I guess it's not a good time to note that the temperature will be in the mid to upper 60's today and tomorrow here in Colorado. Though I still have a fair amount of unmelted snow in my back yard.

Perhaps not, temp at home seems to be hanging around 16 or so. While my area appears to be in bullseye for really heavy stuff , so far only Virga , that will change tonight

    :)

EDIT : Ok never should have mentioned just virga, within a couple minutes and its snowing now (light cold stuff)

Not sure if I'll get the chance to "give 'er all she's got." Gov in CT is closing state highways starting at 9 pm. By the time I'm on my way Wednesday AM, the roads should be plowed. That doesn't mean I'm not going to go tearing around my block for a few minutes:)
Ah, some people have all the fun! I can't even try out my AWD down here.

Of course, my Jag is AWD with a snow button. Supported by Lucas electronics. So, when I hit the "Snow" button, Led Zepplin comes on the radio and the rear sunshade rises. I wonder what the rear sunshade button does? :D

I want to see field goals kicked with footballs filled with helium.

You might be a little late to see that. Rumor was that a couple of kickers in the old SWC might have had a little helium in the football. Also, at that time they could use older kicking balls that were broken in. Steve Little (Ark), Russel Erxlaben (Tx) and Joe Williams (Wichita St.) in '77 & 78 set records with 67 yards. Tony Franklin had 2 in the same game of 64 and 65 yards. Missed field goals at that time came out to the 20. In 1989 they started coming out to either previous line of scrimmage or spot of kick which made for more risk on the long attempts.

Just a stupid question but it seems that in every sport the balls aren't in control of either team. Why would the players or team members even have access to the balls?

One of my knowledgeable tennis guys said this could be a slow Super Bowl year...not a lot of excitement considering the two teams playing. I am just wondering if all this stuff about the air pressure is to build up the hype to attract more fans. I mean, is that possible? ;) .

Apparently not. Here are a couple of answers from an interview after a deflation issue against USC(?) a couple of years ago:

A: Not in my opinion. Both teams use their own set of footballs [on game day]. Both teams can do whatever they want with them – maybe not by the definition of the rule, but in reality both teams can do what they want. If you were sharing balls with the other team, then I can see why there would be something wrong with it.

A: Before the game the officials ask for like, six footballs. You provide them to the officials before the game in the locker room. Then they take a Sharpie and they mark them on the white strip with whatever marks or colors they recognize as saying, you know, ‘We’ve approved these balls.’ After that, you’re not supposed to touch them at all. But between your ball boys and the ball being on the sidelines – and then at halftime, when you control all of your own balls – there is ample opportunity to adjust them.

Just had to check on something...someone was asking me if Miami is much warmer than Tampa. I checked the weather at 4:30 today, Miami is 76 and Tampa 63! It's a distance of 280 miles...that's quite a difference!

Mike, I may come down Feb 14th or 15th or meet you somewhere in between (pencil me in for now). I know, Feb 14th is Valentines Day...but, I'll celebrate with my wife before or after. She wants to return home for a few days in there, I refuse to go back except at Christmas time.

And FLA is now the 3rd most populated state in America, having bumped NY out. Over 19 million people now, almost 20. And it's not seniors---lots of young people, lots of immigrant population who can find low-wage entry jobs. AND no state income tax! AND 9 months of very tolerable weather.

    robr2 said:

If you're talking about the NYS Thruway which runs from NYC to the PA border near Jamestown good question. The bonds that built the road were paid off in 1996 and the tolls should have ended. Never did. Now they want to raise them 40% to pay for the new Tappen Zee bridge.

Another reason I want to squat in driver's garage down in Florida.

Florida has 734 miles of toll roads - the most of any state.
Just like any state, there are good and bad sides. Personally, I don't see the appeal of Florida. Yes taxes are low but:

it has the lowest spending on education in the country
it has the 6th highest violent crime rate in the country
it has the highest identity theft in the country
it has the highest health care fraud rate in the county
job growth is still mainly in low wage tourism jobs.
Some of those are pretty minor...highest identity theft, highest insurance fraud, highest health care fraud. I think people driving while yakking on their cell phones is a bigger problem than any of those. Not to mention hurricane season.

But generally, Florida offers a pretty good standard of living, and there is that glorious sunny weather. Lots of people live here who came from the North. They came here for a much better standard of living on their pension incomes. btw...things are kind of booming, jobs, home sales, purchase prices, construction.....

Just for the record, I hardly ever see mosquitoes or even flies, or any insects for thet matter....except on the front of my car after going on the highway.

Do you really believe that talking on a cell phone while driving is a bigger problem than $80 billion a year in health insurance fraud, the identity theft that targets those the state is trying to draw (retirees with money), and a high violent crime rate? C'mon - you're smarter than that.

