And this I find very interesting. I don't quite see myself owning one, but if a really good friend owned one I could see myself borrowing it to go cruising on a Saturday night.
Speaking of the Nissan Juke, I rather like those. They’re so ugly they’re cute, kind of like a Pug. A few years back, I was kicking tires at a Carmax, trying to see just how many different cars actually had enough head room and b___ room for me. And surprise, surprise, I fit comfortably in a Juke they had sitting there. I would have actually taken that one for a test drive except for the funky smell, really musty.
And on the Nissan Frontier, they suffer from a lack of headroom, which eliminates them from my consideration. I was so uncomfortable trying to sit in one I never even drove it. Same thing for a new Tacoma. The Colorado was much better, just too expensive for what you’re getting. I just cannot see myself paying more (considerably more) for a Colorado than for a Silverado.
YMMV
I'm with you. I was talking around here about the Juke just prior to its release. Sadly, they missed the mark just enough that I lost interest by making it auto only with AWD and priced $2k-$3k too high.
I absolutely hate the Juke. We actually drove a used one. Not only does it look like something out of a cartoon, it was horribly uncomfortable. I couldn’t find a way to get comfortable, either as a driver or a passenger. There are a lot of odd angles that stick out everywhere. Odd for Nissan —- most of their vehicles are styled very nicely. My favorite car of all time was an ‘01 Nissan Maxima. That was one smooth vehicle.
When you guys talk about the Juke, do you mean the one commonly known as the Wart Hog?
I had that same car. Just in yellow, not pink. It was an X. Just a 6 cyl though, not a 401 CI V8. That car would have been scary with that much HP I think. I had a sweet spot for it. should have kept it longer. common theme in those days.
What was the awd AMC sedan that had good road clearance and was way ahead of its time?
Oh you mean the AMC Eagle? It may have been ahead of its time in terms of a marketing concept for an AWD sedan, but in terms of technology, it was old stuff, bent-to-fit to an existing passenger car platform.
But, to be fair, the early Subaru AWDs were clunky things, too.

Yeah, that was it. By ahead of its time, I meant the idea, not the execution.
I'll join in with the exercise = metabolism thought. I seem to have a slow metabolism (compared to my dad, who never exercised and was always fit). When I was young and around sports and activities, I could have all the carbs I want and not look back. However, in college, I had the freshman 15, then the sophomore six, junior jeleven, senior seven. After school, I started work right away in an office setting, and my employer seems to like to feed us. A few years ago I started exercising, and cut some junk out of my diet (not nearly all that I should, but I am not that strong-willed nor looking for austerity). I lost a bit of weight, and I definitely sleep better now too. I jog 3-4 miles a day, 5 days a week. My blood pressure and cholesterol are also good no doubt because of this. Small changes make a big deal.
Not only is 3-4 miles a lot, but 5 days a week is a lot. That takes major discipline and routine.
With a child time is scarce, so if I can get 2 miles in I'm happy.

WA has a 20% sales tax on booze plus a $3.77 per liter volume tax. On the positive sign, sales were privatized a few years ago, so no need to plan purchases around old fashioned state run store hours. Prices are definitely higher since privatization, the price you pay for convenience.
If someone is willing to make a ~3 hour each way drive just to buy drinks, they must be consuming quite a volume
Oregon also has zero sales tax last I remember. A very pleasant thing when visiting. You go to the drive through, and what you see is what you pay. Very nice!

I have found that the least expensive liquor I have ever purchased was in the northern suburbs of Dallas. Florida is also very reasonable - especially in Broward County where I live where the sales tax is only 6%. Palm Beach County is 7% and Miami is 7.5%. This November, Broward County is once again asking us to approve a 1% increase in sales tax for public transportation and infrastructure. It has failed 5 times in the last 10 years and I suspect it will go down to defeat once again. We have one of the lowest sales tax rates in Florida and I would like to keep it that way.
Well at least they listen to the voters where you live. At the beginning of this century the politicians asked for a 1% sales tax in Allegheny County, where I live, to fund a new baseball park for the Pirates AND another one for the Steelers. It was voted down but we got the new parks anyway and of course the additional 1% sales tax. :@ :@

And to think,, I thought only the red-light scamera industry had a lock on usurping the people's vote and power like that! There are many stories of ballot measures being overturned, blocked, impeded, and overruled by bureaucrats that don't like the fact that a vote of the people 9 times out of 10 results in no red-light cameras.

Now this is one I would run away from. Notice how the owner talks about spending $2,500 at the dealer to replace a strut, like this is something to brag about. Not.

When I went for my drive on sunday I passed a '48 or so Plymouth coupe on the expressway by the airport here, carefully-cultivated patina, much later mechanicals under the hood (he was doing 65-70mph) and the most extreme rake I've ever seen. Front end was almost on the pavement while the back end was way up in the air. I guess that stance gave him lots of downforce but it didn't look like it was very safe.
W220 is generally something to keep away from, period. V12 models are especially hilarious. A local indy mechanic told me he refuses to work on them, asking the owners to find another shop - after two of them were abandoned.

Europe is like that too, even with higher taxes (but they get something for their payments). What you see listed is what you pay. It makes shopping easier.

