    Here is the deal I got;
2003 Limited, 4WD, FE (EMISSIONS), EJ (IN DASH CD CHANGER), GY (AIRBAGS), RF (REAR SPOILER), SR (MOONROOF), CF (MATS), SE (IMPROVED DASH)

    Metallic Sky Silver, $38,551

I can't believe it. It was an AD CAR advertised at 8K off MSRP and I got it!

I traded a 2000 4Runner Limited for A 2003 sr5 Sequoia, and according to NADA the trade in on the 4runner was $22,000. The Sequoia sticker was $39,751. They gave me $21,000 for the 4Runner, and a $5001.00 discount off the invoice. Dealer Cost was $35,751. So if I use the Nada value for the trade ($22,000), I got the Sequoia for $35,751? I also got $1250 rebate, so is this a decent deal off sticker? I also negotiated $300 in accessories (mats, deflectors etc.)

I agree with Steve that everyone is saying $500.00 over invoive and the prices range in thousands of dollars in price difference.

    EJ JBL,6 Disc
    GY airbags
    RF rear spoiler
    RL Daytime lights
    EY Rear Seat DVD
    SR Moonroof

    40,000 + tax, i tranfered plates for $10.00+
1000.00 cash back. Sooooo,,, $39,000 for a Limited 4X4 + tax is a great deal for this truck.
I'm hoping to get 8-10 yrs out of this truck.

    Again... DO YOUR HOMEWORK !!!!!!

Do your homework guys. These trucks are NO LONGER in demand. The deals are getting GREAT.

I'm looking at a '04 Silver Metallic Seqouia. When I load up the SR5 with all the options that are standard on the Limited, it appears to be $3,000 less (minus a few vanity items) See below.

SR5 Base (from Toyota Website) 32,200
    CQ Convenience Package 255
AG Alloy Wheel Package #2 1,835
    PM Preferred Package 2,515
    KY Keyless Entry 245
    AC Dual Air Conditioning 570
    DR Roof Rack 220
LF Front Fog & Driving Lamp 110
DJ JBL 3-In-1 Premium Audio 515
                                             -------
        Total 38,465

    Limited (Base) 41,474

Ok, the Vanity mirror light, the metal trim interior, the auto retract lights are all I can think of that seperate SR5 with the above options and the Limited (base). I'm condisering the Silver Metallic, so the two-tone problem is solved.

My real question. What does one get for the extra $3,009.

    Thanks,

    CP

Don't forget the sunroof which is standard on a limited is $1000 option on SR5. Therefore, the difference is around $2,000 (instead of $3,000) between the two.

I think PM (leather package) is not very easy to find. You may have to pay a little premium for it. Not sure.... Good luck.
  • yickwoyickwo Member Posts: 54
Forgot to mention the tow pkg and auto-dimming mirrors for another $505. So the difference is down to about $1,500.
  • cmp1960cmp1960 Member Posts: 5
Thanks Yickyo.... I'm really trying to justify getting the Limited. I like the Phantom Gray Pearl all in one color.

However, based on the brochure and the Toyota website "build your own":

    1) The sunroof is NOT standard on the '04 Sequoia Limited.

    2) The tow package IS included in the "Alloy Wheel Package #2" cited in my options... (brochure and website)

    3) I did miss the "Auto Dimming Mirrors" at $125 difference.

So the real difference is (to this point)

    Vanity mirror light
    Metal tone interior
    Auto retract mirrors
    Auto Dimming mirrors

Guest-ti-mate all above to be $350-$600

    So around $2,500 difference (+/- 10%)

The whole point in producing a "loaded" vehicle is to give the buyer the opportunity to get ALL the good stuff in one package and pay a little bit less (incrementally) than if things were all "options".

So..in the end (outside the Metallic Silver), one is spending an additional $2,500 on Limited just to avoid a two-tone vehicle.

I really like the Phantom Gray Pearl and hate that I can't get it in SR5 without the two-tone thing.

I agree, the PM package will be hard to find..., but, I think the only thing it provides over the other leather upgrades is the heated seats and wheel audio controls..

