Those cars with the 50-70 miles on them will have had at least one test drive. In my experience, that's not uncommon at all. Vehicles with a few test drives will quickly get miles on them, and those will be the units that the dealer is most likely to go lowest on the price. When I was shopping for my civic, I took one out on a 60 mile test drive myself (and I always test drive by myself - I won't do business with a dealership that insists on sending a salesperson out with me).

I bought my 2007 EX/AT sedan back in March, and paid $225 over invoice then - that was the best deal I could get without having to travel at least 100 miles to an alternate dealer (and the price included moon-roof visor, splash guards, door edge guards, trunk tray and wheel locks). But, I picked the individual unit I wanted, which had 11 miles on it (mostly because the dealer stored excess inventory at another lot a few miles away from the dealership). This was also back when Honda was offering low APR financing, and sales were very strong, at least in my area (north central Virginia).

I think you are doing good. You might be able to negotiate a little lower, but I dont know how much lower they'd be willing to go as you are already below MSRP. I bought a '07 LX coupe with manual transmission in Maryland for about $1000 less. Generally, thats how much you'll save if you go with a manual transmission, so your deal is at least as good as mine. I've never heard of anyone waiving the $595 transportation fee. That's considered by most people to be a legitimate fee.

As for the color you want, maybe they can get one from another dealership? It doesn't hurt to ask. Or, a better idea would be for you to reserve a car for a few days and then call other dealerships with the price quote they gave you. Other dealerships should at least match it, and maybe they'll have the color you want. Also, why not ask them if they can do better while you're at it?

You're getting a good price regardless. The lack of selection is what you get for buying a Civic during the Honda clearance.

    Thanks for any help.

Hendrick Honda is giving me the following.
    base: 20,682
    fr: 595
    tax: 676
    process: 399
    tags: 49

    total: 22,401

seems like a decent deal, going to dealership tomarrow. the other dealers in N.VA did not come close, Koons was second but $450 more.

All, I finally decided to buy the car ... so I did. I just wanted to share the system that I used to get a reasonably good buy:

1 - MAKE SURE that you know exactly what you want. Go look at the car and take it for a test drive. Go home. If you are sure you want theis car then go to step 2.

2 - Go to the Honda website and conduct a dealer locator based upon your ZIP code. Print out the list of dealers within ... say 100 miles from your house. This will be your most important document (before you sign a contract).

3 - Go to each dealer website and request a quote, preferably about a week before you plan to buy (and preferably the LAST week of the month.

4 - Grab a folder and staple the dealer printout list to the front. As your quotes come in print them out and put them in the folder. Write the quoted price on the list next to the dealer name.

5 - Wait a day or so and then start contacting the Internet Sales Manager at each dealer that has not yet provided you with a quote. Make sure that they know that you are VERY CLOSE to making your buying decision. This is a true statement since you are waiting for their quote.

6 - I found that as you talk to each manager (on the phone) and get closer to getting your last quote the managers will ask not only when but how much your best quote is. Remember to have a realistic "target" price in your head, based upon the information you have available on the NET. All you need is to have ONE (1) dealer come in with a low bid (I had two) and the finish line is near. When the Internet sales managers start asking about your low bid you have the number that you need. I received a VERY good quote from a dealer about an hour away ... when I called my local manager to ask "Where's your quote?" he sent me one almost $1,000 more. He hen calle dme back and asked if it was acceptable ... I told him that I had a MUCH lower bid (and I read it to him over the phone). He then emailed a second quote beating that and all was done.

Just to let you know (because you're probably going to ask ... I paid $15,675 plus tax, tag and fees. The total came out on the low end of my target range ($17,500 to $18,000).

The dealers are VERY hungry it seems right now.

    Good luck ...

That is very, very low. Invoice is 17,955 plus $595=$18,550. At $850 below invoice, that's awfully sweet.

Hi I'm a recent college grad and I need to purchase a car to commute to grad school next year. I was wondering if anybody would have any advice or tips for purchasing a new Civic LX in the Rochester, NY area.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I need tips to negotiate as low a price as possible to have money for college hah.

Also, does Honda do any recent college grad deals like Toyota or Hyundai?

