iluv, you may want to sit down and have a rational discussion with Mrs. iluv, pointing out that your high mileage Soul will have to go sooner or later, etc. etc. Do this calmly without emotion, and maybe she will be surprisingly receptive. Good luck.

Happy Thanksgiving to all!
Man, your advice is resonating with me. Certainly it would be a lot more respectable to talk to her directly about it - not just take off on a covert Steven Seagal mission in the middle of the eastern Washington night. She has a weird instant stress tinge when it comes to her husband buying new cars. I'm 60 days in to my 90-day probationary period at work. I have had other tech's tell me I'm doing well. Managers won't tell you you're doing well - they'd rather goad you on to better performance levels by playing it cool. But I've done this for 4 1/2 years and I've got their system down now. If I were ta wager on my future there, I'd say it's a go - percentage wager - 99%. Now, if I didn't make it at Confluence Health and lost my job, guess what? I still have bills. I'm not retiring yet - I will go full time Medical for at least 4 more years. I owe 3 years of payments still on my Kia Soul. So, long story short, my argument to her is as yours is, carnaught. Our Kia Soul is aging. It's at 93,311 miles and going up fast. My commute is 68 miles each way daily, though I only work 3 nights a week for 13 hours each night.
To me this is a no-brainer to go score my Chromium 2017 Toyota Yaris iA. Clear and clean as a bell. To her, I'm tellin' ya, I can't have a rational discussion with her about it, sadly.
The only car I ever bought without telling my wife was the 1975 2002; I got away with it because she drove it and liked it as well.
I think most wives would rather have hubby chasing cars than other women.
Exactly. When I bought my Triumph some folks asked if my wife was upset that I bought a motorcycle- I told them that she said that she preferred that my mid-life crisis involve something with two wheels as opposed to two legs...

Bingo! Now you have a friend in the car business. Not the Shane Company. roadburner and carnaught! Who else is in? We're kind of a Car Man's Country Club on here. We all love cars or we wouldn't be here. Go ahead and score yah or nah on this one, friends in the car business. Don't hold back. If you think I'm being a horse's hindquarters about this, please tell me. I am soliciting your opinions. All of you. stick, Michaell, driver - all of you. I am going to tally them up.
Should I stay or should I go? Not divorce, sillies. Should I stay home tomorrow or go to Tacoma and buy my Yaris iA? She would get over this after I come tooling home in my '17 Chromium Toyota Yaris iA 6-speed. I'm talking about now - on Thanksgiving. The dealership is closed today. But they'll be open tomorrow. They'll have had 4 cups of Starbuck's by the time iluv gets there and they'll be ready ta deal.

I'd suggest a spreadsheet showing the future depreciation in "real" trade-in value in the Soul and projected maintenance expenses by holding it another year or 2 years or 3 years along with the benefits of getting out from underwater on its loan. I assume there are some things that go wrong with a Soul with higher mileage along with tire replacement, brakes, etc..
On another sheet show the costs of the replacement vehicle in realistic terms of higher loan costs and minimal maintenance expense for a few years balanced against the real depreciation hit on it as 2 or 3 more years go by.
I'd suggest discussing a one-price, one-time offer if she agrees like GG does. That eliminates the schmoozing by salesmen to confuse the numbers and wear down the resistance with the customer ending up spending more than they intended.
This is the part of the fine print which is really questionable though; Price excludes dealer fee of $899, tax, tag, title, and electronic filing fee; as well as, dealer installed options which is the $1,895 Vehicle Protection Plan (includes: Lifetime Window Tint, Lifetime Car Washes, Nitrogen Filled Tires, Custom Pinstriping and Door Edge Guards)

She'd choke on her coffee if I did a spreadsheet, imad! It'd freak her out. This is my party and it freaks me out! The fact is, I think it's time ta trade. My first car was a '65 Ford Mustang. I loved that car, but it may have had 325,000 miles on it by the time I bought it in October of 1978. I was constantly repairing that car. I don't have ta live like that anymore. As our rockin' departed friend Tom Petty says in his hit 'Refugee' from 1979, "Yeah, ya don't - have - ta live like a Refugee...don't have ta live like a Refugee. No, baby we ain't the first, I'm sure a lot of lovers..." and on and on it goes. I bought that cassette and played it so many times I do think it stuck in the player.
But I don't have time ta put my Kia Soul in the shop and rent a car, etc. I would rather buy a new car and drive it and enjoy it.

