With all that money you saved wheeling and dealing you should be able to afford your own airline ticket to Florida. ;)
You have to get your facts straight. The used 2018 Subie I bought was from a used car lot that was a no-haggle place. The guy didn't lower his price one penny and Carvana gave me an on line price, which I had no input to other than describing the car I wanted to sell. So, what "wheeling and dealing" are you talking about? :o

    jmonroe
You shopped to get the best price possible for your trade - in, and you found a 2018 Subie that you could save on....you did some homework. If you did wheel and deal you could probably have saved another $500 you left on the table (that's for your claim I left $200 on the table :@ )

Here is a link to the Escape introduction at Greenfield Village.
Some of it good/some kind of dry. About 15 minutes long.

Very elaborate and nice event but the target audience for the Escape appears to be Gen Z. While that may be true many grannies find compact SUVs like the Escape far more appealing than the Camry.
I'm surprised that Ford isn't a little more PC. They only had Black guys playing basketball. Hey Ford, believe it or not, there are White guys that play basketball. Now take Subaru, they're all for Love. B)

I like those cars driving around in the field and the owners watching them like they are at the dog park.

Without wheeling and dealing I got more than $2,200 from Carvana compared to what the used car dealer held to for the 2018 Subie. I'd say that is pretty good. Then the no-haggle price for the used 2018 was more than a grand less than several sites I checked for that car, including Edmunds. This was the first time I ever sold and bought a car without the old game of negotiating. And yes, you DID leave 200 bucks on the table. Whereas I left nothing. In fact, I picked up some money. :p

I dare say the Escape looks like a Kia Sportage, at least the nose of it. Losing the SUV lines in the back as well.

I'd rather have a longroof, but we can't have nice things anymore.

I thought JM lived for the haggle, so I was surprised by his affinity for a no-haggle dealer, a concept that I have always believed works for the dealer but not so much for the buyer. I remember the tales of him sitting down across the desk from the salesperson, unpacking his lunch, and settling in for a long but ultimately productive grind. Reading his story this time was akin to your favorite athlete signing a free agent contract with the former teams most hated rival.

Odd story today from our local "consumer watchdog" reporter.

    https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-scotia/automobiles-recall-honda-canada-consumers-buy-back-1.5080925

The TL:DR here is that a woman had a 2007 Honda CRV with almost 150K miles on it, and brought it to the dealer for a windshield wiper repair, only to discover that it was the subject of a recall. The recall is in the provinces of Ontario and points eastward and deals with excess structural rust. Following inspection as per the recall, the vehicle was deemed unsafe to drive and Honda offered her $6300 in a buyback. She felt it was worth more and began making a fuss.

In truth the amount offered seems more than fair to me for a clapped-out 12 year old Honda but what do I know.

And the Mustang just missed the tree that split the Corvette in two.

The Corvette came from the bottom of the picture. The Mustang from the top. Just off the top of the picture on the left side of the road is the fire station where a member of the fire police actually saw the driver lose control of the Mustang.

Exactly. Local commenters on the story are suggesting she should hold on to that offer like grim death.

CBC here, perhaps nationally, seems to have a "victim of the day" mentality in their story assignments.

The cross street was not a factor in either case. Nobody was making a turn on a curve or at a corner. Just idiots who thought they could drive because of the car they had

IIRC it just mentioned the house was on a corner (which it is) not sure if it mentioned any car turning. Now we may have inferred that a car was turning but did it actually say or implied it?

We’ve had a love hate, vice versa relationship with our Honda’s. But few cars we’ve had have beaten the $.0334 per mile driven (depreciation- 250,000 miles, $.028 is still the # to beat) when sold cheap @ $4,000 USD. There was no rust. The most important part it was flawless for my daughter through Doctoral studies, 2,200 miles away.

saw something interesting yesterday (not car related). stopped at an open house in town (just curious to see what is out there) for a new build. small builder did 2 infill houses in an older neighborhood, so not a development or "mass market" builder (AKA crank them out fast and cut corners where you can).

anyway, overall a nicely designed and built house with some good touches.

the interesting part was a water distribution system I had never seen in person (I think they did it on this old house though). They used the plastic piping (PEX?) with the red and blue lines (hard to screw up those connections). And in the basement, they had a manifold at the main water line where each tube came off, with a valve for each, all nicely labeled (kinda like a fusebox). Very neatly done too. one nice thing is that you could turn off any zone at the main without shutting the whole house down. And could just do hot or cold. No more fishing around under the sink or behind the toilet. And stuff like the ice maker line to the fridge which is never easy to get at up top.

I just thought it was a cool looking system. gave me a good feeling about the care that went into building the house.

I think you have me confused with the @jipster (he's the sandwich man). I don't know how you can do that because I doubt he looked like Dean Martin in his younger days. I don't do the sandwich thing when I buy. Usually no more than 30 minutes. In the past (the last 15 years) they either bought my car at my price and sold their car at my price or I walked. However, with this new thingy of no-haggle, that seems to be so popular nowadays, the game seems to have changed but that doesn't mean that I will let a dealer steal my car. Walking is still in play when I buy.

As I said before, I was all set to buy a new Subie at a dealer about 120 miles from me because they were the only dealer that had the EXACT Subie I wanted Mrs. j wanted (6 cyl. burgundy over beige). Then at the last minute Son #1 found a 2018 that was exactly what she wanted at a used car dealer about 7 miles away. I was still leaning towards getting the new one when my Son said, "I don't know why you want to spend more money getting a new one. This used car dealer has been around for years and he's known for selling cream puffs and at reasonable prices. I'm sure when Mom's car had 7K miles on it you didn't worry about the reliability of it and I'm sure when it had 7K miles it was more than a year old. This car still has the remainder of the factory warranty on it so this should be a no brainer. I remember when I was growing up you only bought used cars and most of them were private party sales with no warranty and that didn't scare you. Cars today are a lot more reliable than back in the 70's and 80's. How could it hurt for you to go look at it ?" He didn't have to remind me of that because I was already thinking the same thing.

