    C

Not a weather condition you see very often.

Where's that coming from? I heard you guys were experiencing some global warming out there but not enough to catch fire.

Meanwhile on the east coast we're having a rather cool summer. Hasn't hit 90 since early June.

Big weed market in Seattle. Everyone must be high as a kite. B)

Good detective work JMonroe, but the article did say at the outset that the amount paid for a car doesn't guaranty more reliability. If you want the best dependability possible, go with tried and true technology, Buick or Toyota product. If you want more cutting edge and newer innovations there is a price to pay, and it will mean more can go wrong. My son who drives his cars long past the expiration date says about things like power windows and a/c, he would rather not have them, just more that can go wrong.
What your daughter saw in your SIL must be "classified" or "top secret"!  Drives his cars through their expiration dates?  Just mentioning that here on Edmunds should be classified as heresy.   :D
Just to clarify, son is a good kid. Has 4 children, lives a simple life, kind of minimalist. Built own house, works hard, fixes his cars himself and keeps them running way past their natural life expectancy. His wife has similar values....glad they found each other. BTW, right now he has a Yukon....great for the logging roads he has to drive on. SIL is the one........don't know what daughter saw in him, except he spins a good story. Seems like a great guy until you start to see through him...and his stories don't add up. He should have money to buy better cars....he gets cars and keeps them until they aren't safe to drive....but, keeps them going. Hates to pay out money for a newer car...hates to pay anyone when he owes them. Has a MBA but has no money sense. I think he got whatever he needed in life, so doesn't understand how money works....doesn't understand the Drivers Method of amortizing costs which show that it might be cheaper to buy a new car than to keep repairing an old car.
Your SIL is the one I was referring to.

You mean northeast coast.  Here on the southeast coast, we tie or break heat records every week.  Been one of the hottest summers I can remember.

This is what I'd really like if I had tons of money to buy, convert to FI and maintain. Might be easier just to dump the emissions choked motor and drop in a modern one.

@oldfarmer50 there are wild fires in British Columbia near the border and the smoke is being blown down into the puget sound area due to the same weather pattern that is also making it extremely hot.

Supposed to clear up this weekend, which I'm looking forward to, as the air quality being this bad is not good for my recovery...

I have a soft spot for those as well.  500 Cubic inch motor that struggles to make 200hp, would be fun with about 400hp.  I'd bet that giant chain that turns the front wheels would be stressed and it maybe a bit scary at high speed, but otherwise ok :open_mouth:

There was one of these for sale at the Mecum auction a couple weeks ago. Amazing how little space there is for passengers, given the length of the vehicle.

Auto sales are slumping but dealers are digging in. But according to an AP story, auto buyers can expect incentives to creep up by $200 or so per car in August and September.

Auto sales for July was on a downward trend for all except for Toyota, Subaru and Alpha Romeo. Not sure how the Euro luxury brands did but here goes:

    — General Motors Co. said sales fell 15.4 percent to 226,107. GM saw double-digit percent declines at GMC, Chevrolet, Cadillac and Buick. Sales of GM’s best seller, the Chevrolet Silverado pickup, dropped 15 percent.

    — Toyota Motor Corp.’s sales rose 3.6 percent to 222,057. Toyota and Lexus trucks and SUVs climbed 17 percent but cars struggled. Sales of the Toyota Prius hybrid fell 26 percent.

    — Ford Motor Co.’s sales dropped 7.5 percent to 200,212. Ford’s SUV sales were up 2 percent but car sales dropped 19 percent. Sales of Ford’s best seller, the F-Series pickup, rose 5.8 percent.

    — Fiat Chrysler’s sales fell 10 percent to 161,477. Its Jeep, Chrysler, Dodge and Fiat brands all saw declines, but Alfa Romeo sales were up. Ram truck sales were flat.

    — Honda Motor Co.’s sales slid 1.2 percent to 150,980. In a reverse, sales of the Civic small car rose 11 percent while sales of the CR-V SUV fell 12 percent.

    — Nissan Motor Co.’s sales fell 3.2 percent to 128,295. Sales of Nissan’s redesigned Titan pickup truck more than tripled, and Infiniti luxury brand sales were up. But car sales dropped 11 percent.

