2 things wrong with that plan. One is that I have a hard time believing our ultra firm and thick mattress will cooperate. The other more important is that we would need a split adjustable. And I assume that also eliminates the possibility of continuing to have Cali King length, which is also a problem for me. Was pondering the possibility of sawing our mattress in half. ;)

The mattress company substituted a brand new bed frame for the floor model that was broken.  The new adjustable frame moves the head of the bed up and down as well as the bottom is the bed up and down at no additional cost.  It will be like a hospital bed - can’t get more comfortable than that - but with a queen mattress.  Got lucky on that - for sure.

One thing I forgot to mention about my foam mattress was how hard it was to get out of bed in the morning because I sunk into it so far. Maybe your frame will eject you. :D

Other thing to note about most foam sets is that they make sitting on the edge of the bed to put socks/shoes on more difficult because they do not usually have edge support.
Ab, you must have got a mattress made from the softest foam known to mankind. The thought never occurred to me that I sunk down so far I was in a fissure and couldn't get out, and sitting on the edge of the bed is not a problem at all. Have you considered a firminator mattress?

We bought a Royal Pedic years ago; no complaints.

I've heard those are nice, but I really don't want my mattress to cost more than my first new car. B)

Which reminds me of looking at a Dux bed 15 or so years ago. They were supposed to be "the last bed you will ever buy". I found one I liked and asked the lady for the price (they were not marked). Instead of telling me, she wrote the price on a piece of paper and slid it across the counter like new car salesmen used to do. I looked at the price - $7,200 - and thanked her for her time, wished her luck, and left the showroom. I wonder how many of those they sold per month?

I finally broke down today and bought a new mattress.

I thought you were going to say "CAR"!

Whewwww, you had me nervous there. When we tried out a memory foam mattress in the store I was going to take out my set of keys, which are fairly chunky. The saleslady said, no, keep them in your pocket and lie on them. The keys sink into the foam and you don't feel them.

If you can afford memory foam, it is well worth trying.
Well he could sleep in his car--it's pretty roomy. :p

Well, if you look at reviews on sites like Casper, Endy and others you will see many remarks about the problem of sitting on it due to no edge support. That was also my experience with the Tempurpedic. Mine was certainly too soft but when I woke up in the morning I had to rock myself side to side for a while to get out of the divot I was in after sinking into it overnight. It was just a bad experience all around.

I see a Canadian company called Novusbed offers 3 strengths of foam mattress including an extra-firm so they could be worth a try. But all those foam mattress companies reviews are pretty much the same. The majority of people say they are the best thing ever, but there are significant minorities on all the manufacturer sites that say the identical mattress is either way too soft or way too hard. It's bizarre. I think most are tailored to a median-sized person, so if you're big they feel too soft and if you're a lightweight person they feel too hard.

Well, mattress and adjustable frame delivered.  The mattress is way too soft for me - not the same one I tried out at the store.  Manager said it has to be a defective mattress.  So I went back to the store and picked out a Simmons Beautyrest Firm mattress that will fit on the adjustable frame I have.  The mattress company says it is suitable for adjustable frames.  They are delivering the new mattress this evening.  The manager expedited it for me.  The foam mattress was $1000 and the floor model frame was $250.00.  The new mattress is $1799 and the new adjustable frame (adjusts head and legs) is $995.00.  The manager did not charge me for the more expensive mattress or the more expensive adjustable frame.

Now that’s what I call good business ethics and service.  I paid $1250.00 for everything.  Impressive - Mattress Firm is the company.  There wasn’t the slightest hesitation to swap out mattresses.  ;)

Mike, hope you have better luck with mattresses than me. After an extremely disappointing experience with the next to highest grade Sleep Number bed, I replaced it with the near top of the line Stearns and Foster mattress and box spring. The first one delivered had a grease spot on it, and the 2nd one sagged after a week of usage. Both were brand new in the factory packaging. Now the third one after a year and a half sags right where we sleep. Neither my wife or me are more than average weight for our heights. I should have known after two bad ones that we should have switched brands. As for Mattress Firm’s guarantee, there are many conditions and exclusions. For example, it has to sag an inch(?) before they will replace it, but I believe you still have to pay something sizable on it’s replacement. As for memory foam, from what I hear, they are still very warm to sleep on despite them being improved from the older ones. Geez, they really don’t make them like they used to.

The brand of mattress we bought allows you to special order with a stronger support for the rim area for those who are handicapped and need the stiffer side on a normal mattress. It takes about 2 days to get one made at the "local" factory (actually near Cincinnati somewhere in GraphicGuy's area).

