I had a '68 Olds 2 dr. Delta 88 Custom that was yellow with a black vinyl top. It doesn't sound like a good looking car but it was. It had the Olds Rocket 88, 455 cid V8 with black vinyl bucket seats that were real bun warmers in the Summer months and just the reverse in the Winter. Back in those days we knew how to rough-it. But, it had get this...the Wonder Bar AM/FM radio, that was not roughing-it. Lots of passengers liked playing with that thing.

Back in the '60s that shade of yellow (usually a subdued pastel tone) was quite popular and in the later part of the decade it was often paired with a vinyl top, which back then usually was only available in either black or white. Your car was a nice combination though I would have preferred a lighter interior. I have to think bucket seats were uncommon for a Delta back then. Did it have a center console? A fellow I knew (recently deceased) had a '68 Delta Custom here that he took to shows, metallic blue with a white interior. Nice body design on those.

BTW, Olds called that paint color "Saffron".

I thihnk trades are done different ways. Often a trade, but, sometimes just a take it off our hands, depends on the situation....that is my understanding. I have heard of some dealers who just won't trade...they know someone wants that car and they don't want it to go to a competitor. Every deal is probably different....from what I have observed.

In my town we have 2 GM dealers owned by the 2 large dealership groups and they will not trade with each other. I guess the thinking is that if you want something the other outfit has in stock, you go there to buy it. Either that or they just don't like each other.
There are BMW dealers we will trade with and others that we won't. We have actually had a dealer send us a new car that had undisclosed(and poorly repaired) cosmetic damage.
Try explaining that to a customer who has been eagerly waiting for the delivery...

Ok here's a trivia stumper. In in last year of production how many of the 2004 Olds Aleros produced were sold to rental agencies and what trim level?

I've been told it was 100% but there were 4 trim levels listed for 2004 so I'm doubtful. I have an aquaintence who is considering a GL2 trim and I want to warn him if it was a fleet beater.

Why be afraid of an ex rental? We've owned two ex Avis cars in the past and they were both just fine!
I feel about ex rentals like you feel about vinyl roofs.

I used to rent a lot of cars and I never once abused one and I suspect the vast majority of people don't either.

As far as vinyl roofs there are some cars from the sixties that actually look good with a vinyl top. I had a beautiful yellow 1965 Buick Riviera that had a black vinyl roof. It was one sharp looker that got constant compliments. I saw the identical car without the top that just didn't look right. What I despise is these thick padded aftermarket vinyl tops that people stick on modern cars when this was never an option.

Same applies to the chrome thick wheel lip mouldings, gold kits and wide white walls.

Nor am I a fan of old cars that people throw continental kits and fender skirts on!

But, as they say in the car business..." There's a "butt" for every seat!"
Here's one that'll give you nightmares.

    Ugh.....I wish I hadn't looked!

Our 74 Charger with a white vinyl roof over Aztec gold body was the most beautiful car I've ever driven. 318 motor wasn't a barn burner but it could get 20 mpg if you drove mainly down hill. I installed a 4 speaker 8 track which was pretty fancy for the time.
Yes, that Charger was a good example of a car that looked great with a vinyl top!

Some cars especially '65 Impalas would get rust underneath them in by the rear windows. that wasn't such a good thing!

I can understand them being overly cautious with taking another 2017 into their inventory at this point.

I thought that when dealers get a car from another dealer, they usually trade something in their own inventory to the other store. So here, I'd guess they would offer one of the '17s out of their own inventory that the other store felt the other store could easily sell. Your store has someone drive the local car to the other dealer, trade invoice sheets, and drive back the car you are wanting to look at for purchase.

But Iluv's store would be trading for a stick shift which he says is a tough sell. No dealer would want to get stuck with it if the deal fell through. Also there may be difference in the invoices which would require out of pocket costs. Also they have to pay the swap driver.

Oh, I missed the part of it being a stick. For sure, no dealer would want to take a chance, do the trade and have the buyer flake out. They would be stuck with a undesirable piece of inventory with miles on it, the paperwork hassle and having to pay the driver. Not worth the risk!

I luv, is the total deposit credited to you? You mentioned getting $500 back if you buy. Maybe I misunderstood.

Agreed though that if not 100% refundable, don’t give them money until you know for sure trade quote.

I'd have ta ask my salesman about that. I would think the whole $1,000 would be credited but he told me that I'd get half back when I take delivery of the red one. That means I'm paying the dealer $500 just ta go get me my red '17 Toyota Yaris iA. That has me seeing...black. And my wife is having a cow over this, things are quite tense in our rental lodge. :@

Nearly had a heart attrack just now.

