Virgin America was great, but very limited flight schedule. I was surprised it lasted as long as it did. Life is relative. Tell your friend to fly American or United next time and Alaska may not look so bad.
Many consider the L1011 a better engineered and built jetliner than the DC10, but it was late to market due to Rolls Royce engine issues for one thing. Some also believe profit pressure was pushing McDonnell to cut corners. One big difference was that the hydraulic lines were separated on different sides of the L1011plane, whereas the back up and main lines were close together on the DC10. They believe that the ORD American DC 10 and Sioux City United DC10 may have had better results if they had been L1011's. Of course, that is speculation as both of those airlines have excellent flight training centers, as does Delta.
Sorry to interrupt this airplanes, airlines and airports forum but I want to get back to cars for a second. Right now they are pulling a car out of the retention pond here at work. Lots of speculation on what happened no facts yet. All I can say right now is it's a black sedan and may have been there for more than a few days. More details as I learn of them.
Been here 11 years at the end of the month and this is the second time I witnessed this, although it was another retainage pond.

One thing I don't like about O'Hare/Midway is that if you are going to Chicago, its a long cab ride to the city.

Speaking of airlines and airports, of the hundreds of thousands of miles I have flown in my life, just one flight comes to mind of the hundreds I have taken - a non-stop flight from ATL to LAX on Eastern Airlines back in the 1980’s.
I was sitting in first class on a Lockeed L-1011 - in my opinion one of the best wide-bodied jets ever made. The service was impeccable as was the food. It was a 5 hour+ flight with 2 meal services. Lobster, roast beef, oysters, shrimp, and unending flutes of Dom Perignon! Best flight I have ever been on.
Rose-colored glasses, anyone?! How many of those unending flutes did you drink?
I recall several flights to Alaska in the '80s on Western Airlines. They flew these monstrous 747s in those days, and it seemed to me (as a solo-flying, high-energy child) that they were generally less than half full. I used to run all over those things, which had a 2-5-2 configuration, if I recall correctly. The downside, though, was that smoking was allowed on these flights. If there was a well-populated flight, I would get out at the terminal half-dead and be sick for several days because of all the smoke on the aircraft. Horrible!
As far as walking forever through airports, I think the best thing that came out of increased security after 9/11 is the limitation to ticketed passengers within the terminal. I don't miss wading through the sea of people in the concourses that was once a common sight/obstacle.

Snake - I remember years back in Chicago that the mafia used cars to dispose of hits. If they wanted the body found to send a message, they'd put it in long term parking at ORD. If not, they'd sink it in the lake or river. Maybe the mob has budget pressures these days Hopefully the black car was one dumped because it was stolen or something rather than someone who slid in or had a medical issue.
What exactly is your hooptie collection now, farmer?

They said it was an issue with the settings for my phone at their computers. So, no need to go to Apple Saturday.
My wife's doctor's office would not ring in when she called from our landline. She kept telling them there was problem. They wouldn't believe her because they could call in just fine. My wife ended up called in on her cell phone.
We called Frontier, our landline company, who called back saying there was a problem with the computer setting for the line for that doctor group (a large satellite hospital group). They had left Frontier and went with a VOIP carrier and the redirect on the calling wasn't switched over properly to transfer the calls to the VOIP.
Wow, that’s the ultimate in tech snobbery. The lowly land line gets no respect.
I get mad when reading a car ad when it says “no emails, text only” and I say to myself, what an elitist.

Based on the lane monitoring systems I’ve experienced in other company cars I don’t think I’d like it. I’d freak if the car suddenly jerked or swerved.