    Thanks again Yickyo.

No problem cmp1960. I agree that the limited may not be great value if you can get a fully loaded SR5.

I think toyota website and info is not accurate. Moonroof is standard on '04 limited and the rear AC is now standard on '04 SR5. I have verified them at the dealerships and looked at the window stickers. so that would change your equation some what. You are also correct about the tow pkg.

Don't know where you are at, but in my area, '03 limited 4x4 are being advertised to be $8,000 to $9,500 off MSRP. I am seriously thinking about picking one up at that kind of price.

Ill leave the pleasant buying experience post for later... in a nutshell: We purchase a 04 SR5 Sequia Silver Sky Metallic yesterday with the following options (100 bucks over invoice - 33):
    SR5 Silver Sky Metallic
    FE 50 State Emissions
    DR Roof Rack
GY Driver & Passenger Curtain & Side Air bag
    SR Moon roof
    CQ Convenience Package
    KE Key less Entry
    LF Fog Lights
EJ JBL 10 speaker/6 CD changer
    AG Alloy Wheel Package #2
    CF Floor Mats

First thing I did when I got home was to sit down with brochure and see what I didn't get that I would have gotten on Limited.(For about 7 grand more given I couldn't get close to invoice on Limiteds)

    On Limited not on mine:
    1. Leather (My opinion the only big difference)
    2. Head lamps are BOTH auto on/off (SR5 only auto off)
    3. Auto-retract on outside mirrors
    4. Heated seats (Im in Southern CA not an issue)
    5. Audio Controls on steering wheel (nice but not critical)
    6. Dual AC (another nice but not critical)
    7. Auto-Dimming Rear view mirror (not an issue in a high ridding SUV besides rear glass is tinted)
    8. Sun visors have "secondary visor"
    9. Single tone paint (Not an issue with the color I selected)
    10. Metallic look interior molding (SR5 is plastic)

I believe ALL but the single tone, secondary visor, retractable side mirrors, metallic interior molding are available options in the SR5 - Personally I don't think the extra gadgets are worth the premium in price - specially given the dealers are less willing to give you rock bottom prices on Limited..... in reply to CP: I cant see the few options missing being worth 3 grand.... I kept asking myself the same question: What am I missing.....I think its the little tag on side of car that says Limited :-)

Bought a SR5 04 yesterday (see previous post) and I stand corrected I actually paid 400 over invoice (I totaly missed a bogus 300 advertisement fee.. all things considered though it is still 1% above invoice and well below TMV) I was surprised they gave me that price on 04. We actually arrived at dealer expecting to purchase a 03 we had already negotiated through the dealers internet/fleet department but my wife wasnt convinced on color and asked how much 04s would be with same options - turns out 04 invoice is cheaper then 03 since it looks like they made captain chairs std. equipment on 04 or part of one of the options we already had. Goes to prove they are no longer in demand as they used to be (Friend bought it the first year out and paid 4000 OVER MSRP... hes got money to burn though ;-) )

Point I wanted to make was that this was my second experience buying through online/fleet department and the experience is night and day compared to the haggling and unpleasantness of dealing with dealers when you just walk in. All they need to improve now is on the finance dept. - They still try to play the same games as when you walk in... selling you excess warranty/gap/corrosion for sky high prices.... The only reason why we spent a lot of time at dealer was that we switched from the 03 to the 04 so given the deals (even without the 1000 rebate) were almost the same ended up walking through their entire inventory picking a color.

For any of you doing the online/fleet mgr thing some suggestions:
    1) Give yourself a week or two to get replies from everyone or else call the local dealers directly and ask for fleet department

    2) Fleet managers normally will not haggle on price unless you can show them another fleet manager has quoted you a better price at which time they will tend to match it (The whole idea of online/fleet is to cut to the chase... if they haggle find another fleet manager/dealer)

    3) Before you go and take delivery of your car tell fleet manager to have all paperwork ready - including financing if doing it through dealer (they can do all this before you get there as long as they have your financial info) - make sure they have car detailed and ready to go

My BMW was purchased through fleet and I was at dealer for no more then 30 minutes and 20 of them were inspecting/test drive/learning car features - 10 minutes is all it took to sign everything - everything had been negotiated beforehand... no high pressure/tired of being there/make 10000 decisions now...

