You're singing my song. In my case it's 11 years and 152K miles.

That said, the car is in generally good mechanical shape but has any number of surface dings as well as several shades of red paint on display. Honda paint doesn't age worth a damn in the desert, and I've needed a driver's door, rear bumper cover and front bumper cover replaced over the years, as well as a fairly significant repair to the top rim of the windshield which involved a local repaint.

It's not a showpiece, but I very much enjoy it, almost as much as I enjoy having had it paid for for over a decade.

Going by miles driven can be skewed and inaccurate too. Increasing speed does increase risk of a fatal accident, simple physics should tell you that. The problem is your assumption and premise is incorrect. Yes, increasing the speed of a collision does increase the chances of having a fatality. However, that DOES NOT translate into increased speeds increasing risk of a fatal accident. The main reason for that is that you first have to have an accident, for an accident to be relevant. If less collisions happen at higher speeds, then your chances of being involved in one decrease. Less collisions decreases your risk of having a fatality. This is why both air travel and high speed roadways tend to be the safest. There are other reasons, but this is what it boils down to.

Then of course there are the side reasons why going faster is safer, which seem to outweigh the "physics" factor, which is why you don't like a straight-forward mathematical and objective equalizer of per miles traveled/driven.

Actually there are multiple studies that show in speeds in excess of around 40 MPH going faster increases your risks of a fatal accident. I really cant see how faster is safer if all other factors are consistent. The reason I don't like the miles driven, or any other single factor, is that it's more complicated than that. There are many factors at play including, but not limited to, speed, relative speed to other traffic, traffic density, road design, road condition, terrain, climate, type of vehicle, condition of vehicle and driver skills just to name factors off the top of my head.

I thought it was odd. I wondered if she was in a diabetic low blood sugar state since it would seem most people having trouble controlling a car would let up on the accelerator and come to a stop.

Well, "they" rank Canada #1, and Canada is pretty close and available, but I sure don't see many people clamoring to move there from the U.S. Maybe those rankings depend on who is doing the ranking, who you ask, what your critera is, and what your agenda is.

Few people move for a little better standard of living. They will move if it means having a much higher standard of living. And, it isn't as easy as it sounds, you just don't get let into Canada because you want to go there...there is a process and it is a difficult one, in the same way people can't just apply and they will be let into the U.S.A.

btw.....getting access to healthcare without it wiping you out financially isn't the same as being given a free car. I don't use the healthcare system that much fortunately for me, but, I am glad my friends, relatives, family etc. have access to medical care, and never have to worry about how they will pay for it.

Certainly free health care and free cars are not the same...but they are examples of what many people would support if proposed by government, which is how I used them.

Agree people would vote for someone who offered them a "free" car, they think there are no costs involved. But, healthcare is a different concept.........a country should strive to look after all it's citizens basic needs - healthcare is a basic need just as shelter and eating are basic needs...free car, not so much.

So are you saying the government should provide people's shelter and food?

I don't think anyone actually starves to death in your country, and there are shelters or welfare so you hopefully can find a place to spend the night indoors...unless you don't want to.

One day, a few years ago, I was out by the road near the baseball field that I do grounds keeping at. I heard an odd sound and looked up to see a lady coming down the street and she was occasionally running off the road. When she got right across the road from me she ran into a telephone pole. The grill got pushed in and the hood got bent up.

Then the front wheels started turning and throwing up dirt and grass as she tried to go forward with the pole holding the car back.

As I started to walk across the road to see if she was hurt, she backed up, pulled out onto the road, and drove away.

Got a phone call (surprisingly, not a letter) from the police dept where my (alleged) speeding ticket was from. So apparently, the vast majority of people just pay the ticket (with no points) and don’t ask for a hearing, as I did.

As such, they won’t be able to schedule the hearing until May.

