The only way a speaker can fry an amp is if the impedance is too low. This can happen if too many speakers are wired to one power amp or unusually low impedance speakers are used [4-8 ohms is typical]. It's much more likely for a power amp to blow out a speaker [as most of us probably know].

You're making me feel like a real slacker...I was going to wash the car today...well, maybe it's not too late...I'll hit the drive thru place.

There. Was this post boring enough? Still, we're doing pretty well with the post count, considering it's a Saturday :)
  • number42number42 Member Posts: 67
    Absolutely :)
and since my wife has volunteered to keep the inside clean (Honest!) it should stay with that new car smell for a while.
  • pjd58pjd58 Member Posts: 366
Erik.........I have the same deal with my Wife, I wash the outside of both of our cars and she takes care of the inside. Not quite fair since my Protege's interior is spotless(always) and I have to wash her van(MPV). I.m kinda like Larry and enjoy detailing my Protege, nothing like a freshly waxed car. I hate when my car is dirty. I waxed(Zymol)my 01 LX 2.0 last week and it looks better than the day I took delivery.

I grew up on Long Island and know what you mean about New Yorker's and their horn obsession:)

Good luck with your new Pro!

Okay, let me keep this on topic....um, got in my PROTEGE and drove to Tower Records this evening...had to pick up a couple of CD's as a birthday gift for a friend. (and of course, got something for myself, too...some new trance mix...not too bad, but of course I don't remember what it is right now. It's down in the PROTEGE).

Anyway, while I was at the store, I was reminded of one of my favorite dance CD's and wondered if you had ever heard of it...group called Sunscreem, the album is O3. Came out in 1993, when you were still a baby :)

Anyway, it's kind ravey, kind of trancey, kind of techno-y...if you don't have it, you should DEFINITELY get it.

Hope the school work is going well!

without repeating yourself. Know what I mean guys? ;) There's only so much one can say about a Pro without years of experience buying Mazdas.

One thing, though, your comments about upgrading the speakers is providing me with a good reference manual if I decide to do that. I copy each post and paste it into my word processor for printing later.

    Fowler:

I do the same thing...on my hard drive at work (which is where I do my SERIOUS Edmunds surfing :), I have files of people's responses to my questions about overdrive, and cleaning the Coke out of my floor mats ;)
  • elec3elec3 Member Posts: 160
Dale: Never heard of that one. I like trance-y electronic music but I have a hard time finding stuff I like. I like Sasha & Digweed and Oakenfold fairly well but the style I really like is a little more Euro. Fairly high bpm (like 140-180) and a lot of synth effects (strings and stuff like that). I have an album by PF Project that I really love but haven't been able to find much else like it. Check out Minister on MP3.com to see (kind of) the style I like.

As for the Protege, I just hit 5000 miles tonight. The engine seems to be loosened up pretty well and is fairly smooth when warm. Gas mileage is still just ok. I haven't tracked it real closely in a while, but it's probably about time again. I think I'm on the lower end of the scale but that could be altitude + automatic + the way I drive. Not gonna get the scratch-o-doom fixed for a while. I don't have to worry about it rusting down here where humidity is like 15%, so I'll just leave it until I can afford to fix it. All the fun people who like to race were not out tonight, so I just went to get my dinner and came home. Oh well, I've got a kickin' party to get to in about an hour or two. Zoom on! :)
  • chicagoprochicagopro Member Posts: 1,009
Please tell me that you're not into street racing!!! Shame on you if you are!

    Okay, lecture over.

Given your preferred bpm, not sure if you would like Sunscreem...I think it's towards the low end of what you mentioned. But there are a couple of tracks on there that totally kick ---, no matter what kind of music you like.

Almost bought Oakenfeld tonight, but what wasn't sure which one to get. It's been too long since I've been out to any clubs where they played decent music, and the whole MP3 thing has just sort of passed me by. Doesn't help that my sound card is all messed up, too. In fact, the only place I can listen to music right now is in the PROTEGE. (there...still on topic, host pat)

Have fun at the party, and drive safely!

