A old-car friend sold his '71 Cutlass convertible (lovely car, lime green metallic with a white buckets & console interior) after his wife sadly died prematurely. Driving in it was what they did together and after that happened he just couldn't keep it. Sad.
Anyway, he told me that he bought a new Camaro convertible instead and wants to drive it to the west coast and then back east across the US. Given the size of the trunk, I hope he travels lightly. Man, that is ridiculously small.
My whole point is that you really don't know what someone's motivation for driving what they drive. Sam Walton used to drive an old pickup truck.
I do love cars and a spark might be on my short list next time I am in the market for a new car. My car is slowly turning into a commuter vehicle as now when me and she who must be obeyed go out it's usually in her car (it's newer, gets better gas mileage and a bit more comfortable). And with me picking up my Honda this weekend I will be driving my car less and less. So basic bare bones transportation sitting in traffic going to and from work is all I need.
But is it all you WANT?
no it's not all I want but if the car is being used 90+% for commuting to and from work in heavy rush hour traffic it's all I NEED. Getting what I want just to commute would be paying more with very little benefit.
Isn't that like saying I don't drive for the love of driving, I don't care what I drive, as long as it gets me to work and back as cheaply inexpensively as possible?
If I had a budget of $11000 to spend on a car....I wouldn't buy that Sparky thing no matter what. I would hate it every moment I was in it. It has "zero" appeal, and I doubt it will last for 5 or 6 years anyway...made with the cheapest most minimal parts. We traded in the 2013 Passat for $11000, I would buy that anytime over the Spark.

Guess this baby would be out of the question then?
It was bumper to bumper in 6-7 places. Just arrived here in Ponte Vedra. Trip usually takes me 4-1/2 hours - it took 7 hours. Ugh! I'm exhausted
Happy to hear you made it safely.
My Delray Beach SIL is staying put. Her health won't allow her to get out right now.
After Wilma hit back in 2005 (I think), my dearly departed brother had hurricane shutters installed. While he was still alive they were not needed but were used last year during a near miss hurricane but they might have to do their job with this one but of course we hope not.
FWIW, I'm just getting back in here to do some posting. I fell off a 4 foot wall onto the concrete driveway the day before we went on vacation August 11. Ended up braking my right wrist which I had checked at the Emergency Room the day after we got back a week later.
Just so nobody accuses me of getting old and no longer having good balance, I have been telling people that ask about the removable splint on my wrist, that Mrs. j pushed me. I hope you guys back me up.
jmonroe
Good grief, JM. I am so sorry to hear of your wrist fracture. Better start learning to use the left arm now! I hope you heal quickly. As far as backing you up that you were "pushed" off the ladder by Mrs.J, I heard you pushed her first and she just pushed you back.
What a thing to happen JM. Glad to hear you survived the vicious attack. Guess you can still type with just your right hand.
This would be just the thing if you were a regular shopper at Bass Pro Shops.
This is a dealer who will not order anything without a black interior, but then they do this monument to questionable taste (the "customization" is apparently on spec and on their own dime) and have it sit on their showroom floor for many months. A real head-scratcher.
Someone will buy it......always find someone with no taste. Maybe they can sell it on the idea the cops won't spot you - with the camouflage look.

Hey, Michaell, thanks for posting the story on the Toyota Yaris iA. Still love that car. It would be a much better car than a Chevy Spark or Mitsubishi Mirage. I see a lot of Mitsubishi Mirage's here in KC. Easy financing, no doubt. I'm sticking with my 2011 Kia Soul for now. Good car.
We're moving on Monday morning to Wenatchee - whoo-hoooo! I hear half of Washington's on fire . Yikes.
So Washington is giving you a warm welcome??

I used to say that "no one ever went broke underestimating the taste of the American public," attributed to H.L.Mencken (he of "anyone who hates children and dogs can't be all bad" -- whoops, wrong, that one was W.C. Fields) but it appears I didn't have it exactly right. Here's the real deal:
“No one in this world, so far as I know — and I have searched the records for years, and employed agents to help me — has ever lost money by underestimating the intelligence of the great masses of the plain people. Nor has anyone ever lost public office thereby.”
To each their own (do I get credit for the ambiguous pronoun?).
From my observation, I see people who are in upper management who have good incomes, then there are the service/retail jobs at the bottom of the scale. Not as many of those mid income jobs like blue collar management, good factory jobs, sales jobs, etc. The mid-range jobs are disappearing....and I have heard personal stories and read about it. Instead of a good factory job with a high hourly rate, benefits and a pension people are becoming Uber drivers.
It all depends on what skill set one has. The other day I was struck by something I really hadn't noticed before. I was on the used lot of the local Porsche/Jag/Land Rover dealer on Sunday and there a lot of people doing what I was doing, i.e. browsing while they were closed. They were all much younger than me, appearing to be no older than early 30s and in some cases even younger. The cars they drove there in were things like an Audi S5, a M-B AMG, and a Cayenne. Either they were living on daddy's money or (more likely I suspect) worked in the tech sector here, where if you are near the top you can rake in big bucks for a period of time before you either go bust or make even bigger money when you get bought up. I remember seeing the same thing around here just prior to the tech bubble bursting in 2000 or so. Kids just a few years out of university were made instant millionaires by running little tech outfits for 2-3 years that got bought up by the big guys. It is a very different world out there.
BTW, two of the vehicles drawing a lot of attention were these:

