Saw the comment below in a "Scams of Craigslist" blog. Seems fairly spot on. 90% of the ads in private party sales are from flippers and curbstoners. Out of that number, 50% are rebuilt, 40% are priced way below market value and highly suspicious. Some of the warning signs that I've noticed: having owned the car less than a year, military and going overseas, need bigger car for growing family, little to no information, licence plate blacked out, car is parked and photographed at either a Wal-Mart or out in God's country. I like to see a photograph of a car in someone's driveway..from someone who has owned the car for a couple years and has maintenance records. Wish I'd asked to see the title from the guy I almost bought a Mercury Milan from. Anyone else have any warning signs to add? Still looking for a car for my son.
I’m sure that must be the case. I’ve found that about 90% of cars listed on Craigslist in the “Private Party” section are actually dealers/flippers/curbstoners (look up that word). They probably buy a lot of their “stock” at auctions, but also from people like you, where they can talk you down a few hundred off your already too-low price, then flip it within a few days and pocket the difference. They never register the car in their own name – when they sell it, they tell the buyer that the name on the title (yours) is a friend or relative who is mysteriously not available. Dead giveaways for spotting these ads: 1) Pictures of the rear of the car show that there’s no license plate 2) Generic information like “runs good”, never any specific historical info like “I’ve driven it daily for the last xxx years” 3) No indication of any kind of the history of the car, only present-day observations, always in glowing “salesman-speak” 4) And the biggest dead giveaway of them all – the ever present phrases: “Cold AC”, and “Clean title in-hand” Whenever I see those, I go to the next ad.
If you’re not sure, contact them and ask: “Regarding your car on Craigslist, how long have you owned it? Do you have maintenance/repair records”? If they reply “which car”, or don’t reply at all, then skip that o
Another thing you can do is Google the contact phone number. Frequently it will trace back to a dealer or multiple other ads. There's also a federal site that lists VINs of totaled cars.
I was looking at a local ad for a cheap car that looked pretty decent but the phone traced back to what looked like a motorcycle gang hangout. Probably not a good place to visit with a pocket full of cash.

“...another couple are extremely right wing...she wakes up to the National Anthem on Fox News every morning...”
Is that what determines how right wing an individual is? I would imagine if you did not wake up to the National Anthem on Fox News every morning but watched Fox News for “Special Report” with Bret Baier every night, you would be only slightly right wing!
There is absolutely no way I would bring myself to watch the National Anthem at 6:00 AM every morning on Fox News - but I never miss Bret Baier on “Special Report” at 6:00 PM. What does that say about my politics, driver?
I had enough getting up early for the National Anthem when I was in the service.
Now I get up when I want to, salute the flag in my bedroom, sing Lee Greenwoods "I'm proud to be an American" and bing watch "American Dad".

Wait, that first ad, did I read that right 2.3 million miles on the odometer?
I'm sure that's a typo but even 230k miles would be a no go for me. Usually they leave a zero off the milage in the ads for whatever reason. I've bought two CL cars, both low mileage Florida cars. Both are still on the road, one with another owner.
I look for local phone numbers (an Illinois number like on one i recently saw is a red flag). Has to have plates so you can test drive but covered up in the ad is not a deal breaker unless it turns out to be out of state. An older owner in a suburban area is a plus. Complete records are a double plus. Seller's name on the title is a must (not already filled out on the back).

This is not good either;

I am pretty sure its a typo too.
As for out of state phone numbers this day and age with people having cell phones as primary numbers people will move and just keep their current number.
My niece who moved here over 15 years ago still has her Colorado phone number. Our kids in Florida still use their Chicago area numbers even though they moved out of illinois 5 years ago.
As long as they keep their current carrier they can keep those numbers no matter where they move. Although I am not sure what happens if the move to a different country.

Once again I agree with you.
I did my Navy boot camp in the Summer of 1960 at the San Diego Recruit Center. Not there anymore but it was a huge center that bordered on the Marine Corp boot camp, Camp Pendleton.
I seem to remember being awakened from a sound sleep before 6 AM. Could barely see the flag at that time of the morning but we had no trouble hearing the blaring music. I'm sure if they got us up at say, 10 AM, the flag would have been even more beautiful with the music being the same.
Well, if nothing else we got up on the right side of the fence.