The Mohawk Honda (Schenectady, NY) salesman I purchased my 2006 Civic Hybrid from returned my call asking about deals on a 2007 Civic LX MT. He told me the invoice price for the only one on their lot was $16026.26. He mentioned there aren't many of them (MT) around and that Civics were moving pretty well. I did not advance the conversation toward a deal because my father-in-law, for whom I was trying to arrange a deal, had already settled on a Toyota Corolla.
  • duddud Member Posts: 91
Your price looks pretty good BUT I think you might be able to do better. From your breakout you have no "dealer fee" which can add hundreds to the final price. I think I paid close to $500 less on the price (including dest). Get a number of quotes and take the one you feel most comfortable with.

Just bought my Civic for $17,710 OTD from Northwest Honda in Baltimore.
    Working backwards, I paid about 16,085 + 595 transport + 195 MD tag/title fees + 835 tax(5%)= 17,710. And I got the color I wanted!
Thanks for your help, those of you who responded to my post.

Anyone who bought the car recently can suggest a good price (OTD) for a Civic LX sedan AT in San Diego area or nearby SoCal area? And can you also share the name of dealer?

    Thanks a lot.
  • duddud Member Posts: 91
That is a very good price seeing as AT is +$700 or so dollars more than an AT. The reason (other than your shrewd negotiating skills) that you got such a good price is that you were not charged the ripoff "dealer" fee, sometimes as high as $600!

    I finally got my car.

The Dealership is Sierra Honda in Monrovia, but this dealership have very poor customer service.

I was treated with cold faces from almost everybody in this dealership.

I would recommend to get the car from somewhere else if possible.

Here was my experience of getting the Honda Civic.

First, the brand new car they gave to me have a big scratch under the driver side door. When I informed them of scratch, they told me to bring the car back to the dealership for repair. WE ARE TALKING ABOUT A BRAND NEW CAR HERE. I finally demanded them to give me after brand new car.

Second, two of the financial people that I dealt with had stone faces. One of them never properly packed my document and kind of threw the documents in front of me and was rude.

Third, they didn't put the wheel lock key inside the car. I ended up have to drive back the next day for the wheel lock key. Granted, they did gave me the wheel locks for free, but that does not justify the poor service.

Forth, the internet sales people was not very pleasant at all. My impression was that they would be nice to you if they can make tons of money of you from the car.

Overall, I didn't have a good experience with my car purchase. They said they gave me a very good deal and lost money on the deal. But, that does not justify the horrible customer service that I received from this dealership.

I will not shop from Sierra Honda in Monrovia again.

Thanks for your information. What's the OTD price you paid for your Honda Civic LX? Can you please provide breakdowns of the price. Thank you.
  • duddud Member Posts: 91
    anodize,

You must have gotten a killer deal to put up with that. My sales experience was just the opposite. I bought my LX under invoice but I had to accept tthe fact that they still were making money on the deal. My only complaint (and it's a minor one) is that they were supposed to fill the tank with gas. About half way home I realized that it was only 3/4 full.

    Such a small problem ...

It seems the prices around the country range from $17,700-$18,100 as the best out the door prices. When I received internet prices from all four Honda dealers in this area-the best out the door prices ranged from $18,922-$19,664 and they were not willing to negotiate. I have check in hand and willing to pay cash, but no one wanted my business in the $17.7k range. They stated that no one was selling at that price. Anyone in Phoenix recently purchase an 07 automatic LX four door sedan?? If so...what did you pay?
  • patmfitzpatmfitz Member Posts: 2
Honda Civic LX 4dr Sedan AT / Blue
    $17,400 (including destination and doc)

I talked my way into a decent value for my crappy trade-in, paid total $16500, which pretty much matched the values specified on Edmunds.com.
  • doodlebuggydoodlebuggy Member Posts: 2
I am being quoted 17100, including destination charges. tax/license is additional. Does this seem ok, or should I keep trying. Looking in Northern Calif.
  • patmfitzpatmfitz Member Posts: 2
doodlebuggy: what model are you looking at: 2dr or 4dr, Manual or Automatic?
  • duddud Member Posts: 91
    indira,

I hate to tell you this but that should be considered a good price on that car, with AT. I paid about $500 less for a MT. The difference in invoice between MT and AT is about $700 which means if you went with a MT your price would be about $17,000 OTD ... which is a very good price.

