I was reading an article last night that talked about how in situations that are inherently out of our control - like a pandemic - people look for opportunities to take back control. Shopping (retail therapy) is one of those ways and buying things in volume that feel like a good value, helps us feel smart about how we're responding to the situation, even if objectively the action makes zero sense. Of course, then others see one person doing that and everyone starts to do it because they assume it is the right thing to do.

    Psychology is fascinating.

Hmmmm.... is that what is at play in the CCBA forum? Maybe we can pick up the pace of car buying in response to COVID-19!

I notice I am down to about 8 rolls in my personal stash, but I am going to try to avoid Costco for anything but gas. I notice Amazon is out of stock, too. Does COVID give people the runs or something? B)

Yeah - that looks like the appropriate amount of space between people in line. Costco is going to turn into a cluster of COVID cases at this rate...

Amazon being out of stock of TP should be a breach of contract, right? Afterall, what good is being a PRIME member with "free" 2 day delivery if they are out of stock?

I checked today. Put my phone in airplane mode and WAZE still followed along and knew where I was.

Thanks for your suggestions but I saw Jack Ryan on Prime and Drive To Survive on Netflix. Any other suggestions?

To my great surprise, I started watching the old Peter Gunn series on Prime recently and was taken by how good it was. Also, the old Naked City series, while somewhat dated, was also enjoyable.

Interesting. And it fits. People here now are swarming the big stores and have stripped the shelves of TP and water and other drinkables.

I would expect in a few days here with all the panic over the cold virus from the media the car dealers will be hungry to see someone actually shopping. I'd be afraid to make a lowball offer if I weren't serious. Shop on.

After today, it hasn't gone up much at all since Trump took office.

    S&P January 20, 2017: 2264 pts at close
    S&P March 9,:2020: 2859 pts. at close.

It’s still 26 percent, more than 8 percent annualized, so let’s not use alternative facts, shall we? Numbers can and will change (likely going up today by several percent) in next few weeks, but again that’s just one measure, very imperfect and incomplete, especially in such short time frames. Trump’s issue with the market was he was taking all the credit for the rise, so he is now looking for somebody to blame when the numbers will no longer look so fantastic.
I think were down to 5% increase over 3 years on the Dow Jones (From Jan. 20th, Trump's inauguration day), making it about 1.7% annualized. I was sort of predicting when I posted that it wasn't going to be the last bad day for Wall Street.

But the market is cyclical. It'll bounce back eventually. I double checked my math:

Saw gas here for $1.99 today and suspect it'll go a bit lower. Naturally, my petrol consumption has gone down by 2/3 since I moved over to Enterprise! Filled up about 10 days ago and have only used a 1/4 of a tank...crazy really! But super happy as I no longer have that $60/month charge for tolls and wear & tear is also way down. Round trip went from 58 miles down to 6.6...a big change. And hardly any traffic now. Plus a 401K and eventual profit sharing make Enterprise so much better. So glad this gig came up and also hearing how happy OF has been there, made it an easy switch!
It's been a bit busy lately, worked 6 days last week and doing another 6 days this week. A bit more than I really want but, as long as it's just temporary, I'm fine with it. After a month or two, then I'll be looking to scale it back a bit.

We’re sending some new recruits your way. One of our new drivers just bought a house in your area and our boss is trying to set him up with the local office. If you ever work with a guy named Russ tell him the guys in Albany said hi.😁

It might be busier than you know. The boss just put up an invitation to work a third 10-12hr. day for the near term. Seem some of the more infirmed have been calling in to ask for time off so they don’t catch the virus.

So the frenzy has hit South Jersey. Stopped at BJs to get supplies for my son’s birthday party Saturday and it’s busier than Christmas time!

Lines are into the aisles. People are buying three or four GIANT cases of paper towels and TP. Wow.

We went to Sam's Club last evening. Everything seemed fairly normal. Then I saw one guy pushing his cart to the check-out with about 6 cases of toilet paper. :disappointed:
Probably intends to sell it on eBay to the panicked sheep.

