I think I would be at the dealer as soon as I could the day it arrives. And forwarn the dealer NO TEST DRIVES, or he can take of $100 per test drive off the price.
Best of luck, sounds like a great truck.
Hunter
gears be that much different?
Hunter, I got lots of goodies coming on mine for a price of mid-$28k. Plus GMS+4% is really close to Dealer Invoice plus $500.... which most of yawl should be able to negotiate on an ordered truck.

Gonna buy another set of wheels to mount up Studdies for winter use. Gonna put AL covers on tailgate and front of bed, gonna add a Stainless Steel piece of angle iron to the top of the front of the bed. Gonna take the rubber bed mat outta my current Silverado along with my electric brake controller.
Thinking I'm gonna be lucky to get $15k outta my '99 Silverado 1/2 ton, so this new truck's gonna cost me another $15k. Dang, need to drive this one 10 years or more.
Thinking long term of eventually running LT235/85-16 tires to slightly reduce overall gearing and give a little more ground clearance.
What'd I forget?
My 2001 Crew Cab was ordered first week of July. TPW was 1/1/01. Truck was shipped on 1/16/01. Arrived in Montana on 1/31/01. Tracked it across the heartland on www.bnsf.com. Requires the last 8 VIN numbers. Truck is surprisingly quiet and smooth. Fit and finish are excellent. Mine is Summit White. For those wondering it came with the black flairs. Tired to order new white ones from GM but they are currently out of stock. This is an 8.1 Allison with 3.73's. Truck has power to spare but gearing does seem tall. I'll post MPG on the 8.1 discussion when I fill up.
Plenty of power, in the mountains you may have to use 4th on big grades, no problem. At least, the trans doesn't 'hunt' between OD and not.
I'm looking at 255/85-16 LR 'D's for my 2500. They will give you an extra inch of ground clearance, run at 65 psi for a softer ride, and still have the same load capacity as the 245 LR 'E's.
Good luck selling your 99. No nibbles on mine. So, I will probably keep both trucks. The 2500 will keep the camper, and the 1500 will be a commuter, hauler for everybody.
PS: Post pics when your baby comes in.

also include the gauge? Can the Silverado be retrofitted with the gauge as the dash area
looks like the GMC where the gauge readout is.
The 26500 was accounting for the almost 2 grand in taxes and costs since I figured those in full on the new one. So 24500 or so trade in.
I traded a 99 3 dr with 20k miles, for a 2000 4 dr that I ORDERED that listed for 32600 which is a little more than the 99 for less than $5000 including tax out the door.
Best of luck, it is only $500
Hunter
Vortec 6000 (4.10 axle) 11.5 to 13.5 mpg
12.7 mpg avg
Vortec 8100 (3.73 axle) 9 to 15 mpg
10.8 mpg avg
Duramax 6600 (3.73 axle) 15 to 17.9 mpg
16.2 mpg avg
If you want a cost breakeven figure between the Vortec 8100 vs Duramax 6600, you spend an extra $2976 for the Duramax and you get it back after driving 113,000 mi. This is based on diesel costing about 20 cents more/gal in Alabama. If someone wants the formula for this breakeven, I can post it. Sure, the Duramax lasts longer but it really comes down what you really want and not the bucks.
I'm in the process of ordering a 2500HD CrewCab w/ Vortec 8100, 3.73 axle -- to pull a max 12,700 GVWR 5th-wheel RV. The towing guide says I can pull 13,100 to 13.300 with the 8100 + 3.73 axle.
It's a long-bed, because despite all this talk about "no problem with short-bed and FW RV" a short-bed will likely decapitate my kids in the back seat if there's ever a jackknife situation of the FW. Unless someone out there can guarantee that the FW will ALWAYS break away from the hitch -- I stick with the long-bed.

what about the 8100/4:10?
I still think the 4:10 may be overkill...but the one I drove felt good in the city and highway.
what's the RPM of an 8.1/Allison/4:10 on the highway at 75...anyone?

