We're a split household regarding personal tech. Girls have MacBooks, while I have a several year old Toshiba laptop. We all have iPhones, however.
For work, I've got a hand-me-down Lenovo ThinkPad. I've got a small problem with the audio, which is a problem for certain conference calls I participate in. When the girls had to buy a laptop for their new business, they chose a Dell, as the corporate office recommended a Windows system to work with their home grown back office software.
The instructors that report to me are split - one has a new MacBook pro, while the other two use Windows systems. Ironically, the Mac user has had more issues with connectivity to AWS and display than either of the Windows machines.
“ as we were leaving they told us another couple came in very interested in the car“
Yeah, and used Chrysler’s are going UP in value so you better sign right away.
I wish sales people wouldn’t do stuff like that. Even if they’re telling the truth it sounds like a ploy. Just once I’d like to call their bluff and say “oh, someone else really wants the car? Why don’t you give it to them and we’ll find another one across town.”
Well they told us that after we did all the paperwork and put down the deposit. During the time in the office I didn't want someone to buy it out from under us so I brought up putting down a deposit to hold it. So they telling us that in no way could have had any influence.
As for the Sebring they quoted us more than I was looking for, but I know that it's fully depreciated and there's no real value left in it. Since there is no real value left in it and we are only covering it with liability insurance we are planning on keeping it as that would cost us little and keeps the car for bad weather and other things that would put undue wear and tear on the other cars. When it finally dies just have the junkyard come and get it.
I’m sure your wife will have a great time driving it. Those are nice cars.
When your Sebring starts acting up you can call this guy:
Maybe then he’ll stop following me around.
2019 Kia Soul+, 2015 Mustang GT, 2013 Ford F-150, 2000 Chrysler Sebring convertible
Good luck snake, hopefully the financing and insurance will go fine. It sounds like it would make an excellent car for you Mrs S. I assume your wife won't be putting lots of miles on it so it should give you many years of pleasurable driving. If you have a deposit on it why would the other couple put a deposit on it? In case you are not approved - then they have to try and get their money back. Like OF said, even if it was true, and I doubt if it is, why mention it?
I do think my wife will really enjoy the car. It's 10 miles one way to her work so commuting it's 5k miles a year. I think it's about 15 to 20k miles a year between both cars.
The other couple was before us and didn't put down the deposit which allowed us to do this.

@Michaell ....my company makes components for both Apple and Windows machines. We turn over 100s, maybe 1000 laptops/desktops every year. We get annual quotes from Lenovo, HP, Dell and Apple every year. We never pick Apple products since they say their equipment is not price competitive.
My point is, Apple products last 30%, maybe even 40% longer than windows machines. Moreover, they cost less to support.
We’re in the middle of a Windows 10 upgrade. It’s a nightmare...even for something as simple as getting printer drivers.
Frustration level with Apple products is much lower than Windows products.
my company is still running on windows 7 professional. Seems that support for that ends in January, so they are now forced to upgrade to 10. I expect it to be, painful. Especially because way too much of our stuff is home grown, old cobbled together stuff. I at least got lucky that I got a new laptop last year, so it is new enough to support 10,, but a bunch of people will need new laptops first, another relative nightmare quite often.
I actually split platforms. iPhone and iPad, but a windows (HP) laptop for personal use (on it now), and a Lenovo for work. Plus an old Dell desktop that at this point is a large external hard drive for the wife's pictures.
well, I just read the thread on removing the console. Nope, I am not doing that! And seems risky to have the dealer do it, not to mention pricey. I lived this long without the plug, I can go a little longer.
I read through all the threads on USB stuff. Nothing that was quite the problem I had, at least not that got resolved (a few people had similar issues where the connection crapped out)
Well, I knew the Dolphins would lose today in Dallas - that was a given - but I was surprised for the first 30 minutes! They looked like a Pro Football team - at least for awhile. In the end they managed missed field goal and 5 dropped passes and 2 fumbles - one fumble on the Dallas 3 yard line just as they were about to score.
The switch to Josh Rosen was a good move, however when you throw the football to receivers just like he was handing the ball to them and they drop the ball or fumble it, it has to take its toll on the quarterback and the team as a whole.
When you've traded away your top 10 players in July and August, why would you expect them to win football games. Rosen was sacked 4 or 5 times in the 2nd half and was running out of the pocket to avoid more sacks.

Oh, well - it's going to be a long season.
Guess we'll be in competition to see who gets their first win - Dolphins or Broncos.
Denver is supposed to have a hot shot head coach that is a wizard with defensive scheming, and arguably two of the best pass rushers in the NFL. After 3 games, zero turnovers and zero sacks.