Does anyone know if there is a drain plug on the 1.6L (2000) auto tranny? I would like to do a simple drain and fill. I know I wont get all of the ATF out, but it is better than nothing. Also, is it OK to mix synthetic ATF with conventional ATF?

I asked a question a few posts back about wheel bearings on the Mazda Protege. Does anyone know if the bearings are sealed on the 2000 models?

I had hoped since there was a tremendous amount of traffic in this area that the question would be answered more quickly than in the maintenance section. Thanks.
  • chicagoprochicagopro Member Posts: 1,009
Sometimes it's kind of quiet in here on the weekends...you'll probably be better off re-asking your question tomorrow morning, when many of the more knowledgeable regulars are at 'work' surfing Edmunds.

(and no, I'm not dissing anyone here right now...I'm sure you're all big gear heads, too. So if you know about wheel bearings, answer poor Curt's question already! :)
  • dinu01dinu01 Member Posts: 2,586
As Dale said, check Monday afternoon. I'm sure someone has your answer. I personally have no clue.

pjd58: I noticed you changed your flag to RO. Are you Romanian?
  • elec3elec3 Member Posts: 160
I'm not a big fan of buying CDs anyway - I only buy the ones I really want since they're so expensive. Usually I burn mixes to listen to in the PROTEGE. MP3.com has been a good resource though it would be more useful to me if I had a faster net connection here. It's no fun to download a song for a half hour only to find out you don't like it and have to delete it.

As for street racing, it's not that I'm into it, it's that there are a lot of people here who drive...ahem, Eurosports and they are all over the place on weekends. It's impossible to go out without seeing a few and usually they want to race me (since I have what I think is the only Pro5 in town, they don't really know how fast it is, and it looks sort of...ahem, pre-Euro'ed from the factory, if you will). If you're picturing me wearing goggles and a crash helmet in my Protege5 at the drag strip, that's not it at all. It's more like some friendly playing around town.
  • pjd58pjd58 Member Posts: 366
No, I'm not Romanian, my 5 year old boy is. We adopted him from Bucharest 2 years ago. Changed the flag for a short while to celebrate our 2 year anniversary with him.
  • dinu01dinu01 Member Posts: 2,586
Well Happy Anniversary in that case! How's he liking ZOOM-ZOOMing in the PRO and MPV? If you need any type of Romania-related info feel free to ask me anytime (although I'm sure you learned a lot during the adoption process).

Thanks for the offer. We have quite a bit of information about Romania. My Wife and I were in Romania for a week and traveled to Brasov(sp) a beautiful area. Most of our stay was in Bucharest. The Romanian people were very friendly and made our stay pleasant. Our son has no memory of Romania, but we will keep him informed of his heritage. He is truly an All-American kid now. He enjoys my Wife's MPV since he sits higher and can see the outside better. Although he likes my Protege's color(mill red) better.

Yes, it can be kinda of dead here on the weekends, nonetheless; try re-posting your questions on Monday. Better yet, Maltb a regular at many many topics here at Town Hall, should be able to help both of you. He can share a lot of info and is darn knowledgeable in many mechanical aspects of Mazda vehicles. He has a public e-mail available in his Town Hall Profile. Why not try e-mailing him directly, for a quicker response? Hope this helps! :-)

that eventhough I don't own a Pro, I've been following this board for close to a year now and it's a real hoot. Y'all can be real funny at times and but also quite stinging also. Because of y'all, I even went and test drove a Pro and was quite impressed. The seat were especially comfortable, blew my Corolla away! When the time comes, I will definitely check out the Pro.
Thanks for all the entertainment on this forum, I feel like I do indeed know some of y'all.
Hoping to be zoom zooming one day soon. Take care and G-d bless.

Nice to hear from a lurker! Don't worry about the stings...it seems we're all still friends regardless. :)

Good luck on your car search!

