Love having the CD changer in the car - I hardly care for the radio any more, and only change CDs every weekend (10-15 minute commute, each way)!

U2: yes, their latest album is in very heavy rotation in the Pro.
Rap: yes, more old skool than new, but Snoop is alright (excuse me, 'aiight')
Alternative: Jane's Addiction, REM, blah, blah, blah
Dance: Chicago-influenced house
Classical: just about anything...especially Brahms and Mahler
Country: sorry, Meade, just doesn't do it for me.
As for music, I got stuck in traffic this morning and went all the way around on the the mix CD currently in the player. I pretty much always listen to either NPR or mix CDs. Today's mix was:
Perfect Circle: Judith, New Order: Rock The Shack, Simple Minds: Killing Andy Warhol, Psychedelic Furs: Love My Way, Peter Murphy: All Night Long, Tool: Ticks & Leeches, Curve: Chainmail, Tears for Fears: Raoul and the Kings of Spain, Afro Celt Sound System: Whirl-Y-Reel 2 (Folk Police Mix), Garbage: Cherry Lips, Psychedelic Furs: Danger, Crystal Method: Name of the Game, Fixx: Freeman, OMD: Joan of Arc (Maid of Orleans), Enigma: T.N.T. for the Brain (Midnight Man Mix)
NPR in the morning.
Dance tunes in the afternoon (even Disco)...great for taking those turns.
For long drives, I prefer classical, ballads and jazz.
besides, if we don't drive to work, how do we get any broadband internet access so we can come here and waste time

I don't usually drive to work and I have broadband internet access......
and Mazdafun: what dance?
I'm always looking for new dance stuff...
Me Tooo.......
Oh NPR and the new U2 album. My commute is so short I don't really get to listen to anything. (7 min)
But thats all you are getting with CR because its a survey. They dont go out and actually measure anything. They rely on what amounts to consumer opnion. The only difference is that you get a collection of antedotes and they turn it into red or black dots. Dont get me wrong because I know there is some value in it but not any more, and probably less, than going to a good local independent mechanic and asking which cars he/she thinks hold up well or are better built (and why). The why part is important. It usually tells you if they know what they are talking about. There is no such filter for CR.
When we lived in Philadelphia at 18th and JFK in the Calton House (I think its now the Sterling) parking was $200/month in 1998. Rent was $1100 for a small 1 bedroom which is cheap for that area. Its probably at $250 for parking now. We parked our car 40 miles away at my brother in laws place for free and took a train there when we needed it. It was annoying but then we could afford insurance and gas.
As mentionned before, Dinu (that would be me)listens to a wide variety of stuff. While I was lost most of the time when you all posted what CDs you have in your car, here's my rotation. If a title has a "/", it's a Dinu-made disc.
*Joee/Bon Jovi (Gino Beats -vs- Great Rock)
*Romanian dance music
*Enigma/Yanni (great to "test" your speakers)
*Alexia
*Euromix 5,6
*Freestyle Frenzy 1,2,3
*That Cuban CD (Tim: May 10 guaranteed)
*Shaggy/Latin Beats
*Planet Freestyle 4
*Bob Marley: One Love: The very best of B.M.
*Ace of Base: Cruel Summer
*Stevie B: The greatest hits
*Dinu-made 80s mix
*DaRude (Sandstorm - the one that got eaten by the CD and they never found it)
*Azul-Azul (La Bomba - Great song from Cuba 2000)
*Goo-Goo Dolls (on trips to Mtl only)
Z103.5 (my all-time fav. station), MIX 99.9, CHUM FM 104.5, KISS 98.5 BUFFALO on the radio. No KISS92 for me!

PS: I hope you're ALL lost now
Uhhh...Sorry, I don't mean to insult your musical tastes...hehehehehehhe
Just got my Cars of 2002 Edition in the mail.
How can CR rank the Focus higher than the Civic or PRO, but when you look at the Focus individually they have a "not recommended" comment? Isn't this an oxymorom?

+ songs from Intonnation
It's based on old freestyle. Personally I like dance (euro, freestyle) a lot. I know it;s only popular in Toronto and a little in Montreal, while the rest of Canada is hooked on rock. While I don't bash rock (I like Bon Jovi, Smashing pumkins, Collective Soul, Goo Goo Dolls, 80s rock), I just can't listen to it (except for Bon Jovi) for more than 1-2 songs max.
Oh well...

Question: I have been driving the PRO since january as much as I drove it since July. Same trips, same frequency. As you might remember, I was freaking out at the mileage I have on it so far. I noticed the odo stil records my trips, but hasn't changed as fast as before. What could be causing it? As I said same trips, same frequency, but VERY different mileage logged on the odometer. Any ideas? And no Meade, it's not because it just froze overnight

jbollt: Where you at? It was 80 degrees and sunny in southern New Mexico today.
But I'll take the average response on a well-designed questionnaire given to thousands over any one person's anecdotal evidence any day of the week. Until someone does provide large-scale measurement that's more direct, it's probably the best data out there.

The idea of subjective reporting being unreliable is not that easy to support. If a toyota owner expects his car to be reliable, does it mean he will ignore problems because he doesn't expect them, or does it mean he will be hyper-aware of any imperfections. BMW owners who have high expectations of their cars may notice small problems that most cavalier owners may ignore, but then the BMW might therefore get maintainence before a small problem becomes a big one. I think the these subjective innacuracies tend to cancel themselves on average.
As for the focus, CR's ratings are based on test results; they liked the focus. they don;t recommend the car because of poor reliability [not part of the test]. This makes sense to me.
There are areas where i don't think CR is very useful. They seem oblivious to the finer points of audio equipment. their tests just don't measure the important values.
Their reports on computers are much to cursory to be useful. better off reading PC World or something similar, even though their coverage is obviously skewed by the advertisers.
Mine will not let me scroll up 20 messages either. It seems all the boards are starting at a specific spot, and not where you left off reading like they usually do. Weird.
