault of course.

Anywho, I continue to enjoy this wonderful car. As is oft mentioned, I believe its forte to be high speed cruising with ample power in the upper revs. Smooth, stable and powerful at 60, 70, 80, 90mph....
Highs continue to be STYLING (those who disagree are just wrong!), good handling and power, decent mpg (overall about 21 using 87. Mostly local driving). Comfort, room and value. The only low is build quality not quite up to the Japaneese or Europen competitors. However, nothing has fallen off or is rattling. Just uneven panel gaps. And a little less road noise would be nice, but I believe that has been addressed with each new model year.
With the reliability I've experienced and read about I'm hoping that with the new LH cars (introduced in '98, I believe), Chrysler has opened a new chapter in it's book of reliability. I would, and have, reccomended this car (and it's relatives) to anyone looking for a great car and value. How can Chrysler be losing so much money with such a nice range of automobiles???

Here's to the next 24,000 miles. I hope y'all continue to enjoy your Ms as much as I do mine. Stock or modified!!!

'21 Dark Blue/Black Audi A7 PHEV (mine); '22 White/Beige BMW X3 (hers); '20 Estoril Blue/Oyster BMW M240xi 'Vert (Ours, read: hers in 'vert weather; mine during Nor'easters...)

All four weatherstrips replaced. It looks like a slightly different design than the ones that fell off (literally, one fell off!).

The outside drivers door window trim behind and just below the window always bulged out, and was fixed. It was an annoying thing to see in the drivers mirror.

The drivers inside door panel was replaced. I don't see any extra hole as has been reported here -- whoever has the extra hole in their replacement panel, exactly where is it?

The delaminating trunk CHRYSLER lettering is gone. Now I have two large and one small sets of new, unused lettering.

They were able to find the squeaking in the front end and replaced the bearings on the tops of the two front struts, and sway linkages. They had never encountered this before, so keep this in mind if your front end ever starts squeaking as you turn the steering wheel.

The only things I paid for were an oil change, tire rotation, and part of the 3-day car rental, which ended up being the bulk of my bill.

The size of the torx on the TB are 25 I believe, they might be 20, but I'm pretty sure they're 25. I just had it off last night too, I took it out and just to be sure it was all polished, I took some more emry cloth and then some rubbing compund to it. =) Just making sure all the bases are covered. And I just put in some Bosch +4 plugs, we'll see if they help at all, I'm looking for any MPG increase.

    Hope that helps!

I don't know what it is with this car, maybe it just doesn't like us or something. Though, no matter what, I continue to love the piece of art, more and more things are starting to get annoying and worrisome. After purchasing the car last year on October 18, we have, to date, logged a little over 10,000 miles. Reactions are mixed but spilt about 50/50.

As most of you already know, we still have some rattles and creaks in different areas all around the car. They are, at most, just annoyances but should not even exist in a car that costs this much. We've already been to the dealer 3 times about the noises but no fix is in sight, just turn the radio up and tune them out I guess. Then, are the shrunken weatherstripping on all the doors and the tapping lifters at start-up. We still haven't had a chance to get the rubber strips replaced and as for the tapping, I don't know whether to even bother with it--the problem just seems too common and with no known fix, I really don't believe that any local dealer would be able to do anything. The noise still worries us though, do you think it is causing or will cause any damage inside the engine?

But then are the recent issues. Just this evening, I heard, very clear and loud, a kind of one-time pop or tap (doesn't really describe it well at all, but I'm at a loss for words) or some other strange-sounding noise along with the clicky tapping when the car was started. Loud enough in fact that I heard it inside the car, over everything else, with all the windows shut. I asked my wife and she said, "Oh yeah, I've heard that the last few days but just tried to ignore it. Just as long as it starts and moves...".

Coming home, then, we almost wrecked a few times because the windshield would not un-fog. It was about 75 degrees outside and muggy, but no matter what we tried, the windshield refused to clear. Have any of you had similar experiances? I can almost swear something is wrong with the HVAC system because it has had no problems doing anything like this before.