The SR5 didnt go as smoothly mainly due to us swapping to an 04 at the last minute - Main reason to get dealer to have everything ready:
    1) Aside from you spending less time at dealer it also means they will have less time to convince you to buy things you dont need
    2) Finance dept. will not have the time to do their high pressure sales bull...and even if they do you will be fresh given you just arrived and not worn out after 3 hrs picking a car.(How do you think I missed the 300 advertisement fee... I was tired...Im sure they would have removed it had I asked them to)
  • tidestertidester Member Posts: 10,059
Im sure they would have removed it had I asked them to

Don't be so sure about that! Advertising fees are fairly common and seldom waived. I haven't met anyone who likes them, however.

correct me if I'm wrong on this.. but I believe Toyota adds an advertising fee onto the MSRP sticker of the Sequoia.. if the dealer charged you an additional ad fee.. no good.. they double-dipped..
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
I think it's on the sticker too.

That may well be true. The last Toyota I bought was 16 years ago.

I have been asked to figure a fair price to pay for a '04 SR5 for a family member and have not been able to find out the holdback on Toyota. Can anyone furnish this information, since I am not to familiar dealing with Toyota, I would like to figure a price that we feel would be justified to seek in dealing.

Just got home from the dealer, he started out at 44,575 and said he couldn't budge. I told him that was way high, but he said that was the best he could do. When I told him thanks for his time he asked how serious I was to buy on a scale of 1 to 10. I told him twenty. He then asked me what I expected to pay for this vehicle. By the way, I was looking at 2004 Limited 4X4 with GY,HY,EJ,RF,RL. I then told him 500 over invoice and he said he couldn't touch that. I again told him thanks for his time and got up to leave, he stopped me and said he could do 1000 over invoice, but I would have to pay for a locating fee of $2.50 per mile. I then told him thanks anyway and left. His invoice price on this vehicle was 41,188. Does this sound right? Was I stupid for leaving? Should I call and tell him I'll take it? Thanks for any info.

Anyone getting below invoice on 2003 SR5 models still sitting on lots? I have a few dealers in the area that have one or two sitting around, and I see Toyota is offering $1-1500 cash rebates....
  • robertbickrobertbick Member Posts: 28
For an `03, you should be paying thousands below invoice. People are getting `04s for just a few hundred above invoice.
  • ar15ar15 Member Posts: 58
I ordered a 2004 SR5 and the dealer took $500 over invoice. This was several weeks ago and this dealership still had 3 2003's on the lot.

I went through the list of '04 Sequoias that were already schedule for production for the Southeastern dealerships. I wanted black with sunroof, leather, JBL, spoiler, keyless. I found one that was scheduled for manufacture that had everything but the spoiler and keyless, and I had the dealer install those.

The only way I would have purchased a 2003 is if they would have gone thousands below invoice. Why? You get more for the same invoice price on a '04 than a '03 (rear a/c, power seats). A 2003 is like buying a used car when it comes to resale, so I wouldn't even consider one at the prices they were asking.
  • yickwoyickwo Member Posts: 54
I purchased a '03 4x2 limited two weeks back and paid $9,000 off MSRP (which was about $4,200 under invoice). No other added dealer fees or ad fees except for a $45 doc. prep. For more details, you can read my post in the general Sequoia discussion thread about 10-15 posts back. Also, over the weekend, I saw a local dealer ad for $6,000 off MSRP on all '04 Limited in stock.
  • wharris66wharris66 Member Posts: 1
I am currently taking bids (Motley Fool method)on 04 Limited, Phantom Grey/Oak with GY (side airbags), EJ (JBL 6-disc changer), RL (daytime lights), and Rear Spoiler. Best quote is 38,582 + TTL. $339 doc. fee waived. Does this sound reasonable (~$800 over Edmunds invoice) or should I push for $500 over invoice? I live in the Southeast.

