the new V6 will make its way into the GC. Just when, I'm not sure. My guess is for MY'03.

Has anyone bought the rear mounted ski rack for the Liberty? Any opinions it the rear mounted versus the top mounted? Rear mounted seems easier to work with but will block visability a bit.

    Opinions?

    Hello Board,
In a quandary here. I can choose between a Liberty Sport with 27B and NO ABS for $225 UNDER the Edmunds invoice at a local dealer, or a Liberty Sport with 27B and ABS for $400 OVER invoice. Seems the dealer's trying to get rid of the non-ABS model, because he won't budge on the ABS-equipped model. Is saving @$600 worth it to get the non-ABS model at a steal, or am I short-changing myself in the safety dept? I live in northern NJ, where we get occasional blizzards and black ice in the winter. Thanks for your input.

ABS is worth every cent they charge. It's saved me several times.

    Has anyone used these together?

I have one dealer telling me they can be, and another telling me that certificate programs are not compatible with each other. I don't know if this is true or not, and I can't find anything online about it.

    Thanks,

    Eric

They shipped my Liberty on 31 Oct and it's the 12th of Nov and still nothing!! What can be taking so long? It's only around 800 miles from Detroit to upstate NY you would think they could cover 800 miles in a week or so.
  • stevek18stevek18 Member Posts: 19
I ordered a Liberty thru a dealer, and just got approved for the college graduate discount. they just need a copy of your diploma (I think it's good for at least 1 year within graduation, maybe longer) and they'll give you $400 discount. It seemed pretty easy.

Which tires would you guys put on your Liberty?
BFG 235/85QR16 Mud Terrain T/A KM or Goodyear Wrangler MT/R 235/85PR16's? Also, would either of them fit, stock? And, how big of a difference in size are these from the stock 235/70R16's?

My Liberty was shipped on 1 Nov and arrived in Mass on 9 Nov and I picked it up on 12 Nov. Special Edition mettalic green. So far so good. Not sure why the trip to Mass is shorter than to upstate NY?

    Congrats on your new addition.
I am still waiting for my Liberty LE (week #9) but was told it should be built the beginning of this week and should have it before the end of the month. We will see about that. From the time you palced your order, how long did you have to wait?

I read in the newspaper that there is a chance the Toledo plant where the Liberties are made may go on strike later this year. The union is stating the workers are working too many hours and they want a third shift added of workers who were let go. I hope this doesn't happen, but stay tuned...
  • bgolfvbgolfv Member Posts: 10
I heard there's a short cut to Mass ha ha, congrats on your new purchase. I've been told by my dealer that mine will be here this week, keeping fingers crossed!!!

Just returned from a 1100 mile round trip from NJ to OH (route 80 most of the trip). Hit some real nasty rain/sleet and wind on Thursday night, most cars were pulled over to the side of the road or hit a rest stop till the weather passed. We blazed thru. Slipped it into 4x4 Fulltime and kept on going. Avg mileage going: 19.8mpg. Avg mileage on the return (less wind) 22.1mpg. And I have to say that it was a real comfortable trip, no problems at all.

ps: now I have to get my oil changed, not sure if I'm going synthetic or regular. Will keep posted.

the new issue of Motor Trend with the 2002 SUV of the year tests and award. I think the Liberty did pretty good, and they have some great shots of it in action.

P.S. Any idea on those tires I mentioned?

I think ABS is an important feature on a vehicle.

However, there have been some studies that have shown that people are significantly more likely to die in an ABS-equipped car than in a non ABS-equipped one. I can't remember where I reviewed the study: it was on an insurance organization's web site, I think.

It was a bewildering read. In addition, most insurance companies no longer discount for ABS...

All that said, I have ABS.
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
The tires you mentioned will do better off-road, but less so on-road, assuming they'll fit. They offer a more aggressive tread, and a taller side wall.

I'd only make the change if you plan to spend a lot of time off road. I think if you spend most of your time on road, you'll regret making the change. I think your handling will suffer, perhaps quite a bit...

It will also throw off your gearing and speedometer too. So, acceleration could also suffer, and you won't get an accurate speed reading.

Forgot to mention that I used the "new grad" incentive in conjunction with another discount (family/friend of DC). They seemed to have no problems honoring more than one discount.
  • bgolfvbgolfv Member Posts: 10
Has anyone used the veteran's discount along with the family of DC discount? I'm going to try to get both if my Liberty ever comes in.
  • jimlyon1jimlyon1 Member Posts: 7
My Insurance Company was one of the first to give discounts for ABS. They were all for ABS when it was new on the scene.
Now they were one of the first Company's to drop the discounts. Also say that more deaths in ABS equiped vehicles versus non ABS vehicles.

