WA will let me renew my current license but after 2020 I won’t be able to use it as a valid form of federal ID. If I want that I’ll need to go through the extra hoops required for an Enhanced DL.
May just start traveling with my passport just to avoid an in-person visit to the DOL.
A passport required to travel within the US. 1984 arrived a little late.
Nope, you can still get in your car, on your horse, bicycle, unicycle, pedal car, canoe, dog sled, pogo stick, roller skates or whatever and travel the Lower 48 without a passport. Just cant do it by plane or train.
But the foot is in the door ! I guess before long we will be seeing roadblocks with people demanding, "Show us your papers" !
They were saying that since New York became the first state to require vehicle registration back in 1901. And if you watch the right YouTube videos you will see that there are people claiming that we're there now.

Funny you mentioned that. Today I was taking my son to his therapy program and on the bridge across the river were multiple police vehicles blocking half the lanes, lights flashing and a bunch of officers checking registrations and inspection stickers. I guess the papers on your windshield is the first step.

pretty sure that certain emergency notifications will come through even if you have text turned off. And you may not even need a data plan. Don't worry, if the carrier wants to find you, they will.
The only text notification you cannot turn off is the Presidential one, everything else you can shut off.
That is the one I would like to turn off! (OK....just joking)
If you have a phone, and actually carry it with you....and have data
So 99% of people would be good to go!!
I only know one person in my fairly large circle of friends, family and co-workers that doesn't have a cell (smart) phone.
Edit: His wife does... so most likely he would still get the info anyway
My wife has a cell, with data.
My phone stays in my car so I can call to say if I am going to be late for dinner or something like that.
I don't need calls near the day....I don't like getting calls or being connected.
Sorry, we will miss you Mr S. Loved your unique sense of humor and common sense replies and advice. Hope you get to use your skills where even more people can benefit. Good luck going into the future.................
@Mr. Shiftright, I thought you were joking until I saw your email. Thanks for sharing your vast knowlege of the ICE and BEV universe. We will all miss you. Happy trails.

Sorry about that but I hope Shifty will indulge me as I share in part his email dated May 31, to wit:
"This will be my last day in the Edmunds Forums. No, nothing awful happened. Just a change of focus—the normal ebb and flow of a growing corporation. I'm sure you have all experienced something similar in your working lives. Nothing, after all, is forever, and I had a good 20 year run. I wish I didn't have to go, but I do.
I'm writing on this last day to a select group of people, just to give a sincere thanks for being a good community member. I hope you felt that I treated everyone fairly and with respect, and if I occasionally failed you, I trust you will forgive that lapse in judgment."

The world has changed, sadly, and rightly or wrongly there is more emphasis on border security than ever. For all of my life up until a few years ago Canadians could enter the US with little difficulty. Then after 9/11 certain types of ID were required. Then maybe 10 years ago that was escalated further to require a passport or "enhanced drivers license", which IIRC are only available in a handful of provinces.

Yes...in an emergency situation (as in imminent weather danger) the warning will be pushed to your phone whether you have data or not. The only way it won’t come through is if your phone is turned off.
But, you can say the same about your TV. You have to have it turned on to get any sort of warnings.
Geez-Louise, @Mr_Shiftright ....I know I speak for many of us. We are certainly going to miss your knowledge, your sense of humor...most of all, we’re going to miss you!
Not sure how this works, but I’m hopeful you will come visit from time-to-time.
Well, thanks for posting the email. I had various emails from edmunds.com in my email I use for car forums. I need to inspect each one carefully in the future before deleting.
He will be missed. He certainly did his job with fairness that I could see. Lord knows this forum wandered off into politics and bordering topics that could go political easily. He had faith that the group here would self correct when we swerved too far from centerline. Sometimes he provided a tow truck to get us out of the ditch and back in the middle.
We've lost several hosts in my few years here on Edmunds. I've enjoyed all. Same for those still here.

I paid for the passport, good excuse to use it. I also bought the "citizen deluxe" package with Global Entry/Nexus, which if you use it at least once a year is probably worth it, given the hilariously inefficient gongshow that is both border crossings and airport customs in this area.

They had a EV display at the farmer’s market today. Pretty good selection of Teslas, Nissans, Chevy Bolts and even a few Kia Soul EVs. Pretty impressive ranges on some of them. Over 300 miles on one Tesla. A Nissan Leaf owner was honest and posted a 90 mile range for summer but only 50 for winter.
For style I was drawn it the BMW i3 which had a very nice interior and suicide doors with no B pillar.

We need to stay away from political statements, overt or thinly veiled. They tend to lead to escalation.
Driver100 is a foreigner, he doesn’t understand our ways.
I wasn't going to comment but I considered it to be satire or humor....not a political statement. For one thing I could of meant....."all presidents". But, if someone wants to officiate who am I to say anything.
Mr. Shiftright had an incredible sense of humor, and he was very knowledgeable about so many topics, and he had a very concise but easy to read writing style....it is scary that people who are that talented can be downsized.
You know I worked for a major book publishing company at one time in my illustrious career. One year we were at a sales meeting and we were going to be publishing a book that was about how, if you lose your job that could lead to you finding an even better job. The president of the company told us he was leaving a copy of the book for each of us under our pillows that night. Hmmmmmm
But, the truth is, often that push out the door, although very difficult to take at the time, can lead to a better job or a better career in the future. Hope it works out that way for Mr S.
Attended an autocross event with new 330 BMW. Cool event, everybody had an opportunity to make several laps with an instructor. All cars were blue, loaded wjth everything under the Sun, 59K sticker (almost 20 grand of options!).
They also made several models available for street drive, almost all models. Triied same G20 3-series , less loaded, X2 40M and X4 30. 330 was a little bit of a letdown. Nice enough, but it didn’t feel special enough to ditch my current F3x 430. Plus a few choices making it even more „mainstream” - electronic parking brake, for example. The lane departure was very intrusive, not only warning, but also steering the car back. Anyway, not running to a dealership.

I was watching some videos...10 most reliable cars, 10 least reliable cars, 10 cars that were returned within 1 year, and then I watched this one; https://youtu.be/T00cSB90fDk 10 Cars You Should Never Buy. It is pretty scary when you see the potential problems some models can have. If you bought one of these cars and had some of the problems described you would not be a happy camper. I flipped through, and was surprised at some of the problems these cars could have.
That is just an awful clickbait video, Driver. Highlighting any vehicle from the '00s model years now is pretty ridiculous when they are pushing 15-20 years of age. So is quoting mileage numbers where things can fail when they are totally unrelated to mileage or wear. As is saying "X will happen at just x,000 miles" when it is totally without context or meaning. Do they ALL fail at x,000 miles? Some? A few? It's also odd that they highlight the Fiesta transmission problems but not the identical ones in the Focus. I could go on and on.
This reminds me of some of the crackpot things I see on FB.

AND some of the opinions seem to be based on a survey from a company, not the highly loved CR. We all know how GM was chided for using a survey. I note at the end they encourage people to post comments. The makers of the video probably get paid based on the comments posted as well as the number of views. So I agree with the clickbait label.
I think oldfarmer should watch the video to double check before he buys a hooptie.
Some of those models had terrible glaring problems. There is probably an easier way to check a particular model, but, the video did make me aware that there are some real lemons out there.

Without any context or statistical citation, they could put any 10 cars in that video and say similar things.