I will have ta go rogue.
Look, I am not privy to your situation so take this for what it is worth.
Your excitement over buying a car (not just the Yaris, since 2 weeks ago you were equally hot for a Subaru) seems to be somewhat over the top. If you didn't share all of that discussion with her as you did with us here, then her reaction is totally understandable. Nobody like big surprises. You are still on probation, you just made a major move. There is still lots of uncertainty. Maybe once you go off probation she will be more amendable.
iluv, you may want to sit down and have a rational discussion with Mrs. iluv, pointing out that your high mileage Soul will have to go sooner or later, etc. etc. Do this calmly without emotion, and maybe she will be surprisingly receptive. Good luck.

Well said carnaught. A rational discussion is hard to beat. I am not crazy about the fact you are underwater on the Soul iluv....but, you have a job that does require you to be there at certain times, it is a bit of a drive, and a reliable car is a must. You can wait and hope the Soul doesn't breakdown, or you can try to plan ahead in a positive way.
I have been in your situation a few times in my life...precarious job, not much money, questionable car etc. The car was a priority to me because I would lose all the rest anyway if I was always late for work...or couldn't get there.
Not saying one or the other...just playing devils advocate!
I think it is only a decision you can make....along with Mrs iluv. The probationary period is a big question mark too. Not doubting your ability, just the way things are in the workplace these days.
My answer would be nay at this time, yay if you get through probation and you have convinced Mrs iluv. I think there will be similar deals available in the new year. I would love you to get your new car, but, it is better to be cautious at this time. Sorry.....
I would be "nay" because you are in a job where you have no status, despite your coworkers' verbal evaluations. After another 30 days and you achieve one step in job security, I see it being more feasible. Terrible things happen in the probationary periods of employment and even after that period.
The Soul has mileage and may require some work for maintenance to help you get to a point where you're not underwater on it. It's gotta be cheaper to keep 'her.
Only every time I looked at the graphics and whenever I stepped on the gas and remember the seller lied about it having 8 cylinders. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Shifty Sez: I would hit it at about $22,5K max. They made about 11,000 of these and most are still around, so there's no rush to find one. They are for sale all over the place. Buyer's market, definitely.
I'm still amazed Chrysler even built this thing. I'm more amazed that they went through all that trouble and forgot to put a V-8 in it, or an optional 5 speed. This kind of car goes into the "toy" department.
Don't forget ta vote yay or nay! driver - is yours a yay then? imad - yours is a yay? ab348- is yours a nay or yay?
So far the vote is 2-0 to go get it. It is a weighty decision, yep.
Iluv - Remember the term “COOLING OFF PERIOD” which was associated with unions and corporate management whenever there was an impasse? I believe there is a federal law that requires the Cooling Off Period if a strike would affect the national interest (safety, national security, etc.).
IMHO, I strongly urge you to enter into a “Cooling Off Period” as regards a new car and any discussions about getting a car with the Mrs. Try to not even post about getting a new car during the “Cooling Off Period!” I further suggest that two weeks would be a sustainable time period.
This suggestion, if implemented, would ease tensions at many levels. You are in a frame of mind that I have been in dozens of times in my lifetime and I’ve ended up in big trouble - financially as well as many hot arguments with my wife. You are now posting here on this forum requesting “yea or nay” votes from us to help you make a decision about getting a new car instead of making that decision with your partner in life.
At the end of the two week period, readdress purchasing a car with your wife over a nice candlelight dinner and listen carefully to her points of view and her rationale. Then present your point of view in a “luving” manner. The two of you should make this decision together, calmly and objectively.
I offer this approach as a caring and concerned friend. Good luck!
P.S. My vote is “NO” for now. Check back with me in two weeks so I can advise you on this car purchase after my own “Cooling Off Period!”
I went to my doctor appointment in Wenatchee and the Mrs. came along and the Pomeranian and Chow. It was the first visit with this doc. Seems like a good family doc, he grew up in Bellevue. We went to Dusty's for a good cheeseburger meal and then it was time to go to the Tri-Cities to test drive my 2017 Toyota Yaris iA.
A fit was thrown the size of Mt.Rainier. No iA for iluv. I'm done looking. The 2011 Kia Soul 5-speed and I are just meant ta be together. For a long, long, long, long time.
I'm not surprised by the outcome of this saga.
I don't think a major purchasing decision should be made by only one party.
How would you feel if the Mrs. came home and "told" you she's found the perfect house for you to buy?
Nothing wrong with the Soul, at this point. Maybe, when things settle down in the spring with the job and the housing situation, you can revisit the subject.
Yep, I can hear it now. "WHAT? Have you lost your ever loving mind? Our Kia is just like new, still has 3 years left on that 10 year warranty, AND you just bought new tires" !
tjc78 - I guess I just lucked out. I'm glad your situation works for you. It's just really frustrating when you love ta drive like I do. This is my car. I watched several more YouTube reviews of it and reviewers seem ta agree that the Yaris iA is a great bargain, a lot of fun to drive and thrifty on gas.
What makes it all the more of a good idea is the designer made the car really light. 2,385 lbs. And yes, partly because of that, it handles therefore very well. Nice ta know my wife has chosen the very car I want as the ticking time bomb that will break up our marriage if I go buy it. Settling thought. Don't get me wrong. The 2011 Kia Soul is a pretty good product. It's just not the right product for me.
Happy hunting, everyone!
Was the trip to the Dr. the first time she learned anything about the car and your plans?
I posted this over on the CCBA topic- I thought some here might find it interesting- I rented a Charger R/T to drive to NC to visit our son... So, how do I like the Charger R/T? Quite a bit, actually. It's a lot bigger than I prefer but it has a nice ride and decent handling. The base 5.7 Hemi cranks out 0-60 times in the low five second range and the 1/4 mile in the high thirteens; adequate I guess, but I'd definitely have to move up to an SRT if I was buying one. The V8 sounds glorious at full throttle; that alone makes the Hemi mandatory for this car
The ZF 8HP is flawless as always. In mostly interstate driving at over 70 mph it averaged 28 mpg, which is outstanding for a car that weighs over two tons. The Multi-Displacement System kicked in on level stretches and was mostly transparent- the fuel economy display would also indicate when the MDS was functioning.
Speaking of displays, I liked the flexibility to display water, oil, and transmission temperatures- not to mention oil pressure and voltage. I don't like touchscreens, but at least the Uconnect display has redundant volume and tuning knobs- ditto for the HVAC system. The steering wheel mounted controls also work well. The Alpine speaker system also sounded nice, and I could easily live with it.
The seats were comfortable; the lumbar adjustment and heating improved them still more. Needless to say, the cabin is roomy and the trunk is cavernous.
Bottom line: If I was buying a large four door car a Charger SRT-or Hellcat-would be at the top of my list(a properly equipped 440i Gran Coupe nails down the smaller four door spot). RWD and a honking V8 trumps everything.

