For those interested in the Tesla Model 3 screen, this is the left quarter of it when in park. Ignore the weird pattern. In real life it's just white. You can see your distance to empty, the "gear" you're in, can open the front trunk and rear trunk, open the charge port, and open other applications.

Excellent, thank for showing that. The information looks complete.

Oldfarmer....I liked your analysis of the market, and actually all of your comments.
I once heard people buy things in the store when they go on sale - how come they don't buy stocks when they are on sale?
Most fundamentals are still pretty strong......people are in panic mode because interest rates seem to be headed up - taking some money out of equities, and the trade wars inhibit global growth - and that is a big unknown, how much damage that could cause.
We were probably due for a pullback anyway. I am holding what I got, I know people who panic and sell when markets are down, and it is true, some of the biggest gains are made when the market rebounds.

Wasn't GG going to pull out of the market a month or two ago? If he did I am going to let him be my investment manager.

I think the Fed needs to raise interest rates a little. They are too low to allow the Fed room to effectively react to a real recession. Artificially low interest rates have tended historically to lead to problems. Just look at the Greenspan years chairing the Fed. It ended quite ugly. I don't think the market would have gone as nuts if there weren't other issues going on. I'm not expecting a big correction though. Growth as expected can't go on forever and I believe the market just got ahead of itself. Having said that, I think lots of new tariffs (taxes on US consumers in effect) aren't necessarily smart. They won't bring near the jobs back as expected because technology has already replaced many jobs. If you look at the reopening of the US Steel plant outside of St. Louis, only a fraction of previous employees were needed. Meanwhile, higher prices spurned by tariffs will likely dampen consumer spending and corporate investment. But creating a false crisis can be a good PR tool!

Most of our retirement money is 'in the market', so we've taken a hit and it will probably continue next year, too.
Still working and won't be require to take any money out for another 7 years, so we can let that ride.
We also have a amount in FDIC insured fixed term accounts.
It's not easy to watch your account balances drop despite contributing a substantial amount every paycheck, but you have to take the bad with the good, if that's the game you want to play.

Like @tyguy, I live in Colorado. Also, I have a solar array on my house.

And a nice app on my phone to show how much energy it produces. Here is a screen shot from last week. It’s nice that we get so much sunshine here.

    How big is your system?

It might say something on the charger.

I didn't see anything on the charger itself except for the symbol on the interior red part, but I didn't get out of my car so maybe there is small print somewhere. Maybe someone can tell by looking at a picture.

There are 8 of them. 6 in one row and 2 located 90 degrees from the 6. This sign is near the 2:

Here's a close up if it helps:

My only regret is that now that I’m retired we take all our dividends our of the account for fun money. I can’t benefit from buying in low like when we would reinvest them.

You can never predict the market. In my Enterprise 401k I switched from a stable value bond fund to a S&P 500 investment right at the very top. I took a chance it would keep going up but instead lost 9% YTD or $45. I’m lucky that my investment flyers are pretty modest.

  • Last two pics. This is how the left side of the screen changes when you drive. A few things to note:
    • The speed replaces the "gear" selected.
    • There's a little steering wheel on the left. That's the autopilot telling me it's ready to take over if I want it to. It'll change color if I engage it.
    • There's a speed limit indicator.
    • There's a speed (43 mph in this case) inside a circle. That's the cruise control and will indicate what speed I set it to. The system will slow down for traffic in front, but that number will stay at whatever I engaged cruise at. It's a way to see how fast the car will speed up to when traffic clears.
    • There's a car next to me as indicated by the light grey image. On busier roads I'll see all the cars to the left, right, front, and behind me.
    • You can see where I am in my lane, and in this case I was a little far right while passing that car. If I cross the lane without the blinker the steering wheel will vibrate. If there's a car there and I try to turn into it, the system will auto correct and recenter me in the lane (if you turn on that part of the active safety features).
    • Lastly, there's a line under the MPH. Right now, in the middle, there's a small piece that's dark grey. That shows how much power I'm sending to the motor. If it goes to the left, it turns green and shows how much electricity is being regenerated while I decelerate.

  • And here's the last one. This shows me pulled into my garage. It's still in Drive, but you see a little H in a circle. The brakes have auto engaged and will hold the car until I press the accelerator. You can also see wiggle lines around the car and those indicate obstructions along with the distance to them (31 inches in this case).

Okay. That's it. There's a ton more on Nav and system setup, but I think this answers the questions that were posed earlier.

Takes some guts, if that game was in Boston, there should have been some boos.

That reminds me, I saw a recent Calgary jersey with an Atlanta Flames patch - not worthy, IMO. The city lost the NHL twice, can't understand why it would be memorialized when even the ginormous amount of northern transplants in that crazytrain couldn't save it.

