Here is a cut and paste from Real-World Trade-In Values on 4-3-19 concerning the sale of Mrs. j's 2012 Legacy 3.6R Limited. Just thought you guys would want to hear that after a few years of moaning and trying, I finally convinced her that she needed a new car in the burgundy over beige that she coveted so much. Damn, I'm good. B)

Well, Mrs. j's 2012 Legacy 3.6R Limited was sold to Carvana this morning. They said they would be at my house at 10 AM and they were a few minutes early. Carvana valued her car at $12,751 and that is exactly what they gave me. The guy had a pre-printed check for that amount so I asked him if the car was not in the condition I said it was, would they just tear up that pre-printed check and hand write me a new amount? The guy said, "NO, they would start the ball rolling again and would have to get a mechanic and / or body guy to come out and re-value the trade. That would take at least 3 or 4 days but that is how they operate. I was just curious.

Here is a little about how they operated with me:
If anybody wants any more details let me know.

A little later I'll post about the purchase of her replacement car. A slightly used 2018 Legacy 3.6R Limited with around 7,150 miles.

Greaty, I posted about the JMonroe award and then you posted an even longer one...you are still in the lead.
Anyway, that was a good story and I actually learned something....how Carvana works and it seems pretty good.
I am looking forward to how the 2018 worked out, and if Mrs JM is going to keep it or get you to buy back her old car for $17000.

Another cut and paste from Real-World Trade-In Values today. This is the final episode.

It's all over now. Mrs. j is the proud owner of a 2018 Legacy 3.6R Limited (burgundy over beige) that had just under 7,150 miles on it when we headed home. I'm a little late with this since we bought it yesterday afternoon.

When we showed up (Mrs. j, Son #1 and I) the used car dealer had the paper work done so we were only there for about 20 minutes. That was the quickest deal I ever had. If I could speed read faster it wouldn't have taken even that long.

As I mentioned before, the no haggle price for the car was $26,922 and it was in great condition and shined nicely. Almost begrudgingly Mrs. j said, "yeah, that car looks good. My old Silver car was nice but nothing like this car". I've been telling her for years that she needed this color. Now she knows that I was right. I worked her perfectly. Kinda proud of myself too.

I think the most interesting part was when we were leaving. The salesman said, "I'm happy you came back to buy this car even though we couldn't come to terms about your old car. If it was up to me, I would have offered you 11 grand for it but the owner only wanted to give you $10,500 and he dug in with that offer. I would have loved to have that car on our lot after we replaced the passenger mirror but that is water under the bridge now. Damn, I wish we had that car but we couldn't give you $12, 571 like Carvana did. No way could we have gone that high but 11 was doable. I think you would have take 11 for it if we offered it, right"? I told him, "I would have taken 11 for it but you didn't budge off your $10,500 offer so I had to walk". My Son then said, "if you don't mind can you tell me how much you would have had it on your lot for"? Without any hesitation he said, "$16,550 and we'd hold to that price for a month before we lowered it but I doubt we'd have had it for even a week".

Even guys in the biz for years can screw up a good thing when they have it in their hands and get stubborn. I'm glad they did now because I really made out on the sale of that car to Carvana.

    THE END.

I haven't seen it appear on their website yet, but usually does not take too long. Mine was just a couple days. Though you said something about a backlog of inventory? Still makes no sense to not list it all to sell what they can! But they do have a whole lotta cars in stock.

I'm waiting to find my lease return in inventory - nothing yet. Someone on the lot said they wanted it before I left with the new car, maybe it sold without a listing.

Congrats on the new ride. Great car. As for "working" Mrs. J, I am not so sure just who got "worked". Didn't she end up with a shiny new car, and with you feeling great about it? I have a feeling that she is about ready to be the proud owner of a new dining room set and with you having an even bigger grin on your face. Mrs. J is about as sharp as Mrs. Houdini.

Hey, JM, congrats. Hopefully the shiny red/beige Subie will let you avoid some of those races around the dining room table for a while.

Have to admit, though, I'm disappointed to not read about a trip to the dealer with a sandwich to grind them down on the price.

I think there is some amount of circular reasoning going on (self fulfilling prophecy). Sedans became a little less popular, so some makers stopped concentrating on them so they got staler, so even less attractive, and thus you end up with a death spiral.

even at lower volumes, they still sell a lot of them, and they should be pretty cost effective. Plus most CUV platforms are car based anyway. So, maybe the answer is to figure out how to make sedans more attractive to buyers, and try to win some buyers back. plus it still to me seems like ST thinking to get rid of them entirely, since that takes sedan buyers (often entry buyers, who you can get "into the family" to move up the food chain),

so maybe you don't need 3 sizes, and cut back to 2. heck, even one can cover up and down if you are smart about design. And stop trying to make family sedans overly sport (so, low and harsher). A higher hip point could appeal to buyers. Stuff like that.

does not seem hard for Ford to maintain a sedan off whichever new CUV platform makes sense to replace the focus/fusion (maybe Jetta sized?). Same with Chevy.

No! Circular reasoning is personified in the government/s requiring American auto manufacturers to continue to build “loss leader” cars. There are way too many examples. It is also circular reasoning to try to get a small car when a large car to truck is wanted or needed. But it’s actually much simpler: too few consumers chasing too many (artificially dictated) products.