Interestingly enough, it won’t be in a court, but at the police dept HQ. Sure, I’ll get a fair shake from the exact dept who benefits from the cash grab shakedown. I asked him (he said he was a Sgt) if it would be a true hearing in front of a magistrate or a judge. He said they’d use whomever would be available, including the police dept to render a judgement. Yeah....this is going to go well.

I suspect they feel they are on solid ground with the kangaroo court setup in light of the Ohio court decisions.
I wonder if there's an attorney who has specialized in putting a monkey wrench into the well-oiled gears in some way.

I'm going to mention this to my new Ohio representative along with my increased fuel tax comments. He's new. We got rid of the insurance agent as state rep; now we have an ex-sheriff. But his website is not up and running a month after taking office. So no email. No phone number obvious. Hmmmm.

Perhaps if we all thought (thunk) more about the children (what’s best for them, that is) we wouldn’t need traffic and speeding tickets!  The police could concentrate more on preventing and stopping crime and mayhem.

I'm afraid I'm too old and cynical to believe in the basic good intentions of the public. Why stop for the red light? Why even slow down? Let the other guy watch out.

Also I know my Kid’s school has a little party today and everyone brings in a little treat.  I went to BJs last night for that as you can’t beat 24 mini cupcakes for $3.00!!

I saw a daily show clip yesterday where Trevor Noah talked about how weird it is coming to the US and learning how cops work. It was about passing a cop on the highway, doing the speed limit while cop was below, and getting pulled over and lectured. The gist of it was “in this country you don’t pass a cop!”

I'd take that story with a grain of salt. A big one. I have never seen a car pulled over for going below the speed limit unless there was a light violation, e.g., one headlight or taillight. Or weaving.

A good story. We were under a boil advisory for all of the county provided water system and the central system which is provided by City of Dayton starting last night. Late afternoon some of the areas north had lost pressure.

It took the city system and the county system working until 2:30 am to determine the leak was in a large main that is under the Great Miami River. The river is currently in high water stage. Out of safety concerns all folks on the county system and the city system were to boil and reduce use.

Then this morning they provided a map that localized which areas actually were affected by the high pressure main that has burst or broken. Our area is not affected.

It is scary that so large an area can be affected by the danger in unclean water. The plans for action were established after 911 and the anthrax scares. The City currently pumps the water because the County Water System's well had become contaminated or inefficient, I forget which.

I realize there are events beyond hurricanes, tsunamis, tornadoes, forest fires, and so on that can be a problem.

plus the fact that a cop pulling over someone without a legitimate reason could face some serious disciplinary action and might even warrant a criminal complaint against him or her.

Sounds like your municipality handled the situation well, Imid. I recommend everyone hold chlorinated water storage at their home just in case the public system isn't available for a period of time. We have a 50-gallon drum and another set of 5-gallon containers.

I know, I hate it when people just keep on rambling on ad nauseam. They just keep going on and on really saying nothing like it's just like they like to use bandwidth. just rambling on and on taking forever and ever to say something that should only take a line or two. They never seem to know when to quit just drone on like there is no tomorrow. It's annoying that they take forever rambling on and on. Unlike someone like me who knows when to stop. You don't have to tell me to keep it short. I don't keep going like some people who won't be named who just post one long boring paragraph which almost makes your eyes bleed. Nope I make mine short and to the point because I hate those that come in and post really long posts basically saying nothing. Those people are really annoying. Nope I keep it short and sweet and not rambling on like others do. I really hate it when they go on and on and on, I mean either get to the point or shut up. They seem never to know when to stop a post, it just becomes endless babble. Say the phrase that pays "wlip is going to make me rich" and win valuable prizes. If it is not in front of a judge or otherwise arms-length magistrate, but instead someone who works for the police department, it would appear to be a clear violation of the Due Process clause of the 14th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States.

As this is a civil violation for @graphicguy, there is no violation of due process. The threshold requirements and rights afforded are very different.

Anarchy as a form of social order is best left to discussions in college cafeterias, if you ask me. I live in the Land of the 4-Way Stop Sign. I have seen anarchy up close. It isn't pretty.