"Sure, the Duramax lasts longer but it really comes down what you really want and not the bucks"
I got my doubts that PU diesels really last much longer than gas engines when driven in identical situations.....
I need two complete sets of wheels for my new HD. One set to run studded snow tires for use here at 7,000' in the winter, and will run highway truck tires on the other set in the summer.
I like narrow tires, will be running either LT245/75-16 E or LT235/85-16 E range tires, which will work great with stock 2500HD wheels. Anybody out there ready to sell?
PS. Will have a set of stock painted steel wheels to sell from my '99 Silverado when I trade it in.
Thanks, Buck

I also caught a $175 difference in what his current invoice shows vs what he originally quoted. He double checked and sure enough the base price had gone up$175. He said he should be price protected on that and will check in the morning. I was surprised it only went up $175. So we'll see.
Am I the only sucker out here that bought the auxillary battery? I figured since I WAS getting the HD afterall, it sure seemed like the 'Tim Allen' thing to do."Extra Battery GOOOOOOOD, More Power ARRGHH, ARRGHH, ARRRRGGHHHHH!"
I was in a Chev dealer to look at and drive an 8.1/Allison and none in stock. They showed me a stack of special orders an inch thick for 2500HD with the 8.1/Allison. In the meanwhile they have a hundred 1500 and 2500 on the lot begging to be sold. I question GM marketing savvey.

The best part of the aux battery is that it is isolated from the main battery. You can run the 2nd battery down and still have the main battery to start the truck and then recharge the aux battery.
If anybody want a detailed instruction sheet on part numbers and installing the aux battery, I have the sheet that Vince4 wrote and can send it to anyone who wants it.

I got 12.5 mixed 6.0 4:10's 8600GVW 2500 Ex.cab
Hunter
Since you seem to know about how the Aux. Battery is wired, do you know if you can use it to jump start the truck if the main is dead? I had hoped to find something in the manual about that, but of course there isn't. Not sure whether it might hurt something? I know you could always just switch the batteries around, but jumping them would be easier. Thanks.
Roger - You should be able to jumpstart yourself with the aux battery. That is my plan if I ever need it, but the truck shuts off everything after 20 minutes, so my main cause of dead batteries is gone.
The only thing I don't like about the factory setup is the fact that they remove the passenger side fender brace to install the battery. It must have some purpose in life or it wouldn't be there. So, I got a small Odyssey battery that fit under the brace and left the brace in place.
Mike L
Thanks, John (I'm getting ready to order the same configuration)
As for dual batteries, if they're hooked up to work together like GM used to do be sure to replace BOTH at the same time. If you don't the old one will pull down the memory on the new one in no time at all.
Guess what I am driving tomorrow?

I have 5000 miles on the unit. I was getting 13.5 MPG hi way/ 12 around town, 10.0 pulling my 22ft boat with -Top at posted speeds up to 70 mph up to the first 2500 miles. Took a trip to East Texas. Round trip was 2500 miles. Got 13.5 out there from my home in NC. Brought back 4 flatbed Utility trailers with a height of 12' and a weight of 6600lbs. I ran from NC to Texas both ways on the southern route of I-20. I pulled the trailers the same as I ran out empty which was 65-75mph. My mileage coming back at this speed with this load was 7.77 mpg. These are honest numbers. I feathered the pedal on the hills and ran in Overdrive in Towing Mode part of the trip home and in Drive with towing mode part of the trip. mileage worked out the same. And now your know the rest of the story.
My dealer has contacted Tech. Assistance, they've verified that everything is working correctly but don't have any fix for this. According to Customer Assistance GM is investigating Silverado heater problems with a "Poor Heating Performance Review", but they can't tell me when or if anything will ever be done to correct this.
Is anyone else having this problem?

....I'd buy this one...but it's sunset Gold....not orange...and it's an LS.....Timmy wants an LT again....and not sure I want the 3:73's with future plans for 285's to 305's....
...and I didn't check to see if it had that bad bad bad locker!
LOL

....on the heater thing...I have a 2000 2500 LT...and it pumps out heat on both sides.....perhaps even more on the passenger side...as most cars do.
Good Luck