Also, one fleet mgr. said that MAF (national ad. fee-$560) & TDA (regional ad. fee-$275) are added to invoice by Toyota and are not negotiable. This sounds like B.S. and I wonder if it amounts to a "floorplan fee" or "wholesale cash reserve" which should be subtracted from the invoice to determine the Dealer's Total Cost. Any suggestions/advice will be appreciated.
  • motu1motu1 Member Posts: 6
What dealer had the $6k off of '04 LTDs? That's like $2k +/- under invoice. I'm ready to sign on the dotted line at that price.
  • yickwoyickwo Member Posts: 54
The ad I saw was from Power Toyota in Irvine. Also, Power Toyota in Cerritos had a '03 silver 4X4 limited for $9,700ish off MSRP. I would wait for all the news paper ads on Thurs./Friday/Sat. and compare all the dealer's ads. Good luck.
  • motu1motu1 Member Posts: 6
Thanks for the valuable info! I'll definitely be checking out Power Toyota(s). It seems that OC has better deals than LA or Ventura County (where I live).
  • yickwoyickwo Member Posts: 54
If you are in the Ventura County area, I also saw an ad two weeks back from Toyota of Thousand Oaks for a '03 black 4X4 limited with $10K off MSRP of $47K. They were very helpful and friendly over the phone. The trick is to gather as many different papers from different greater LA areas. For example, LA Times have different editions for orange county, san fernando valley and san gabriel valley and ventura county. Different editions would have ads from different dealerships. The orange county register is also a good source. Good luck and let us know how you made out!!

The price you mention (~$800 over invoice) is very close to the price I paid in late September for mine. The dealer probably views the price as exactly $500 over invoice as they include the regional advertising fee in their invoice calculations. Given the overall cost and popularity of the vehicle, I probably wouldn't (and didn't) quibble over the $300.

When I decided to purchase mine ('04 Limited with nearly all of the available options) I first attempted to walk into the dealership where my neighbor worked and buy the truck for nearly $1000 over invoice. After a terrible runaround and a bunch of offensive crap, I left the dealership and sent an electronic request for quitation over the internet to a few of the next closest dealerships (in the Chicagoland area) and bought the truck the next day for roughly $800 over the Edmunds published invoice. Again, the dealership quoted $500 over invoice, but there was an additional $350 of so regional advertising fee in the price that wasn't reflected in the Edmunds invoice. I was pleased with the price (given what I had gone through at the previous dealership) so I bought it.

Still haven't received it due to the fact that the combination of options wasn't available. I am expecting it early in December which will be roughly 12 weeks since the initial order.

BTW: We orderd the Phantom Grey, but with the Charcoal interior.
  • wheelingwheeling Member Posts: 1
Helped a friend to buy a 04 SR5 today. Get the price down to $500 over invoice. When the invoice was shown to me, it was about $1,500 higher than we calculated based on Edmunds. In addition to the amounts of base invoice, and all the factory and port options, there are MAF, DTA, 2% dealer hold back, another hold back fee, 1% financial hold back fee. We refused the deal, and the manager insisted that it was normal and they've done this all the time. I didn't believe him. So we went to another dealer, he produced essentially the same invoice with all the fees.

I have bought cars from other manufacturers, all the invoices were normal without all these fees, maybe except for some advertising fees. This is the first time for a Toyota, are these fees legitimate? Do all your invoices include the dealer hold back? I just can't believe this!