Goaded by you guys for not driving the Mustang enough my son and I went to the store in it this morning. As usual I parked far out in the lot to avoid dings. When we came out no cars were nearby but as my son goes to get in he points out a large white paint streak on his side. Looked just like the curved edge of a car door that extended almost from the door handle to the rocker.

I was livid. It was almost as if some Mustang hater had pulled along side and slammed his door into me before driving off. Images of grisly homocide danced in my head as I drove home.

Fortunately I had used a super slippery silicone wax this summer and the paint came off with some Dawn and a microfiber towel. I got lucky but it makes me wonder what kind of psychopaths are running around loose these days.

Close call oldfarmer but I have seen them....they push their doors open and have no regard for the car parked next to them. Some people have zero respect for other peoples property.

This morning I got a space next to a handicap space that I thought for sure wouldn't be used...there were closer ones. Just as I am walking across that spot with our buggy to reach the trunk of our car - not parked like the red C 250 above - a big Nissan SUV pulls into the handicap spot. Two people about half my age who can walk as well as if not better than me, hop down to do their shopping! One reason they probably like the handicap spot is they have extra room to fling their doors open!

My favorite in that regard happened about a year ago at the grocery store I shop at most often.

In addition to the required "handicap" spaces, this store also has "Mommy" spaces, purportedly for women with small children in tow. Now most often when I see people using them they do not have kids, but whatever.

On this occasion I observed a jacked-up mega 4x4 pickup pull into the mommy space. Both front doors open and out get two beefy-looking women in their 50s. They were hefty and looked like they could have been WWE performers. Both were wearing black leather jackets and both had cigarettes hanging off their lips. Any kids they may have had were decades in the past.

I would have said something but I was afraid they'd beat me to a pulp. ;)

Technically, they may still be Mommies......just the kids are probably 40 years old.

Talk about mommy spaces and grocery stores. A few days ago I went shopping, and I had 4 items. I got in line behind one lady with about 10 items...one being about a 25 pound butterball turkey. She was quite young probably early 20s and she had two kids with her...about 3 or 4 years old. They added up everything but she asked for a discount on the butterball because the packaging was torn. The cashier had to run and find the manager...which wasn't easy. The young mother kindly said to me, sorry about this, and I said it is OK, I am not in a rush (but I sure didn't need this). Finally the manager came over and gave her the $2 discount. If I realized sooner what was going on I would have given the young lady $2 just to get out!

I get into my car and she is loading her groceries into a brand new....gleaming black, Cadillac CTS :'(

I bet I am not the only one who has seen someone open the driver door a few inches to get some leverage, and then kicking it open the rest of the way. All without even looking if a car is parked beside them.

Did they have a placard or plate? Probably took grandma's car so they didn't have to walk 20 extra steps to get into the gym.

I'm all for special parking for thise who need it but sometimes it goes too far and become some sort of political statement. The local supermarket has a special spot for service connected disabled drivers which seemed really nice until I thought that anyone who is disabled could use the regular handicapped spots. And what happens if some old woman in a wheelchair who didn't serve parks there because all the other spots are filled? Do they roll her off to jail?

A mommy spot sounds pretty sexist to me. Although as a daddy I would grab my kids one under each arm and carry them in the store if they wouldn't listen.

Yes, my '68 Olds Delta 88 Custom had a console. I remember the fake walnut wood round plastic knob on the top of the shifter too. It got pretty shiny since I had that car until about 1975. Another design feature that made the color combo look good was the wide wheel well moldings that were painted black in the center. I tried to find a photo of the moldings but none were clear enough to post so I gave up. Maybe someone with more patience can find it if they care to.

Not sure if I said they were the number 1 seller of TVs. Number 1 at amazon usually, number 1 at Walmart, could sell more if they could make them faster. If not #1 they are way up there, for a company few have ever heard of.

I finally arrived here in Ponte Vedra.  It took me about 5 hours to drive 301 miles.  Now, my impressions and details:

Averaged 30.8 mpg doing 70-75 mph in the S450.  That is significantly below the 36 mpg I got on my 740i.

I discovered that when I was in adaptive cruise control with auto steer, if I wanted to change lanes, all I had to do was hold my directional signal and the car changed lanes by itself and then straightened itself out.  I used that frequently once I discovered its capability.

I used the driver’s seat massage most of the time.  It made the trip less taxing on my back.  I did not have that option on the 740i.

Handling and steering were sublime.  Engine performance was aggressively strong in the S450 - more responsive and more powerful than the 740i.    I would expect that in a bi-turbo that delivers 42 more horsepower.