I have 7 payments left on my lease @ $629 including tax. If I could get a 0% loan for 60-72 months with a purchase price on an E450 $3000 below invoice (including USAA incentive) it could be enticing.

How about a 2019 like this?

Also, why do they put the seat adjuster on the door?

I read that in Jerry Seinfeld's voice for some reason :)

Column shift started on some models around 15 years ago. I greatly prefer it to the floor shift, on cars that aren't sporty anyway - so why pretend? Opens up the console area and makes the car seem wider and more airy. Tesla uses it too (down to the exact MB part).

Seat adjuster location and style has been used starting just over 40 years ago, several have copied it. My guess is it is easier to use with the door closed.

Oldfarmer...it sounds like you were driving an MB. What did you think, was there a difference? Did you get the feel of the road.
Our cars back home have the stalk shifter, once you get used to it, it makes sense. It is easier to use, hardly move your hand, can do it from the steering wheel. The C250 has a floor shift automatic.....it is sportier and Fin said it perfectly, why fake sporty in a car that is more luxury than sporty. It is less crude as well, to shift gears with a gentle touch.

I really like the seat adjustment on the door. That way you can see exactly what you are doing. It is especially good when a passenger has to adjust the seat, I tell them to look at the schematic and adjust it exactly how they want....much easier than fiddling around under and beside the seat.

Saturday was finally confirmed as an additional work day this week. Starting at 7 am also so we can get out there and get things done. So, six days last week, and six days this week. We'll see about next week but doubt that pattern will continue for long. I don't get it. They ask for volunteers to work the overtime but then they start bitching when others who declined to work complain and [non-permissible content removed]. Now, that's crazy! Work if you want to but don't complain when others say yes and make a bigger check. You had the same opportunity but chose not to. It's stupid to complain about stuff like this and we all know how much I hate stupid!

I don't know if you get MeTv in Canada or not but I seem to watch a lot of that cable channel. I just can't take the major networks anymore. MeTv has Peter Gunn, Perry Mason, The Fugitive, Mission Impossible, Gunsmoke and so such more. If you have that cable channel you should try it.

10 rolls ain't nothing. I just took inventory of the house and this is what I found and NO, we didn't just buy this. The last TP purchase was bought when we went to Sam's about 2 weeks ago:

Basement: 1 unopened 45 mega size roll package from Sam's plus 1 sub pack of 9 roles from a previous 45 role package.

1st floor powder room: 3 mega rolls in the vanity plus 1 role on the in-use dispenser.

2 nd floor common bathroom: 4 mega rolls in the vanity plus 1 roll on the in-use dispenser.

Bathroom off the master bedroom: 4 mega rolls in the vanity plus 1 roll on the in-use dispenser.

Not really, although that is a little high even for us. Normally, I'd say our inventory is about 20 rolls less than it is now. I guess we just established a bad habit years ago but with things like they are now maybe it isn't such a bad habit afterall.

When I had my seat controls on the bottom sides oh my front seats, I had to fumble with then until I found the correct control. With controls on the door, I don't "fumble" anymore - maybe I should become a "pass receiver" or a "running back"!🤪😩😜

‘We’re hustlers’: Amid coronavirus fears, this couple has made more than $100,000 reselling Lysol wipes
Manny Ranga and Violeta Perez have spent the last few weeks hitting up every Vancouver region Costco to buy Lysol wipes and liquid cleaners. They then resell the products on Amazon to make a profit.

Ranga, 38, said one six-pack of wipes that goes for $20 at Costco can fetch four times that online. (A check of Amazon on Thursday showed that a six-pack was going for $89 under their seller name "Violeta & Sons Trading Ltd.")

After shelling out about $70,000 in bulk buys, Ranga said they've made more than $100,000 in sales.

