Just booked a Caribbean cruise for late September, ex. Miami. Perhaps an extra day or two to drive up to Boca, visit my aunt and cousin. My aunt is 91, perhaps she is one of the many women who have accosted abacomike!

Too bad the Boca Concourse is in February.

    Which cruise line/ship?

My son and I had this conversation just last weekend regarding yesterday’s shopping ways and today’s.

I recall my parents bemoaning the local dairy who no longer would deliver to your door. But, that didn’t stop them from going to the local “Super” Market to pay less for dairy needs.

I bemoaned the demise of Radio Shack, where I was always able to go find an alligator clip, or batteries, or a remote to replace my broken one. It was always a quick trip that I could get in, and get out and their store was right down the road. That was more important to me than price. Now, I have to go to the nearest traffic clogged “mall area” to Best Buy to do the same. It’s not quick, nor is it easy to get in and get out.

I order from Amazon. I like it. It shows up on my doorstep in a couple of days, and I don’t have to fight traffic. Do I sometimes pay a little more? Sure, but I’m not using any gas and my time is worth more than anything I might save by going from store to store to compare prices.

Even today, things have come full circle. I can now order my groceries on line and have them delivered to my front door in about 3 hours (including dairy). I don’t have to fight finding a parking spot at Krogers and I don’t have to go down aisle after aisle to try to find what I’m looking for.

I’ve never subscribed to the “good old days” pablum. The only constant is change. If you don’t change, you’re left behind. I don’t like being left behind.

    Decisions, Decisions...
I had a bit of a financial windfall- totally unexpected. My bride says the money is all mine and to spend it any way I want.
So, one option is to install the M Performance differential and a mild tune on the 2 Series(and have quite a biy left over
    or
Start looking for a replacement for the 2er.
I'm leaning towards the first option; there's almost nothing under $40k-new or used-that I think I'd like better. In the $45k range there is the Mustang Bullitt and a used M2 or M4, but that's about it.
Fortunately I have the luxury of being able to take my time deciding.

Bullitt...if you’re asking for opinions from the peanut gallery. I’m a sucker for Mustangs, though.

I don't see why you have to choose between the good old days and today. I don't think its really zero sum. Hold on to the past where it works best and change to the current when it makes sense.

Do you think we will ever see quirky or low profit autos like the Honda Element or a really small GM/Ford pickup or Toyota Tercel 4WD wagon again from mainstream companies? It seems that auto makers aren’t going to mfg anything that won’t sell in large numbers. Not to mention only limited exterior/interior colors. What’s out there now is not enough to get me in the showroom to spend my hard-earned cash.

I think you’re spot on. It’s been years since industry leaders Honda and Toyota abandoned cars like the MR2 or S2000. Now most brands are eliminating whole segments in favor of the most profitable lines.
Kia and Hyundai are your best bets.

    @snakeweasel What, no AMC?

Fair enough Snake. I grew up in the Chicago area too where Kenosha Kaddilac's were a fairly common sight. In the latter 60's AMC did put out some competitive, quick vehicles despite their conservative, economical image in the prior late 50's and early 60's. In fact, at Mopar shows you can sometimes find a few Javelin's or AMX. Of course, during my school years there a Rambler wagon was the common sight ;)

I do wonder though, the other day I read Tesla is having trouble making and selling cars. I saw Ford is having a big problem in China which is a huge player for cars - sales down 37% this year. Ford can't afford to keep up with latest technology and the Chinese love electronics. Today I read that Nissan is really hurting especially in the US where they sell way too many cars to rental companies, and the dollar value of the cars they sell is lower than average in the U.S.(about $30k instead of $35k).

I don't see why you would buy a Nissan when there are many better choices I would think. in every category they offer. Probably more will struggle as car sales seem to be off these days.

Nissan has been plagued with failures in their CV transmissions to the point where everybody is wary of them. I like Nissan cars, especially the Altima but after being stranded by one I’d only lease. Nissan comes with a lot of safety stuff that I don’t see on Fords.