shifty, as a former Scion xA owner, would you go rogue at 4:30 in the morning and drive from Lake Chelan to Tacoma and trade a 2011 Kia Soul with 93,311 miles for a new 2017 Toyota Yaris iA? 0 % financing for 60 months and I'd put $500 down.

I have to vote "hold" too. The Soul has life left in it, and if she who must be please must be pleased, then she must be pleased
This reminds me of a few episodes my dad had when I was a kid, getting worked up about some random car, but my mom would nix it every time. Looking back on it, she was a voice of reason (his choices were things like a (then new) AMC Eagle, AWD Colt Vista, loaded up Omni to replace a Horizon he had previously). I also remember encouraging him, too - getting him interested in the then-new Mk II Jetta or a not too old Caddy or Lincoln to have something fancy for the price of a normal car. "No" was the reply to all.
But then he figured something out - cheap "vintage" cars (by now it was the 90s, these cars were old - from the 60s, but could still be found for little money). So he ended up bring home a few old Fords, and financial arguments against them were hard to come by. Maybe you need to seek out the old Datsun 411 or intermediate 62 Mopar that you like so much. Or at the very least, gently and logically warm her up to the idea of a new car (say the Soul is getting tired, extol the virtues of 0% and year end deals, tell her they don't exist on the used market, etc) and let her know before you are going to take a test drive - never just dump the news on her, you will never win

I suggest patience. Any time I tell my wife about an idea I have, her initial reaction is an automatic "NO". That's her job. However, it is not unusual that some time later she will have the same idea and think it is wonderful. You have just now taken that first step. Let the idea simmer for a while so she can get used to it and see what happens.
I appreciate all of the input on my "poll" if you will. I understand your points and I think you've given me a lot of good insight. But I must barf it all up.
It's 8-2. I have lost another one. Ya know my miles are racking up daily on that Soul. Right?
One more thought iluv. Why not put the difference in cost between what you are paying out on the Kia and what you will be paying out on the Yaris...that money could go a long ways to reducing your payments or help to pay off the Soul. If you want to show real discipline you could say, pay off the Soul and then reward yourself with a new Yaris.

