Well, since you have it. don't beat yourself up too badly (the old concept of not crying over spillked milk?) and enjoy it. They are great vehicles and, with time, the memory of the deal will fade and you will still be enjoying the Highlander. I bought a Mazda years ago and got skunked....took me several months before I got over it; however, I kept the car for many care-free years...in 70k never even put tires or brakes on it and got a decent amount on trade when the time came. It was the best lesson I could learn about car buying and I've gotten pretty decent deals since.

    HTH. Good Luck!

We have an offer for a 2005 base Highlander 4cyl, FWD for $21,650 plus TTL (in the Midwest). It has tinted windows, mudguards, carpeted matts, and daytime running lights, Sonora Gold. MSRP is $25,534. Does this sound like a good deal? We have done no negotiating yet, this is just an email quote. Would there be room for negotiation for a price like this plus the $400 recent grad rebate?

    Thank you so much!

That's good price, but it's a price you can easily get via carsdirect.com who tack on a few hundred for themselves. So I would aim for (carsdirect.com price - $1k ) ~20,800 before TTL.

    Good luck.

I just tried to go to their web site for warranty info and I get this message:

"This domain name expired on 09/24/05 and is pending renewal or deletion"

Does anyone have the telephone number for the Iowa City Dealer who is/was selling these Toyota warranties? I'm picking up a new Hybrid Highlander tonight and would like to know if they are still offering warranties.

    Thanks for any info.

Sorry, if you read the text above the "post a message" box, you'll note that we don't allow contact information to be posted. You can ask for the name of the dealership, and then let Google be your friend.

I started checking out preowned Toyotas but walked off the lot when the salesman told me that their certified preowned Toyota prices were firm, no negotiation - anyone else have this experience? Also, does anyone know whether the certified preowned warranty transfers from one place (dealer) to another?
  • dawneedawnee Member Posts: 59
Don't know where you are looking but here there are some dealers who are firm and others who are flexible. We found several that price just below Blue Book and bought from one of these and was able to get them down a little more on their price to what we feel was a reasonable price for a nice vehicle. So if you shop around on the internet you may be able to find dealer in your area that you can work with. Check for ones that start out pricing at or below Blue Book and go from there.

    Hope this helps

    :confuse: Hello guys,
I was wondering how much I expect to pay for 05 Highlander LTD V6 with tow package, extra value package(Sunroof, JBL), tint glass, caarpet mats and shield package in Lawton OK. I have never bought a new car in my life. This is my first buying experience... Any tips suggestions ? :confuse:
  • landdriverlanddriver Member Posts: 607
Best thing is to research invoice price yourself (invoice pricing is available at edmunds.com) so you know what dealer cost is as a point of reference, and then go to the internet and get as many quotes as possible for the type of vehicle you're interested in. Go to the dealer that gave you the lowest quote and insist they honor this quote. Edmunds.com also has some useful articles on this topic.

Based on what I've been reading on these boards roughly speaking an excellent price for the vehicle you described would be around $29K, a fair price would be $31.5K, and a terrible price would be $34K. Add $1K to these prices if the vehicle is AWD. (These include all fees except tax title and license.)

    Good luck!! :)

(If there's only one dealer in your area then always bargain up from invoice, never down from MSRP. Remain tightly focused on invoice and resist the temptation to even acknowledge MSRP exists:

Them: "I can give this to you for $2000 off MSRP!"
You: "I want it for invoice,"
    Them: "You must be kidding."
You: "Nope, I never kid when it comes to invoice."
Them: "Well, there's no way we can do that -- there's overhead, advertising, TDA, etc."
You: "Well, exactly how much over invoice will I have to pay?"

You're ace in the hole is to never fall in love with a car and always be willing to walk away from the deal!!)