Should be getting my check for the company stock I purchased 4 1/2 years ago, due to our company being sold.
Each share was 1K when I bought, not eligible to buy a lot of it, but now valued at 3.7K per.
Hopefully, I filled out the tax form correctly back then and will get charged for capital gains vs regular income.

There was a letter a few days ago in the local paper that said, "If you are entering a highway in the merge lane, the driver in the merge lane has the right of way! Drivers on the highway have to let that car in.
The next day there was a slew of letters saying that is wrong, the car on the highway has the right of way - and some said courteous drivers help cars to merge.
I looked up the laws in different jurisdictions and the second opinion is correct. This one from Michigan says it best.
While readers may continue to argue over appropriate etiquette at highway on ramps, Michigan law leaves little room for debate: Merging motorists "shall" yield the right-of-way to existing traffic and adjust their speed accordingly. Failure to do so can constitute a civil infraction.

There's nothing in the law that prevents highway motorists from safely switching lanes or moderately adjusting speeds to make room for merging traffic, but such behavior should be considered a courtesy rather an obligation

    From Florida Driver Handbook:

    1. Who has the right-of-way in Florida? The answer is no one! The law only says who must yield (give up) the right-of-way. Every driver, motorcyclist, moped rider, bicyclist and pedestrian must do everything possible to avoid a crash.
    2. Merge into traffic when you can do so safely. You must yield the right-of-way to traffic on the expressway. You cannot always count on other drivers moving over to give you room to enter, but do not stop on an acceleration lane unless traffic is too heavy and there is no space for you to enter safely.

These two rules basically mean that if some knuckle head rams into you, or cuts you off and you ram into them and you had a chance to avoid it by slowing down and letting him in, you'll be declared a contributor. It's not enough to be on a lane that is marked to be yielded to, one has to avoid crashing into somebody. This of course makes large percentage of crashes with shared liability and nice field for lawyers and insurance companies to argue percentages.
I find with the amount of truth that comes out of human mouths after a crash, that absent video, the "rules" don't mean much. Very few people testify honestly enough for the rules to even matter.

    I read this part:
"2. Merge into traffic when you can do so safely. You must yield the right-of-way to traffic on the expressway." as seeing it the way the other jurisdictions do, but they seem to allow for more politeness by saying "Every driver, motorcyclist, moped rider, bicyclist and pedestrian must do everything possible to avoid a crash".
I would think, unless it was a very unusual situation, if there was an accident, the one already on the highway would win!

Not if slowing by 10 mph couple of seconds before (when seeing a guy attempting to merge) could have avoided the crash. Then he doesn't "win", he shares the responsibility. Not necessarily 50-50, but they will assign some, it's not going to be 100% "intruder's fault". It will go like this - the intruded started it, but the guy on the highway did not make reasonable efforts (slowing down) he was supposed to to avoid the collision.

Bottom line, just because you're on the traveling lane, it doesn't make you master of the highway. Just because other people are told to yield to you, doesn't mean you can carelessly ram into them at will for their disobedience.
It's great in theory but doesn't work in the real world. Insurance companies need hard and fast rules to assign blame quickly. The person that rammed you on purpose could make up all sorts of excuses why they couldn't avoid you (no other choice). Slowing down would have got me rear ended, and so forth.

    A very slippery slope indeed.

Even the cheap Nissans have a bunch of features like blind spot, collision avoidance and other things that Ford has as upscale options. My Ford my be getting a little long in the tooth but back in 2015 you had to go for the Premium trim to even buy those things. I haven’t driven a new Fusion in a while but I’ll take note next time I’m in one.

I certainly would rather have a Ford without safety nannies than a Nissan with them but with a bad transmission.

I had a very similar situation. My division of a large company was sold as a management buyout. Every employee that stayed with NewCo was given a $1k bonus. And, conveniently, the option to buy 10 shares of NewCo at $100/share (Canadian $). I did so, filed it and forgot it.
Fast forward a couple of years, Newco goes public, huge stock split for current owners, bringing the cost/share down to ~0.26. Fast forward many years, after I had left, and the company was purchased for $13.95/share. And a Jaguar XK magically appeared in my garage a month later!