Here's a neat nugget I found: between 1980 and 2008, 13 million people moved to Florida from another state. In that same time, 9.5 million people left Florida for another state.

Listen, I know you like it but it's not for everyone. I've been enough times and spoken to enough residents to know that I would get so bored out of mind in a very short time.
I think the health cost fraud figure is $80 billion for the whole US.

The total cost of accidents in the US is $871 billion a year in economic loss and societal harm,

It is estimated that cell phones and other distractions, but cell phones being the greatest by far, could amount to 25% of all accidents.....or over $200 billion.

Also, car accidents involving cell phones are responsible for about 2500 deaths in Florida a year.(Fraud is serious, but doesn't result in death in most cases).

Some people leave, but the state is growing more rapidly than any other state. Salaries may be lower but costs are lower than many states. It definitely isn't for everyone. Being bored doesn't depend too much on where you live....it depends on what activities and what people you know and how you like to spend your time.

We used to stay for 2 or 3 weeks and that was enough...just a nice break. But, if you plan on staying for a few months or more you have to have activities and get to know some people.

Driver...thanks for the figures. We have an office in Orlando. I go there often. That area is just now beginning to get its footing from the economic crash 7 years ago.

Amazing how some areas will continue to throw gobs of money at something that seems to have bottomed out like DUI/DWI, qnd ignore a much bigger problem like texting and driving.
Then again, you could always live in Texas. Sometimes I am downright ashamed of my home state, or at least the politics therein.

AUSTIN — Gov. Rick Perry’s veto of a statewide ban on texting while driving is unprecedented, bucking a national trend that has seen most states enact such laws.

Perry is the first governor to veto such a bill, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures, a nonpartisan group. Since the first statewide ban on texting while driving was enacted in 2007, 34 states and the District of Columbia have enacted texting bans for all drivers.

Advocates for the bill say Perry’s decision will put Texas behind in traffic safety and ultimately cost lives.

To all you guys (gals too) up in that blizzard area, cuddle up and stay warm - and don't go out in that mess.

When I lived in the Chicago area, I remember two blizzards - one in 1967 with 28" of heavy wet snow (couldn't find my car parked on the street for 8 days) and one in the mid 1980's with 27" of snow.  In both cases, schools were closed for 5 days.

So I can definitely empathize with you after having been through a few sieges myself.

God's speed to all of you.

I moved to Southern California in 1990 and have not been "in" snow since then.  To see snow, every winter I would look up at the mountains surrounding the Palm Springs area on the way to work and see the snow-topped mountains.  That's as close as I want to get to snow for the rest of my life.

Looks like Hyundai is getting ready to start dumping the Elantra into the marketplace. From Automotive News:
Hyundai is less than a year away from redesigning the Elantra compact car, its most popular U.S. model.

First, the factory will spend a little bit to help U.S. dealers clear out inventory of the current Elantra, Hyundai Motor America CEO Dave Zuchowski told dealers Sunday at Hyundai’s make meeting here.

Hyundai is planning to offer increased incentives and extra-rich trim packages for the 2016 model year to give the Elantra an edge against rival models, he confirmed after the meeting.

“We know it’s a fiercely competitive segment, and we need to sell that vehicle down on a smooth basis to clear the decks for the new model,” Zuchowski told Automotive News.

The Elantra's U.S. sales fell 10 percent last year to 222,023 vehicles.

    Financing plans

Hyundai also introduced dealers to Sam Suh, the new CEO of Hyundai Capital America, the parent company of Hyundai Motor Finance and Kia Motors Finance. Before taking that position this January, Suh worked as head of overseas business for HCA’s Korea-based parent company, Hyundai Capital.

Suh told dealers that Hyundai plans to offer discount financing for returning customers to help Hyundai’s customer loyalty.

“We have a lot of lease returns coming back this year,” Zuchowski said. “[Suh] announced some changes earlier this week to make sure we’re capturing those return customers and putting them into our cars.”

Hyundai dealers interviewed after the meeting said they were optimistic even though Hyundai’s recent growth has lagged the overall expansion of the industry. The brand’s U.S. sales rose 1 percent in 2014 to 725,718 units. The overall U.S. market rose 6 percent.

Last time we got 20 inches of snow, everyone was back to work the next day. The wind has everyone kind of worried, as it could cause us to lose power. That is more of concern than the snow accumulation. The area around work can be a pain because there is no place to put the snow.

If the snow is a powder, high winds can create drifts of 10+ feet easily.  The other problem is the cold temps you will have for a week or so - no melting possibilities.  So the snow is going to be around for quite some time.

Meanwhile, I am watching the Australian Open Tennis match. I do know something about tennis at least.