    — Subaru brand sales gained 6.9 percent to 55,703. Subaru’s best-seller, the Outback SUV, was up 20 percent.

    — Hyundai’s sales dropped 27.9 percent to 54,063. Sales of its Tucson SUV rose 46 percent, but that couldn’t overcome deep cuts to rental fleets.

    — Volkswagen brand sales fell 5.8 percent to 27,091 as dealers sold off older Tiguan SUVs and started getting 2018 models on their lots.

Hyundai sales volume is very surprising. In the Boston area the Hyundai brand is very popular. Must be a regional thing.

The 1970 Toronado GT came with a 455 Olds V8 that was about as hot as any ever made with a rated 400HP. That driveline handled it with no issues. It was stout.

Driving to work this morning, two lane road, approaching a stop light, it's red. I'm in the left lane as the right lane has several cars at the light. Only one, a CX-5, in the left lane, not signaling to turn left (not a left turn only lane). You know where this is going... Light turns green, right lane begins to move. Not the CX-5. Then, s-l-o-w-l-y she begins to creep forward, starts turning left, stops due to traffic and finally turns on her left blinkah. I wonder if she texted whoever that she almost forgot to use her blinkah!

    @BuickLaCrosse

I was reading in the Auto Section of our daily newspaper (Sun Sentinel) this morning that GM is about to discontinue the Buick Lacrosse and Chevrolet Impala beginning the 2019 model year. Just as I finally found a reason to begin loving GM once again after many years, they pull the rug out from under me.

The Buick LaCrosse is priced perfectly in the mid-market range of many buyers ($38,000 - $45,000). The car has great styling and the interior looks superb with the exception of the headroom in the rear seat. Why in the world would GM pull such a great looking and performing automobile from their lineup? I have no answer - maybe one of you guys has some rationale for this one. :'(

My 16 year old Frigidaire microwave oven bit the dust last night as I was about to heat up my dinner. It worked perfectly at lunchtime when I heated up a couple of Hebrew National hot dogs for lunch. It was the touch screen that bit the dust. So, since I am alone and I do not cook very much since I live on frozen dinners, Tyson Chicken filet tenders and frozen vegetables which I microwave, if I wanted to continue eating to stay alive, it was either eat out every night or go out and buy a new microwave oven.

The Frigidaire was 2 cu ft cooking area and 1200 watts. So I drove over to Loews and they had nothing that size - most of them were 1.4 cu ft. So I drove over to Home Depot and they had an LG 2.0 cu ft unit with 1200 watts of power on sale from $199 to $157. So I bought it and set it up on the counter top in my kitchen. Works fine, etc. I think I bought the Frigidaire at Brandsmart, but I remembered how difficult it was to find help or even get someone to help me load the car from that store. So it was Home Depot that got my business. If this LG lasts as long as the Frigidaire lasted, I would be a very happy guy - especially since I would be almost 90 years old when it bit the dust - probably well after I passed on.

I have an appointment with a general surgeon tomorrow because my Primary Care Physician said he found a tumor just above my wrist in my forearm area. I had been having quite a bit of pain there and he diagnosed it as some sort of tumor. He said it was infringing on my nerves in that arm (right forearm) and that it had to be removed if I was going to get any relief. I just pray it is not malignant - considering I had suffered from liver cancer last year. Very scary. If it's not one thing, it's another - the story of my life. :@

It's a large sedan, and interest in them is dying out. I'm sure my son will mourn their passing too. All their profits are in smaller vehicles and SUVs now (and for Chevy, trucks) so it makes sense to jettison the large cars.

That'd be a strange place for liver cancer to spread so maybe it's something benign. My wife has a benign tumor on a salivary gland that we've been watching. Fortunately when we went for a check up last week it had shrunk which is the best possible news as milignant tumors don't shrink.

Since 2 Subaru's are on my very short list to replace my Fusion (the WRX and the Legacy 3.6R), just for giggles I called Subaru of America today and asked if they had any kind of loyalty offer. The guy on the phone put me on hold to talk to his supervisor (like talking to the sales manager?).

When he came back on the phone after a minute or two he said they are going to send a coupon for $1,000 off on a new Subaru lease or purchase. He said to negotiate my best deal the give then coupon to the dealer for an additional $1,000 off.

I just looked at my email and there it is.