Today was my 63rd birthday, which seems incredibly old to me and my self-image. It was a nice day, I did a few things outside earlier, had dinner out, and am now finishing off the evening with a Lagavulin.

I haven’t shared this here but ever since March I’ve been struggling with more heart issues. It took a while to figure out what it was because the system here is so backed up but now they know it is atrial fibrillation so I’m waiting to see a cardiologist who can recommend a course of treatment. Might be weeks, hopefully not months. It’s frustrating because I can’t do much of anything physical and often don’t feel well, but other days are OK like today. Now you know why I am critical of Canadian health care.

On a brighter note, this evening the Cunard Lines cruise ships Queen Elizabeth and Queen Mary 2 visited the city today and there was a bit of a ceremony to mark the long history of Cunard in Halifax. The two ships did a parade lap of the harbour on their way out which drew a large crowd of onlookers. Here are a few shots via flitelabimaging.com .

It was his first brand new car in his lifetime - he is 48 years old. He’s worked hard these past few years and is now the General Manager of a World”s Gym in the Desert Cities of CA.

Sorry about the afib problem. I hope you’re on some sort of blood thinner as I’m sure you know your risk of stroke is much higher. My dad had that and that’s what indirectly took him.

    Those ships are beautiful.

Regardless of my above post, today must have been National Remind Laurasdada of all the Poor Career and Financial Decisions Made Most of his Life Day; running errands in and about my 'hood earlier, I shared the road with an Aston Martin DB11, two Ferrari California and a 458 Italia. While not as $$$-y, a just as stunning Jag F-Type convertible.

Yeah, life is good. And, I have no deck at all.

Don’t feel envy for those other drivers, those cars are probably leased and they have no furniture in their homes.

    @oldfarmer50,
What features are you referring to?
On a Fusion you can get stop and go cruise.

My son just bought a 2019 Nissan Altima. You are correct - it has blind spot monitors, accident avoidance, pedestrian alert, and lots of other stuff. It was his first brand new car in his lifetime - he is 48 years old. He’s worked hard these past few years and is now the General Manager of a World”s Gym in the Desert Cities of CA. I am proud of him.
Tell him to change the CVT fluid every 30k miles. He might also want to install a transmission oil cooler if he’s driving in hot conditions.

He obviously will be driving in some of the hottest climates in our country - Palm Desert, Palm Springs and La Quinta, CA.

Thanks, OF. I’ll pass that info on to him.

Mike, great news about your son.
I am so glad I am not in the work force anymore. Unless you are a professional and extremely good in your field, or you are a computer wiz, not many jobs in that sweet spot that pay a decent amount and that you can enjoy.

Going through life without a deck must be difficult.
No matter what car you have, there will be people who have better ones, so be satisfied with what you have. Your list of cars is not too shabby.....it could have turned out worse.....

OK what happened? As was typing a response the page went blank and was covered with a message that “Cloudflare” had timed out and I should try again later. What’s up with that?

You have been hacked ! Send me $20. (I'm not greedy) and all will be well.
    Well let’s see....

    :DB):p;)B):D I can post emotorcons.....

And I can post pictures. So I guess you unhacked me. I’ll gladly send you that $20, just give me your bank acct. #, your SS # and your PIN and I’ll send it right out. Also if you tell me your mother’s maiden name I’ll mail her a mother’s day card. ;)
Stop posting and mow your yard! Nice car though.
That’s a farm field. Although my lawn doesn’t look much better.
Figured it was, but couldn't resist. Now go and bale some hay.

Happy birthday and thanks for posting the pics. Especially the top one showing the small boats on the port side of the Queen Mary 2! Amazing.

The tire tracks in the grass look like @farmer slid the car into place at speed like they do in the TV commercials where they take a toyota camry and run it on mountain roads at speed and then do 2 360s and skid it right into place for a dramatic final view as they tell you to hurry to your local dealer for the purchase.