Nice report. My brother has a 2 year old Elantra and he really likes it. He is the one that traded in a 10 year old Civic and got an Elantra for $4000 and his trade. Must have been the cheapest 10 years of driving ever recorded.

I'm in. My Subaru is not. Tonight's commute was not a problem at all. New York & Connecticut DOTs have been continuously plowing and salting. My wife called me on my way home and he asked if I wanted her to clear the garage. Sure. I'd love it.

I get home and squeeze my Legacy in the garage next to the Pilot. There was barely enough room for me to open the door. I couldn't get in between the 2 cars and definitely couldn't fit on the other side of the Pilot.

So she gets a call from work saying they expect her to be in tomorrow (at some point). They'll pay people to stay at the hospital (she's a PT) until their shift starts. So she took my Legacy and drove 2.5 miles to work! She told me it drove great. She made it safe & sound. I'm closing tomorrow, so I get a snow day with the kiddos;)

I seem to be in some kind of "dead zone" near Philly. still clear roads mostly here. Just a dusting. And i would not be surprised to see us end up in the low end of the 1-4" scale.

Bodes well at least for the Kid getting home on the train Wednesday! Though quite likely could have done it on the plane tomorrow if they had not cancelled the day already. Certainly Wednesday, if they had a flight to put her on and she could get back to the airport.

though after a 16 hour plane flight tonight, the train might be a nice change of pace.

car related, she really wants this visit so she can take the Volvo back down with her next weekend!

Glad to hear the Legacy delivered her safe and sound! Looks like some parts of CT really got hit hard, a few miles makes a lot of difference in this storm. How much did you all end up with?

And I understand on the garage thing, one of my weekend projects is to clean ours up so both cars can fit in before hurricane season.

Thanks for your concern everyone. There is still a travel ban on state highways here. So I'm just going to hunker down & hang at home with the kiddos. I don't think we got more than 8 - 10". @exploerx4 got hammered according to what I see on the news.

Hey NYC, We didn't get that much snow (6 to 12 inches). I cleared everything in front of the house in about an hour. Travel ban is still in effect, so I'm home. Doing a little work, but I'll probably end up taking 1/2 a vacation day. Getting ready to walk 1/2 mile to my mom's to shovel her out. I'll be back in plenty of time for my 1pm conference call.

Here in Northwest Vermont, not a flake. The weather talking heads still are saying we'll get 4", but unless this storm takes a sharp left-hand turn, I doubt it. January is the month with the least precip., and this one is living up to that. It's cold, but bare ground. The most snow up here is usually March, so there's still a lot to look forward to.

Sounds like yet another overblown event driven by a bunch of media flakes, precipitated by the need to rain ads down on our heads.

I'll respectfully disagree. I just finished clearing 24" of overblown event off my driveway.

I got maybe 2 inches. Good news, airlines back up much quicker. Got princess rebooked on a 9:30 flight in the morning tomorrow. Should be fine by then,

Are those real or Belichick inches? :D

Have to say I do miss the snow a bit, but the 200+ inches we got up in the UP were about 150 too many. Cruces got a couple of inches late morning here the other day but they didn't close the schools at 5 am when it was still clear out. The snow came so they finally closed down at noon. Lots of unhappy parents who got stuck driving in bad conditions "twice".

If you need a car fix, the sledgehammer to the aluminum F-150 is getting all the press but I found the Z06 Road Test more interesting.

about 4" here, I think. Big change from the 18-24 they were predicting yesterday morning. The John Deere made fairly quick work of it, disregarding a breakdown due to a disintegrating plug wire that added about 30 mins to my task.

From what I see on WCVB, looks like Boston and suburbs got nailed. The local sources here were hyping it up for Nova Scotia too but apparently it took a right turn at the coast of Maine and most of it missed us. We have about 4" down right now and it is not very windy, with just a few flakes fluttering down now. Looks like the worst is over.

No shoveling for me. I'll wait for the plow guy to come. I used my neighbor's guy the other day. $40 well spent.

Yep, these folks can guarantee their forecast for global warming because they can keep moving the forecast further in the future, but they can't forecast the actual weather for the next day !!

We have the same problem here in Colorado - how much to predict?

Which would you rather have - a prediction of 24" but only get 8" or the opposite? I think there would be much more screaming and finger pointing if 3x more snow fell than was predicted, with the resultant traffic and public transit tie ups. Better safe than sorry

I recently read a great book about Sandy, and the back-and-forth that went on amongst the different federal and state agencies that couldn't agree on how much the storm was going to affect the US, and where. Since it wasn't a hurricane, certain warnings couldn't be made, which just confused the decisions makers.

Come on robt, you live in Boston. If it didn't happen in NYC, it didn't happen...period.
