It was probably because GM cars aren't balanced properly! :s

Actually, I have seen a small trailer start to sway, it happened in Florida. The guy did a small zig zag move and the trailer starts oscillating from side to side, and it got worse the more he tried to correct it.

Some people drive trailers who should not be doing it....it requires some skill.

Hey Jipster, if you're still looking for a mid-size like the Milan/Fusion, you might look at the Nissan Altima. I've driven a bunch of them and they are nice cars. Peppy with crisp handling. A big improvement over Nissan's smaller vehicles like the Sentra. I like them better than the Maxima.

    https://louisville.craigslist.org/cto/d/2012-nissan-altima/6583009364.html

You were right about one thing, half the CL listings in your area are rebuilds.

And Jmonroe says they are good for picking up hot women.
You are twisting this around quite a bit. I never said that. What I said was that I got a few compliments when I had a 2015 Altima rental as the result of when Mrs. j's Subie was in the shop because a pickup truck whacked the right front fender in a parking lot and took off.

You also missed the point that the rental was Black. I doubt that other colors would get as many compliments. I wonder what recourse Edmunds has with members who have incorrect posts? Maybe they can remove those posts. In your case, your post count would be less than half of what it shows now. :@

    jmonroe
I didn't miss that your rental was black...the car shown was black....just like yours. I didn't mention it, thought it was a given.
Once again you are misinformed, the car that was posted is blue NOT BLACK. Look at the specs if you don't believe me.

    jmonroe
It looks black on my computer screen.

Maybe it’s time to trade that B&W monitor you have for a color flat-screen monitor!  :D

On the Edmunds site it looks dark charcoal....on CL it looks lighter gray or actually bluish gray.

I think it is two different cars!

I found a short review about the accident that dumped the Corvette off a wire trailer here on I75 on Monday morning.

The driver claimed he looked back and the trailer was fishtailing already. I looked at the accident scene for tire marks and there were none still showing. The article said the Covette was not tied down properly. You can see straps in the photo.

I wonder if the winds that day, it was windy, or the wind gusts from the semis pushed the relatively light trailer sideways and started the accident which ended up in a jackknife of the light pickup towing. I think the rig was not set up right and the pickup was too light on rear traction for the job.

The pickup was in the right hand lane of three lanes. There are sound barrier walls close to the highway just before where the accident occurred.

Does anyone know what about the towing setup may have been wrong?

The driver had sold the Corvette to someone and was delivering it to the new owner. LOL.

That's going to be interesting. If money didn't change hands yet, then who owns the car?

Speaking of which, has anyone ever heard of auto insurance that offers replacement value of a new car if yours is totaled?

If money hasn't changed hands and the car is still in the sellers possession then the seller still owns the car.

Yes. Allstate, Liberty Mutual, probably others. Usually it's first year or couple of years from date of first purchase (day in service). There are limitations. When I had Allstate, the agent said it covered both collision and comprehensive with some exception, such as fire and other conditions that could be created by the owner. I joked that if my car was totalled by a fallen tree, then it would have been covered with that replacement rider, but if the tree caused a rupture in the gas tank or electrical short that consumed the car, it would not.

I also heard of rider offering replacement with "same" model one year newer. The issue is of course the features. I remember somebody here (driver was it?) described their fight with insurance on the "equivalent" replacement, as the equipment packages changed (but kept same names) and it created a lot bad feelings.

The rider wasn't that much at Allstate, it was a part of a larger package anyway. Consider the risk vs. the actual payout difference. Only for a year or two, only, a few thousands. How often does that happen, anyway? Liberty Mutual has it standard and they were expensive, when quoting years ago.

BTW, with those you still pay the deductible, but they may take on themselves to buy you that new car. As I said, it may work both ways.

So you've never seen LM commercials tauting this feature?

I have Liberty Mutual and they do offer new car replacement - but only on one year old cars or newer and, yes, it is more expensive which is why I never carried it when I bought my cars.