My big concern is that the mattress you tried in the store doesn't match at all the mattress that was delivered? Sort of like ordering a 750Li and getting a Mini? Switch and bait?

We tried mattresses and went with the old style with real quality parts before the foam versions were popular: the brand we chose didn't even have them in the showroom. They do have them now.

Out mattress is flippable. We even considered a new one last year and the store said it was guaranteed for 10 years or something like that. The store sent a zone guy out to check for the depressions in the cotton padding and the foam layers because the mattress was guaranteed. It was still within tolerance. He recommended turning it more often. They cancelled our order for a new one, and said they hoped we came back when we were ready again for a new one.

We had bought two single beds for our son from the store. He's still using both in his apartment as a king bed by putting them together.

You just got the wrong one, that's all. We have had ours for about 10 years now, I think. It was the absolute top model at that time. Thickest and firmest. I am far from median. I can sit on the edge without a problem, and zero sinking.

It is definitely heat sensitive, though. My wife sinks more than me by the time morning rolls around. We call her a heat pump. Still, we're talking maybe 2"-3".

Good luck. It is very odd how the first one you tried felt good and the one you got was too soft. That's exactly what happened to me, though it took a while for it to feel too soft after I got it. Consider yourself lucky that you spotted it so quickly.

First bump in the road with the new ATS has nothing to do with the car itself.

You might recall that back in June I had a go-round with this car when the dealer proposed a convoluted lease-to-purchase deal that I wasn't comfortable with and after my heart diagnosis I cancelled the whole thing. They somehow had managed to report this as a sale to GM without me having signed anything, and I began getting congratulatory emails from Cadillac and SiriusXM.

Anyway, I took delivery of the car 15 days ago. Yesterday I was driving around and realized that my SiriusXM had stopped working. It didn't take me long to conclude that XM had started the 3-month free trial back in June and that was 3 months ago. I called and the lady on the other end confirmed that is what had happened. I explained to her that I just bought the car 2 weeks ago and that the free trial should have begun then. After a lot of her putting me on hold and talking to people there she agreed to restart the trial. I'm sure this isn't the first car that had been reported sold and then not sold so I would guess they have ways to deal with this.

Today I go out in the car and it still isn't working. I call again, get a different person, go over the same thing again. This time the guy on the other end wasn't as helpful. At first he tells me he can set me up with a 3 month plan but that he needs billing info. I say, there's no bill, this is your free trial. He goes away, comes back, says we'll cover it, but we need a credit card. I say I don't want to give you a credit card. He says, but you can cancel your renewal bill after the 3 months by calling us before we renew automatically. I say, I don't think so. He says too bad, that's the best I can do. I say, goodbye.

What a miserable company. My chances of renewing are exactly zero but I am annoyed at not getting my free trial. I may call the dealer on Monday and see what they say.

Sirius/XM is only as good as the representative you get connected to.  Some are awful, some are worse than awful, and one or two are great.

BMW gives you 1 years Satellite Radio at no cost.  After one year, you are on your own.  My year is up on December 15th.  I hate having to deal with them every year - just like my newspaper subscription.  I hope I get hooked up with a representative I can understand.  They outsource to the Asian Continent for customer service and sales.

    Here's my mattress tale:

About 3 months ago we finally replaced our 22 year old mattress. I didn't think we'd like a foam mattress but we tried one in several stores, just to be sure. We were right, no foam job for us. Ended up with a conventional spring mattress that was one level up from the lowest priced mattress in the building. We kept repeating our test because we couldn't believe we were satisfied with the low end model that cost $399 for a queen size. Still satisfied and Mrs. j thinks this is the most comfortable mattress we have ever had. Fortunately, I don't have any back problems and can sleep on just about anything. Like I said before when we were on this subject, 'I could probably sleep with a fitted sheet on a rock'.

I'm sure this comes as no surprise to you guys. After all, I own a wannabe, right?

I hate to intrude on all this exciting mattress talk but I just returned from the first Saratoga Auto Museum car auction. If I die I'm sure heaven will look like this. Hundreds of classics, antiques and modded cars.

Here are a few of my favorites. See if you can identify them all.

I won't post any more now since it seems to screw up page loading. Suffice to say I would be gladly buried in any car I saw today.

I got it at Mattress Warehouse and it is their brand. The salesman said it was probably made my Serta but if I wanted the mattress with the Serta name on it, that one would cost another 100 bucks. As you know I'm not into badges so that's why I got the store brand.

