I've decided I am like an older car with a perfect engine, but the body is rusted out and the frame about to snap in half. Had a stress test yesterday, and my heart checked out great. I just hobble around with back issues.
There you go that's positive news. Stay well and be blessed.

Went to the Apple Store today to get my iPhone 7+ updated.  Spent quite a bit of time with a nice young man who showed me the major differences between the X phones.  In my honest opinion, these new Apple Smart Phones are much more intricate and advanced than I really need.  It would be a waste of money to buy one of them for the very limited uses I have for a smart phone.

I don’t take or store lots of photos.
I don’t need more than 32 gigs of memory.

So spending $800+ less $275 for my 7+ as a trade is a bit much.  It includes the $149 for AppleCare for the second year and a glass screen protector and a case.

So for once, I am being practical about spending money on something I don’t really need.  Now if I can do the same about buying cars, I would be ecstatic!  :D

I wonder what the guy would say if you asked him to sign a document that the mileage was true and correct. I bet his answer would be...it is, to the best of my knowledge, leaving him an out. I think the numbers should line up....even if it is a Ford.

How about the experts, is it possible to rollback a digital odometer and how would you detect such a thing?

I was thinking though, that Ford had 53000 miles on it and he wanted $10000 for it. I saw an ad for a brand new Ford Fusion with blind spot warnings and other goodies for under $17000. I know $7000 is still $7000, but, if there was possibly a way to swing it, I'd much rather go for the 2018 Fusion which could last me for 10 more years and will probably end up costing me less money over time.

My wife and I visited the Jeep and Mini dealers today; we are still deciding whether to replace the Wrangler with a truly off-road capable vehicle or just replace the Mini with a CUV.
At the Jeep dealer the salesman I had talked with was delivering a car. It's a nice store- not high pressure at all. No 2 door Wranglers floated our boat, and the Cherokee Trailhawk Elite-while extremely well equipped-was just okay.I could tell my wife was underwhelmed.
Over at the Mini dealer we met with another salesman I know pretty well, again, laid back, no pressure. We found a car we both really liked- a 2019 Countryman S E All4, which is the Mini AWD plug-in hybrid. This one was equipped with a full John Cooper Works interior- including high back sport seats and other zoomy trim. It runs the quarter in 14.6 seconds; no rocket sled, but faster than any other Countryman save the true JCW- and it can return close to 50 mpg if you are careful. Of course, there's a downside: price- even with the $4,000 federal tax credit it's about $7,000 more than we want to spend. There was a 2018 Countryman that had H-K audio, navigation, and heated seats- but no HIDs or sport seats. If my wife really likes it I can live with it-it's her call-but I hate to buy a new car that lacks decent headlamps and truly comfortable seating.

One time I had the digital odometer go out. Brought it to the dealer. For some reason that I can't remember I had a pretty good idea of the actual mileage when it went out. They asked me to estimate the number of miles I had driven since it went out and that's the what it displayed when I picked it up.

There's ways of resetting digital odometers and I've seen it done at a previous lot I worked at. I think it might be easier on early digital units than on newer ones maybe because the new computers store a lot more data (maintenance, codes, telemetry data etc).

I've seen it done on an older used F150 that had a functioning cluster but a digital odometer that just went blank for some reason. A guy came and plugged in his computer, and asked what the last known mileage was showing and programmed it as such. It took him all of 5-10 minutes.

Same thing with smart keys. Very easy to do if you know what you're doing.

We had thieves pull a heist in our used car lot I ran (one of several). About a dozen high end cars were driven off the lot in the middle of the night. Our dealership was on a busy road but the thieves must have pulled up in a van or vans with magnetic utility company signs stuck on them to make it appear they were work crews. We found a bunch of magnetic signs in one of the stolen cars that was recovered later.

So because the keys were kept in our office, they broke in, stole the keys for the cars they took that night, plus a bunch of extra keys on top of that. Luckily, because of the dealer owners' reluctance of having every car gassed up (we had over 100 cars on the lot at the time), most had no gas or were near empty. We only added $5-$10 of gas when going on test drives. So most of the stolen cars were ditched within blocks of the dealership because they had no gas lol. A couple were new arrivals that weren't running properly and were scheduled for repairs and service so they could barely run lol.