I've strictly done all of my negotiations over the phone with the internet department of Expressway Toyota in Miami, FL. I've purchased a Limited 2WD with the following options:

    Phantom Gray Pearl/Oak Leather
    Toyo Guard Protection Group (XY70)
    Sunroof Wind Deflector (CF10)
    Color-Keyed Grille W/stnls Steel Insert (CG90)
    Rear Spoiler (CX90)
    DVD System (ED20)
    JBL/6 CD Changer (EJAT)
    Driver & Side airbags (GYAT)
    Factory wheel locks (LK10)
    Cargo Net (PC50)
    Carpet Mats/Trunk Mat (PV50)
    Daytime Running Lights (RLAT)

The MSRP on the vehicle is $45,832 I was able to get them down to $42,566 (including a B.S. Dealer Preparation Fee which they stated was $569). My sales person initially tried to tack on the Dealer Prep Fee to the $42,566 price but her boss agreed to include the Dealer Prep Fee in the $42,566 price (They probably just waived the B.S. fee). Now I really only wanted to pay no more than 91% of the MSRP (I got that from Kiplinger's Annual Car Buyer's Guide - Decemebr 2003). But I ended up paying 91.7% of the Dealer Prep Fee plus the MSRP. I feel I paid about $800 to $900 more than I should have but including the Dealer Prep Fee maybe it’s more like $300 to $400.

Do most of you agree with my assessment or did I actually get a good deal?

An additional factor is that I'll be exporting this vehicle to the US Virgin Islands where the MSRP on the same vehicle would be at least $10,000 more.

I'm also intrigued by the fact that everyone seems to be trying to get they're vehicles for about $500 over invoice. Is this the proper buying perspective or is a percentage of the MSRP O.K.?

P.S. I don't mind brutal honesty. I’m really looking for honest and direct insight from as many people as possible.
  • slcamtslcamt Member Posts: 37
It sounds like you got a great truck with some great options. Why even worry about a few hundred dollars after spending over 40k of them. That few hundred won't matter after the first time you drive it. Please just enjoy the truck and forget about it.
  • katzatkatzat Member Posts: 45
The reason most of the folks here discuss the pricing of vehicles relative to the invoice rather than the MSRP (or sticker price) is that the invoice, minus any manufacturer to dealer incentives, is the most accurate figure available to reflect how far the dealership can go with the price when dealing with a savvy customer. The sticker price generally represents roughly 11%-13% markup over the factory invoice price of the vehicle. Furthermore, there are additional boxes on the sticker where the dealership can place additional items such as undercoating, regional price adjustments, and dealership installed options.

The list of options you provided for your vehicle had a few that I couldn’t locate here on Edmunds. Perhaps they were dealership installed options. Assuming that the invoice on your vehicle was 88.7% of the MSRP (as it was for the ’04 Limited 4x4 I purchased a couple months ago), the invoice price for the truck was probably close to $40.637.

If you believe what folks on this site say with regard to the prices they are paying for these trucks (generally $500 above invoice for ‘04s – which is what I was paid for mine, plus the bogus regional advertising fee of roughly $300-$350), I would expect that you could have purchased your Sequoia for somewhere around $41,500 (at least in the Chicagoland area or one of the other regions where folks are buying the Sequoias for $500 - $800 above invoice).

Of course this doesn’t mean that you could have done this in Miami, but I believe these prices are only available to people that know what the invoice is and how the game works. Otherwise, when you consider the price of the vehicle to be some number relative to MSRP, shaving $3,000+ seems great, when in fact it really isn’t.
  • gtscotgtscot Member Posts: 4
I've been researching pricing strategies for a couple of weeks now. I thought that Holdback refered to a % of MSRP or Invoice that was NOT invoiced to the dealer (i.e. held back) and therefore was extra unshown revenue that the dealer realizes in the total revenue. Holdbacks + customers price = revenue. So why would a dealer show Holdback as a cost ? as in #451 above?
Also in the Southeast(Fl) there is a delivery of $575, a Admin fee 0f $575 and also a Dealer Fee of $289to $400 all of which really throws Edmunds reported delivery and fees way out the window. Edmunds says delivery in Florida should be -$210.
Can anyone shed any light on this. $1500 in "fees" seems rather high to me.
  • adolledadolled Member Posts: 6
Just bought my new Sequoia and I believe I got a great price. MSRP of $37,045, Invoice around $33,000. I paid $32,500 and no advertising fee.
  • gtscotgtscot Member Posts: 4
Never mind!! I just read Edmunds tutorial on Holdbacks. Sorry.
However I'd still like to know about all these Southeast fees if anyone has knowledge. !