Boston Bruins are playing the Carolina Hurricanes(ice hockey)
Carolina is wearing throwback Hartford Whalers uniforms(team moved from CT to NC).
It's still a sore subject here in CT.
Turned on the game, Bruins scored with in the first 15 seconds of our watching.

so, no, his statement is incorrect. If he had qualified the statement as applying to broad-scale use and total replacement of fossil fuels, then the statement is more solid. But to say "solar can't be taken seriously by anyone with an IQ over 70" is simple ignorance. A house with solar panels, especially in SREC states, is quite effective and economical as a supplemental source.
There's an awesome NOVA show on Netflix right now, "Search for the Super Battery". If you haven't seen it yet and have an opportunity to do so, I recommend it.

The Calgary Flames are the old Atlanta Flames. The first time Atlanta lost the NHL.

Atlanta lost the NHL a second time when the Thrashers moved to become the new Winnipeg Jets. The old Winnipeg Jets are the Arizona Coyotes.

I have been working on transferring apps and data to our new phones. I discovered that Google has a full copy of the data from my current phone available to use to restore to my new phone. I was NOT aware that Google had been given permission to do a full backup.

I wonder how many others have their Android phones fully copied onto Google's servers. I wonder how much the data from those backups is sold for, in the manner of facebook using and/or selling that data over the last 6-8 years.

I recall Google having been tested sometime this year as to their use of the location data to track one's activities, store to store, time spent, etc.. The finding was that even when the location data was turned off or Google did not have permission and said they weren't using it, the location data still got sent to Google when the phone had access. These testers actually manipulated the phone communications sot hey could intercept what was being sent from the phones back to "headquarters."

    Does Apple do the same?

Talk of a modern day NHL team in Seattle has existed for at least a couple decades. The critical mass to support a team just wasn't there for a long time. Now, so many transplants have arrived that it will probably work - at least in the short term. This area is traditionally a non-hockey market, even though there is small but devoted local hockey community. I've been into hockey since I was young, including playing it (poorly), when I was a kid, I was probably asked a million times if I was from Canada.

I just hope they play like the Golden Knights, or the local sports fan might abandon them, they are as fickle as anyone. There will also be a huge base of "fans" who pretend to know a lot while the opposite is reality. Think of insane sports parents, but at a pro game.

I was thinking/hoping Seattle would steal an existing team, but the league needs an even number, and weasel Bettman is good at serving the (mostly) inheritance elite team ownership base with expansion fees.

On iPhones, back-ups to the cloud can be manually controlled.  You can turn back-up on for automatic backing up or you can turn it off and back-up your data, passwords, etc., to your PC only.  It has to be enabled if you want auto back-up.

I've seen that one, some irritating stuff there. Seattle has "the house the taxpayer built", so that idiocy happens in the PNW too. One cool thing is that the NHL (and maybe eventually NBA again) facility is mostly private funding. Of course, there are other tax gifts, as it will all trickle down.

I have purchased soft tri-fold covers for my last 3 trucks. 3 different brands, costing in the range of $200 to $300, and didn't notice any appreciable difference amongst the 3. Not keeping the trucks for more than 2 years, nothing ever goes wrong.

Whatever you buy is not really going to add to the resale value, so don't get carried away and spend a lot of money. The soft tri-folds do not make your bed water tight, but they do create an almost water tight storage. If you need water proof, then buy a plastic tub which seals and place in the back.

A soft tri-fold is a little like a convertible roof. Anyone with a pocket knife can get in, but "out of sight, out of mind" does provide some security.

Its my opinion that if you carry a phone with you there is nothing you can hide.  They know your location, what speeds you drove, your internet searches, your bank account info, etc etc.

If you use it for work there is even more information stored in it.  Think of the sensitive emails in that inbox.

I have a Extang brand Tri-fold. It's now on it's 3 rd truck and is 8 years old. It's easy to take off, if necessary, for large items. Like @henryn said, you can get into it with a knife, but it's a lot easier than a roll up and a lot less expensive than a solid metal one.

Probably a pretty good rule of thumb. I just keep an eye on fundamentals and the general “mood” of the markets and the country in general. The following are just my observations with the U.S Economy.

U.S. in a shutdown that looks like it’s going to go on for awhile. That makes the financial market even more jittery than they already have been. Treasury Secretary calls banks, to tell them “everything is fine”, when no one can really see that as credible. The Financial tone is not confidence inspiring. Treasury calls will make the markets even more nervous.

If the Fed does their job unencumbered, they’ll continue to raise rates, making even more money flow out of the markets.

Wall Street is jittery as the deficit is growing with no end in sight. D.C. is chaotic with no hint of stability. None of that is a good thing.