The red one was really eye-catching. I liked it better than the Grabber Blue one.
I often wonder how 1 yo exotic cars end up at dealerships. Are they traded for a new toy by guys like Mike or are they repoed from someone with a 300 credit score? Must be tough to feed champagne tastes on a beer budget.
My beer budget drew me to this:
https://albany.craigslist.org/cto/d/acura-tl-2002-very-clean-and/6271565866.html
I love...LOVE that generation of TL, and I'm already an Acura fan. That one looks in great shape, if the background on it is relatively clean. If it were me, and the CARFAX checks out, I would overnight 30 Benjamins to the owner and tell him I'll arrange shipping.
I like that car, a lot. Driven a few of them (before I ever bought an Acura, which didn't happen until 2005) of that generation. Always thought they were a great blend of luxury and sport.
Plus, probably have another 100K+ miles left with no major repairs on the horizon. And, it will never leave you stranded, or be sitting in a dealership garage for months at a time.
my 2000 MY version of that car was at 175K when I sold it, with the original trans still going strong. Probably helps to not abuse it, and change the fluid on a regular basis. Or I was just lucky. But at 75K, if the fluid looked and smelled clean, and it showed no signs of bad shifting, I would have no problem with it at that price.
it even has the same tape deck adapter wire hanging out that I used to run the XM Roadie!
That camo GMC would have sold quickly just north of me in Oklahoma. Why a dealer in Nova Scotia ordered it is beyond me. Bet the price tag will make you gulp.

these 2 storms are certainly going to be propping up car sales later this year. Though probably putting serious upside pressure on used prices. maybe I should start looking to buy ASAP
Venture....that's very elegant looking in my eyes. I like it. Big congrats!
Not knowing much about Subarus, do their dealerships negotiate? Or, is it pretty much "people love us so pay what's on the sticker'!
Another added to the Subaru fold -- nice looking car, Venture. I'm sure you'll enjoy it. Looks like the same wheels our Forester has.
The Subaru dealers definitely are willing to deal, especially in Colorado. We got a very nice discount from a Denver dealer and the Tucson guy came way down from his initial position, but it wasn't as good as the Denver guys. In Metro Phoenix the selection was poor and the nearest dealer wasn't offering very good pricing at all. It worked out to about $4K under MSRP or $1100 under "invoice," but it was a cash deal with no trade.
I forgot to add previously about handing the dealer the $1,000 certificate from Subaru Corp. that they sent me after I called them and asked about a loyalty bonus after we were done fighting, I mean negotiating trade value of my Fusion. He didn't blink an eye and said he doesn't understand why more people don't call and ask about a discount. They only get two or three of them a year.
Nice looking Legacy! It's a great car. You are going to love it, especially with the 3.6 H6. You'll find it very comfortable. The Technology is very user friendly. The eyesight system is simply fantastic.
The dealer where I bought & serviced my former 2015 Legacy is a Ford dealer as well. Before I bought my Infiniti, I poked around the Fusion boards looking for an insanely cheap lease on a Fusion Sport. I brought the idea up to my service advisor, & he told me to stick with Subaru.
Enjoy it!
Thanks Bradd. I haven't had time yet to use all the features. It's a little mind boggling.
One thing I have to figure out is the Reverse Automatic Braking System thingy when backing up. Most times when I back out of my garage and approach the street it wants to stop because of the difference in grades, I suppose it thinks there is something there other than a street. I guess I will have to turn it off until I get out of the garage...or maybe just turn it off.
I checked to see if my credit and social security info with bank info was compromised by the Equifax hacking breach. My info "was" compromised. Now I need to find out what I should do re: safeguarding my credit cards, bank info, etc.

