I love those forward look Chrysler 300's. The fins and the grille just make it happen.

That would be General Grant and his bartender.

    Very rare....only 484 300C convertibles produced in 1957, and 1918 300C hardtops. The 58s through 61s are even rarer.

A lot of the cars were convertibles, most two doors. Guess they would be the ones worth restoring. Some nice custom bikes too.

During the Civil War Grant was criticized as being a drunkard. There is a story that may or may not be true that Lincoln responding to calls to remove Frank due to his drinking stated "Find out what he's drinking and send a cask to all my generals"

Yes, Grant was often slandered as a drunkard but there is very little evidence of it. Great story, though, and a great general, too.

Wasn’t Grant a “haberdasher”?  I think I read somewhere that he worked as a clothier in his father’s dry goods business.  As far as his drinking, he was not a tea totaler - this is well documented.  But I do not know how heavily he drank - but he did love his bourbon.

As a president, he was distracted by controversy and scandals.  But no one ever questioned his loyalty and nationalism and his dedication to the preservation of the “Union”!

Mike, I forgot to ask (and if you mentioned it, I missed it) - how did you like the Glenlivet you were gifted?

Also, what kind of sleep did you have last night in the new setup?

The Glenlivet is OUTSTANDING!  One bottle is now “history”!  Great taste and smooth as silk.  I have found an alcoholic drink I like better than bourbon.

As for my sleep last night, I was up a couple of times - just getting used to a big bed.  Remember, I’ve been sleeping on a twin for 17 years.  This bed takes up 50% of the area in my bedroom - I use the small bedroom in the front of the condo, not the master bedroom suite.  This is where I have my 50” HD TV.  I love the fact I can raise or lower my head and my legs with the remote.  I think i’ve Died and gone to heaven!   :D

Thanks for the info about Grant...did a quick check and he seemed to be a big drinker, possibly a binge drinker who wasn't inebriated all the time, just sometimes.

Today I saw a BMW 5 Series that looked very similar to this one....everything was black! I get that it looks like a mean machine, but, I can't imagine paying $60 or $70K+ for something that looks like this....and then living with it for 4 or 5 years:

This coloring, does the car justice,

Is that the modern interpretation of "triple black"?

In the past, it used to represent the body color, roof color and interior color.

Now, it's the exterior color, the interior color and the wheel color.

I'm not much in to "older" cars, but ever since I put bumper stickers (remember those) on at Aquarena in San Marcos, TX, back in the early '60s (all we did all day was wander around the parking lot looking at cars -- I think I was 11 at the time), I came to love the look of the '60 Impala, either red with a white stripe or white with a red stripe. Ever since, I've seen all kinds of cars from that era, but never those beloved Impalas. What's up with that? Did the low-riders buy them all up or what?

First bump in the road with the new ATS has nothing to do with the car itself.

You might recall that back in June I had a go-round with this car when the dealer proposed a convoluted lease-to-purchase deal that I wasn't comfortable with and after my heart diagnosis I cancelled the whole thing. They somehow had managed to report this as a sale to GM without me having signed anything, and I began getting congratulatory emails from Cadillac and SiriusXM.

Anyway, I took delivery of the car 15 days ago. Yesterday I was driving around and realized that my SiriusXM had stopped working. It didn't take me long to conclude that XM had started the 3-month free trial back in June and that was 3 months ago. I called and the lady on the other end confirmed that is what had happened. I explained to her that I just bought the car 2 weeks ago and that the free trial should have begun then. After a lot of her putting me on hold and talking to people there she agreed to restart the trial. I'm sure this isn't the first car that had been reported sold and then not sold so I would guess they have ways to deal with this.

Today I go out in the car and it still isn't working. I call again, get a different person, go over the same thing again. This time the guy on the other end wasn't as helpful. At first he tells me he can set me up with a 3 month plan but that he needs billing info. I say, there's no bill, this is your free trial. He goes away, comes back, says we'll cover it, but we need a credit card. I say I don't want to give you a credit card. He says, but you can cancel your renewal bill after the 3 months by calling us before we renew automatically. I say, I don't think so. He says too bad, that's the best I can do. I say, goodbye.

What a miserable company. My chances of renewing are exactly zero but I am annoyed at not getting my free trial. I may call the dealer on Monday and see what they say.

After the third call to SiruisXM last week I finally got someone I could (barely) understand. They renewed my service to the Fusion I traded in over 2 weeks ago. I wrote, plainly in red ink, on both sides of the invoice I returned last year to not automatically renew. I owe them $8.47.

My chance of ever having SXM again is also zero now.

I have been getting lots of "we miss you" emails and junk mail pieces from SXM, now that I've let the subscriptions in both the Outback and Jetta lapse. I supposedly owe $30 or so on the Jetta, but I've ignored those, too - if SXM's business practices allow the subscription to continue after the cutoff date, they deserve not to get paid for that mistake.

The offers are $30 for either 5 or 6 months. I've been ignoring them. I don't drive the Jetta enough to spend the money on it, and the wife/daughter have rigged up a spare iPod to the USB port in the Outback (1900+ songs on it, and it gets updated automatically when new songs are purchased).

I actually don't mind the business model - everything is moving to a subscription model now. It's a millennial thing, I'm told.

It's the customer service that ruins the experience.

But terrible customer service and an assumed ripoff IS their business model. If you let the subscription roll over, it reverts to the crazy high rate, forcing you to call, threaten to cancel, and get transferred to someone who will renew your promotion rate. Nuts.