Many years ago I thought someone who needed a Jerrold remote control device was lazy, who couldn't get up and change channels once an hour? I thought the same about power windows....who is too lazy to crank a window a few times?
I noticed that too. It looks like he's putting his farm subsidies to good use. In the past he has denied receiving any government handouts but the pics prove otherwise. He may still deny it and say it's the result of his lucrative Enterprise position but I doubt any of us in here is going to fall for that line.

I have 2 Windows 10 laptops here, one that is in my office, and one that is in the TV/living room. Both were upgraded from Windows 7 and I don't think Win10 is actually an upgrade. It seems just more dumbed down and mysterious than Windows was before. I also have an iPad and an iPhone, both of them my second that I bought last year to replace originals I got at work in 2013 before I retired and which I was allowed to take with me. The old iPhone 5 I got back then replaced a Blackberry Storm (remember that?) which was their attempt to make a full touchscreen device and was pretty awful. Thankfully the hardware crapped out after a year or so and by then we had moved to iPhones.
To me the difference was night and day and I quickly became a fan of Apple products. I am likely to buy an Apple laptop when it is time to replace one or both of these. I cannot stand Windows in any of its incarnations. It is just so difficult and kludgey to try to do almost anything. Nothing seems intuitive to me and you can still see remnants of MS-DOS under the skin sometimes. Yesterday was a perfect example. When I got up and poured my first cup of coffee I went to check emails on my living room laptop. Sometime overnight it must have had an update applied because I needed to log in again. Then, it just sat there, whirring away, and nothing would load.No idea what it was doing. I finished my coffee, got up for a refill, came back, and it was still sitting there. Finally I got fed up and did a restart, and after another 5 minutes of so, I was able to use it. Simply ridiculous.
the main reason I got the last windows laptop (after the dog stepped on the old one and broke the screen) was because it was vastly cheaper. Not sure what I would do if this one goes, but likely a Chromebook.
Wide right has a special place in Giants history. Must have been the mystique.
and I don't understand how the Giants D has been this bad, for this long.
Especially considering that the original Wide Right happened in the building that used to stand next door. Though Sunday was a chip shot, as opposed to an actual test of a kicker not known for his range.
I watched a good part of that Giants game yesterday including the end. Not particularly a Giants fan but was glad to see Jones play so well and for them to come away with a win despite an absolutely atrocious defensive effort. Lots of work to do on that side of the ball. I hope Jones' quality of play shuts up the absolutely horribly negative NYC sports media who have been beating the drum for months about what an awful choice he was. But the game also made me wonder why anyone would want to be a kicker in the NFL.
Was not particularly impressed with the Browns last night. For all the preseason hype they did not look at all good when they had the ball, although I grant that they were going against a very good defense. Still a long ways to go there for them I think. Overall, any weekend where the Pats win and the Steelers, Seahawks and Eagles all lose is a good one in my books.
you can still see remnants of MS-DOS under the skin sometimes.
MS-DOS? Must have been before my time? LOL I don't see MS-DOS remnants from my own experience, other than I call up a CMD window and use it to navigate to the folder where I put the lock screen pictures that I captured to give them all "jpg" extensions so I can use them as background graphics for the computers. I have the background cycle randomly through a folder of a few hundred beautiful images from Microsoft every 1 minute. I put them on the screens of a few friends' computers where I do the checkups to be sure things are working right for them. And things work a whole lot better with Windows 10, because MS got away from everyone having different versions of different stages of Windows. Keeping the version compatible with all the various drivers, mostly for printers, that people have scrounged up for their XP, Win7 (home and pro), Win 8, Win 8.1, was causing major problems.