My wife and I are about to buy a Liberty, but the dealership we've been working with claims to not be able to find a Limited with the Off-Road Group. (Seattle area). This sounds bizarre to me. Has anyone had a similar experience, or can anyone tell me if there's a reason NOT to get the Off Road Group? I'm not a serious "mudder", but we do plan on frequently taking it down rutted logging roads, to get to trailheads, etc. Thanks.

Can someone that has had their Liberty for awhile give me any idea what RPM's they are running while going about 60 mph going over a flat surface? I think mine is shifting oddly. It started after my first oil change last week. I could run 70-75 mph and only hit 2500......now at 60 mph it will be at 2500 and eventually it will shift and go back to 2000 where it ususally is at 60 mph. Am I just being paranoid or should I get this looked at??

And yes....I will be posting this in the problems area too, cause I know someone will be asking :-)
  • bgolfvbgolfv Member Posts: 10
My Liberty finally came in, will pick it up tomorrow. I was told by the dealer that since I was getting mine at the employee of DC price I was not eligible for the veteran's discount. Has anyone else been able to use these two discounts?
  • stevek18stevek18 Member Posts: 19
I would try calling a few other dealers to see if they would honor both veterans and DC employee discounts. Maybe there's a way to check directly with Jeep?

My Liberty was shipped by train on November 1st as well. I live in New York City. The darn truck has been in New Jersey, 9 miles away, since November 1st. And It still has not been taken to my dealer yet. How frustrating is that? Its taking longer for 9 miles than it did for the trip by train from Toledo. I know of 4 people in locations further away that had there Liberty's shipped the same day or after from further away that have gotten their trucks. I am frustrated beyond belief by this snails pace.
Any ideas on how to get this process moving?
  • wem003wem003 Member Posts: 10
I posted last week asking if anyone had used the college grad and military rebate together. I am getting conflicting stories from two dealers, the one that says they won't take both is about 100 miles closer and has the vehicle I want.

It seems that other people are having the same questions, does anyone know of a site where the limitations on these offers can be found?

    Thanks,

    Eric

I just got our Jeep Liberty (Silver/Dark Grey with Tope leather seats) it has 27G, sunroof, towing package, the works! My wife and I have been extremely pleased with the Jeep. It drives great! We haven’t had the leaking, pull to the right, noises or squeaks. We Love it!

The only “problem” I can see so for is that the Overdrive Off button only seems to work when the lights are turned off. Do the rest of you Liberty owners have the same behavior?

I shouldn’t be turning the Overdrive at night all that much, but if I am pulling a trailer, I may want to turn off the overdrive for hills. It doesn’t make sense to me that the overdrive will only work with the lights off.

    Any ideas?

I have always had cars were you can hear the engine "pinging" and "tinging" after it is parked, but the Liberty does even after a short trip, and quite loudly. Does anybody else have this?

Guess what.... I just got off the phone with DaimlerChrysler and the rep. told me there is an estimated ship date Nov.20th. Yippy!! My first response was about time. This is my 9th week of waiting (impatiently). I have never been impatient about anything until this I ordered this baby. The rep also told me not to expect it until the first week in December. Ahhhh.... 2 1/2 more weeks. I am going to go insane. Especially since I know the poor baby will be sitting somewhere for about a week.

    ---ERICBWAY---
What's going with your Liberty? You should call the dealer and tell them that you will gladly go and get the truck for them or at least go for the ride.

Does anyone know how recent of a grad you have to be to receive this discount??
I received my degree in May of 2000... would I be eligable for this?

  • stevek18stevek18 Member Posts: 19
I don't know DC's exact policy on the incentive, but to benchmark, here is Ford & GM's program:

    Ford:
    You're eligible if, between May 1, 1999 and January 3, 2002, you:
graduated, or will graduate, from an accredited college or graduate school with at least a bachelor degree, OR
graduated, or will graduate, from an accredited junior college, community college, nursing school or trade school, OR
are currently enrolled in graduate school.

    GM Program:
Graduates are eligible if they are within six months prior to or two years after graduation from a four-year degree program, two-year Associate's degree program or registered nursing degree. Two-year certificate programs are not eligible.
Graduate students may qualify for the program while they are enrolled in grad school or for up to two years after graduating.

I emailed "DC" about multiple incentives and the following is their response:

Thank you for your email to the DaimlerChrysler Motors Corporation regarding the $500 Military Incentive.