Other cars were found a few days later undamaged and brought back. A few were totalled in the process.

So for the undamaged cars that were brought back, and for the cars that had their keys stolen but were not taken that night we got the keys reprogrammed on the spot. We had contacts to several legit auto locksmith companies who came, plugged in their computers, deprogrammed all previous keys, and programmed new smart fobs to the cars. All on the spot taking about 10-15 minutes per car, with no original key present. These were mostly smart fobs for newer Fords, Lexuses, Nissans, etc.. Cost was same or cheaper than towing the car to the dealer.

RB, at this point in life, if the few thousand dollars extra is not going to put you in the poor house, just get what you really want. You tend to keep cars a long time anyway, and as I at least know, if you talk yourself into settling, it usually ends poorly.

I am skeptical though about your wife moving into a 2 door wrangler as a daily driver. Not that I know her, but from what she has driven and comments you made, I can really see that getting old, quick. If I was in your situation, would definitely just keep your Jeep for the little bit you seem to actually need it, and get her a more well rounded CUV. But, as always, YMMV.

and for sure, don't compromise on seats!

Saw my first Kia Stinger out in public just now as I was getting breakfast. At first I thought it was an Optima because it was so big. Couldn’t tell from a quick glance if it was the 2.0 or the 3.3 but it was AWD.

As you would expect from a car that starts with a $40s sticker it was driven by some old coot like me.

So just now I got yet another new failed sign-in experience, this time on my laptop.

Clicking on my bookmark to come here, instead of the usual useless "Howdy stranger" page that doesn't work, I got a different log-in page, but one that looked like it was coming out of the Vanilla software based on the design of it, asking me for my ID and password. I entered it, and it came back with a "wrong password" message.

Knowing that seemed like business as usual, I clicked on the "Sign Up" link from the main Edmunds site at the top of the page and got a tiny little box in the top left of the screen containing the main site signup/sign in page that did not allow itself to be expanded. So I scrolled down to the bottom, clicked the "sign in" item, and entered the correct info there. The box went white, the wheel spun for a long time, and nothing happened.

Eventually I gave up on that, opened a new window in my browser, and this time went straight to the main Edmunds page, clicked the sign up link at the top, signed in there, and eventually got in here. At least I think so. My mind kind of goes blank after seeing all these different sign-in pages after a while.

It just keeps getting better and better.

It surprises me that the odometer reading is apparently stored in the cluster itself and not in the car's computer. I would have thought that you just plug a replacement cluster into the harness and hey presto, all stored data about the car is restored.

The 2019 mouth watering $220,000 Bentley Continental GT. The GT is all about excess when it comes to luxury and power. MotorWeek takes this exotic coupe on a full road test to see if this latest redesign puts its money where its mouth is. Me thinks so.

We did those things with a John Deere tractor when I was a kid in rural, rural Indiana.

The downside was one of the two Model A's had a flywheel that was hand turned for starting.

If you are using Microsoft Edge, click on the three dots at the top right of the screen and click on "New InPrivate window". Use that to go to Edmunds.com and log in.

Congratulations. Just remember, we are all hard wired to value "desire" above "appreciation". A few scientists know this, but every salesman knows it. Probably a good thing for the human race because it keeps us striving for more, but maybe not so good financially for individuals.

If you are using Microsoft Edge, click on the three dots at the top right of the screen and click on "New InPrivate window". Use that to go to Edmunds.com and log in.

If you are using another browser, I don't know where to find it.

I understand they are going to give it another shot near the end of the month...if everyone isn't nuts by then.

I use Firefox. Easy enough to open the page in a private window but when I did that here shortly after the seamless transition it made no difference.

Understood. But how often do you need those abilities? Once or twice a week, or once or twice a year? Someone in here, in the last few days, was quoting the old proverb about "don't buy a car based on what you're going to be using it for 5% of the time".
It’s one of those situations where you may not need the capability that frequently, but when you do need it you REALLY need. This year alone I had to pull large trees out of the way twice so that my wife could leave for work.