Greetings from the Mountain West, where you see 3 seasons in a single day. Have had thunderstorms the past few days.
Still putting the house together, unpacking boxes, findng improvement projects.
Since moving in, we have made the following changes:
4 new ceiling fans 2 hose reels Ramp for dogs up the stairs to the deck temporary window well covers fence off access to the underside of the deck fence off access to both side yards new curtains on 3 windows install dog gates inside house to restrict access, as needed
Projects involving contractors, in progress:
Permanent window well covers Closet organizers Window coverings New garage door opener - the current one seems quite underpowered and noisy Radon mitigation Duct cleaning Storm / screen door on front door
We still have a number of boxes to unpack - mostly artwork, which takes time to figure out the right placement in the new house. But, progress is being made.
And, I'm losing my dachshunds in the yard, so it's time for me to unbox my new electric mower and trim the grass.
Non-local number would have been a flag 10-15 years ago. Today people no longer switch their cell-only number when they move, as there are no longer long-distance charges from cell to cell and landlines are disappearing. I still have one, don't really remember why...

Whew, sounds like you should have never left the old place. Maybe in one of those unpacked boxes you'll find a key to the old place. If so, at least you won't be charged with breaking and entering, just entering.

Hey Jipster, if you're still looking for a mid-size like the Milan/Fusion, you might look at the Nissan Altima. I've driven a bunch of them and they are nice cars. Peppy with crisp handling. A big improvement over Nissan's smaller vehicles like the Sentra. I like them better than the Maxima.

You were right about one thing, half the CL listings in your area are rebuilds.
And Jmonroe says they are good for picking up hot women.
You are twisting this around quite a bit. I never said that. What I said was that I got a few compliments when I had a 2015 Altima rental as the result of when Mrs. j's Subie was in the shop because a pickup truck whacked the right front fender in a parking lot and took off.
You also missed the point that the rental was Black. I doubt that other colors would get as many compliments. I wonder what recourse Edmunds has with members who have incorrect posts? Maybe they can remove those posts. In your case, your post count would be less than half of what it shows now. :@

"Radon mitigation"@Michaell, did your house test positive for radon, or is this just a protective measure?
It tested positive during the inspection. First house in the three I've owned that did so.
Looks like a number of houses in the development have them in place.
I hope your seller is paying for the mitigation of the issue or gave you an allowance to do so. Anyway, better to know about it and take the appropriate measures.

I found a short review about the accident that dumped the Corvette off a wire trailer here on I75 on Monday morning.
The driver claimed he looked back and the trailer was fishtailing already. I looked at the accident scene for tire marks and there were none still showing. The article said the Covette was not tied down properly. You can see straps in the photo.
I wonder if the winds that day, it was windy, or the wind gusts from the semis pushed the relatively light trailer sideways and started the accident which ended up in a jackknife of the light pickup towing. I think the rig was not set up right and the pickup was too light on rear traction for the job.
The pickup was in the right hand lane of three lanes. There are sound barrier walls close to the highway just before where the accident occurred.
Does anyone know what about the towing setup may have been wrong?
The driver had sold the Corvette to someone and was delivering it to the new owner. LOL.
Many many many nights out spent there, Hems, and Garage Door. Well, and Ginzas early on. So depressing.
Antoon's Pizza was also a late night staple after Peters or Garage Door staple until I got food poisoning and refused to ever eat there again. $5 large pizzas though!
The morning show I listen to had the owner on and he said they had a great run but it was time to close shop and they weren't really interested in having anyone else take over the business.

Now I get up when I want to, salute the flag in my bedroom, sing Lee Greenwoods "I'm proud to be an American" and bing watch "American Dad".

Still putting the house together, unpacking boxes, findng improvement projects.
Since moving in, we have made the following changes:
4 new ceiling fans
2 hose reels
Ramp for dogs up the stairs to the deck
temporary window well covers
fence off access to the underside of the deck
fence off access to both side yards
new curtains on 3 windows
install dog gates inside house to restrict access, as needed
Projects involving contractors, in progress:
Permanent window well covers
Closet organizers
Window coverings
New garage door opener - the current one seems quite underpowered and noisy
Radon mitigation
Duct cleaning
Storm / screen door on front door
We still have a number of boxes to unpack - mostly artwork, which takes time to figure out the right placement in the new house. But, progress is being made.
And, I'm losing my dachshunds in the yard, so it's time for me to unbox my new electric mower and trim the grass.

Looks like a number of houses in the development have them in place.

You were right about one thing, half the CL listings in your area are rebuilds.

You also missed the point that the rental was Black. I doubt that other colors would get as many compliments. I wonder what recourse Edmunds has with members who have incorrect posts? Maybe they can remove those posts. In your case, your post count would be less than half of what it shows now. :@

I hope your seller is paying for the mitigation of the issue or gave you an allowance to do so. Anyway, better to know about it and take the appropriate measures.
You've got a ways to go to catch up!

They will be here tomorrow, as well as the garage door folks.
On a positive note, I got to try out my new electric mower today. Cut that grass right down to size. I can see my dogs legs again when they are in the yard.

LOL.
2014 Malibu 2LT, 2015 Cruze 2LT,
The morning show I listen to had the owner on and he said they had a great run but it was time to close shop and they weren't really interested in having anyone else take over the business.