That's what's going to happen here, naturally. I won't trade in tomorrow, I will continue racking up miles causing my 2011 Kia Soul's trade-in value to fall like a rock off an interstate bridge. But the payoff amount I owe is solid. Solid as a rock. They've really got us between a rock and a hard place if we like to experience a new rig every several years. Unless we're rich people that can just pay for their cars in cash.
OTOH - the 2017 Toyota Yaris iA is brand new with likely under 50 miles of test driving under it's hood. Trading in for it tomorrow would unload the Soul. It would give me a new car. And this particular car is a Toyota. It's by far not the most desirable Toyota on their lot. The Mrs. and I just saw a Toyota commercial advertising 2018 models. Toyota was careful not to even show people the Yaris iA on that commercial.
Crikey! I just clicked the little finance button on the Larson Toyota of Tacoma website under the new silver 2017 Yaris iA I'm looking at buying for $14,634. Toyota is offering 0% financing for 24, 36, 48, 60 and 72 months. There is no previous ownership requirement and this is on approved credit, of course. My Tri-Cities Toyota salesman already told me after reviewing my credit application that everything looked good with my financing.
I didn't know Toyota was offering 0% financing, though it makes sense on 2017 models they're trying ta clear. Coolio topped off with an Iglasius, gentlemen!
I'm one of those types that you can't just pull the rug out from under and expect them to be happy about it. What it does is make me even more determined to do what I want to do. That's what it does. And I can thank my Dad for that. He was a stubborn Norwegian and he raised a stubborn Norwegian.
Just check the details because sometimes it's an either/or thing where you get the financing or a price discount but not both.

iluv, good points have been made for each side. Being fiscally conservative, and not living beyond my means, I understand the nays quite well. That said, I feel that the added safety and confidence, however, driving a new car compared to a miled-up one, cannot be over estimated either.
Your decision, but don’t let it destroy or compromise your marriage.
Since blindsiding her didn’t work too well recently, I’d think twice about trying it again. Since you just got snow tires on the Soul, she could reasonably conclude you decided to stick with it for this winter — until after your probationary period and after you move. BTW the Soul would come in handy during a move. It’s hard to be patient, but maybe this really is the time to cool off a bit.
I know what you mean about the Soul’s weight, and to me the rental I had once felt a bit top heavy in windy weather. It makes sense you don’t enjoy it on a long commute. However, you mentioned that you might not be in the exact place for more than a year. You might wind up having a shorter commute. While you’re waiting you can paymdown the debt on the Soul so you aren’t so upside down.
I say nay unless you can get even begrudging agreement from your wife. Even "you might as well since you always do what you want anyway" like my wife said about buying the Eclipse would give me the green light.
But then again, my wife is a saint.

I vote to "stick" with your Soul. If you are going to make a punch, then wait until you a locked & loaded. Move up the automotive food chain to something with some more balls than a Scion Xa or Yaris.
2001 Prelude Type SH, 2022 Highlander XLE AWD, 2025 Camry SE AWD
I checked online and I can put together a fully optioned(sans hole in the roof) Daytona 392 for a MSRP of around $45k. Not bad for 485 hp...
I wonder what the insurance premium on a car like that would be? THE DODGE CHALLENGER SRT® DEMON HAS A SUPERCHARGED 6.2L HEMI® SRT DEMON V8 ENGINE 860 hp.
I wonder what the insurance on that would be. Getting insurance on a car like that might be difficult - it’s designed and built for one thing - death-defying speed!

oldfarmer50 -you're voting twice, man. I already tabulated your vote. You're part of the 8-2 count. Aren't you? I got your vote early, IIRC, you voted yes to buy the iA.