I am the worlds best buyer....of books! I have been retired for about 6 years now and I would truly make the worst possible employee they could find. I have no motivation to work, I can play tennis and/or pickleball everyday, read a few newspapers, read my book, watch a bit of Netflix (the British mysteries are incredible, try Broadchurch, Happy Valley, The Fall or Scott and Bailey). I wouldn't hire me, playing all day long takes up all my time.

I know the book industry inside out and I know what people like to read. Maybe I would go to them if they made me an offer I couldn't refuse. That is unlikely because Amazon is going to take over the world....the day is coming...just to stay on topic, when Amazon will be selling cars.

Can we all say. . . love?

    I knew you could.

I hesitate to come out against love but those commercials are the most blatantly manipulative things I've ever seen. To an old crab like me it has the opposite effect.

Can I answer "C - None of the above"?

This is what I'd really like if I had tons of money to buy, convert to FI and maintain. Might be easier just to dump the emissions choked motor and drop in a modern one.

    Check out those overhangs !
The overhangs add up to more than the wheelbase!

Mike, hope this latest issue is resolved easily and soon. Man, if anyone deserves a few years of nothing negative it is you....you are long overdue for some peaceful R&R.

Why do people love their SUVs so much, and car sales are really off? I have enjoyed my SUVs, but, I really like the driving dynamics of a car more. And, an SUV seems more work related rather than "fun of driving" related like a car does.
People do like the extra room in an SUV, I think they feel safer with higher seating and more metal, and baby boomer find it easier to get in and out of SUVs.
I like having the trunk closed off.......and not hearing things move back there....especially ww fluid, and I like a rear window being behind the rear seat, and less space to try to cool or heat.

I'm going to very careful what I buy from Amazon.
A few years ago, I bought a power washer and paid a few bucks for an extended warranty.
When I got it, all you had to do was go online and provide the serial number.
It didn't have one and I looked everywhere on it.
    It does work, though.

After quite a few years, my portable air pump developed a problem.
It still works, but it's harder to use.
Wanted to replace it with the same one but there are lots of complaints.
Just about all of them from Amazon, so I'm thinking people are getting refurbished units.

Our Fridge has air and water filters than should be replaced every 6 months.
Went to Home Depot and bought an air filter for $20(it's smaller than 3x3!) and water filter for $50.
Decided to look and Amazon next time.
Found some deals, basically 1/2 price, actually both 2 for the price of one.
Both air filters were obviously rehabbed, the filter material wasn't even cut to the same shape as the frame and only had tape on 2 sides instead of 4.
First water filter seemed almost hollow, although something rattled around in it.
Used it for 6 months since the water came out ok. Did it filter any of it? Who knows.
Just put the second on in about a week ago.
It didn't rattle, but hardly any water would go through it.
Went to Home Depot, paid what I paid last time and the filter works just fine.

Kindle books, I'm all in on that with Amazon.

image, utility (I will always have at least one vehicle that can carry bulky stuff), higher seating position. And did I mention image?

and with many of the CUVs now, the driving dynamics issue is much less of a concern. They drive pretty nice.

    And did I mention image?

Since 2 Subaru's are on my very short list to replace my Fusion (the WRX and the Legacy 3.6R), just for giggles I called Subaru of America today and asked if they had any kind of loyalty offer. The guy on the phone put me on hold to talk to his supervisor (like talking to the sales manager?).

When he came back on the phone after a minute or two he said they are going to send a coupon for $1,000 off on a new Subaru lease or purchase. He said to negotiate my best deal the give then coupon to the dealer for an additional $1,000 off.

I just looked at my email and there it is.

    Nice.

Wow, they either really want to move some iron or you said the magic word. Did they ask you any pre qualifying questions or was your simple inquiry enough?

The guy asked for a VIN. I happened to have the letters they sent trying to get me to buy extended warranties. They had the VIN. He could see that I have bought 5 Subaru's and still own 2 of them.

Being a natural cynic don't you think they put a notice in their dealer system so anywhere you go they will know you have that $1000 hold card? I would be interested as to how that will effect the store's willingness to deal.

I actually really enjoy driving my little Encore. I'm sure it has zero image but it's practical, easy to maneuver in tight spaces, and both comfortable and fun to drive.