Larry: Thanks for your kind words! We have 2 boys...Matt 9 & Anthony 5 they keep me busy....coaching baseball & T-ball, playing hockey, homework etc. I'm sure you know the routine. We love our Mazdas, both have been flawless.

Sandman: Welcome! I visit many boards on Edmunds and by far this group is the best. We are kinda like an extended family, we may disagree somtime, but we have each other's back.

They had a yellow wagon of that thing parked in the lot Friday night. They look kinda funny. But i think it'll do at least better than thet Esteem. Not as nice lookin' as most other cars in the segment though.

I find that from the front, it looks very similar to the new Generation Honda Civics and Acura 1.7EL (only in Canada). The hatchback from the rear is somewhat focus like. Not a very original design all together.

I've heard rumors that Mazda is going to come out with a turbo MP3 in the States. Any truth to the rumor? (Sorry if this has been discussed before. There are too many old messages, and the board search tool sucks.)

I have noticed that my Dunlop SP Sport 5000m tires have started behaving differently when the roads are wet. Specifically, at traffic lights, I get wheel spin on the stop lines. They didn't used to do this. I have tried cutting back on the throttle to no avail. They still seem to corner excellently in the wet, but the wheel spin is annoying. I keep my pressure at 35 psi almost religiously, so I don't think it is that. If it gets worse, I may have to upgrade my tires sooner rather than later. I was hoping to get 30k out of them.
  • mdaffronmdaffron Member Posts: 4,421
The 5000s and the Sport A2s are definitely two different tires. You can see that just from the difference in tread design. You should take a look at the Sport A2s if you're looking for a replacement.

Just did the double-wash hand wax job Saturday. I cannot believe how she shines. It's been so long since I've had a new car. Shiny outside and smells new inside. Of course, that's also why we had all this messy snow/rain this morning here in NY.

I tried the cruise control for the first time this weekend, but it's dead. The manual said to not use it for the first 600 miles. I'm well past that but nothing is happening. I turned the power on, was going 55-60 but when I set the speed the system does not engage. Anyone else have this problem? I checked all fuses inside the cabin and under the hood and all are fine.

I'm calling the dealership this am to schedule an appearance.

Well, I think it was capable of working for the first 600 miles -- they just didn't want you to because they wanted you to vary your speed during the break-in period.

Are you sure you're operating it correctly? You have to turn it on first -- then set the speed.

    Meade
  • rbrooks3rbrooks3 Member Posts: 174
I double checked because I asusmed I was doing something wrong. First I turn on the "main" (power) switch and then try to set the speed. Nothing happens. I've re-read the manual several times. It's an odd system not to work at all because they're very simple systems.

I'll have to have the dealer check it out along with the buring oil smell that seems to be there after long drives of 50 or more miles. I couldn't see any smoke or any leaks though and I haven't had to add any oil yet so it wasn't spilled.

I've noticed that too with my dunlops, if I'm just a bit heavy on the throttle when wet they spin, but otherwise they are fine in wet weather. I've got a 5spd which makes it a bit more tricky as well sometimes. It doesn't happen all the time. I chalk it up to oil on the road and also if your problem might be if your wheels are on the paint line, that stuff is slick when wet. I've done it.

    Steve
  • sfratsfrat Member Posts: 208
that the potential for spin is much greater on wet roads anyway. Also, Meade's tires are brand new, they're at their best. Mine have 11k miles on them, not sure about you.

Mr. Old Head shamed me into washing my car on Saturday...took it to one of those drive-thru, touchless places (okay, now he's going to make me REALLY ashamed because I didn't spend hours on it myself :)

Anyway, decided to include the undercarriage wash option as well, since it had been a while. Got my receipt from the bullet-proof lady, drove around to the car wash entrance, lowered my window to enter my receipt code into the keypad, drove into the little car wash hut when the door opened.

The careful reader will note that Dale has not yet mentioned raising her window back up.

That would be because she didn't. And when did she notice this minor detail?

Right about the time she drove over the undercarriage spray jets and got a faceful of gosh-only-knows what.