Since I am leasing this car, I don’t need anything like it since MB leases have gap insurance included in the lease agreement.

Dino is right...I had full replacement value insurance on my 2015 E400. I did have a hassle collecting the full amount, there was a dispute about changes in option packages - it was also a really poor adjuster who didn't seem to care, and had left before it got resolved. The new adjuster got it through quickly and was sorry for the delays I had.

Cost is very inexpensive....it was about $60 when I bought it for the 2015 car, it has gone up to $100 on my new car....but, it is definitely worth it.........I could have been out $20 or $30K

I was thinking about it, cost is lower than you think, because of all the people who pay $60, how many are in the sweet spot to collect.

btw....the waste truck totalled my E400....about $72000, but, I figure he got off lucky, could have been loss of life or limbs involved.

Well let's say you did an outright purchase on a $45,000 car. After say a year or 15 months, you're going to take a $6K--$8K hit on that car.

So a replacement cost policy is definitely worth it, should you suffer a total loss when the car is relatively new.
  • driver100driver100 Member Posts: 32,594
One very nice thing about full replacement insurance to think about.
The insurance company will find it hard to undervalue your car - since they have to replace it the same.
And, I got a few extras on this car because they came in a package...that had the features I had on the 2015 car.

Do you have Sandy soil in your neighborhood? Sand can let radon seep in from the rock below while clay tends to seal it in.

I believe they should replace it with the new model. The fight may be on the equipment level. Another possibility is to give you cash value as it was at the purchase time, whether it's MSRP or "market value" it's probably a matter of negotiation.

What if there is no direct replacement model?
Say you buy a last year Taurus? I think 2019 will be the last year with no replacement.
Maybe the actuaries figure that into how much the rider costs.

Altima's have their good points, but never thought handling or ride(other than a smooth road) was very good.

Not sports car crisp but good. Ride is on par with Fusion, perhaps a bit harsher.

Maybe, but they couldn't know in every case if a model will be brought back the following year. My guess, and it is only a guess, is they would give you a similar car that would have cost the same as your original car was...at the time. For example, replace a $40000 2016 Taurus, with a 2019 Impala that would have been $40000 in 2016.

Just got home from hospital/rehab yesterday. Had septis and pnemonia then gall stones and finally they took the gall bladder out since the white count was through the roof. Am exhausted to say the least so taking a six week vacation, a plan to do nothing at all, work gave me the time off. Am super tired all the time to. Fell in the hospital a few times and also in the house so my wife said enough and called the paramedics. Took my cane away and using a walker 24/7 as of now but need the rest. The world will be just fine until I get back to Hertz.

The first house was on a mesa - pretty solid rock (they had to blast to create basements for the houses that had them).

The second house was on clay - we were pretty close to a major creek in Colorado, and I could never get the grass to grow well.

The new house, I suspect, is on more loose soil, hence the radon issue.

Fell in the hospital a few times and also in the house so my wife said enough and called the paramedics. Took my cane away and using a walker 24/7 as of now but need the rest. The world will be just fine until I get back to Hertz.

So sorry to hear of your struggles but with time you'll be back to your old self. Be Blessed and have a restful day.

@Sandy, good to hear you are on the mend and will be back moving cars for Hertz before @oldfarmer50 decides to move in on your absence.

Ask Mrs. Sandy to let you have your cane back. Might come in handy if she tries to take advantage of you in your weakened condition. Might also scare off @oldfarmer50 if he gets any wise ideas.

Check in now and then to let us know how you are doing.

    Good luck,

What if there is no direct replacement model?
Say you buy a last year Taurus? I think 2019 will be the last year with no replacement.
Maybe the actuaries figure that into how much the rider costs.

Who other than @imidazol97 would be satisfied with a Chevy when they had a Ford? :o

Stop trying to stir up trouble. Hertz has been calling me for months begging me to come work for them. I don't need Sandy's job. I'm having a ball working where I am.

Two of my transporter buddies use canes so I could always steal theirs.