Of course, at the bottom of March 2009 the market index was at same levels as 1997 (so you only got paid some dividend during that time), which basically meant lost decade, but you slide the same window forward/backward a few months and numbers look completely different. It is 20 year window that beats every asset class, regardless how you slide it, but now who do you give credit for 20-year market outperformance? And that's really my point - judging anybody, including current president (not my favorite by any means) by what stock market did or didn't do during their short reign is a fool's errant. Make about same sense as blaming him/her for a gas price spike, locust in Africa and communications disruptions due to a solar wind. People do that all the time, partisan pundits often invent their own metrics to support whatever they sell, it's their job. Thinking people should not buy it.

I know it isn't offered on my cable system and I don't recall seeing anything about it being available elsewhere in Canada. Our federal government protects us from cultural ruin by forbidding certain subversive US TV signals from reaching us. :open_mouth:

Anyone watch Better Call Saul? I’m afraid all I’ll do is compare it to Breaking Bad, but I’m curious about it.

Probably intends to sell it on eBay to the panicked sheep.

I saw several mentions of how long the current corona virus can last in the air and on surfaces today given in a manner making it sound more dangerous than typical. So I looked up how long a "cold" virus survives: same time in the air and same time on steel or plastic surfaces.

This is not a flu. It's a cold virus. Elderly folks with risk factors are susceptible to complications. When a regular cold virus spreads most people don't think about the tiny symptoms they have at first and they spread it to many people. I noticed I had a slight nose tingle and then sniffles after my colonoscopy procedure on Tuesday. I apparently caught something in the procedure area or maybe the waiting room.

I am amazed at how this is being used to run down the market, along with the oil argument. Short selling is profiting and need

Hmmmm. I wonder why regular folk can't find TP and sanitizer wipes on the store shelves to buy 1, 2, or 3 for their own use. Outrageous.

Amazon should outlaw the abuse of price gouging.

I know that someone was selling a part that is hard to get for a GM engine for $585 for a used one, on Ebay. A new one used to cost about $85 and now costs $140 when available.

I finally realized why this thing needs to be treated this way. It's two factors:
    1. About 10 percent of people require hospitalization, out of which many require respirators.
    2. Virus is much more contagious than flu or cold.

When you combined these two, wide spread would overwhelm best healthcare system turning hospitals into battleground medical facilities with doctors making decisions who gets the respirator and lives, who doesn't. Most people would live through it, of course, but the elderly population would be really vulnerable. I think it's worth to bite an economic bullet and go in a short recession to avoid this scenario.

Great show. First two-three seasons are NOT Breaking Bad related at all, except short flash forward scenes - the BB characters are slowly being introduced, as Jimmy becomes Saul Goodman. Mike Ehrmentrout's story is also shown, again not really BB related, just how he came about. You have nothing to be afraid of.

BTW, I loved Justified. The characters are complex, dialogs refined and location views are fantastic. Several shocking plot turns there that completely blindsided me, which I loved.

Yes. Yes. Yes. The motto now is “flatten the curve.” Otherwise we’re going to be forcing our doctors to choose who lives and who dies.

Lol, yeah the door is such a better placement.

My Grand Marquis had them there as well.

So did my '80 Park Ave but I'm almost positive the passenger seat had it on the side of the seat. However, nowhere to be found on the rear seats though. :o

I've been watching BCS with the wife. I only saw a few episodes of BB, but the wife watched them all, so she fills me in on what happens to some of these characters.

So the impact of Covid-19 is real and seriously affecting companies.

My wife's place was told mandatory WFH today as a test to how the operation flows with the office shut down.

I just got off the phone with the company that wants to make an offer to me. Their offices are being shut down and they can't extend any offers until what decisions come next.

So I lose another week minimum, won't hear anything until next Thursday when their next update is.

    Brutal!

Oh, and was just at Dollar General for some wrapping paper for my son's gifts. They had plenty of TP, no hand sanitzer.

So the 1.5 trillion dollar Wall Street bailout by the "Fed" and the Farm bailouts in the tens of billions continue.

I'd like to see a bailout where I end up with a free Corvette.
