I shouldn't have to be subjected to the drivers political views or statements, while riding in a taxi....I still say it is public transportation.
But, I think I will report him for trying to scam $50 for the ride....I won't mention about the flag thing. Showing his political views and then scamming people isn't a good way to make an impression.

btw...it was a Chrysler van and I hate riding in a mini van...but, it was 4:30 a.m. and that was the car the hotel called.

I love Chrysler mini vans. More comfortable than a lot of cars.

This topic is headed nowhere good. I still firmly believe the flag is irrelevant.

But, I'll leave one final thought for you, @driver100. What if he was borrowing/was assigned a cab from someone else who was from the country whose flag you saw? It is completely plausible.

I will say this, Americans are much more prone to flying a flag than Canadians. Very few Canadians fly a flag on our homes......we are just as patriotic, just don't have the urge to have to express our patriotism to others.

If it is someone else's cab, he should still take it down. To me, he is creating a conflict where one should not exist. If my barber wants to fly a flag to express his opinion I can avoid his shop next time....I don't have that chance with a guy taking me to the airport....and I don't want to start anything while he is driving.

If it was his friends cab he should be wise and tolerant enough to take it down, temporarily while he is driving.
Could he fly an ISIL flag?

    @driver100,
You are giving the impression you are very intolerant person.
Maybe he said he was from the Congo because people gave him too much grief.
He could be a good person from a bad country.
Maybe everybody was stiffing him on his tips, so he decided to ask more and let you say 'No'.

I am an extremely tolerant person...that is why I would not foist my values or values on others, especially if i am working with the public, which I have done for most of my life.
If the flag was representative of HIS country, it wouldn't be a big issue, though I think it is wrong - if he came to the US to live that should be his #1 country, and he can keep his own beliefs to himself, or display a much smaller flag.
The flag was from a part of the world where I don't need to know his editorial beliefs.
If everyone is stiffing him on his tips, maybe he should keep his political beliefs to himself - I considered not giving him a tip because of the flag....but, being the nice tolerant person I am I was ready to give him a 20% tip.

Driver, if I got into a cab and saw a big flag inside, I wouldn’t say a word.  Taxi drivers are a strange group of people - but they are exposed to the full gamut of our American Society - do I would just button my lip and tip him big time!!
    !

Exactly! I didn't say anything about the flag....I don't need to get into an argument with a guy taking me to the airport at 4:30 a.m. And, I was going to give him the full tip....I thought just as I wouldn't force my political beliefs on the public I will tip him for the ride irregardless of him forcing me to know his political beliefs.

Got back home about 3:00 PM this afternoon - 7 hours of driving through unbelievable downpours and surface flooding.  The worst was on the Turnpike in North Palm Beach County where I had to pull over for 35 minutes because I could not see where I was going.  3” of rain here this afternoon and more is on the way.  And rainy season hasn’t officially started yet.  But good to be home.

Think of it as a free car wash.

We went to quite a few 4 star restaurants in Seattle.....we had a group of 7 so we couldn't dine the same as Mike does. But, we chose popular moderate priced places near the Marriott.

I don't know how you can give a good or excellent rating to restaurants that say on the menu "baked chips" and then they serve greasy McDonalds like shoestring French fries. And shouldn't a highly rated Irish restaurant have some form of real potato...not McD's FFs. The Irish stew I am told had one morsel of lamb. And, why in this day and age, would a restaurant not offer a few choices for vegetarians and vegans? Absolutely no pride in what this restaurant makes for their customers....bland chicken and only a fair attempt at a salad.

There were many good restaurants but one is a standout. Von's 1000 Spirits at 1225 First Avenue is a gem. It has a magnificent bar which doesn't do me much good....a Bud Lite guy - but, the food was creative, original, beautifully done. We had the spicy chicken bowl which isn't too spicy, just a bit of zip, but, they had all kinds of vegetables that made the whole dish pop. Others loved their food too, including a Salmon pattie and hamburgers.

    1000 Spirits Dinner Menu

Another pet peeve are restaurants that buy frozen premade hamburgers. Check what 1000 Spirits says:
    A FULL SCRATCH KITCHEN.
Von’s is a 100% Sourdough Scratch Kitchen. We believe in sourcing local products and hand crafting full flavor dishes. Our chefs only purchase frigid water wild salmon caught in the Pacific Northwest. Our Hamburgs are hand chopped to prime grade fresh daily. Our bakers produce Seattle Sourdough for our brioche Hamburg buns, sourdough pasta and pizza.

Unfortunately, some of those problems you threw money at don’t go away for long - they have a way of returning with a vengeance - as we have all experienced.  Throwing money at problems merely delays the inevitable - throw more money at an increasingly bigger problem or drown in the consequences.  Truly the epitome of a no win situation.

46 cents per gallon was post-1973 fuel crisis. I remember going to the USA with my parents on summer vacation in the late '60s/early '70s and being amazed at gasoline prices being in the 28 cent a gallon range. A fill-up was seldom more than $5.00.

Marco....I like the way my tennis guys handle it in Florida. There is an unwritten rule.......no talking politics. There is nothing to be gained, only bad feelings can result. You can talk about current events....but, just the facts, like "Did you see what happened in.........today?"