Finally, though we got home. Such a nice, calm, smooth, and relaxing 20-minute drive home from the beach--almost good enough to make you forget some of the problems (or at least it works that way for me). My wife, though, who this car belongs too is starting to get really angry. She's always telling me that she didn't need to pay $30 grand for a chintzy piece of crap--that's what she calls the car. More and more, I am starting to see where she is coming from but I will always love the M. Well, enough chit chat, I'm going to bed.

If anyone wants to grab up a TB for modifying, here is a bargain (I think). These go for min $180 new. I'm wondering if it's one of us 300M owners or our Intrepid cousins offering this.

Well, as they say, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

After seeing no sign of the chrome shifter I ordered on the 8th, I quintuple-checked with Mechanicsville Dodge. Finally they realized that, yes indeed, they were sending me an all-leather one. Needless to say, I cancelled my order.

    Caveat emptor.

It is not mine, but may consider it if this (68mm)one continues to be OK. Of course you have to add shipping to this price. OEM doesn't charge for shipping.

Why do you people buy this crap. I think you should make a visit to your local Honda, Toyota or Nissan dealer. Your patriotism in buying American crap is stripping your wallets. Put your pride aside and look at your wallet. 30K for a Chrysler is way too much. I guess its true what they say, theres a sucker born everyday.
  • sdmike2sdmike2 Member Posts: 2,909
Go play on the freeway. This is my first car from an american manufacturer (my 6th overall) and I couldn't be happier with my decision. Have you ever seen a 300M? Ever driven one? What do you drive (so we can make fun of you)?
  • 300michael300michael Member Posts: 1,815
So far my M has been to the shop 0 times in 2.5 years. My Honda CRV has been to the shop one time for a repear, in 1.5 years. Both are driven equaly, So far not recalls on eather one but my friends Acura has had his recalled already after only a year. So don't talk to me about quality. Besides my Chrysler is cheaper to maintain too.

Chrysler Windsor convertible parallel parked on a busy Boston street---This car was in mint condition with the top down. Wish I had a camera. Cant believe someone can trust leaving a car like that with the top down on a busy city street. Perfect inside and out---light blue with white interior. Chrysler sure knew how to build cars with style even back in the 50's. I hear there is a Chrysler show sometime soon in the Conn area. That would make a nice meeting spot for 300 M'ers.
  • easyrider300measyrider300m Member Posts: 1,116
there is and antique auto show on July 8th in Dedham, MAssachusetts at the Endicott Estate--over 1000 cars in the show. Last year a saw a couple of 300 letter cars and a couple of Windsors. Mark your calendar if you live anywhere near the show--its one of the biggest in the area.

You've probably mentioned your weatherstripping half a dozen times over the past three or four months, but you've never taken your car in to get it fixed. Everyone else who has experienced this has had it easily fixed by his dealer. If it's not important enough to you to get it fixed, why do you keep posting about it?
  • phases78phases78 Member Posts: 471
i have just found out that the shop where i got my duals put on here in clarksville, does everything! exhaust, intake, tb mods, computer analasis, hydrolics (no thanks), air suspension, he said "you name it, I'll do it"

    my wife said "oh !?@($#"

i believe theres was a 99 as well. still under warrentee? even if not id take it to a 5* are at least give it a shot.. good luck, keep us informed.

  • phases78phases78 Member Posts: 471
okay i just read your other msg in the recalls board... so i guess everytying i just mention has been tryed lol. if it were my car, id call DC directly and raise all heck (heck eh?). u never know, some ppl tend to get nice results when they do that.. cuz even if it is outa warentee, that shouldnt be happening!
  • bamabellbamabell Member Posts: 5
I did take it to 2 different 5*s. The first cracked happened around 50,000miles on the right side of the air bag on the passenger's dash. This past April 01 it appeared on the left side. Chrysler's 1-800 number was not any help. They want to say it is from the sun. NO WAY!! The dealerships will not do anything because Chrysler will not do anything.

it's better to just ignore the sort of drop-by comment that has stirred up some of you than it is to aggravate the situation and prolong the problem by responding.

In any case, let's remember the part of the TOU that says "I understand that civility and respect underlie the success of an on-line community such as Town Hall" and continue to discuss the vehicle rather than each other.