9-2 against and counting. Apparently shifty doesn't want to remember his 2005 Scion xA this morning...or...something. I don't have his vote. Oh wait a minute! He already gave me his take on the Scion xA. He absolutely loved the thing - reliable, fun to drive, and ...gutless on accelerations. Yeah- yeah. 0-60 times for the 2017 Toyota Yaris iA are 9.5 seconds or something similar to that. So I'd be in the same boat.
Only it will be a lot more fun to mow through the gears myself. Sticks are always better. Better. Better. Da best. Like Chicago. Da best!
As to the continuing decrease in value of the Soul, I'd think you're losing less and less each day, both due to mileage and due to fairly rapid increase on the odometer. I'd think keep putting repair into it as long as you can rent or borrow a car to drive from the dealer during any repairs.
I thought the Asian cars were relatively repair free--or at least that's the approach some have taken toward the US brands. However almost a year ago I sat in the waiting room at my Chevy store talking to a guy waiting for his Cobalt with 325,000 approx miles on it. He had a long commute but just kept doing maintenance. Now to satisfy those who say US brands weren't no good, he did have a new engine put in it. Cheaper than trading and continuing to drive. I thought he was going to tell me the transmission had been replaced, but something had gone wrong with the engine and I'm not sure it was a surprise failure. Maybe he drove it overheated or something. So there should be miles at relatively low per mile cost as the value of the Soul approaches a smaller amount asymptotically.
The warranty on powertrain on the Kia does concern me. If there's no powertrain warranty, that's a little different. BUT I'd fully support funding a pay-off-the-underwater-loan fund.
My vote, communicate, lay out on paper potential values now and two years or so in the future as examples and communicte. Be transparent.
The only thing that could make your situation better would be if you were a two car family so that you had something to drive if the Soul needed repair. I don't worry much about increasing mileage on it as to resale value.

I have a buddy in upstate Michigan whose Mom had a 2002 Kia Spectra with over 600,000 miles on it. I kid you not - I saw the speedometer! And these are salt-a-the-earth-type of people. She didnt't artificially inflate the speedometer on her Kia. Kia builds good engines. I've had one part fail in 3 Kia's so far. Make that two. The ignition switch in our Soul went out upon arrival on the tow dolly behind the U-Haul truck. Had it towed ta Wenatchee Kia and the part+labor totaled $264.
The other Kia vehicle of mine that experienced a part failure was our 2001 Kia Sportage 4X4. While traveling to clinicals in college in Missouri one morning - this would've been in the spring of 2004 - my accelerator pedal went right to the floorboard on a podunk Missouri highway. I pulled the small SUV over to the side of the road. It was just me and the cows out there - oakey like a lot of Missouri. Pleasant morning, though, moist with morning dew on the agriculture.
I started walking back to the nearest town in my scrubs and notebook and packed lunch. A guy in a 70's station wagon pulled up - he looked really nerdy - he said this.
"Ya need a lift?" "Yep". "Hop in." So I hopped in and he took me about a mile down the road to a service center. The verdict? A blown alternator. IIRC that repair was something more around $300.
That's the extent of my 3 Kia's mechanical failures. The alternator was not covered by my Kia's 10 year 100,000 mile Warranty.
I am more concerned about the increasing mileage driving down my Kia's value than the car holding up mechanically. That has to be thought out carefully. I could just fully trust in my Kia to hold up and drive it "until it's wheels fall off" or trade it in while it still has some dealer trade value.
My choice is to trade it in. But then again, a train wreck can be sort of entertaining ta watch, huh?

I vote to "stick" with your Soul. If you are going to make a punch, then wait until you a locked & loaded. Move up the automotive food chain to something with some more balls than a Scion Xa or Yaris.

Da best!

I will have ta go rogue.

I'd suggest discussing a one-price, one-time offer if she agrees like GG does. That eliminates the schmoozing by salesmen to confuse the numbers and wear down the resistance with the customer ending up spending more than they intended.

I cannot imagine "going rogue" will end well.

Did not realize you were still in your probationary period at work.
I'd wait 30 days, get through probation, then look to make an absolutely killer deal between Christmas and New Years - if Mrs. ILuv is on board.
A couple of points to note.
First, the Soul was bought used, IIRC, so not sure that the 10 year warranty is still in effect.
Second, a lot of these fantastic deals that we're being told about are on end of the year models. When the 2017s are gone, so might the great deals.
Unless they start discounting the 2018's the same amount.

Your decision, but don’t let it destroy or compromise your marriage.

2014 Malibu 2LT, 2015 Cruze 2LT,
I have a buddy in upstate Michigan whose Mom had a 2002 Kia Spectra with over 600,000 miles on it.
"Ya need a lift?"
"Yep".