The store brand felt good to both of us and I could tell anybody that asked, it's a Serta since the sheet hides the badge..

After our move and 6 weeks of sleeping on an air bed we were ready to splurge. We got a pretty expensive mattress and box spring made in California. Can't remember the company. It is terrific. I usually can sleep just about anywhere but the air bed finally did me in. Then we got a $99 frame that looks very nice. So that's our economizing!

Those auto pics look amazing! Reminds me of the auto museum in Cleveland. Really fun to see those vintage cars.

I just noticed that this “foam” mattress is getting firmer - more like the one I tried at the store.  The box this mattress came in was no more that 4 foot long by 2 foot wide and 2 foot high.  When they opened it and exposed the mattress to the air, it literally expanded 10 fold.  Now, it’s 3” higher than when they delivered it.  So I called the store and the manager told me it expands over a 24 hour period.  But it is still too plush for me.  I’m a big guy and need a firm mattress.  The one they are delivering tonight is a Serta Beautyrest.  It has gell and foam for the first 3-4 inches of height and then it has all coils.

Supposed to be here in the next hour or two.  Just hope they let the delivery truck in to my condo community - security at the two entrance gates is pretty strict.  I called the gate - just hope they get here soon.

That wire-wheeled Kaiser is pretty cool.

When I was a kid, I had a car bed, it was the 1980s version of this:

    image

Pretty simple, wood sides, shelf under the spoiler area. I really outgrew it by the time I was maybe 13 or so, but it had a sentimental attachment. I think my mom gave it away. My current mattress is about 15 years old and showing it as it wasn't an expensive model, maybe next year.

That White Lincoln Continental is a truly gorgeous car.  My favorite cars from the late 40’s early 50’s are the Studebakker, the Packard, and the ‘56 Buick Roadmaster Convertible.

My Dad bought a new Buick Roadmaster Convertible in December, 1955.  It was white with red leather seats and a black convertible top.  Even the carpeting in the car was red.  Power windows, power seats and dynaflow transmission.  It had a Fireball V8 with a Rochester carb.  Magnificent vehicle - my favorite of the scores of cars he owned.

I'll take that cream colored Continental Mk II. Don't see many Kaiser's. I think they looked a bit cleaner a few years earlier. That blue and white one has a bit too much bric-a-brac for me, but I guess they had to do what they had to do given their financial resources going into the mid 50's.

Mattresses; just aren't made like they used to be made. I'd take the cheapest one that worked because either way your not going to get that much out of it anymore.

speaking of mattresses, we moved our daughter back to college a few weeks ago. She was going into a new apartment after a term abroad, so had nothing. First stop was the bed store to buy her one. the cheap one was (for a full) about $180. Next level up was about $220, and then $240 (ballpark). Turns out the 2nd level up was darned comfy. The 3rd up, we laid on one, and was more comfy than the one we have at home. If it had not been too far for delivery, I would have ordered a set for us, for under $400 for a queen set!

I maybe too late, but I was very interested in the Casper after spending too much money on other mattresses. Found a location in Seattle where I could at least lay down on one. We really liked it and went ahead and ordered one last year and haven't looked back. Light years better that my old tempurpedic.

That said I don't think there is 1 mattress that works for everyone

I hate to intrude on all this exciting mattress talk but I just returned from the first Saratoga Auto Museum car auction. If I die I'm sure heaven will look like this. Hundreds of classics, antiques and modded cars.

Here are a few of my favorites. See if you can identify them all.

I won't post any more now since it seems to screw up page loading. Suffice to say I would be gladly buried in any car I saw today.

If they have it again next year I'll buy Stickguy a ticket as I assue he'll be living here by then.

I like the bumper on the first one.

Another auction car quiz. I tried to get the identifying badge in the frame but didn't. Can you guess what it is?

Well, you can see the Audi rings on it, for g’s sake. And an R8 is an Audi.

Unless this is a trick question, @oldfarmer50 might have an old hooptie camera. Might even have some rust on it. :'(

Could it be one of these...only mine doesn't have a big R8 on the back of it? (it does have Audi rings)

OF maybe you need a newer computer that shows the whole picture!

    I'm pretty sure that's a Lambo, dude. (it's a cliche/meme)

Should have known not to go easy on you guys.

I was amazed how many fairly rare cars were sold in multiples. For example, there were at least three 1957 Chrysler 300C, 2 pristine convertibles and 1 hardop in need of restoration.

Also there were several old Lincolns that I liked.