Consider the deal or request quotes from dealers farther from home.

A warning for everyone looking for a deal on a Civic: *** Tomorrow is the last day of the month. The 2008 models will be hitting the dealerships soon and the "good" deals on Civics will dry up fast as we head past August. If yo find a good deal grab it or you might end up paying near-MSRP on a 2008 Civic. ***
  • ewnatsewnats Member Posts: 7
    dud,

are dealers less likely to give better deals in august? one dealer i spoke to say that the new civics are coming september-ish and they still get new shipments in up to end of august.

the best price i could get for a '07 civic LX auto, 4 dr was

    $17,300 ( inc. destination )
    $ 1384 ( 8% NY tax )
    $ ~270 ( doc )

is this a good deal for the civic?
  • duddud Member Posts: 91
    ewnats,

Honestly that is not a good deal at all. Invoice on that car is about $16,900 including invoice. That means that you are paying $400 over. You are lucky that you don't have to pay the rip-off "dealer fees" that we do in Florida. That could ad as much as $600 to the price.

You price (based upon what you provided) would end up being almost $19,000, an incredibly high price for an LX. Suggest you get quotes farther from your location and yes, if you can't buy today then give it 4 weeks and target your last chance for a good deal in late August. Have all your info in a file and start requesting quotes about the 24th of the month. Wait a few days and call all the dealers who did not give you a quote. Explain that you are DEFINITELY buying by the end of the month and you want a quote. All you need is one low quote and you are set.

BTW, I would set a target price on that car in the $18,000 area (IMHO).

Actually, the late-Summer and Fall can be fantastic times to make a deal on a 2007, if you can still find one (and are not fussy about a specific colour, and willing to accept likely some test drive miles on the car). I've often bought my new cars in the fall, buying new but previous model-year units, and gotten some of the best deals I've ever had (a couple of times, literally thousands below invoice on perfectly fine, and new, cars, just a year behind in model year).

In fact, in March when I bought my 2007 EX/AT sedan, I could have saved a lot more and gotten a new 2006, as the dealer still had two left and was really eager to be rid of them. But, neither was in a colour I liked, and each had 400-600 miles on it, and I had no issues with the price I finally negotiated on my 2007 (in the colour I did want, and with just 11 miles on it).

It's just something to think about if you are really on a tight budget, but can wait a bit for the 2008 inventory to start crowding up dealer's storage along-side older 2007 units. The same goes for the accord, as the new (and newly re-designed 2008 model) start arriving - there are likely to be great deals on 2007 accord's as dealers try to clear older inventory.
  • duddud Member Posts: 91
I'm only going by what I was told ... if you even half believe what the dealer is telling you. I was told that the '08s will be out soon and some dealerships have stopped getting '07s. In my case I was looking for a hard-to-find car, a MT LX sedan. Most dealerships have 1 or two of these and not in any color you would want. i just happened to find a dealership who would match my lowest quote, was pretty close to my house and actually had a half-dozen (in three color choices) in stock.

I encourage anyone considering buying to use the convergance of a number of factors to theit benefit: buy at the end of the month, buy near the end of the model year and use the Internet to get your best quote. Visit the dealer only to test drive and choose the color you want. Then you go back to pick up the car once you've worked a deal from the comfort of you home.

BTW, the dealer I bought from is pretty huge and they are always selling cars. the problem they have is that corporate sets lofty sales goals that are VERY hard to meet. My dealership had not met their sales goals inmonths. If they do not meet their goals ... they get no holdback AND factory-to-dealer incentives (ouch). This is why it is advantageous to buy at the end of the month (when they are trying to meet their sales goals).

I have been quoted $18,449 + TTL for the EX. With this being $100 under invoice do you think anyone else will go lower than that? I have had some dealers say that they are not going under invoice but two others have been lower than that. I am in the chicago area.
  • toyocam1toyocam1 Member Posts: 6
Finally nailed the deal :) .Had been going back and forth for a while with the negotiation.
    Here is the split:
    OTD-->$18300/- (incl. tax,plates etc etc)
FYI: - Michigan tax is 6%

I am reading some people getting it for $17700/-Woww..here in Michigan, had been to about 5 dealerships...none of them budged below $18400.Got a feeling that it is a sellers market for sure.