The Edmunds Membership Agreement prevents me from typing what came out of my mouth at that moment, but use your imagination.

Sigh...sometimes I feel like I'm trapped in an "I Love Lucy" episode.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
My Dunlops (or any tires for that matter) spin on the white strips on the road at the crosswalks. That stuff is very slick when wet. Traction control would take that problem away completely (I don't have it now).

You are suppose to wash your face at home, not at the car wash. :) Hope everything was ok though. Look at it this way, at least it wasn't a road puddle splashing from a truck that washed your face. :)

And did the interior get wet? Maybe it washed the Coke stain away? :) Just kidding.

Paul: unfortunately, the Coke spill was on the passenger side...too bad I didn't have that window open, as well. Some water on the interior, mostly on my coat and face. Seemed to be good for cleaning my glasses, but kind of stung on my skin. Probably won't be adding undercarriage wash to my beauty regimen. :)

    General Motors and Microsoft Corporation:
For those of you who have had experience with computers and their glitches and idiosyncrasies, and downright illogical workings, you'll appreciate the following.
At a recent computer Expo (COMDEX), Bill Gates reportedly compared the computer industry with the auto industry and stated:"If GM had kept up with the technology like the computer industry has, we would all be driving $25.00 cars that got 1,000 miles to the gallon.

In response to Bill's comments, General Motors issued
a press release stating: "If GM had developed technology
like Microsoft, we would all be driving cars with the
    following characteristics:-
    1. For no reason whatsoever, your car would crash twice a day.
    2. Every time they repainted the lines in the road, you would have to buy a new car.
    3. Occasionally your car would die on the freeway for no reason. You would have to pull over to the side of the road, close all of the car windows, shut it off, restart it, and reopen the windows before you could continue. For some reason you would simply accept this.
    4. Occasionally, executing a maneuver such as a left turn would cause your car to shut down and refuse to restart, in which case you would have to reinstall the engine.
    5. Only one person at a time could use the car unless you bought CarNT, but then you would have to buy more seats.
    6. Macintosh would make a car that was powered by the sun, was reliable,> five times as fast and twice as easy to drive, but would only run on five percent of the roads.
    7. The oil, water temperature, and alternator warning lights would all be replaced by a single General Protection Fault warning light.
    8. New seats would force everyone to have the same sized butt.
    9. The airbag system would ask are you SURE?, before deploying.
    10. Occasionally, for no reason whatsoever, your car would lock you out and refuse to let you in until you simultaneously lifted the door handle, turned the key and grabbed hold of the radio antenna.
    11. GM would require all car buyers to also purchase a deluxe set of Rand McNally Road maps (now a GM subsidiary), even though they neither need nor want them. Attempting to delete this option would immediately cause the car's performance to diminish by 50% or more. Moreover, GM would become a target for investigation by the Justice Dept.
    12. Every time GM introduced a new car, car buyers would have to learn to drive all over again because none of the controls would operate in the same manner as the old car.
    13. You'd have to press the Start button to turn the engine off.
    14. When you try to open the glove compartment, you push the button and sit and wait...and wait...and wait...then it opens.

Oddly enough, I think this is what it "actually" is like to own a GM vehicle... :)
  • chicagoprochicagopro Member Posts: 1,009
Tim: lol..hadn't seen that one before

Steve: fortunately, it wasn't a tidal wave (this is kind of a cheap car wash)...extent of water was mostly irritating vs. damaging. Definitely a valuable lesson though...I guess :)

If anyone has used their cruise control, let me know if this is an answer.

I called the dealer and they'll look at the car on Thursday, but while they made an appointment, said this could be a solution:

Once the power is on the the cruise control, and you're at the desired speed, you can't just click the "set" button. He said you need to push the "set" button and hold it for a second or a little over.

I know that I just pushed the button. That's all I've had to do on any system including my wife's MPV. But, maybe the Pro is different.

So, anyone notice if you just push the button on yours or do you have to hold it for 1-2 seconds?

I won't know the answer until I leave at 4 today so I was wondering what others have experienced.