One flight out of how many, on that day, that were on time.
Stuff happens - I'm sure we all have our own horror stories of delays, cancellations, re-routes, lost luggage, etc.
Could be worse - could have been on Lion Air 610, on a brand new 737 Max 8, that crashed last week.
Yes, it can always be worse, indeed. I’m sure British Airways does not advertise itself as “At least we are not Lion. Be happy to be alive”.
What seems to be worst in this story is not the delay, or breakdown, but the fact that nobody was there to help the stranded people and there was no communication. Orlando and JFK are not minor airports, where services and infrastructure are limited. Nobody took charge, or initiative, probably because it’s mostly subcotractors with limited decision power and one who had it was probably in his/her bed not to be disturbed.
Airline execs are geniuses. First they create a system that is sheer hell, and then they offer you ways to buy your way out of hell. What more leg room? 60 bucks. Sandwich? $15. Want to check that bag? $20 bucks. Like to board early? $15 bucks. Faster security? $85 bucks.
I saw one that surprised me Monday morning during my commute. It turned out to be a Corolla, but at first glance I thought it was something much more expensive. The owner purchased some very nice aftermarket wheels and larger tires. The tires and wheels looked a lot like what you might see on a BMW. Really changed the appearance, made it look much better than your average Corolla. No idea what it cost, but it was money well spent.
A sharp contrast to most aftermarket wheel and tire combos that in my opinion degrade the appearance of the car.
Mike, I've found the Apple store in the Town Center in Boca Raton to be very helpful and always go there to have anything done. It is always crowded though but when I got my new battery last April, I got there early enough to where the guy opening the doors at 10 saw me walking with my cane and let me enter the store first so I wasn't trampled by the mob waiting to get in. Seriously, there must've been 30 folks waiting but he had an employee walk me in first and over to my seat in the back. I found that very very nice of him and did let his superior know about how much I appreciated his courtesy in helping me get situated. For some reason, the Coral Square mall doesn't have an Apple store though I think they could use one here out west. Luckily, Boca ain't that far to drive for us so I don't quibble about it. And now with my new 8 Plus unit, I've done everything through the telephone or through my MacPro so don't have to leave the house. And I must say, my 8 Plus is the best smartphone I've ever owned and do plan on keeping it longer than I normally would. I got 64 gigs for apps and all which is plenty and also the wireless charging capability, something I just no longer wanted to live without. And using "OfferUp", made it financially a very smart move where I got a brand new Apple unit and the guy who bought mine, got a phone in excellent condition with a new battery, it looked brand new with now scratches or marks of any kind on it plus a screen protector. He just put his sim card in and it showed "Cricket" wireless on the top corner. Took him a couple of hours to get his stuff to move over into it and we had a fair amount of texts back and forth until he did it right. I had had the phone unlocked but since Cricket uses the AT&T network, I knew he'd be o k. It was just human error on his part till he finally connected it to his computer and iTunes account and after that was completed, he was good to go!

Nice wheels can make a big difference....for the better; Ugly wheels don't help;

Generally true. It feels like the market is getting ripe for disruption in the other direction. Perhaps not just yet, but the first airline that figures out a way to provide "just right" level of comfort (not too low, not too high) at similar price, may take a jackpot. It will take a while, as companies like those get deeply entrenched in their own thinking. It happened once already, when Southwest took the market by storm - "all" they needed were 10 year fuel contracts at good levels, delivering on their somewhat limited promises (friendly attendant, quick boarding, no luggage fees and bag of peanuts and a drink). Of course now being so large, Southwest is also experiencing some problems similar to those seeing in the the big ones, but they still seem to hold their line where it counts.
As mentioned, my biggest peeve with the "legacy" airlines is their constant, almost incessant overpromise. Somebody mentioned Ryanair, or Spirit - that's fair, but with those guys you know what you're getting, they don't make it secret. You know you'll be squashed into a small seat (Spirit), or you'll be subjected to somewhat abusive culture (Ryanair) before you buy the ticket. Legacy carriers market themselves in a way suggesting they will treat you like royalty (or at least aristocracy ), "forgetting" to mention that might be (at least partially) true only if you pay three-to-ten times more than "normal" people. Even in their premium classes level of service very seldom raises to comparable to that of their foreign competitors, more often it falls painfully short (if you only saw United's business class seats in their older 777, you'd know what I'm talking about - and they charge same prices). On the "regular people" product, I don't need to be treated like royalty, but Southwest's way is good enough to me, even if their flight attendants tend to be overly familial at times (IMHO). The discord between marketing message and the actual product, is probably bothering me the most, not the actual product itself.
It’s been awhile since Snake chimed in about the car in the pond. I hope he didn’t discover that the car in the water was his.
what I have found out is it was a man that has been missing since October 20th. The police are still investigating this. How it got into the pond and how it was discovered I still don't know.

I never have a problem at the Boca Apple Store. Yes, a very busy store, to be sure. I always buy my phones at Apple because they give you instant credit for your trade-in phone unlike T-Mobile which requires you to send your phone in for appraisal.
Hey there’s a question. What happens when you text a land line? Do you get a message indicating the landline can’t accept texts or does the caller think he’s being ignored?
Nothing apparently. I've had friends say they sent a text to our landline instead of our cellphones. They've even sent pictures. But apparently no bounceback like with email sent to a nonexisting address.
Oldfarmer....here is something to think about. Your strategy of buying cheap but getting more miles out of a car is a good one. I liked your formula, something like 10k miles for every $1000 spent.
Here is the question. How will you get cheap hoopties in the future when cars have so much electronics on them and as cars get more complexed only certified technicians can work on them. And as parts get more complex like $700 headlights it may be harder to do. When my 2015 E got destroyed they told me the whole headlight alone was worth $5000.
Will cars become like TVs and when you need a new one it will be cheaper to buy one than to repair the broken one? Especially if we really start using electric cars that only have a few moving parts.