Need your feedback,guys---is this a good deal or have i paid through my nose here?

Anyone near Pontiac/Southfield/Troy and around areas in Michigan--this is the lowest i could get.Lemme know if you need any pointers from me.

    Thanks all for your help!

    toyo,

Your price is right in-line with what I paid in Florida (6% tax) for the same car with MT. I paid about $900 less (for the MT) and the invoice price of the AT is $700 more than the MT.

    dud,
We hit all the local Honda dealerships (3) in Rochester, NY and all are pretty low on inventory. One dealership only had one left actually and the others won't budge under 17,300 and 17,500 respectively. The dealership who offered 17,300 wants us to take purchase by today (7/31) but the price is very pricey for my budget since I'm just starting grad school. Should I wait for a couple of weeks till mid August? I technically don't need it till end of August.

    Thanks!

    ewnats

    doodlebuggy,

Lay out the entire dal for us including what your tax, tag, title and any additional fees would be and we'll see what we can do for you.
  • duddud Member Posts: 91
    ewnats,

What a coincidence, my second home is in Rochester (Greece). I LOVE the place. I wish I was up there now ... I could help you out.

The reason the dealer wants you to take possesion (by the end of today) is because he has a quota to meet for the sales period ending today. If you tried for the same deal tomorrow I doubt that you would be able to swing it because he would be less motivated to do so.

As I said before I personally believe that the $17,300 deal that you were given is high, very high. If I were trying to buy that car here i Florida I could probably get it for between $18,000 and $18,300 OTD. When you deal with the dealer ALWAYS negotiate an Out The Door price.

As for what you should do ... I suggest that you have answered your own question. You said "... but the price is a bit pricey for my budget since I'm just starting grad school." If the price is too high then wait ... or buy something else. before I bought the Civic I analyzed 4 other vehicles ranging from $13,750 to $17,000 OTD. Eache of these gives the Civic a run for it's money. Consider another model.

"Should I wait for a couple of weeks till mid August? I technically don't need it till end of August." In my opinion the "window" for a good deal (for July) closes tonight. The window, again IMHO, opens again in about 3 weeks. This may be your last, best opportunity to get a good deal on an '07 before the '08s come out en mass. I would wait ...but I would also look toward Buffalo and other towns to find more dealers.

If you need to talk more you can email me at smith6345@hotmail.com.

    Sacura,

I got my HondaCivicLX Auto on Columbus Immke Honda last weekend.
    18388 OTD price.
    16951 + 250 (document) + 6.75% + 25.5 (title)
It's the best that I can get.
  • ewnatsewnats Member Posts: 7
Haha small world dud, thats a nice place. I called today with an offer of $18,500 OTD and the dealer told me he would call me back but still hasn't called 2 hours later. I figure that is a lost deal. I guess I gotta wait for the August season for a good deal. Out of curiosity, what were the other 4 cars you looked at before setting on the Civic?
  • duddud Member Posts: 91
The other four (4) cars were the Elantra (about $14,000 OTD), the Sonata GLS (about $15,000 OTD), the Sentra (about $16,500 OTD) and the Mazda 3i Sport (about $14,000) OTD.

Of the above cars the Mazda 3 is the best value IMHO, even more so than the Civic. My wife and I went to a local Mazda dealer and they were running a clearance sale on the car for, get this $11,995! With tax, tag, etc. the OTD price was only $13,750! If it not for my wife's insistence I would have bought the Mazda 3 and saved myself a whopping $3,500!
  • ewnatsewnats Member Posts: 7
Wow! That's pretty good. Was this dealership in Florida or Rochester? The Civics selling in my are are probably gonna be out of my price range (OTD < $18,500).
  • duddud Member Posts: 91
The prices were in Florida. If you cannot afford the Civic go look at the Mazda 3. While not as "nice" as the Civic it does have a larger engine and can be had for considerably less.

    Good luck ...