I don't know about the 60 Impala, but the 62-64 models are huge with lowriders, and there are probably less stock 2 door SS HTs left than modified ones.

I like the 60 Impala flat top 4 door HT.

That's why they don't get a card number - I'm happy to pay the extra $2 for a paper invoice.

That's right. I just went through my annual go round with them for Mrs. j's Subie last week and that is how it works. Now I get to look forward to going through this when my Genny comes due.

I've done this so many times I feel like asking them if they can pull up my past recordings that they say they make for security purposes, so I don't have to repeat my spiel every time. :@

Shifty......I had heard on one of the Auctions TV programs (Meacum?) that the “old” Chrysler 300s continuously bring more money than they had sold for previously. PRetty amazing stat.

As an aside. I know of a couple of people in here looking at Acura TLXs.

Point of reference, did a road trip to Louisville for the Bourbon and Beyond this weekend in Louisville.....plenty of Bourbon, BBQ and about 20 bands, most of which I liked (Stevie Nicks, Band of Horses, Eddie Vedder, Steve Miller among others). Plenty of all types of Bourbon and BBQ, too. All in all, great time except it was hotter than Hades. Couldn’t hang all day for all the bands (just the ones I wanted to see).

Anyway, one tank of gas, up and back, with plenty leftover. Stopped at Costco on the way home yesterday afternoon to “top off”. Results?

Dead on 30 MPG, going through hilly KY, doing between 75-80 MPH the whole way. And, including hitting bumper to bumper getting out of Louisville and getting across the bridge into OH.

I think that’s great (and exactly what the sticker said I’d get). Quite pleased! I know it’s fun in and out of city driving. It’s proved to be quite a good highway car, too.

On the siriusxm topic, don't pay them for time used that you did not ask for. When I finally did away with satellite, they tried to get me to pay. I simply wrote an email stating it is their problem if they didn't turn off the service when my subscription expired and I will not be paying 1 cent. They went away after that.

I heard that $30 for 6 month offer numerous times over their promo channel 1 (the only one that currently works) while I was on hold with them twice over the weekend trying to get them to sort things out.

I cannot understand how they justify their crummy business practices. You'd think that a discretionary service like theirs would be something they would want people to have and thus make it easy for buyers to say yes to, rather than constantly trying to P.O. their potential customers.

    Here's one for you:

    https://www.barrett-jackson.com/Events/Event/Details/1960-CHEVROLET-IMPALA-BUBBLE-TOP-194011

The story here is interesting. The guy who had this car built was a former municipal and provincial politician. I never thought he was the sharpest knife in the drawer but he must have done something right as he got re-elected numerous times and served in the provincial Cabinet. He was always into old cars and after he got defeated and left politics he had this one built. He told me he got a bit carried away and was into it for a lot of money, probably more than he initially figured.

Last year he decided to take it to the B-J auction in Connecticut to recoup some of his money. Apparently (I wasn't watching) it got into a bidding war and ended up selling for $110K USD, which was like winning the jackpot for him. One thing I did not know was that the cars they sell needed to be registered in the USA (which seems very odd to me but that's what he told me) so he had to jump through a bunch of hoops to get it registered in a US state prior to the auction. The result was worth it to him in the end.

The Mrs. and I were on a Sunday drive yesterday and someone has about ten motorcycles out in their driveway for sale.

"What? Is that what I think it is? It was a medium blue '72-era Honda 70. I had a gold and black one!"

The Mrs. was like, yeah, so what?

"Look at it. I wonder what they want for it?"

She goes, "uhh, you don't want one of those....do you?"

The guy's sign says credit cards accepted! Except that we just moved here from Missouri and we have the U-Haul on the charge card until I can get reimbursed from the hospital. That's on the list of things ta do today, turn in receipts from the trip.

The funny thing is is I think I could fit on that Honda 70 and still ride it. What a great minibike, all 70cc of it.

    Drool over this one.....

That's the one -- thanks! It's the first one I've seen in decades.

Michaell - is Denver cold yet?

Define cold - it's been in the 50's the last few days. Cloudy and rainy.

But, up at the Continental Divide, there has been snow falling.

Just the beginning of fall. 60's most of this week, back into the 70's by the weekend.

OF....Boy do I like those pics of the car show. Some I recognize, some I don’t (my membership might be revoked for not having the minimum required knowledge moving forward).

Shifty......I had heard on one of the Auctions TV programs (Meacum?) that the “old” Chrysler 300s continuously bring more money than they had sold for previously. PRetty amazing stat.

One of them was bid at $15k and another drew$57k. Not sure if they met reserve and actually sold. The auction catalog listed high and low value estimates and most didn't garner low end. I think a lot of horse trading goes on after the auction. I even saw one of the trucks on CL this morning so I know that didn't sell.

There was even some comedy when an early 60s T bird with areally nice paint job started bleeding coolant all over the stage in a cloud. Bet that seller was miffed at the timing.

Speaking of Mecam, I think they were running this thing because I saw one of the audience fluffers from TV running around screaming out bids.

    Here's some more candy.

    And one for Fintail

Weather's gonna turn, boys. Weather's gonna turn. Brings thoughts of Subarus. They are very popular for War-shing-tonians here in Chelan and Doulas Counties.

I'm getting a car insurance quote later today.

Yeah, I watched the Broncos get beat by the Bills in Western NY yesterday, then the NASCAR race in NH. Both mentioned the unseasonably warm weather.

Usually I never want summer to end but our last crop of the season is an ornamental kale that needs low 30s at night to color up. Too hot.