I did a little research on this and found it depends on the carrier. Some will bounce it back saying that the number cannot accept texts, some will convert it to voice for a fee and some it just disappears never to be seen or heard from again.

I was just reading about that shooting in Thousand Oaks, CA, at a bar. My Prayers are for those families who must suffer the aftermath of this horrendous mass shooting.
I lived a few miles north of Thousand Osks in Chatsworth back in 1997-1999 (San Fernando Valley). From the reports I’ve read, the shooter was an X Marine who may have been suffering from Post Tramatic Stress. A month doesn’t go by without some kind of mass shooting - sometimes even weeks separate these tragedies. God Bless those poor families.
OK, so it got a little strange this morning and my mind wandered (get the paddles...CLEAR) and being a Game of Thrones reader/fan, I was looking at the sigils and words of some of the different houses and it struck me that they sort of look like brand badges and slogans
So... what make/model of car (current or extinct) would members of these houses be driving?
I could see the Greyjoys in trucks based on their sigil, but "What is dead may never die" could be referring to notoriously unreliable vehicles Baratheons in Plymouths?

Targaryen-Fiat (flag logo sorta looks like the Barath insignia) Baratheon-Plymouth (Fury) Lannister-Peugot (Lion logo) Stark-VW (Fox logo....I think VW actually made a car called a Fox) Tyrell-AMC (who actually made a Marlin, which goes along with the fish logo) Greyjoy-RAM (at least that's what the logo on their flag looks like) Martell-Mitsubishi (a stretch, but kind of looks like the tri-star logo) Arryn-Pontiac (bird like logo could be a kin to the infamous "screaming chicken")
I've had good luck selling my old smartphones for the most part. Used "OfferUp" the last two times and worked out great to be honest. As long as the folks are honest and truthful about the condition of their equipment, all should be well. I bought my 8 Plus from a nice young lady, brand new, but just the phone. Have had no issues at all. And I sold my 6s Plus a couple weeks back to a nice kid who after finally figuring out how to load his stuff, all went well. Once he calmed down and listened to the directions, all was good. But I knew the moment he put his sim card in and it showed his carrier, that all was fine and I had indeed brought the phone back to the beginning so all my stuff was gone and it was like a brand new phone. Have also bought a few lightning cables and some cases and again, all have been great. As of now though, done with anymore electronics and all for a few years as my 8 Plus is only a model year old and totally up to date. I paid a fraction of the cost of the current phones and that's o k with me. Once Apple will no longer support this phone with updates, that'll be the time to look into switching. Never thought about bringing the 6s Plus to the Apple store as I had already bought the 8 Plus and didn't know if they'd buy without me buying from them as part of the final deal. All that matters is I'm extremely happy with my new phone and I have double the gigs.
Hope everything‘s been going well with everybody in here, this is one form I haven’t been in here in months since sometime in the summer time. What has been going well, still working at my same old job there’s a good chance they might not close up, who knows we shall see hoping and praying for the best. Delete off people in June and July but thank God I’m still there. Still jobhunting and living life to the full list. I know the time I come back in here will be a few more pages of postings so anyone who replies probably probably will never get to read your posting will be married in here in the pages and pages of posting. So thank you in advance, if anyone would like to contact me off here please feel free find me on Facebook it’s my name, and you’ll see the picture of my 61 Thunderbird, can talk off here on Facebook messenger just send me a message there too as well if you’re interested. The car is still not on the road. Missing very missing a very important part of the registration, went to the DM V a bit over two weeks ago, so have my brother contacting the prior owner hopefully work with me, or Plan B‘s gonna be register the car I don’t office of the DMVE in upstate New York, because my brother told me he was able to register his old truck up there with the old registration sticker and not the part that the prior owner was supposed to sign without a problem, show me south see right now the cars useless can can’t be driven by anyone or even sold if I wanted to ha ha. Hopefully resolve this mess when you go up there around Thanksgiving time. Other than that like I said living enjoying life to the full us all.

Legacy carriers market themselves in a way suggesting they will treat you like royalty (or at least aristocracy

So... what make/model of car (current or extinct) would members of these houses be driving?
Baratheons in Plymouths?
2020 Acura RDX tech SH-AWD, 2023 Maverick hybrid Lariat luxury package.
Baratheon-Plymouth (Fury)
Lannister-Peugot (Lion logo)
Stark-VW (Fox logo....I think VW actually made a car called a Fox)
Tyrell-AMC (who actually made a Marlin, which goes along with the fish logo)
Greyjoy-RAM (at least that's what the logo on their flag looks like)
Martell-Mitsubishi (a stretch, but kind of looks like the tri-star logo)
Arryn-Pontiac (bird like logo could be a kin to the infamous "screaming chicken")