There are apparently 142,999,999 other people at similar risk. Might be a while until the bad guys get around to you.
The Legacy 3.6R Limited I ordered a few weeks ago came in yesterday; about 2 weeks before I was expecting it.
It has almost all the nannies, but you can turn them off. One thing that works pretty well is the adaptive LED headlights. It has some things my Fusion didn't have, but the Fusion has some things this car either doesn't have or doesn't work as well. It is a little taller than the Fusion, but the seats are a little lower.
Driver - you would like the big windows and visibility.
As I mentioned, I would have probably kept the Fusion for a while if both the local dealers were just OK.
I don't know how long I am going to keep it, but there's not much out there under $40k with AWD which was also my set limit as per GG.
I'm still learning.
Nice car, good luck with it.
Just one question...why did you break the field's rules? The sign clearly says "no littering".
I doubt you'll be disappointed with the 3.6R engine. I'll never be sorry for making Mrs. j get it on her 2012 Legacy Limited.
Remind me to tell you how she recognizes her car from all the other silver Legacy's in the various parking lots she parks in. She's pretty clever.
Don't forget to give us the 1000 mile report.
jmonroe
The sign says Please.
How does she recognize her car from all the other silver Legacy's?
I need to add Sube to the shopping list. Too bad no Turbo Legacy, or Imprezza (other than the WRX, which is probably too high strung).
I agree. The WRX is high strung. If I didn't think my wife would do to me what jmonroes wife did to him, I would probably have one in my garage right now.

Outstanding, Venture! I wish you many years of enjoyment and trouble-free driving. Love the Suburu's styling and stance. Probably the best car in its class - or perhaps in many ways, Suburu is best of most classes. Great engineering and great value for the money. Enjoy!
Some things I was noticing.....lots of people want to be professionals, so we have dentists and chiropractors on every block. Now we have professionals working all kinds of crazy hours, pharmacists working 24 hour store, doctors in walk in clinics, dentists working evenings, call 1-800 Lawyer 24 hours a day........I am so glad I had my working career in the good old days.
Remember when all retail business was closed on Sundays even car dealers and supermarkets.
iluv, or someone, just explain this to me. Can a person who drives a Chevy Spark really love cars? I understand a person who only cares about a car as a way to get from A to B, or a person who's priority is the environment, or a person who is a dedicated minimalist, or someone who just likes to spend the least money possible for a car.....BUT, how does one enjoy the art of driving, the pride of ownership, the beauty of design, the appreciation for fine engineering....in one of these;
btw, the Soule, the Forte, the Yaris have some cuteness and personality, but that Sparky car.........
I wonder if this hyping up every weather event makes people cynical, and think the storm won't be as bad as they say. If they keep this up, people will just ignore the warnings.
Buffalo weather is so hyped that you wonder whether you should start building an ark or tuning the snowmobile. But the local channels always are caught by surprise by real storms. Why else are there always people stranded on the Thruway?
The majority of millennials (defined as someone reaching young adulthood by the year 2000) are making less, in terms of buying power, than their parents did at the same age. It's no wonder there are so many subprime candidates.
I think that a greater percentage of the baby boomers and their parents rented housing and bought used cars. This sense of entitlement to a new house and a new car is something recent fostered by business upon the Millennials. Hence banks and auto companies going bankrupt.

Wow Houdini....you are a genius....who would have thought..........
Wiki: The Chevrolet Spark is a city car produced by GM Korea, originally marketed prominently as the Daewoo Matiz. It has been available solely as a five-door hatchback. ... After the General Motors company took control over Daewoo Motors in 2002, it has increasingly been marketed under the Chevrolet badge.
@abacomike, so glad you are safe and sound with your brother in N. Fl. Now, not only are you in a safer area but you bought time to either ride out a less intense storm or escape further west to get out if it's path.
My two older sisters chose to ride out the storm in S Fl. One is in a high rise, built like a brick $h*t house, with hurricane shutters, but the other is in a small patio home in Aventura. She and BIL declined the offer to stay with othe sister and BIL. I'm terribly worried about both especially the one in Aventura. I warned her graghically on what could happen, and despite this and the recent "lesson" from Harvey in Houston, she is going to take her chances with this nasty storm....so sad .
That activity key is silly. Maybe not the idea itself, but the execution. Just make the wristband the fob and do away with all the extra steps. Hold my wrist to the logo? Then push a button and do it again to reopen? Ya know, my 2008 Chrysler only required me to have the key in my pocket when I touch the door handle to make it unlock. Way to move backwards, Jag.

It's still like that to some extent in Europe, Germany anyway. Restaurants and some food related stores will be open, but outside of a train or gas station, most everything else is closed.