Has anyone bought 2006 HL base model, 6 cyl AWD yet? I don't see it coming into local dealer's (IN) inventory yet. :confuse:
  • sandydee1sandydee1 Member Posts: 26
This morning we drove a 2006 6 cyl HL 4x4 LTD Msrp $35,221, AAA price $31,689. It is the only 4x4 available in all of Dallas. The dealer offered to get us the 2006 6 cyl HL 4x4 base from Amarillo Msrp $30,887, AAA price $27872. The LTD was gorgeous. However, we need a bigger 3rd row as we have 6 adults in the extended family. Also Dallas is 100 degrees everyday in the summer so we need 2nd row A/C. We will probably end up with the Honda Pilot. We currently have all Toyotas-2 Avalons and 1 Camry. Toyotas are great cars!

I have the following deal on the table. Please respond and let me know your thoughts:

2006, 2x4 Limited, V6, with GY, HD, LA, LL, TO, VV, CO, P4, and DH.

    Price offered is $32,430.

Thanks in advance for your input.
  • landdriverlanddriver Member Posts: 607
It's an ok price; a killer deal IMO would be 2K less (this assumes no navigation or entertainment system (can't remember the codes for those); good luck in your negotiating! :)
  • crontabcrontab Member Posts: 12
I agree. The carsdirect.com price is about 1-1.5k lower than what that dealer offered. If you can find 2005 LTD model now, dealers are giving crazy incentives on those, a few K under invoice.

    Good luck.
  • floatingcloudfloatingcloud Member Posts: 27
A few K under invoice? Before or after the rebate? Could you tell us what region is it so that we can use this example during our negotiation?

    Thanks.
  • crontabcrontab Member Posts: 12
    Before.

Use carsdirect.com. The cars direct price is already 1k+ under invoice. Take them out of the equation and aim for another 1k off. I'm in the northeast region. I already bought my HL last month and just called around to see what's left. Mostly Gold ones are left in the config I wanted.

Now is a great time to get one if you are very open to options.

If you can't find a dealer that beats the carsdirect price, use them. It's free to you.
  • gklatvgklatv Member Posts: 35
That seems to be a decent price. But why to worry about this now, AFTER you ALREADY BOUGHT the vehicle?
    Just relax and enjoy.
  • dreasdaddreasdad Member Posts: 276
carsdirect.com does not do business in every state. In some states they are just a referral service just like edmunds or autobytel. In the states that they do sell direct you have to finance and agree to their privacy terms, which in essence is no privacy as they do sell your credit history to others so that you will be deluged with credit card offers and phone calls. being on the "do not call list" will not help either because you have given them permission to call by buying from carsdirect. read their privacy statement.

At this time of year, is it realistic to find an 05 HL base model ? I am looking for and 05 or 06 base model (4 cyl) but with leather. Does the leather package goes on the base HL ?
  • crontabcrontab Member Posts: 12
It will be tough though. I don't think there are any '06 i4 base models anymore. I had a few NJ dealers tell me that they can install leather seats in to HL's that are originally cloth.
  • floatingcloudfloatingcloud Member Posts: 27
06 HL, V6, AWD, 3rd row. With some basic options. Dealer quoted $200 over invoice. How is this quote?

    Thanks.
  • comancoman Member Posts: 11
The wife and I are going to buy either a Highlander (first choice but only slightly) or a Honda Pilot. In checking the dealers in our area (Denver), we were surprised to find that there are many Pilots available in stock but very few HLs. Some Honda dealers had 60+ 2006 Pilots while no dealer had over 6 2006 HLs to choose from and most of those were loaded models with NAV which are out of our price range.
In contrast, they seem to have hundreds of 4Runners.

Do HLs really sell that fast or have they just not restocked from the model year change over? There's not much leverage to drive a bargain when they have so few in stock!

By the way, I've been reading these postings for several months. Lots of great info and buying tips! Feel like I'm well prepared to buy. No one should buy before spending some time here! Thanks.
  • zakimanzakiman Member Posts: 71
    > I don't think there are any '06 i4 base models anymore

Do you mean they no longer make them in 4 cyls ? Would it be harder do get a deal on a stripped down HL 06 at this time . I am ready to buy but in no rush so I want to time it correctly.
  • landdriverlanddriver Member Posts: 607
Sounds like you got a competitive quote; $200 over invoice is a killer deal assuming you verify invoice pricing on the web and there are no rebates (double check to see if there are any new rebates for October for your area if you haven't done so already)!