One guy also made a rule.....no talking about medical ailments. If we did that we would talk more than we would play. We do share small bits of information so we know what is going on.....but, when I see old people sitting around trying to outdo each other talking about their medical problems......I want to be somewhere else - I say in a more positive atmosphere.

My last word on this topic...I do want to address this though. First amendment is a great thing, and we have similar laws to protect our freedoms too.

The taxi driver has a business, and his business is not the place to display his personal political views. Yes, he is allowed to do it by law, but, civilized people don't have to force it on others in a public or social setting. It isn't smart to do it, he will offend a good portion of his passengers.......no wonder he has to cheat to get a tip. He would be smarter to take down the controversial flag....and just take people where they want to go.

Thanks. That actually nails down the approximate year that Shell station closed in that small town: 1974.

I looked up a chart of historical gas prices in the United States after your post got me thinking remembering gas pricing in my memory.

So those pumps are priced from 1974. No wonder I couldn't find a Top Tier label on the pumps... :LOL

It's not the topic of politics but how many engage in the discussion. I have had lengthy political discussions with people that don't agree with me that have been totally civil. No insults, ad home attacks or the like, just presenting our points and counterpoints in a professional manner. Everyone walks away in a good mood.

It's just when arguments boil down to "if you don't agree with me there is something wrong with you" is where bad feelings happen.

    Of course, civilized friendly people can have differing views, and realize there is nothing wrong with that. But, I have seen some really bad cases too;

*Two couples had been extremely good friends for about 25 years. One couple bought a new Hyundai Elantra...it is what they liked and what they could afford. The guy from the other couple had worked on the assembly line at GM all his life, and they wouldn't talk to the couple who bought the Elantra.

*Another couple are extremely right wing......she wakes up to the National Anthem on Fox News every morning. Friends were driving by there home one day, the RW couple asked them who they were voting for. Happened to be the Democrat candidate. The first couple said good bye and haven't spoken to them since.

In a case like that it is better if people don't talk politics.

I know what you mean. The dumbest people I know have tried to argue politics and religion with me. When they walk away they know they are wrong but won't admit it. Especially the religion thing because I have gotten that info from the highest power. Only a dope would think they can argue about that.

The second dumbest group are those who think they can argue about cars with me. Some of those folks actually walk away thinking they are right but they are also dopes.

I'm always right and I know it because I got that from a higher power too just a shelf or two down. Mrs. j always tells me, "you're the only person I know who has never been wrong and you're spoiled too". Why would I argue with someone who says that even though I've pretty much perfected my rope-a-dope maneuver?

Well you can't apply quantitative data to most discussions of politics or religion, but you can to cars--so with cars, you CAN have someone who is right and someone who is wrong.

Is that what determines how right wing an individual is?  I would imagine if you did not wake up to the National Anthem on Fox News every morning but watched Fox News for “Special Report” with Bret Baier every night, you would be only slightly right wing!

There is absolutely no way I would bring myself to watch the National Anthem at 6:00 AM every morning on Fox News - but I never miss Bret Baier on “Special Report” at 6:00 PM.  What does that say about my politics, driver?   :DB)

I watch Fox and CNN interchangeably....I know the truth is somewhere in between! ;)

But, I tend not to watch either very much, too much same old same old and it gets too depressing. rather watch local news and find out about local corruption in government, shootings, robberies, car accidents....things that actually affect me around my neighborhood.

Saw the comment below in a "Scams of Craigslist" blog. Seems fairly spot on. 90% of the ads in private party sales are from flippers and curbstoners. Out of that number, 50% are rebuilt, 40% are priced way below market value and highly suspicious. Some of the warning signs that I've noticed: having owned the car less than a year, military and going overseas, need bigger car for growing family, little to no information, licence plate blacked out, car is parked and photographed at either a Wal-Mart or out in God's country. I like to see a photograph of a car in someone's driveway..from someone who has owned the car for a couple years and has maintenance records. Wish I'd asked to see the title from the guy I almost bought a Mercury Milan from. Anyone else have any warning signs to add? Still looking for a car for my son.

    • Robert

I’m sure that must be the case. I’ve found that about 90% of cars listed on Craigslist in the “Private Party” section are actually dealers/flippers/curbstoners (look up that word). They probably buy a lot of their “stock” at auctions, but also from people like you, where they can talk you down a few hundred off your already too-low price, then flip it within a few days and pocket the difference. They never register the car in their own name – when they sell it, they tell the buyer that the name on the title (yours) is a friend or relative who is mysteriously not available. Dead giveaways for spotting these ads:
      1) Pictures of the rear of the car show that there’s no license plate
      2) Generic information like “runs good”, never any specific historical info like “I’ve driven it daily for the last xxx years”
      3) No indication of any kind of the history of the car, only present-day observations, always in glowing “salesman-speak”
      4) And the biggest dead giveaway of them all – the ever present phrases: “Cold AC”, and “Clean title in-hand” Whenever I see those, I go to the next ad.

If you’re not sure, contact them and ask: “Regarding your car on Craigslist, how long have you owned it? Do you have maintenance/repair records”? If they reply “which car”, or don’t reply at all, then skip that o

IQ you stick guy on dogs being the best over people ha ha Ha