For as long as we've owned houses, we've put two cars in the garage. Now that we have an oversized garage, it's nice to have some extra room for 'stuff', but nothing we don't need.
I think I started it. There are certain cars I don't like, for a variety of reasons. I voiced my opinion on a certain brand/model. I offended when I didn't mean to. Just throwing out my experiences. I'll "zip it" from now on when it comes to those sorts of things.
Sorry!
Well that's a relief. I thought I started it. ;b
+1 I was lying low....thought I started it!
I should have stayed quiet and let you guys take the heat.
Here's an interesting Nissan for you. A 350z with a 6 speed. Sounds nice, except for the part about "third gear is out". (smile)
What the hell does that mean? 3rd gear is out? What, no synchros? Someone lifted 3rd? What? Shifting only to 1st then 2nd then 4th?
I think the seller is trying to soften the fact that the trans has to be dropped and totally rebuilt. May as well do the clutch, too. That's a $3K bill (if you're lucky).
I do like that color, though. I've seen it. It's a much brighter/deeper silver than what is typical on silver cars.
Mike, I think it says something about you that you mention a brand that you just don't like, but you still somehow had 7 of them!
Better that I owned 7 cars I didn’t like rather than marrying 7 wives I didn’t like. 7 BMW’s are cheap compared to 7 ex-wives!
Yeh, with a used BMW you just lose the depreciation, every time you divorce a wife you lose half your possessions.
btw......Someone can criticize Mercedes all they like in my presence, as long as it is true. I think a Mercedes is best for me........if I was looking for a better performing car I would probably choose a BMW, if I was looking for something more subdued, I would choose an Audi. I don't think Mercedes is necessarily the best car for everyone.
And who remembers these? I'm getting a buzz on just thinking about it!
Rode in one of those a few times....not nearly as nice as that one. And, I probably could have walked as fast as it ran. But, it was cool then, and is still cool, now!

I ran some errands in the Club Sport today. It's hard to believe it will be 23 years old in October. With an 8.0 second 0-60 time it isn't anywhere close to fast, but keep the 1.8 liter four above 4,500 rpm and it moves along pretty well. The handling is still phenomenal, largely a function of light weight, RWD, 50/50 weight distribution, and communicative and well weighted steering. Even with a direct top gear the car wants to cruise north of 80 mph- which equals 4,000 rpm. With around 100 more horsepower it would be just about perfect. If I had the time and money I'd take a shot at swapping in a B46 along with a six speed manual. Talk about a sleeper...

You don't need to go fast to get great pleasure out of a car. Some cars are just inherently wonderful to drive.
Shifty, you hit the nail on the head. No matter what the vehicle, there’s a driver out there who would find it a pleasure to drive. It’s all a matter of perspective. I love driving a car equipped with a 5-speed or 6-speed transmission - but that “Love” dissipates with the first traffic jam. Those are the times I love my S450.
I would imagine a RR Ghost II would be a true pleasure to drive, however the pleasure I derive out of driving my S450 is exhilarating - in all driving conditions and on all types of roads.
Speaking of enjoyable driving, I find myself much calmer and harder to irritate when I am in the old car than the new one. Not having a reserve of speed on tap, needing to pay attention to the car, and just the tactile feel of the old car can change an outlook.
After 107 years General Electric is booted from the Dow Jones Industrial Average effective June 26. It will be replaced by Walgreens. GE has been the Dow's worst performing stock for the last 10 years.
Student loan debt has reached $1.5 trillion dollars and climbing.
In Boston more Generation Z's are moving back home after college graduation. Not because they cannot find a job (jobs are plentiful in Boston) but because they cannot afford rent, averaging $2,152, while repaying school loans. For many, buying a new car is out of the question.
Speaking of cars, Cadillac's new Chief Marketing Officer, who held a similar position at McDonalds and introduced the all-day breakfast there is looking for a such a break-through idea for Cadillac in the form of a niche product like Prius did for Toyota. Good luck with that.

Cadillac is adrift; the prior administrations's attempt to make it an American Audi went nowhere and the scramble is on to find another quick fix. They need to go back to Square One and rediscover what makes a Cadillac a CADILLAC. To my mind that means distinctive(not weird) styling, opulent interiors, decent handling, and strong performance. And cars with names- not alphabet soup.

But they did--the ELR. The problem was that they stuck a few luxury items on a Volt and put a $65,000 ++ MSRP on it. Nobody in his right mind would pay that price for an ELR/ Volt.
Caddy had the ELR, fairly cool looking or at least striking in design, but initially overpriced, and that was it - went the way of the Allante or XLR.
The alphanumeric name soup is the product of one trick pony recycled good old boy suit DeNysschen, he pulled the same trick at Infiniti with no proven positive results. Although it may not help Caddy to change naming nomenclature, it probably couldn't hurt.
I keep sayin' that Cadillac will never recover until every person who ever owned one between 1975 and 1999 has died. The reason Buick, for instance, is successful in China is because the Chinese buyer has no knowledge whatsoever of the history of Buick.
Cadillac wants to be Lexus and Mercedes. But it's not. It's Acura and Infiniti.
Seriously, the issue isn't their marketing. I do agree that they need to get back to what a Cadillac should be, instead of chasing 3 and 5 Series.
It should not be a derivative of an Impala, or a Malibu, or a Volt/Bolt. Be unique. Not just tag a few options on a Chevy and call it a Cadillac, like they did with the ELR. Wait....they did that before with the Cimeron.
I can get the same feature set in the Impala with the same drivetrain as I had with the CTS. So, why was the CTS $15K-$20K more?
Put those hot V6 turbo drivetrains in the ATS and CTS. Bring the price down $15K-$20K. Dump the mundane 2.0T. Make Cadillac the luxury muscle car company, like they were.
If not, GM should make Chevies and Buicks, and be done with it.
It's just a different world---the automotive world. American automakers just don't have the reputation to support high end luxury cars. Benz, BMW, Lexus---they never fell into the pits like Cadillac did. Cadillac's glory days are too long ago to draw upon, it seems, or perhaps not glorious enough.