My wife and I visited the Jeep and Mini dealers today; we are still deciding whether to replace the Wrangler with a truly off-road capable vehicle or just replace the Mini with a CUV.
How often do you go off-road? Off-roading aside, I wonder if a BMW X1 wouldn't be the ideal choice?
We have a 2800 foot tree lined gravel driveway and I need something that can pull large trees out of the way, ford 30 inches of water, and be able to drive across a muddy field if the drive is completely blocked.

Exactly. You don't often need a winch to replant a flower box.

    All I know is this is a common way to see if the old style roll over odometers have been tampered with;

Auto manufacturers combated this problem by creating safeguards in the odometer. On some, if the numbers were tampered with, it would be nearly impossible to make the numbers line up straight again, making it clear the odometer was rolled back.

I wonder what the guy would say if you asked him to sign a document that the mileage was true and correct. I bet his answer would be...it is, to the best of my knowledge, leaving him an out. I think the numbers should line up....even if it is a Ford.

Or you could just get a CarFax.

How about the experts, is it possible to rollback a digital odometer and how would you detect such a thing?
It is easier to roll back a digital odometer...you just need the right equipment. There could be a record of the true mileage by having a dealer check the control module.
    See article here

I was thinking though, that Ford had 53000 miles on it and he wanted $10000 for it. I saw an ad for a brand new Ford Fusion with blind spot warnings and other goodies for under $17000. I know $7000 is still $7000, but, if there was possibly a way to swing it, I'd much rather go for the 2018 Fusion which could last me for 10 more years and will probably end up costing me less money over time.

As much as I like the Focus, it’s no Grand Marquis. Anyway, I think the supposed value of that GM is that it’s rare.
Not a Focus, but a Fusion. Rare doesn't mean it is good or valuable.....still rather have the brand new car with a full warranty and zero miles (0) than one with 53000 adulterated miles........ :D
Yeah, misread that. Fusion is better but for sheer old man lux you can’t beat a Grand Marquis. What can I say, that Lincoln spoiled me.

I agree that the Craigslist seller is just trying to hype his car.

I'm not advocating that you give up the farm. I appreciate country living (and city living). My point was, if you only need a jeep once or twice a year, why spend 30 or 40 thousand on a new one when you have a perfectly serviceable used one sitting there? Spend that money buying a new car that will please you 363 days out of 365, not 2 out of 365.

I discovered that the Mercury owners club has its national get together scheduled for Dayton next summer! A few back the Crown Vic owners were here. Before that the Edsels were in the south suburbs. Great. Something to look forward to now that all the car shows have run out. I missed the best two car shows of the summer the weekend of our son's wedding... After that the weather was bad for those remaining.

    Hail to the Mercury owners!

Garage door opener has been making a grumbling sound. I decided it's the motor giving out and not starting correctly. Likely the starting capacitor has failed.

Bought a belt drive Chamberlain. It's a SMART opener. Maybe it can communicate with the SMART Samsung in the bedroom.

Now to wait for the installation expert to get it up and running.

I plan to do that tomorrow afternoon after my visit to the dentist for the crowned tooth that was hurting me off and on through the week. Really hurting at times. Heating pad and 3 ibuprofin (600 mg) and two arthritis tylenol generics. worth.

Doc couldn't see me until Monday because of his hip replacement. Grrrrrrr.

We've been discussing several possible scenarios. One idea is to get a vehicle for my wife that can replace the Clubman as well as the Wrangler; so far a JK/JL Wrangler is the only vehicle that really ticks all the boxes. Another idea was to simply replace the Clubman with a newer CUV; in that case the X1, Clubman, and CX-5 are the leading candidates.
Maybe we should check out a Sentra SR, as it apparently eclipses most every four wheeled vehicle on the market. Hmm...

    @roadburner,
You can save a lot of money if you go with the base model Sentra. Don't rule it out. ;)