I don't know how old your laptop is or how fast the system operates. This description sounds like Win 10 uploaded the update(s) in the background as it should. Win 10 does not apply them during the default working hours (8-5, e.g.). You may have changed the default hours for that in the Update and Security windows.
Mine will pop up a small window that an update is ready for install. I believe it gives an hour's warning. Then it is installed. I do not know if it installs if the computer is fully turned off, but in sleep and hibernate update may be installed.
After the install on the first start up the Win 10 scans everything from what I see. If your system has the power to do the scan and operate your normal input, that's not much noticed. But if your system loads down, you have to wait several minutes for the computer to reindex everything or whatever it does during that scan.
Usually updates are propagated on Tuesday after midday (Washington time) from Microsoft. So I manually go to to Updates and Security and have my computer do an update check to see if I need updates installed. I then let the computers do that over what might take hours in the background.. There will be a Restart button or small window saying it's ready.
All 3 of my laptops started as Win 8 machines and upgraded nicely. Win 10 is much better. Some older machines don't have compatibility to operate Win 10 when the software checks before doing an update. That was my XP Pro laptop. Didn't have the right kinds of chips.
Occasionally I get what you call a CMD window on bootup. It sure looks like MS-DOS to me.
I beg to differ on how stuff works better with Win10. Some stuff doesn't work at all. Another example: I have a Canon Canoscan flatbed scanner that uses a piece of Canon software called MX-Navigator to control it. It has always been a bit clunky to get it to start. Sometimes it comes up fine, but at other times it simply would not and a reboot was needed to resolve that. That's bad enough, but last week not even that would let it start. I dove into Google and what do I discover but a video illustrating my exact problem and an arcane but effective fix that required going into the Windows subfolders, making hidden files visible, and finally finding and deleting an empty and unused subfolder that was there. Having it sitting there prevented the SW from loading. Is that Canon's fault? Perhaps. But why is that thing even there?
After going into the machine that was slow to restart yesterday I saw that the latest update that happened overnight had changed my power options. Why? Anyway, I changed them back. This morning it once again had hibernated overnight. I looked and yesterdays change that I made either didn't stick or was again changed back. This kind of idiocy just doesn't happen to me with my Apple devices. Nor should it. I guess I should be grateful that this update didn't break home networking here as they usually do. Try fixing that when it happens. It is like beating your head against a wall. My favorite recently was when MS dropped the way I had been networking in the house here without any notice or explanation during an update. The gyrations that such users had to go through to first find out what had happened and then how to fix it was beyond ridiculous.

Have you tried uninstalling the Canoscan software and having the Windows built in software software do the scanning?
I'm not surprised there's a conflict between what Canon does in their installs and their operation and Win 10. I ended up buying a free cheap Canon all-in-one from a well known store just as a second printer after my laser printer. The software on both the laser printer and the Canon were obtuse to install. I wanted the features the Canon offered in the suite of 15 or so choices for scanning, printing, and maintenance (loosely named).
But I inherited my one laptop from friends who had a printer problem because she used it at home in Kentucky and in South Carolina in a rental getaway home they had there. Two different HP printers. The whole system would not work right with a printer for me. I think on that one I found a program from HP that combed the hard drive for all the pieces of earlier HP installs (probably including empty folders) and deleted them.
I have had to use similar scavenger programs for removing antivirus progs like McAfee, and some others I don't recall. The internet and videos have been a lifesaver for me as well.
Sometimes the Microsoft community page came up with people posting how to fix something.
My most obtuse problem was the Win10 update a couple years back--earlier updates worked fine. Lots of trouble-shooting steps, but I found it was a piece of HP software for the fingerprint scan that unlocked the laptop that was interfering. Problem was, that laptop did NOT have the fingerprint scan reader on it. Another of my laptops did... Who knows. LOL

I'm in the same boat. As I told our IT dept, my laptop is acting up and it has nothing to do with OS or software. These laptops have become so inexpensively made, that they don't last much longer than 24 mos (if that).
I'm right in between right now. Complete the update to Windows 10? Or, turn in my laptop for a new one 3 months early, and postpone the inevitable issues again 18 months from now.
Office 365 runs better on my 3 year old MacBook Air than it does on my 1 ¾ year old Windows machine.
I've been lucky that my company issued laptop (a Dell Latitude) has been largely problem free for the last 2.5 years running O365 and Windows 10. I'm due for replacement in the next 6-8 months but am not rushing it since I have not had any problems.
My personal Surface Pro 4 has been a different story - has not played nicely at all with Windows 10.

Regarding the Eagles, we've had many jokes regarding slippery hands the past 24 hours. I'm mostly just miffed that I chose to watch it during Sam's nap instead of taking a nap myself.

Same as I have for work. Solid state drive, Win 10, O365. Works great, no issues. I'm not particularly easy on it either as I drag it around everywhere.
My company refreshes laptops every 3 years, mine came due in May and came with Windows 10 so my upgrade was a non-issue other than needing a newer version of Insperity Org Plus. However many co-workers who were forced to upgrade on their existing machines have encountered a number of issues so it looks like I dodged a bullet there.

Who knows. LOL

My personal Surface Pro 4 has been a different story - has not played nicely at all with Windows 10.