    Thanks.

Okay, I happen to be a fan of the wood accented steering wheel on the 2001 M.

Does anyone know if there is a quality overlay or "mod" available for the 2000 model?

I went to wooddash.com, but they don't have anything for the steering wheel.

Also, changing my vanity plate from DVYNE M, to "5* GUY" (Five Star Guy). In California, you can now get symbols (such as a heart, star, plus sign, or even a hand).

I thought this combination had a perfect double meaning, for me and the car.

If you're in So. Cal, watch for me!

I haven't seen anything but the leather sew on cover which I have. I also was looking into the wood rig. So far I haven't found one.

You can get a 25% discount on a Chrysler extended warranty from:
    Melton Chrysler
    Claymore, OK
    800-535-2952
    ask for Lori Kruis
Anothe benefit is no sales tak if you live outside OK.
I put it on a credit card and rec'd the official Chrysler warranty papers and card in about 10 days.
One caveat: Check all the deductible options, they have a big effert on the price. I paid $630 for a $0.00 deductible, 3yr, 60,000 miles Maximum Care plan.

sorry but I like your old plate better--DVYNE M, . 5*Guy just doesnt cut it unless you own a chrysler dealership---to each his own--my humble opinion of course--I'll stick with my low number plate, thank you--those are hard to get around here unless you know some politician--glad I replaced the weatherstip--dont have to worry about leaks and wind noise has been reduced--now if they can just staighten out my climate control--Hemadog--are pics up yet--link please
  • lalarrylalarry Member Posts: 56
I wasn't even thinking about the Chrysler 5 Star thing when I came up with the plate.. I was thinking around the "5 star hotel, 5 star restaurant" stuff, and being the all-around wonderful guy everyone tells me I am, came up with 5 Star Guy. Coincidently, the plate will be on a Chrysler, hence the double meaning ....how clever (or lucky) am I??????

Anyone in California wanting DVYNE M, it'll be available again in about a month.

I like it. Was it a fiberglass add-on or actually taken from a Mustang hood? Have you figured out the ducting for the ram air yet??
  • sdmike2sdmike2 Member Posts: 2,909
Standard plate or are you going with a special interest jobbie? Oh, beware of wives. My wife makes fun of me by mispronouncing "BIGREDM" (my plate). Phoenetically, she calls it "Bye Gredum". Gonna have to give her a good spanking one of these days. lol
  • beach15beach15 Member Posts: 1,305
I know I have probably posted this before but lately all we have been getting is about 21.8 MPG. So a few days ago I pressed reset and today when I checked it, the screen read 19.7! It's probably because it is driven by a lead foot everyday but still, this seems a little bad. What is the worst mileage anyone has gotten in their M?

Now the last few days, we have been getting some strange noises at start-up. For the last few months, it has been the common tapping lifter noise but now there is an addition. After the key is turned, the engine now makes a rather loud knocking sound that is heard along with the lifters. I'm getting a little worried that we'll be having some major problems in the near future. Anyone know what this may be?

denverm- I know that I tend to "re-post" things sometimes, but I don't do it on purpose. As for the weatherstripping, we really haven't had a chance to get them replaced but for you and everyone else on this boards sake (yeah, like I care!), I'll try not to talk about them again.
  • phases78phases78 Member Posts: 471
    anyone wanna top 15.3? heh.
  • easyrider300measyrider300m Member Posts: 1,116
I presently am getting 17.3 over the last 3 tankfuls---I do 40% city, 60% highway miles---never averaged very much higher in 20k miles of driving---I am an "easyrider"--not a heavy foot---straight highway no turnoff and I might average 25-26mph---my last car only averaged 15.5 all around so I am doing better than that with the M

Here's a new one for me - got an over enthusiastic gas station attendant and he filled me up to the top - since then the gas gauge has been going crazy - dropping suddenly from the top - all the way down and the gas pump light comes on and the bell rings - intermittent up and down, every few seconds. The bell is annoying - the digital miles to empty readout seems to be working fine. Has this happened to anyone? I'll call the dealer to schedule service. Thanks- Steve