Can anyone tell me if the 2004 Sequoia SR5 is available with the preferred package (PM). I have talked to about 5 dealerships in SoCal and they all tell me the brochures/websites are incorrect and only cloth seats are available in the SR5.

I have also submitted a request with Carsdirect for a 2004 SR5, gray ext., charcoal int, preferred package, alloy wheel #2, keyless, roof rack, floor mats, and cargo net. Their quote was $32,889 which is thousands less than initial quotes I have received from the local dealers.

Thank you in advance for any help.

Want to buy an '04 Limited 4x4 with DVD, curtain and side air bags, upgraded stereo, rear seat audio, and spoiler. Edmunds invoice is $42,342. TVM is $43,858. Dealer quoted MSRP is $48,097. Without any negotiating the fleet manager gave me a price of $44,075. I am in Northern CA. Any thoughts?
  • adolledadolled Member Posts: 6
I bought the car at South Coast Toyota in Southern California. I live in San Diego, 1 1/2 hours south of the dealership. Nobody in San Diego would even come close to their price. It was a little far to drive, but well worth it.

Let me know if you need more information!

Found out yesterday that the 2004 SR5 is available with the preferred package (PM) in Northen California but not SoCal. Leather seats are important to my wife so I am willing to make the drive from Ventura County.

Does anyone know of a good Toyata dealership in Northern California? If so, what is your experience with their prices? Please help.

I'm in DC - what dealer did you buy from? Was this a brand new 2004? (i.e. not a demo).

Sounds like you got a great deal.
  • patdavispatdavis Member Posts: 1
I see lots of experiences posted here related to $100 over invoice or $500 over invoice. But what is invoice. I define invoice as only

    Base Model Invoice +
    Options Invoice

Then there are items below the line such as:
    Destination +
    Advertising +
    Wholesale Financing +
    Hold Back

I understand destination and advertising - but isn't the hold back built into the base/option manufacturer's invoice price?

The dealer has told me that invoice is everything listed above and that my offer of $500 over is added after all the extras (destination, etc.) And they did not tell me about the extras until I agreed to $500 over invoice. I think they are double dipping?

    Any thoughts or clarifications?

I was looking for GREEN, RED or BULE SR5 with almost all options that LIMITED has (except one's I can not get on SR5). I went to most of the dealers in NOVA. Finally I found this one (BLUE MARLIN) at Koons Toyota in Vienna (On Rte 7 in Tysons). It is brand new with 6 mile on it. Toyota shipped it to the dealer on Nov 19, 2003 and I bought it on Nov 29, 03. If you Need more info, email dhira_98@yahoo.com.

IMO - the destination charge is part of invoice - but all the other stuff is not.

Many will claim that these other fees must be paid by dealer - so they should be included.

The wholesale financing and hold back are not part of invoice.

Tell this dealer to shove it and find one that at least pretends to be honest.

Try an Advanced Search from the left sidebar if you are still looking for info on Southeast Toyota (SET) distribution fees, etc.

    2004 RWD SR5 FLORIDA
    AG(x17 whls),CQ,DR,EJ,GY,KE,LF,SR,LA80(PIO LTHR),
    TOYOTA MOP-N-GLOW etc,& Del'y.
$36K out the door plus state sales tax and dmv tag & title fees.
Dealer tried to slide in prep "fee" of $400 on top of the $36K, but I caught it and had it absorbed into the $36K. I don't know how much that is above invoice. If I listen to the dlr he is going into the poorhouse tomorrow. (yeah right!!). If I listen to another dlr, its $750 over invoice. I suspect its more like $1K to $1.2K above invoice. I was on a short time crunch and there aren't too many of this configuration availalbe in the colors I wanted (White/oak)in the time frame, so I wasn't able to play one against the other as much.
I'm pretty happy that I got what I wanted, (or I will be when it arrives in about a week) from the Port. Incidently the 36K is the same price that Carsdirect.com says they can get it for. But whether that includes dealer prep fee or not I don't know.