Driver’s seat comfort was better in the S Class than in the 7 series.  Audio quality was about the same - not worse or better.

I found the engine “start-stop” function abrupt in the S450 compared to a less intrusive 7 Series.  Same is true for the 9-speed automatic transmission.  The 7 Series 8 speed is smoother and less obtrusive than the S Class’s 9 speed.  The S Class jerks at times when downshifting which is not the case in the 7 Series.

The ergonomics in the S Class are more luxurious and more impressive than the 7 Series.  I also found that road noise and vibrations in the S Class were were significantly less.

In summary, there are pros and cons in both vehicles - but the S450 is a more luxurious vehicle while the 7 Series is a much sportier vehicle.  If you are in the market for a luxury automobile, you really can’t go wrong with either one.

I must get $3,500 minimum for my 2011 Kia Soul base 5-speed. It's got 93,229 miles on it, it's in good condition. Engine and transmission very strong, I've babied it. Crack in passenger side windshield. Interior is in excellent shape. I should demand $4,500 for it.

I ran your car through Edmunds and came up ith a trade value of $4400 for a zip code near you. Is yours the 2.0L.?

My salesman just texted me to tell me he's been working on a sale. I'm looking for that quote on a trade-in amount for my Kia Soul.

"Yessir! I've been working on a sale," he texted me. I've taken care of a lot of this purchase by text. Tomorrow I'll get there and test-drive the iA. If I love it, we'll go to the paperwork.

I arrived up here in Ponte Vedra a few hours ago. I was not as tired as I usually am after the 301 mile drive. Rained almost the entire trip. Car performed as expected - 30.9 mpg - significantly less fuel economy than I got on the 740i. Much smoother, softer ride but impressive handling. When I was in adaptive cruise control and auto steer, I found out I could change lanes by merely holding the directional signal lever up or down and the car changed lanes and straightened itself out - all autonomously. Nice feature. It would not change lanes if I was coming up on a car too fast or I did not have a sufficient interval behind, in front or to the side. The S450 was more responsive than the 740i - more torque and horsepower was the reason - but at the expense of fuel economy - 5 miles per gallon less than the BMW 740i. The massage seats were a lifesaver for me - it soothed my lumbar, middle and upper back. I did not have that option on the BMW. Going to bed a little early tonight - worn out now. Stay tuned for more comparative analyses of the S450 and the 740i.

Well, my suspicions were spot on; someone else got the appointment. No big deal. I'm already receiving texts and messages asking me to run, but I probably won't as I'd have to quit my current job to campaign effectively.
But I might file to run and not campaign just to throw a handful of gears into the political machine. B)

    Not sure if this has those wide wheel well mouldings...with black in the middle;

And, is this the pale yellow color?

    Thanks for trying.

That pic of the red one is a little better than what I found with the wheel well moldings but still not as clear as I'd like to see it.

That yellow one is the right color but that Olds must not be the Custom model because the moldings on it are pretty skinny.

    I just thought of this:

Another unique thing about my '68 Old was that the speedometer cable was not connected to the tranny like most cars. The cable was driven by the front left wheel bearing grease cap. There was a hole drill through the left front spindle and the speedometer cable ran through that spindle hole.

If somehow you didn't install the left front wheel bearing grease cap properly after doing a wheel bearing grease job (2 wheel bearings), which I always made sure I did when I replaced the front drum brakes, the speedometer cable would not turn. Thereby, the speedometer would not work nor would the odometer record the mileage driven. I never saw that speedometer cable arrangement on any other GM car other than that '68 Olds and I had my share of GM cars through the 70's and 80's. In fact, I never saw that arrangement on any car that I ever worked on back then. Then again maybe I didn't work on enough cars back in that era.

I guess that was one of the Olds experiments that GM did not put into production on other cars. Might have been too easy not to show the real mileage and guys like our poster buddy @oldfarmer50 would have had a fit if they bought that model year Olds and found out later that the previous owner snokered them about the real mileage. :@

I'm beginning to think getting $3,600 will be difficult if the rumors I heard are true.

Has anyone else in hear heard that someone in here has sent a few of @iluvmysephia1's posts to his salesman about how he intends to negotiate on the Scion. If true that is dirty pool. :@ :@ :@

I dunno when they started doing that speedo cable to hub arrangement but I do know it ended with the 1970 models.

They switched up the colors to Graphite. That is awesome! I'd rather have the Graphite color. My salesman asked for an online credit application from me tonight so it'll be all ready for me tomorrow afternoon.

jmonroe - nobody's sent my salesman any of my negotiating details. Have any of you? :p