The information that we have indicates that the $500 Military Incentive can be used in conjunction with other incentives. It does not, however, specify what other incentives it works with and suggests that you speak with your dealer for more details.

You may wish to contact the Rebate Program Headquarters for more information regarding the compatibility of various incentives. They can be
contacted at 1-800-227-0757, Monday through Friday, 9AM-5PM, EST.
    Hope this helps!!!

I called my dealer and suddenly he has a fire under his rear. My Jeep has been sitting in New Jersey for 168 hours and in my eyes THAT IS RIDICULOUS!!! There has to be some way to expedite this. I am dying here.

cheryl3038, Thanks for checking the "OD/Off with the lights on" problem for me. That's a pretty strange problem if you ask me, but if this is the worst problem I have, then I'll be happy.

200 miles later - Loving my Liberty and enjoying every mile!

Without knowing which dealership you are using, I think that's a little silly. I did some checking from the Jeep web page on dealerships in your area (Seattle). Granted, the web page may be a little out of date (the dealership I used showed a car that had not arrived yet!) but in fact, at the first dealership I chose (Huling Bros.), there is a Limited listed with the Off Road Group. It sounds like your dealer may be trying to avoid sharing with other dealerships. The one I found is a limited, silver, tow package, off road group, overhead console, SelecTrac, tinted glass, power driver's seat and upgraded radio. No leather. Just FYI.

Actually (I just checked) they have a white one with the G package and off road and towing packages too.

Lot of the new smaller vehicles have several heat shields on the exhaust. Not at all unusual for these to pop and crack even after a short run. Irritating on a new vehicle but gives it "character" after you own it for a while. Enjoy your Liberty.

    Congrats on your new babies.....
Hopefully I too will be a proud parent of my Stone White Liberty LE, in about two weeks. I was told Tuesday the 20th was the "estimated" ship date. I am crossing my fingers.
    Again.... enjoy!!!

I just read Edmunds most wanted cars on AOL and, not suprisingly, they chose the Escape/Tribute as their most wanted SUV.

I think that there ought to be a new catagory, keep SUV for the light off-road duty cars and establish OR (for true off-road) for the trucks that are designed to do more than groceries and commutes. This new catagory would include Jeeps (naturally), Xterras, Land Rovers, etc. Maybe the ability to make the Rubicon (stock)could serve as a means of seperating the vehicles into this catagory. Why penalize a vehicle for attributes that do not serve its original design?

Thanks for the congrats. I have had her for 24 hours now and love it. Handle, style performance is all great. I have no complaints. She runs like a dream and me and the wife love her!!!

Gypsy, its worth the wait, but I hope its quick for you so you can start in on the fun.

I'm about to buy a Liberty Limited but would rather have the Sport (aluminum) wheels. Are there any Chicago Area Sport drivers that would be willing to do an even trade? Remember that you would be getting brand-new tires out of the deal.
  • gypsy116gypsy116 Member Posts: 53
Does any know if it is possible to get a tire cover that just says "Jeep there's only one" WITHOUT the smiley face or the flag? Or one that says "Jeep Liberty" in white not silver? I have been on the www.jparts.com site. i think I am being a bit picky but it is for my soon-to-be baby.
    --gypsy--
  • ericbwayericbway Member Posts: 19
I know that Jeep is now sending the Limiteds with a cover standard, and I believe that the words are in white...mine was. I am not sure about the Sports but I think they also get a tire cover standard now. At first they came naked but now I think its standard on all of them.

Call and ask your dealer first.

  • cheryl3038cheryl3038 Member Posts: 42
I got some inside scoop on the tire cover coming standard now.....they were having problems with the spare tire's chemicals dripping onto the bumper when the tire would get wet. It was making a stain on the bumper. It was either make tire covers standard or replace a $600 bumper on all the Liberty's out there. If you don't have a tire cover I'd suggest asking you dealer about it. I'm sure they'd give you one at this point.

Last month, during test conducted by autoweek, a 2wd Jeep Liberty rolled over twice while traveling approximately 40 mph. The rollover occured during AutoWeek's "hard-braking, hard-steering handling test."

Chrysler said that the rollover was due to "a variation in the friction of the pavement and the aggressive driving."

The full story can be found at www.autonews.com.

Hmm, well, sounds like we have a bit of controversy now...Didn't Ford and Mitsubishi say the same things when the Exploder and Monntero began to roll over?

Scroll down the page a bit to see the Liberty. This makes me "almost" reconsider the Liberty I ordered.