    :)
  • floatingcloudfloatingcloud Member Posts: 27
Hi guys, based you past experience, do you have any hunch on what the incentive will be for the next month? For a 06 HL, will the incentive disappear, go less, or go more? I cannot find the exact color/option combination now, but there might be one coming next month.

    Thanks!
  • dreasdaddreasdad Member Posts: 276
It really depends on inventory nationwide and in your area. I was really Surprised that we had a rebate this month on Highlanders as the only ones we had not presold laster only days on the lot. I would not count on a rebate next month in the texas area as we have no HL here
  • onthegosteronthegoster Member Posts: 3
We are looking for Highlanders v6 w/3 row seat w/side, curtain airbags. The few dealers in Georgia told me that Southeast region do not have v6 w/3 row seat that have side/curtain airbags. Should I go to the NorthEast region to find one?
  • joszjosz Member Posts: 7
I am almost in the same boat as you are. I just want the side curtain airbags, but I must pay much much more for a lot of juck options. It seems Toyota does not care about its customer's safety at all. TOO BAD.
  • billjohanbilljohan Member Posts: 3
Was able to get a HL 4 cyl w/ the rear/side bag option. At first we wanted those two things WITH the 3rd row seat model. Looked like a special order only. So we compromised and started searching for one w/o. Wasn't in the color we liked, but we were tired of hunting and didn't want to wait so long. Dealer manager said after the fact that this was an order by a company but they backed out.

I think many people want something like a DVD rather than as many airbags as possible. We don't.
  • billjohanbilljohan Member Posts: 3
Also drove the HL Hybrid. Man, what acceleration. I was shocked.
  • onthegosteronthegoster Member Posts: 3
The one that we can find is leather, limited v.6 w/3rd row seat and side & curtain airbags. I got an internet quote today for $30,000 plus all the fees and tax.

I'm in Northern California. I'm new to all this so I need your help ;o)
I just received the following internet quote. Is it a good price? Thank you in advance!

Factory Installed Accessories: FE GY HD LA LL TO VV
    Port Installed Accessories ..: CF

    http://conicellitoyotaofconshohocken.com/images/Sites/Site0/Document/CON_Toyota_DT_11-06-0- 5_IN.pdf
I got a proportional discount on the 2005 non limited version. The price I paid was lower then the carsdirect.com price.
  • landdriverlanddriver Member Posts: 607
It's definitely a decent price; you aren't being taken to the cleaners or anything; also check edmunds.com's TMV for the HL; still never hurts to make a counter offer of $1500 less (or close to invoice) just to see what happens -- good luck!! :)
  • kurtnewkurtnew Member Posts: 8
I am being offered $100 below invoice (after all rebates) + taxes for a 2006 Highlander. Seems like a good deal to me, what do you think? Also, what kind of "hidden" fees should I be careful of?

Finally, I would like to get a Navigation system but don't want to get the Limited. Are there custom navigation systems I can fit in the Highlander? (don't want a portable one if I can avoid it). Thanks much.
  • driverxxdriverxx Member Posts: 3
I was just wondering how this price sounds? I already purchased the vehicle (which I love!).

New 06 Highlander 2WD V6 with all the airbags in back/front; power seats; 3rd row seat; moonroof, cover and wind deflector; extra floor mats; spoiler; tow package; tinted wheels; paint detail for $28750 out the door, including tax, etc. I live in AZ and they added on quite a few fees on top of the high sales tax. I also had to trade in my old 93 subaru (which was a great car!), but was pretty beat up and not worth much I think. I got the Highlander in black. :) Does this deal sound okay? I bought it myself and am not sure if I did okay on the bargaining. I had only stopped in to look, but ended up with the car! Also considered the murano and forester.