USA governments have for decades if not generations forced American car makers to make & sell “loss leader” small “cars”. On the other hand, CUV’s to pick up trucks that have insured USA jobs & profitability were wildly vilified on many areas (with little to no truth) as if jobs & profitability are bad words.

It may not be obvious to people who have little to no sensitivity to business, but business will not long remain in business continuing the sale of “loss leader” small cars because those in charge with little to no sensitivity to business fantasize about robber baron profits. So it’s probably pretty obvious what consumers really wanted/want/continue to.

So for example, the other hand clapping is that in today’s car market, there are literal STEALS in the small to medium size car/sedan “loss leader”markets. Yet some of these “steals” almost can’t even be given away?

Fast forward to today’s passenger vehicle fleet, less than 25% & more significantly % falling are small “cars/sedans”. Obviously 75% & a growing % are large cars to PU trucks to trucks. Indeed, I would be surprised if sedans are 20% of the PVF.

So for example, IF I wanted to get a medium sedan today, it would be a 2019 Toyota Avalon. But it doesn’t do Toyota much good unless they can book an actual sale.

Keep in mind that in the 1960’s (59 years ago), compact cars were a TINY sliver of a minority of the PVF. They were really “COMPACT’ in those days.

The pure fact of the matter is automotive manufacturing has actually produced better cars. ANY car in today’s American market is engineered to go 100,000 miles to 150,000 miles “first major tune up” & truly beyond.

Here is a car whose engine had to be rebuilt at approximately 225,000 miles https://news.yahoo.com/apos-ll-never-guess-many-132121899.html
Ruking, are you trying for the JMonroe how to put someone asleep award for longest post of the month?

Another case of "pigs get fat and hogs get slaughtered".

Houdini.
Hey, don't downplay what I did. :@ While I saved well over 5 grand getting the 2018 vs a 2019, that wouldn't come close to covering her getting that dining room set. That's another one that took some work.

My wife and I had dinner with some friends last night at their condo. I parked the 2 Series between a Type R and a Levante.
I felt like I was driving a Yaris...

I feel that way with the lack of diesel options ( I4-2.1 L TT, I4-2.0 L, V6-3.0 L ) Given the lack of diesel options, the V8 4.0 L to 5.8 L gasoline engines have the current appeal. . However, the $$’s up charges & later depreciation/s are insane, ...far from cost effective, with poor fuel mileage in gasoline engines I4, I & V-6, V8, even if one can run them through business’.

With as much luck & how pleased we STILL are with the MB 250 BT @ 79,000 + miles, most MB ‘s are better off leased; if one simply has to have almost ANY model MB. The 2014/2015 GLK 250 BT seems to have been and/or remains (GLC 300) one of MB’s better efforts. So far, it ranks up there with Lexus/Toyota in durability and reliability, ...in my opinion.

my son got to do his laps on the Watkins Glen track today. He said it was really cool to do. Saw 92 on the back stretch in his Genesis. I am sure the 3.3t was still loafing, but the pace car was generous giving him that much!

Decided Spring started yesterday, so I swapped the glass in the front door for the screen, put out the patio furniture, turned on the outside water, hooked up the hose and washed the car.
Only bad thing was that the chipmunks had eaten a few holes in the hose, so it took me a while to patch/slow the leaks.

Very elaborate and nice event but the target audience for the Escape appears to be Gen Z. While that may be true many grannies find compact SUVs like the Escape far more appealing than the Camry.

There are of course, many many more, which were detailed in the now closed Edmunds.com site “I Hate SUVs, Why Don’t You ? Those (HATERS) that disregarded the sites topics, missed the massive trend switches by a lot, or were used to being in denial.

We were picking up a living room chair, so I drove the GLK today. Handles well, almost the same engine as the E400, it does ride higher and is easier to get in and out of. But, an SUV feels like a workhorse to me, a car says fun and the lower seating makes it hug the road and corner better. I prefer a real trunk too....I don't like that big open area in the rear. I know I am a dying breed, but, there, I said it.............

You said it (best) yourself. The CUV IS a Utility? vehicle.

One could’ve easily put that chair into the MB E400 and carve (close to .85 G) turns with the cargo tied down? Indeed if one compares, both can post close to .85 G turns.

Indeed, it begs the questions: why spend $50k when $70k will do just fine? Does one carve .85 G turns 5% + or more of the time to warrant specialized sedans, tires, adaptive suspensions, etc., etc.?

I’m not knocking anybody’s choices. I had a Z06 that could pull slightly more than 1.0 G. It’s alignment had to be dialed back to app .09 G + so the inside treads would last longer. Indeed I made 2 confirmed folks upchuck...

You have to get your facts straight. The used 2018 Subie I bought was from a used car lot that was a no-haggle place. The guy didn't lower his price one penny and Carvana gave me an on line price, which I had no input to other than describing the car I wanted to sell. So, what "wheeling and dealing" are you talking about? :o

Great advice. I will say, Mrs D really likes her GLK, and I do like having one hauler around....so one sport sedan and one SUV works for me.