I guess you can say 'the rest is history'. And I didn't do the lunch thingy either.

FWIW, I just thought of this, the new car dealer is in Hollidaysburg PA which might be the Subie dealer that @venture deals with.

    Me too.

Just last night when we were leaving the restaurant after celebrating Grandson #2's birthday, we were heading to our house for dessert (Mrs. j picked up an apple pie that he likes), he and his younger brother wanted to ride over in Mrs. j's new Subie, when Son #1 pointed to the windshield that got bombed by a bird. He said, "at least it was a nice bird. Most of them just bomb the car in multiple places". Like that was supposed to make me feel good. :@

I think you have me confused with the @jipster (he's the sandwich man). I don't know how you can do that because I doubt he looked like Dean Martin in his younger days. I don't do the sandwich thing when I buy. Usually no more than 30 minutes.

Geez. I dunno how I could make such a mistake. I guess with both names starting with the letter "j" it is possible. Only problem is now I will have to start liking his posts and laughing at his stories.

Perhaps my mental acuity has been distracted as they are now forecasting 10" of snow between tonight through the day Wednesday. I may not emerge from this house until after the Masters is over. I promised myself I was not going to shovel any more this season but that is a lot to try to ignore.

saw something interesting yesterday (not car related). stopped at an open house in town (just curious to see what is out there) for a new build. small builder did 2 infill houses in an older neighborhood, so not a development or "mass market" builder (AKA crank them out fast and cut corners where you can).

anyway, overall a nicely designed and built house with some good touches.

the interesting part was a water distribution system I had never seen in person (I think they did it on this old house though).

That pex is taking over the plumbing market. When Son #1 put a game room in the basement of his house about 4 years ago, he did the pex thing complete with hot and cold manifolds as you described for all the water connected items (bathroom sink , bathroom jacuzzi, washer, wash tub, outside hose bib, wet bar, stuff like that). He said when people come over and walk into his laundry area they seem impressed. He's also used it in the flip house he's working on.

I've heard plumbers say it has eliminated the theft of copper tubing in the wee hours of the morning in new builds. Which has grown to epidemic proportions in the last 5 years or so.

Our resident plumbing guy @nyccarguy can tell us more about the extensive use of pex in his area.

Yes, a cross street, but neither vehicle was turning. They were travelling along 322

It's still a corner, you might be thinking  of "curve".

One of the fire police saw the car go out of control on the street. If he was turning onto the side street, it was REALLY stupid. But he wasn't, since he hit the house before he got to the side street. The Corvette had come from the other direction at a high rate of speed over a rise and got airborne and lost control. Tree won that one BIG time

FWIW, I'm going to do my taxes any day now. I still might owe even with the tax change. Damn, I really dislike doing taxes. If I could find someone to cheat like I do, it might be worth spending a few bucks. :@

I looked at the Streetview for Bus. 322 in State College. It looks like a drag strip along there, no stop signs or signals, nice and straight, nothing to slow anyone down except local traffic entering/exiting. It badly needs some traffic calming.

Hey driver, one of your countrymen won the Valero Open golf tournament yesterday in Texas. $1,300,000. U.S. Corey Conners. A young guy (27)just married last October. Anyway he was a Monday qualifier, unheard of for one of them to win. I don't think he would have won if I hadn't been pulling for him so hard. His bride was there and I thought she was going to faint many times. Great win. He looked and acted like a really nice guy. The win also means he qualified for the Masters that will be played this week.

    Humor on:
They should put in speed cameras. Some of our local towns tell us that a speed camera stops accidents. LOL
Maybe they can put up a red light with a camera in the middle of the run.
Dayton and adjacent Trotwood make a fortune off their cameras. The cities claim cameras stop accidents. But then
they show the Pontiac hitting a mass transit bus at 100 mph estimate, turning the bus on it side.
I guess the cameras didn't stop that one.
    Humor off:

The legislature just passed a bill with speed and red light camera controls in it. Again.

Almost all of us are. His new wife was really excited.

I don't normally follow golf but that story was on every major newscast......and it was quite a win. Hope it isn't a one time fluke.

What price convenience? @jmonroe1 is just drinking from the fountain of youth, since the no haggle thing is very millennial.

    I think that was Snakeweasel.

if I had a house at a corner where people tended to do that, I would install some concrete pilings out near the curb, then plant bushes in front. Keep the cars off the house that way.

That's the thing, the house is NOT at a corner. It's on a straight stretch of 25mph road in a residential area

And the Mustang just missed the tree that split the Corvette in two.

The Corvette came from the bottom of the picture. The Mustang from the top. Just off the top of the picture on the left side of the road is the fire station where a member of the fire police actually saw the driver lose control of the Mustang.

If you lose control of a Mustang or Corvette on a straight road you must be traveling so fast that the car lifted or you are such a poor diver you should be restricted to a bicycle.

I hate birds. Had to wash my car yesterday. stopped at Shop Rite to restock the pantry, and came out to find bird poop in multiple spots. And I don't even park under trees! Very depressing, but at least it was nice and warm enough to get it clean in the driveway.
:@ jmonroe
I was driving on a bridge across the Intracoastal Waterway in the Volvo some years ago when a couple of pelicans unloaded. Needless to say there was a car wash stop on the way home, immediately after that run. And I was never so happy that I didn't open the sunroof that day. Especially knowing that the weather was nice enough to consider it.