Aside from some discounted shares I bought through my company’s payroll deduction, I’ll be totally out of the market here shortly!

What I want for Christmas is a Mercedes-Benz EQC 400. Rumoured to be cheaper than a Tesla Model X and prettier too.

Except that most convertibles are broken into by smashing a window, it's a lot quicker.

Market is down another 400+ points again with volume exceedingly high for such a shortened trading period today.  I’ve watched all the economics mavens explain why the markets are in Bear territory, but there is no one reason for the trading losses.  The Fed is one reason, but then there’s China and trade and the partial Gov’t shut-down and a general uneasiness among investors.

Not too much to celebrate in regards to the stock market.

I was able to log into the Church's website and watch their Christmas Pageant yesterday afternoon with my oldest grandson doing the narration and my youngest grandson playing the part of an angel. I went on to my PC so I could watch it on a bigger screen. This technology is amazing - at least I was able to see my grandsons faces on live streaming TV for the Christmas holiday - something that sort of made my day! ;)

Lots of negative news from the mainstream in total terror voices. Lots of small sellers, few larger buyers. Trading days before holidays are usually unbalanced. I'd be surprised were there not more volatility.

Vacation time. My opinion is that major stock houses are not buying (or selling) before the short days when Orders were put in to their mutual fund companies Friday to sell fulfilled today. Most bigger traders are on vacation, the rest of the week. I would expect large houses next week to be staying out. Perhaps some pickup buying will start quietly. The computer operated buy/sell programs--who knows what.

The Wall Street companies will be buying while they talk down the markets to the "little people" on the shows on TV and the articles in part of the internet.

The little people usually are wrong on tops and bottoms. And as for the media picking stocks, I got taken once when the print business media was pimping a stock. Something called Marathon Oil that had split from X, IIRC. Refinery headquarters were still in Ohio for what had started as the Ohio Oil Company. Of course, the stock went down for a long period. But since recovered and has spun off another company. Both send checks. . Whenever we drive past I see the large tank by I75 with the patriotic picture and love it.

Yes the technology is simply amazing, our church live streams services over the internet. We have regular viewers in Europe and Australia. Truly amazing for an independent nondenominational church.

Well as you might recall we did one of our vacations in Canada this year. We my wife has a charm bracelet and wanted a Canada charm to commemorate the trip. Well I found a maple leaf charm with Canada written on it online so I ordered it. Well it came in today and while I didn't expect a tinnie tiny shipping box I do think the box they used was way to big. I know there are smaller shipping boxes that can be used. Well here is the charm sitting on top of the shipping box.

Not to get off topic here and talk about cars, but I saw a Stinger in the parking lot at the USPS Friday. Red. Took me a minute to realize it wasn't a regular Kia as the trunk label said "Kia.". I'd seen a few on the road, but had a chance to
The side profile and how the rear doors and roof are treated is very nicely done and unpretentious. The trunk is not deformed to make it blend into the styled roof or side profile like on a few cars, including the Malibu and Accord.

I'd like to see a Hyundai G70 but that likely won't happen unless I see one in Plymouth or Canton Michigan if we drive up to visit our friend next week. I'll have to check for a store there.

I once read that about 1/3 of your stocks will be positive, 1/3 will flow with the market average, 1/3 will go down....you just have to hope the 1/3 that goes up goes up a little more than the 1/3 that goes down.

Sounds to me like an argument for an Index fund or ETF.

I don't think you can pin this market drop on the Federal Reserve. The hike is quite small and rates are still below historic norms.

Ya think? Individuals who try to pick individual stocks fall into a different category, one that I'm not worthy to join.

The with the accent is Tea, a'l'erable is with Maple.
All packaging in Canada has to have English and French, even though French is spoken in about 15% of the homes and most of those people could speak English if they really tried.

That ring coming in the big box.....at least it won't get lost on the way. ;)

My wife is making lasagna for tomorrow. She realized she didn't have enough eggs and asked me to run to the grocery store.

Holy Cow! The place was packed. People had full carts. I never realized people grocery shopped on Christmas eve.

There was an Infiniti QX30 parked next to me. Nice little CUV. Never saw one before.

If you don't have sufficient funds to require a money management company, you can't do better than use a low management fee mutual fund company. Very few people can know when to buy in or when to sell, and they become too emotionally involved. Best to invest - if the market is low plunge in, if it is at a high point, go in in steps, and use an index fund....the market generally goes up, and if a company goes under, it makes up a small percentage of the total investment so you don't get killed.

We ran out of milk and we need some just for today. Made the mistake of running into QFC (owned by Kroger). The last time I saw that many middle fingers in a parking lot, I was driving on roosevelt blvd in Philly. Yowza.