The 2006 is the last model of the current styling. Edmunds has an article re: the 2007 Highlander. I think the current model is "ok" looking. The new model will be a dramatic(nice!) change. See this ""http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/FVDP/Photos/styleId=100531781#:

It should be noted the new HL will be "influenced" by this design which is Toyota's FT-SX concept vehicle; to what degree it resembles it remains to be seen...

Was checking the message board and saw yours.

I live in the Danbury area and just starting looking for an AWD, fold down third seat, V6.

Was wondering where the best deal is. Have feelers out to GreenTree Toyota, Mt. Kisco and Wappingers Falls.

Suggestions would be appreciated. Txs.. Redman3

I test drove an 06 HL Limited this weekend. I was impressed with the tight handling for an SUV and the ride was quiet and smooth. The seating was very comfortable but I don't think more than 2 people could sit comfortably in the rear seat. And of course the third row seats are a joke but not a problem for me since I'd never use them anyway.

There were a couple of things that concerned me. One is the design of the center console. It seems like a very poor design that leaves very little space for storage. There was no easily accessed tray or cubby to put your cell phone and other stuff. The cubby under the console looked like an after thought and not very convenient. I was also surprised at the amount of prime space used by ash trays. I'm not a smoker so they seemed to take up a lot of valuable space. I'm wondering how those who own HLs work around the lack of console storage? I'd much rather there be a high console with an arm rest instead of the flip down arms which seemed to be in the way all the time.

I was also concerned about the lack of AC vents in the rear seats. This seems like a major oversight. The sales person was clueless. Is it true that there is heat for the 2nd and 3rd row but no AC?

I also noticed that the rear tailgate opening was very rounded on the bottom corners and looked like it might make loading wide items difficult. Has anyone experienced any problems like that?

Overall, I liked the HL very much. It seems to be an excellent compromise between a typical big SUV and a car, but I have a few reservations. I may be a little picky but I expect to drive the next vehicle I buy for 10+ years so I want to make sure I can live with what ever short comings it has. None are perfect.

    Thanks.
  • cino72cino72 Member Posts: 10
We just got a great deal on an 06 HL and i agree with you on the cubby below seems useless to me, but the compartment behind the cup holder is pretty big and i use the ash tray to hold my cell phone lol.

the HL does have heat in the back but not ac no idea why but the kids seem to like it better then the rear ac in my dodge (only cause its winter time here)

the 3rd row seats work great for small kids but no way for adults

as for the rear hatch and loading i have not tried any thing but a small box so no comment there.

Over all we are very pleased with our purchase.
  • landdriverlanddriver Member Posts: 607
One salesman told me the cubbyhole below the center console is for a woman's purse; you'll have to judge whether the console storage room is enough for you; is fine for me, but I don't have that much stuff; the glove box is fair-sized, and also there are cubby holes under the cargo area deck on either side (at least on the '01 - '03 models, not sure about the '04 and later models). Also there's a small storage compartment in the dash to the left of the steering wheel that can fit maybe a small cell phone, a small storage compartment in the overhead console for eye glasses, and compartments in the front doors for maps or magazines.

There are AC ducts under the front seats supplying AC to the second row seats; I'm pretty sure the second row seats get both heat and AC; don't know about the third row seats as I don't have them on my HL.

The only wide item I've ever loaded in the cargo area was a 4x8' sheet of plywood, and it was extremely awkward and would never do it again as the HL is definitely not suited for hauling this size material. Otherwise it's great -- I've packed it full of moving boxes, even a 6' step ladder and 8' 2x4s (after reclining the front passenger seat); it's amazing how much stuff you can fit in there. But when recently picking up a new oven I took my pickup as I wasn't sure whether it would fit in the HL. You should also be aware that the rear window does not open on the HL as some people like leaving long stuff sticking out the rear windows when hauling in their SUVs. It really depends on what kind of stuff you're planning on carrying.

Overall the HL's a great vehicle as you already noted and I suspect you'll be very happy with it. It's quiet, very smooth, and has good power (even the 4cyl models); it's a car people fall in love with!