My Volt does the same thing backing out of my garage. It may recognize where the garage door threshold is and thinks it's closed. Very annoying and I might miss an actual obstacle one day because I've learned to ignore this little blip. I try to be careful and look anyway as we do have families with children in this complex. Other than that, the sensors work perfectly and I love them. They've been a godsend backing out between huge SUVs at the Mall. The forward sensors are also a big help as today's cars tend to slope downwards in a way that makes it hard to see where the car ends. So I would never turn them off.
@abacomike, don't worry overmuch about hacking. Equifax should send you something in the mail soon anyway. If it happens you can take steps accordingly. Our IRS accounts were hacked a few years ago, but whoever did it had no interest in credit card info. I suspect this would be similar.

I hope they make out just fine. The new storm track takes it more inland rather than skirting the coastline. That would expose the east coast to the dirty side of the storm - heavier rains and higher wind speeds.
The hurricane's latest path brings it right over Jacksonville, but as a catagory 1 or 2. My brother is having his hurricane shutters put up tomorrow. I just can't run anymore. It is what it is carnaught.

She looks around for dual tailpipes!
Well, yes and no. She isn't very car savvy.
Since there are tons of silver Legacy's (Subie had to get a good deal on that paint), Mrs. j found herself standing behind the rear bumper of lots of cars that did not belong to her trying to open the trunk with the FOB. Of course it didn't work so she went to Plan B and was plenty proud of herself for doing it.
To use her words, as best as I can remember her telling me this about 2 months after she got her 2012 Legacy, "I just look for those two round things under the rear bumper". When she told me this I told her that cars today don't have real bumpers. What you see are bumper covers, and BTW, those round things are tailpipes. Her response was, "don't get technical with me. I'm just happy to finally know how to find my car now".
I told you she isn't car savvy but she's happy so I ain't going to rock the boat.

I guess I'll get it figured out soon.
One other weird thing - if I am sitting in traffic and the car in front of me moves up, it will make a noise and a warning will show on the dashboard, between the speedometer and tachometer, that says something like, "The vehicle in front of you has moved".
Only thing I can figure is it's to let someone who is staring at their phone know that the world is still operating.
the dual tailpipes since there are very few 6 cylinder models around?
She looks around for dual tailpipes!
Since there are tons of silver Legacy's (Subie had to get a good deal on that paint), Mrs. j found herself standing behind the rear bumper of lots of cars that did not belong to her trying to open the trunk with the FOB.
To use her words, as best as I can remember her telling me this about 2 months after she got her 2012 Legacy, "I just look for those two round things under the rear bumper".
I told you she isn't car savvy but she's happy so I ain't going to rock the boat.

There is a panic button on the FOB.....she could just press that!
Remember my SIL who gave his son their 18 year old Volvo, and he did a $4000 repair one year, then a $4000 repair the next year, and then the car broke down again, and he scrapped it?
It broke one of Drivers rules of life....don't spend more to repair a car than what it is worth. I advised his son (my grandson) to lease a car, he had a good job, and $8000 could have paid for 2 years of a lease, and helped him to buy a new car that could last for 10 years!
In 2008 the SIL bought my 2004 BMW X3 which he bought from the dealer....not from me. It has been a good car for them but this year it broke down and the estimate to repair is $8000 (it probably all added up since he lets a lot of little things go). His youngest daughter was using it and she is a student in university. Instead of just scrapping it he told her he knows a guy who can probably fix it up for a few hundred dollars.
Even if that is possible, would you let your kid drive a car that needs $8000 worth of repairs, drive it with less than $1000 worth of work done to it?
I think, what will happen is, this questionable mechanic will try to fix it for about $800, then it will break down in a week, and another $800 will get blown. There is being smart thrifty....and then there is false economizing!

Anyway, he told me that he bought a new Camaro convertible instead and wants to drive it to the west coast and then back east across the US. Given the size of the trunk, I hope he travels lightly. Man, that is ridiculously small.

Isn't that like saying I don't drive for the love of driving, I don't care what I drive, as long as it gets me to work and back as
cheaplyinexpensively as possible? If I had a budget of $11000 to spend on a car....I wouldn't buy that Sparky thing no matter what. I would hate it every moment I was in it. It has "zero" appeal, and I doubt it will last for 5 or 6 years anyway...made with the cheapest most minimal parts. We traded in the 2013 Passat for $11000, I would buy that anytime over the Spark.

I hope you guys back me up.
jmonroe Happy to hear you made it safely.

I warned her graghically on what could happen, and despite this and the recent "lesson" from Harvey in Houston, she is going to take her chances with this nasty storm....so sad
